It's easy to see from the many different fur-babies on the Second Chance website--different sizes, ages, colors, breeds and needs--that these dedicated folks are committed to their mission of saving and re-homing homeless dogs. My overall experience with Second Chance was excellent. Staff responded quickly to my application for a particular pup, and I very much appreciated their responsiveness and encouragement when I was too late applying for a few different doggies. When I expressed interest in a couple of dogs that were still awaiting a loving home, Second Chance quickly put me in touch with the foster moms so I could learn more about those particular dogs. The foster moms were amazing. They were very patient with me and generous with their time in answering all my questions. By working with Second Chance, I found exactly the right fur-baby for me. The most amazing group of volunteers. 100% volunteers. I've adopted from Second Chance Dog Rescue 4 times since 2013. I will continue to adopt from this organization that rescues dogs around SoCal shelters and TJ. My favorite adoption was Roscoe, a 10 yo diabetic min pin chi. I was happy to take on his medical needs and give him the best last days of his life. Never asked the rescue for a dime because they had already done their best for him. These volunteers put their own money and time while working with donations and the adoption fees. It's all 100 % done in the name of dogs. They are truly doing God's work. Adopted our dog here in 2020. The process was easy. We went to the foster parents house and got to meet the dog before deciding.

Second Chance is such a wonderful and caring rescue full of compassionate people who love dogs and want the best for them! I have both adopted and fostered through them and have only had amazing experiences. When adopting, our dog's foster mom was even kind enough to keep our future pup on-hold since we fell in love with her but were headed on vacation and didn't want to stress her out by putting her in a new home with a pet sitter right away. So we signed paperwork before traveling and then our pup was waiting for us when we got back. Her foster made the transition so easy by providing a week's worth of food, a toy, collar, potty pads, and instructions on her routine! The training deposit was so easy as well - our 6wk course ran a bit late past the deadline due to the trainer postponing a few classes but that was no problem with Second Chance and we got our deposit back quickly. I recommend training classes with San Diego Humane Society, great courses, affordable, and easy - some are even virtual, if you adopt a puppy and don't know where to go to get your certificate! As a foster volunteer, the team has been highly communicative and supportive. They will let you be as involved as you want to be in the process which is a comfort when you get attached, which is inevitable. We are so grateful to Sarah, Linda, Jen, Vicky, Esther, Becky, and everyone else at Second Chance! Highly recommend adopting and/or fostering with them! read more

Fostered and then adopted a 10 year old husky from Second chance and could not be more impressed with this group of loving individuals. Worked with 2nd Chance when I was searching for my current dog. They were responsive and helpful. Really liked going to their events and connecting with foster families about potential dogs to adopt. I did not find my forever pooch with them, but it was not their fault in any way! If the right dog had been there, I would have moved forward happily. read more

I surrendered 3 puppies to this place paid for all their shots 3 sets of them Through west coast vet! I gave second chance 3 months of food because my girlfriend and I are nurses and time wise we couldn't take care of all 3 of them together and wags wouldn't take care of 3 puppies they would only do 1 due to covid. I spoke with Norma about my situation and wanting assistance in fostering. My girlfriend and I didn't want to separate siblings until they were older. Norma and Sarah were initially kind and shared that I could come back and take them if I changed my mind. Less than a week later we figured out a way to have assistance in raising them in our home. When I called Sarah and told her that my girlfriend has been crying the past week and figured out a way for assistance. Her response was I can fill out an application but she doubts I would be approved due to us being nurses!!! She used my own words against me. Now that covid is slowing down San Diego is opening back up and this company is treating 2 front line ER nurses like this! Also when you go on their page the "application fee"'and adoption fee is for their vet and "medical" expenses that my girlfriend and I paid for already! I am so hurt and just disgusted at the way this place handles business and switches their words around. Untrustworthy is an understatement. If you are looking to adopt these 3, their names are Rosie, Lucia, and Giada. This place makes a profit since their medical expenses were paid for prior. THEY ARE LIARS!!!! Wow. Today I was viciously attacked , insulted, humiliated, and brought to tears during my time of crisis by the owners of this rescue. I did not have to surrender my dogs to them, I had neighbors who wanted to adopt the dogs . But I trusted this rescue because I thought it was the right thing to do for my pets that they would be cared for the best . A few days after surrendering , I wanted to ask a question regarding the adoption process. To which they responded to me with lies, insults, and humiliation in my time of crisis. It broke me down in tears. I am so shocked at how unprofessional and abusive the owners were to me today. I feel I should warn others of how this rescue treats people during their time of crisis. They even told me not to support their Organization anymore . So I suggest you support another rescue that doesn't steal people's dogs and then Viciously insult the previous owners. My dogs were very loved very healthy and cared for. I even had the local church involved to pay for muffins surgery he needed. In the end they got what they wanted they were able to manipulate me to surrender my dogs to them and then they were able to insult me enough after they got the dogs so that they don't have to talk to me anymore when I was promised that I would get communication with the new owners. So it's all a lie . Please don't trust this Organization. If they have no problem abusing humans I don't see why they would have a problem abusing dogs. I am now scared what they're going to do with my dogs because clearly these people don't have a heart I don't know what's wrong with them why they're involved with dogs when they're clearly selfish, egotistical, bad attitude, nasty, rude people. I am getting my lawyer involved to document this. If anyone knows this lady's name and address I'd like to serve her with papers from my lawyer documenting her unprofessionalism and abusive behavior. I feel like if they have no problem abusing a human being what would stop them from abusing a dog why do they have a dog rescue it doesn't make sense. Certainly there must be more compassionate people out there running rescues with more empathetic people who actually care about people . read more

This is an awesome organization. They have wonderful foster "parents". They really care about the animals they want to give a forever home. And, if you don't live in the San Diego area, they have fosters with pets to adopt in Orange County. Check them out...you will be glad you did! I didn't end up adopting from them (only because I found a pup I wanted from another rescue) but wanted to say that Alix was wonderful in communication with me in trying to find a pup that would be a good fit. I called and emailed this rescue numerous times to discuss a dog that was given up by their owner. I left multiple messages. They never responded! Ever! Not even a voicemail. I donate to several local organizations. This is not one I would recommend or donate too. read more

Second Chance deserves a Presidential Medal way more than Rush Limbaugh! What the heck?! I can't believe the wonderful generous service they provide here for dogs and humans alike. I received the email on Foster Friday and couldn't say no to this cutie- Baker- he's available for adoption -PM me if interested. About him: a total love bug, lap dog! He loves snuggling on the sofa or a park bench,tummy rubs, going for walks, and playing tug of war. If I didn't already have a puppy, I would keep him for sure! He's actually a better personality than our own pup, ha! He's not too clingy, and just the right mix of calm and playful. He gets excited for visitors and meeting other dogs but is super mellow on walks, he doesn't pull and stays right with you. He is almost potty trained and has never had an accident on the furniture. He is crate trained but would much rather sleep with you. He's very food motivated and will be easily trainable. He gets along with cats (mostly ignores them) and other dogs very well. read more

We believe Wendy, owner of Second Hand dog rescue, in Rochester NY, is truly an angel on earth! She has more compassion in her pinky finger for dogs, than the rest of humanity has in their whole bodies! In July we adopted Sampson, an eleven year old Lhasa Also mix. We were so impressed with Maria's ( his foster Mom) care and love for little Sampson, she was well versed in all information about him, that we needed to learn. She picked him up and snuggled with him as she talked to us. This rescue is ALL ABOUT THE LOVE OF DOGS!!! With enormous gratitude for all they do......we thank Wendy and Maria for allowing us this little gem of a dog, to be our much loved little man!! read more

We are good people and can offer a good home. The adoption process was humiliating - the paperwork approved by committee yes, but we were were deemed unfit by the foster. We met the beautiful girl in our home and we fell in love with her immediately. She is 7 years old and she did so very well with all our pets and them with her. We had a company on tap to finish fencing the front yard. Granted we live in a mixed rural neighborhood, but there are lovely people here and the adoptee dog gave off a great vibe with all our pets and vice versa. But from the second we met the foster I told my husband I got the uneasy feeling she didn't like us from the first moment she laid eyes on us. And the excuses and the rules just started pouring from there the entire visit - but we listened politely and took note. Nothing that was a deal breaker - except the fence we had arranged for. She said she would call on Monday to arrange the sleepover. Well that was not accurate. Just so humiliating - we went to the puppy meet and greet/ fundraiser over that weekend and the woman absolutely snubbed us, even while pretending that she was considering a sleep over! Constantly fidgeting and pulling the beautiful girl away and turning her back to us. We didn't push it - not fair to the adoptee after all. The next day/Monday the email came - no call - rejection by email. I cried for a week straight, because she was such a beautiful and lovely soul and what a wonderful fit. Clearly not what this lady thinks. Excuses didn't fit with the experience. I get that this process is meant to be best for the dog - but when a good home is rejected out of hand I was just gutted. The dog still hasn't been adopted. We were so disheartened that we ended up at a breeder, as none of the shelter dogs had any history with cats after 3 months of searching in several counties. Safety is something we must consider for all. We will never attempt to use a service such as this again. Now we have a beautiful thriving mastiff puppy yes, and we love her with all our hearts - she fits like a glove - but my heart still hurts for this lost opportunity. My coworkers were incredulous - we have special needs pets that require medical care for the rest of their lives and we manage very well. We may live simply, but that doesn't mean we do not have means. I am happy for anyone who had success - this process is just not for us. I feel that good people and homes are ruled out based on personal likes/dislikes and I didn't appreciate the dishonesty or condescending attitude on the foster's part. read more

I love this organization, I adopted my sweet boy from Second Chance and the bio nailed him to a tee.

Note: This is the head office for Second Chance, not an animal shelter. I work nearby and since I had some puppy stuff (harnesses, pee pads, etc.) that my pup outgrew or could no longer use, I decided to stop by and see if any of their foster pup parents or new pup owners could get some use of of these things. The woman at the front desk was happy to take my bag of items and assured me that they'd be put to use, so that made me feel good. While visiting, there was a lovely 8 week old pup named Bullwinkle who was hanging out in one of the offices, no doubt waiting to be rescued by a new family. He was all the things a puppy should be - clean, happy (tail wags don't lie) and surrounded by toys and his own little bed in a crate. If you're looking to adopt a dog and haven't had much luck at your local animal shelter, check out their site where they list Available Dogs and have applications online too. After losing my best bud recently, I knew I was going to bring a new friend into my life. After a lot of research into rescue organizations, I kept coming back to Second Chance as a place to watch to see what pups might fit into my life. My research was further backed up based on the recommendation of my veterinarian (Bodhi Animal Hospital). I saw a pic of a cute pup, and read a great description that was more than "looking for her forever home" which was incredibly helpful. A lot of other organizations tend to post generic descriptions, and the fact that SCDR posts such good details made me feel confident that they know their dogs and want them to go to homes that are best suited for their personalities. So, I applied that Friday and went to meet her at their adoption event the next morning. Going into it, I wasn't positive I'd be going home with a puppy because the loss of my best bud, Bailey, was still quite fresh. But, to no ones surprise but my own, the minute I saw her it was over. She was the one. The staff was helpful and friendly and I got to meet her foster mom who was with her from birth and downloaded me with all the information I could possibly need. We've even kept in touch since and she sent me the pictures of her as a newborn puppy! On top of having all of her shots (two more were due after adoption, but SCDR covered the cost in their office), and being spayed, she was also crate trained and potty trained. That's like the puppy jack-pot!!! Now we've just got to get through the teething stage together (and hopefully with my fingers intact). I also love that $100 of the adoption fee is refundable upon certification of training. SCDR is a responsible organization who genuinely cares for the well-being of the dogs in their care. I would highly recommend any interested parties (for adoption or fostering) to seriously consider looking at this organization. I know if I ever decide my new pup needs a sibling, I'll definitely be going through them. read more

I recently fostered a dog for the first time for Second Chance, and want to give a huge shout out to the foster coordinator, Holli. I have never met a more helpful, dedicated, responsive and supportive person in this field. From the word go, Holli was always available to answer my (many!) questions and to promptly address any issues/concerns that arose. Her passion and her love for these animals is so evident and really beautiful to see. In addition, when it wasn't working out in my home for a certain dog, she didn't make me feel guilty; she kindly suggested I try another dog instead, which made the fostering experience an extremely positive one all around. I wrote a review for this organization back in 2016 that wasn't favorable. In 2019 I decided to give them another try, having been told they were under new management. What an excellent experience I had! I adopted a senior pup from them. They followed up after the adoption to make sure all was going well. They are very organized and were able to provide me with duplicate medical records when I couldn't find them after I moved. They clearly care about their dogs. I was Christmas shopping at the Grossmont mall in December. Unbeknownst to me the entire outdoor area was having a "Santa Paws" pet fair. Rescue dogs everywhere! So, of course I had to browse. I looked and played with dogs of all ages and sizes, not looking to adopt whatsoever!!! On my way out I came across a little black pup hiding in the corner. I asked to hold her, as she snuggled into my neck and fell asleep (welling up with tears now). I asked one of the assistants of St. Pacos if I could sit with her while she slept on a nearby bench...she kindly replied, "sit as long as you want with her, her 2 siblings where just adopted". She slept for a good half hour and when she woke up she gave me a little kiss on my nose and fell back to sleep. Needless to say an hour later I was filling out adoption papers. The St. Paco's team where so kind and helpful. What impressed me is that they mildly scrutinized me..lol, making sure I was serious and a good fit. They took adoption very seriously, making sure the dogs had loyal, responsible and forever homes. While I sat through the process I watched how their team got so excited when one of the doggies got adopted, as far as hugging the whole family. My Lilly is now 7 months and living the good life with her big sister Bella (my 11 year old Foxhound). While it is hard to be critical of a non-profit that provides a second chance for dogs, and a program that we supported by fostering a beautiful 6 year old poodle mix, Todo, for the past 7 months, the people there suck. Todo had been abused before we got him, and it took awhile to gain his trust. Eventually he became very comfortable and loving around us. We took him to several adoption events, but most of the times we had to pick him up as no one wanted to adopt him. Three times he was adopted and left our home only to be returned a few days later because he nipped a child (twice) or attacked the new owner's other dog. Second Chance told us that they would send a dog trainer to work with Todo but never did. We've been out of town a lot lately and haven't been able to take Todo to other adoption events (oh, well, didn't seem to matter much given the last 3 times adoption failed, so we thought). Today, one of the rudest people I've ever met appeared at our doorstep demanding Todo without so much as a thank you for opening our loving home to him for these many months. I half expected to see her bicycle and wicker basket parked outside to whisk him away. Bitch. Not sure we'll ever give second chance a second chance. But we love dogs (god spelled backwards), and will find other opportunities to serve. We love you, Todo! Be safe!! read more

Recently had a meet & greet with foster and dog from second chance. I thought the meet & greet went well and the foster parent seemed ecstatic about handing her over to us. My partner and I decided we'd like to keep the dog. The foster parent said we'd be a great fit and to set up a day to pick her up. My partner and I were beyond excited to build a life with this dog. Sadly, next day I get a text that the dog had be placed in a different home. I was under the impression she was ours and that there was only one other applicant who wasn't a " good fit " .... clearly I wasn't either. I recently lost a dog and this experience just made it all worse. read more

Inquired about a pup a few times, and was never contacted. Based on other reviews they don't seem very trustworthy, but they could still reach out. It sadness me that such helpless animals are under there care. This company has a disregard for others so much so that they have no issue speaking ill of the very people that are speaking to adopt. I called on behalf of my grandparents and The lady at first was polite and said she was going to send me an application but yet minutes later I get a call back, it seemed she called me by mistake because I over heard her and 2 other woman being very disrespectful. I was set up to meet Lili, a puppy on second chance. Beatriz has assured me she wanted her to be mine. We had spoken several times via email and text and I let her know the only time I could meet her was in the evening or on a weekend. She told me that Lili would probably be gone by the weekend and we agreed to meet the following evening at 7:00. Not thinking she was a flake, she emailed me at 6:15 to cancel. She said she couldn't make the evenings although we clearly discussed meeting in the evening. I didn't read my email, so I wasted my time and gas trying to meet Lili. I emailed her and told her she could of called or texted me. She ghosted me and didn't even appolgize! If she knew about how she didn't want to meet in the evenings, than why agree to it? Next, why did she tell me last minute? She had all day to tell me! Finally, she completely ghosted me. Bottom line, she is unprofessional and is a flake and a lier! Buyer beware! read more

I would like to express how deeply disappointed I am with this organization, not necessarily for how they choose to treat their dogs (since I have not witnessed it in person) but how they choose to interact with potential adopters My family and I recently lost our dog who was the absolute center of our world, as well as her brother who we also lost about a year and a half ago. Both passed away due to old age (12 and 13 years old). Anyone who knows my family and I can attest with absolute confidence that we go above and beyond for our pets and that we are huge animal lovers. I, myself am a vegan and cruelty free consumer. Well, being that we recently lost our dog we felt that we were in the right place to welcome 2 new dogs into our home, of course, we wanted to rescue and not shop. I have actively been applying to rescues, calling, and emailing for almost a month now. I understand that due to COVID-19 the application process has significantly slowed down but all other rescues have been diligent in sharing this information EXCEPT THEM My parents and I found 2 amazing dogs on PetFinder who seem to really need help and they happen to be from this organization. I reached out to them and in a very rude and unprofessional reply I got "Well if you would have read on PetFinder it says they're not at our shelter yet". Of course I was taken back by how unfriendly this staff member appeared to be but I went ahead and submitted an application. The following day I sent out a second email asking to update me on whether these two dogs had arrived at the rescue yet. I received no reply so I decided to call. I got no answer either but their voicemail said I could call or text another number so I did Again, I was welcomed with an extremely aggressive and unfriendly response. Basically, they denied my application because I "contacted them too many times". Not only does this seem extremely illogical but also, truly unfair to both my family, myself, and the dogs. There was absolutely no REAL OR VALID reason as to why these people felt that I was a bad match for these dogs other than the fact that they just decided that because I was "pushy" and perhaps annoying that they were going to deny my application. I doubt that they even took a real look at it As I said to the person I spoke to, I don't doubt that they have done great things for their dogs but their extremely close minded approach only serves to jeopardize these dogs instead of truly helping them. I apologize if my eagerness to adopt a dog was overwhelming but I feel that is not a reason to deny a dog from a loving home just because I failed to meet their expectations as to how I should act If they simply would have communicated with me that I was bothering them I would have stopped calling and emailing and I would have waited patiently to receive a response. Instead, they chose to shut me down. I would have liked the opportunity to adopt these dogs. I would have liked to be treated with respect and fairness, but apparently that is too much to ask for. I hate that the fate of these dogs and many others are in the hands of people who lack respect, tolerance, and an open mind to make an objective decision rather than an immature emotional one. I sincerely hope that these dogs all find amazing homes and that in the future, this organization learns how to treat people better As a side not, I will NEVER buy a dog instead of adopting one but I put myself in the shoes of someone who is adopting for the first time and is perhaps still hesitant about it, and this type of behavior does not encourage adoption. Buying a dog is as easy as going to a pet store and paying money for a dog. Never or rarely ever are shoppers required to fill out long adoption applications, so consider the fact that not only filling out an application is long but that after all that you are met with someone who is not only rude but also unprofessional? If you are someone who is not extremely passionate about adopting, you are likely to throw the towel and resort to shopping instead. All because someone didn't give you a good experience on what rescue is really all about. This person would probably be much more likely to continue shopping in the future instead of adopting now that they have a negative perception on adoption. The lack of kindness from the people at this organization would continue to deny dogs of good homes because someone who was willing to adopt was pushed towards shopping before they had the opportunity to welcome in a rescue who could change their heart and their perception on adopting I hope that this organization sees that their close minded approach is negatively impacting the future of many dogs who deserve better read more

We had a great experience with SCDR. We showed up at a large adoption event with many shelters and were truly overwhelmed by the crowds and the seemingly insatiable adoption process. We were sure we wouldn't find a dog that we could take home. We came across the SCDR booth and found Lemon (then named Harriet) and immediately started the paperwork to adopt her. She is incredibly smart and loving and we really think SCDR did a great job with their fostering, as she came to us crate trained and (mostly) house trained. We're thrilled with her and our experience with SCDR. read more

I have been to other rehousing centres and left feeling thoroughly depressed however this place was uplifting, a real home from home- the dogs have bright, airy kennels with sofas and throws and real love! Edna doesn't just deserve a medal she should be made a saint! My daughter and I can't heap enough praise on Second Chance- because that's what it really is! read more

Second Chance is awesome! I foster for them. All the volunteers are friendly, helpful and professional. I cannot say enough great things about this organization! They bend over backwards to help dogs get into good homes. If you read Ken P's review, take it with a grain of salt.
