Our son has been at the Boynton House which is managed by Kelly. We have been so thankful for Kelly. He's been a great role model for our son and while he has a tough exterior it's apparent that he truly cares about the residents. Our son had a relapse and Kelly was a huge source of support and knowledge through it all. Both me and a few of my housemates there for emotionally and psychologically abused while staying in second chance. The house manager was old and had a really bad temper and made no effort to talk things out or work out a solution. Instead he would yell at you, belittle you, and make you feel terrible about yourself. I'm saying this so other newly recovering attic's don't have to experience what I experienced. I moved into second chance from after completing an inpatient recovery program thinking this was for the best but man was I wrong. If you want structure this is not the place to go. The house I moved into was filled with drama and people on drugs, using drugs in the house constantly. The house manager was even on drugs. I didn't even want to come home because it was so tempting to join them. They never drug tested us, we never had to go to meetings. The woman who is higher up, Heather, is money hungry and tries to rip you off anyway possible. DO NOT MOVE INTO THESE HOUSES!!! Of all the SLE's I have seen I probably feel the safest visiting this one. Not only do they have in house meetings to connect but the owners like to get the house members to connect outside the house for entertainment. I've been a client at Second Chance for going on 9 months now and just wanted to acknowledge my appreciation towards the owner (Mark) and the management at both the 4th st. and La Jolla houses.When I came into recovery I was looking for structure and consistency, not a crash pad or revolving door.I am happy to say in my experience I've gotten much more then what I was looking for. While TLC did help in maintaining sober living, it was also a corporation and you could feel their need to make money. The house has all the amenities: cable t.v., interent, etc. and it is alot cheaper, with less people living in it than other houses in the area that I looked at. Lots of meetings in the area. I had a genuinely amazing experience living in one of these homes, it had such a cozy feel and it's a very community-oriented home. Few clients came and went, I made plenty of long time friends living here. For the amount of people we had there was always reasonable storage and accommodation, not to mention the house was next to Santana row and valley fair so amazing location too. House managers are some of the kindest and efficient people I've known. Great if you're looking for affordable housing temporarily and focus on work/school exclusively, structural rules helped keep me in order for sure. When my brother hit rock bottom and no one was able to help him, Mark helped him start his life over again and gave him a safe, supportive home where he could clean up and rebuild his self esteem. This house is a life saver! My son was struggeling and was not able to get sober at home, even though he went to inpatient rehab and an outpatient rehab. We checked out several other sober living homes, but this one was the best fit. Unlike other sober homes we saw, there is only a MAX of 9 people living there so its not overcrowed. The house parent staff is incredable and very nice and are ready to work with us so we could schedule a tour around our schedule.
