I had been to this program back some years ago. When my family member called Lori Johnson she gladly took her overpriced program fees . She had a drug addict coming off her drugs in the house when she should have been in a hospital or under a doctor's care. Did lori care- no. The house is 8 to a small room for 3 or 4 at most. When I decided to leave of house she kept my mother's money who is 98 now. Lori don't care about the person she cares about money first and after 30 days u are on ur own. The toilet had no toilet paper and her house is full of cockroaches like her counselors whom she cheats out of money. I would run from her so called recovery house. read more

Amicus house broke HIPPA laws while I was there. They fed me rotten food after roaches crawled on it. They tricked me into stating when my judge said I was free to go. They violated many of my human rights and they are not good people. Please don't let your family members suffer here. They would not call the ambulance when my friend was suffering. They cashed food stamps after my other friend left. They made me "find god" in order to move through the program. i was not safe there. Another resident was stealing knives then wandering around at night. I was afraid for my life but didn't report anything because I was court ordered to be there. read more

They have no detox facility, which should have been a showstopper for me. But the website looked inviting with all the quotes from the court system and law enforcement, so I thought -- maybe it's okay! And it may be okay if your loved one is not a severe addict or is not a "dual diagnosis" (has depression issues as well as substance abuse). Amicus House has one counselor for 12-20 people. That counselor is a reformed addict, and she does a bang-up job. But with no clinical or medical experts on staff the treatment is not as professional as I wished it would have been. My loved one stayed extremely depressed with four-hour long crying jags and after 60 days he still had no plan or hope for his future. I saw no progression in the treatment. If alcoholism is a disease, shouldn't it be treated by a medical professional and not by some lay person? After 60 days in residential and 2 months of the SLE (sober living environment -- housing), ,my loved one relapsed and ended up in jail. Plus Amicus placed him with a sponsor who was still an active drug abuser. While this is probably an anomaly, it is significant enough to mention. I understand the addict is responsible for his/her own actions, however I believe it is emblematic that severe addiction is out of the scope of this facility. Please look at the reviews on Google for further evidence -- the relapse rate for Amicus is pretty significant. One further item that grated me: In the admission interview, Lori Johnson the owner was most interested in discussing finances. She wanted to know how much money I could spend for how long. While in the program, the only time Amicus House contacted me was to ask for my credit card to renew his monthly fees. They never discussed his treatment plan or progression. It was all about the money and so cold hearted, I researched sending my loved one to another facility, but decided to give Amicus another chance since he was already committed. Bottom line, if you have a choice -- try other options unless your loved one is a minor alcoholic who can benefit from the light treatment they offer. read more

I have been considering writing a review since I found Amicus house for a family member and am motivated to do this now because I am extremely disheartened to see some of the reviews bashing this program. Almost five years ago, we discovered the level of need my loved one had re: addiction. It was a shock to the entire family and we were dealing with many fears of our own. With my loved one living in Oregon and me living in San Jose, I began to look for options here. After four inquiries, the only return contact within 24 hours was from Amicus House. While we played phone tag a bit, we connected and I was able to speak with an intake person and the owner. Over the next 24 hours, I received options for my loved one receiving services and the owner, Lori, even made herself available to speak with the law officers involved in my loved ones case. Once arriving, it was difficult to drop my loved one off and know that the journey to recovery would be challenging. The family nights were essential for us, as I learned a lot about addiction and other things that impacted how we got to this point as a family. When my parents came to visit, my Mom received great insight from the counselor. Sober living began after my loved one's stay at Amicus. It was hard and amazing to watch this change occur. Things were looking up; enough that I felt comfortable having my loved one move in with me. Here we are almost five years later. Clean, healthy, employed, and happy. Our family has never been as strong and we are so grateful for Amicus House and the ongoing support from Lori and the team. For those of you considering a program for your loved one (or for yourself) - please consider that this is a reality program - the expectation is the client needs to learn how to LIVE while not using. I was very pleased with my stay at Amicus house. The staff was knowledgeable and friendly. I felt comfortable and well cared for during my stay. The activities could have been a bit more exciting but for the cost my expectations were met. When I left I moved into one of the Sober Living homes which I would highly recommend. I attended Amicus house rehab for about 3 weeks. Don't waste your time with this place. It's nothing but AA meetings. Cooking is done by the patients, and so is cleaning. Exercise is 5 minutes in the courtyard stretching. There are NO doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists or even interventionists. There is nothing here to justify it's price tag, and when I decided I had had enough of this nonsense and decided to leave, I was given 8 dollars and I was turned loose in the streets of San Jose's ghetto (which is where the rehab is located). Just to let you know what kind of neighborhood this place is in, I was offered drugs for sale and threatened with robbery, within the space of a block from the rehab. After making my way out of the neighborhood, I spent the night on the rooftop of a closed business since they had only given me 8 dollars and I had no money for a hotel or a taxi back to Santa Cruz where I'm from. The next day I called my attorney, and he was nice enough to pick me up and drive me back to Santa Cruz. Lori Johnson and the counselors didn't give a damn what had happened to me, and never contacted me to find out how I was doing or if I was even still alive. Go anywhere but here for rehab, and remember, POS's like this will ALWAYS prey on you if you give them an opportunity to. Don't be like me and give them an opportunity. Good Luck! read more

Amicus taught me everything I know about sobriety. Amicus empowered me with concepts like: the only thing you need to change is everything and if you do not put your sobriety first, you will not stay sober. If it wasn't for Amicus house, I would not have learned all the things I do today that have gotten me to my 21 MONTHS OF SOBRIETY. I appreciated the structure of doing chores, cooking for my peers and having a wake up time. I was an anti-social drunk with no purpose, self-worth or drive. I set here today 5 years after my daughter completed the program at Amicus House compelled to write a review to thank Amicus House for saving my daughters life. I watched my daughter destroy her life and everything around her for ten years. She was strung out, had tons of court cases, had lost all three of her children, she was at the end of the road....in desperation she called me for help. I could tell that this time was different than all others. We lived in Sacramento, I called my life long friend (Lori Johnson) at Amicus House in San Jose. Lori set up a interview and accepted my daughter into the program. Once my daughter was there I knew it would be up to her to do the work to turn her life around. Because of Amicus House's skilled staff and a program designed specifically for the recovery of addicts, my daughter was able to succeed. Everything you read below is true about Amicus. The only thing they care about it is money. As long as you are paying your monthly dues, they don't care. The managers of the house pick and choose when they want to uphold rules and when they don't care. They are old junkies that are just on a power trip. They tell you that your participation in the program will remain confidential (from your employer, etc.) however, anytime you leave the house they require a form to filled out wherever you go. For example: If you have to go to the DMV to renew your drivers license, you have to have the DMV sign a form saying when you were there and the length of time. This makes it very tough to remain confidential. The managers of the house also gripe about EVERYTHING you do. They are constantly holding "house meetings" about the amount of toilet paper people are using! When you wash dishes they monitor the amount of soap being used! Everything is about saving a penny! Which doesn't make sense when you are paying so much a month to live there! NOBODY at Amicus cares about your recovery. In fact, they would prefer it if you stayed using so that you will stay in the house and pay them. People have been known to show dirty on a drug test while in the house and NOT get kicked out as long as the checks clear each month! I DO NOT recommend Amicus and I highly suggest looking elsewhere for the recovery of your loved ones or yourself. read more

Lori Johnson and Amicus house is a complete waste of your money. Lori Johnson does not care if your loved one recovers or not. She only cares if your check cashes or not. Lori and the counselors treat you like second class citizens and have no respect for your loved ones. There is NO individualized treatment and they teach the same thing day in and day out. The house is filthy, the food is processed and disgusting and they have 1 bathroom for 15+ men. Lori also doesn't provide soap or paper towels for the men's bathroom and at the SLE they ration toilet paper. Basically the living conditions are deplorable. For $3700 a month you should at least be guaranteed fresh (not processed) food, toilet paper, hand soap, paper towels, and another bathroom. Lori Johnson is a fraud and a disgrace to the recovery process and field. Lori has fooled the county of Santa Clara and DA's office for accreditation. I cannot express what Amicus House has done for our family. Our family member was there for 60 days and then transferred to their sober living environment for 3 months. Our lives have changed so much for the better. The counselors were so helpful for not only our resident family member but for everyone in our family. Probably the best program available for the money. I recently wrote a nasty review about Amicus House. I was angry. After thinking about it I realized the points made were correct but the overall message was wrong. Ive been to 5 rehabs and have struggled very hard to find a desire to stop using and drinking. Very few people get sober their first time in treatment the ones who do are blessed. Most people require multiple attempts to get sober. Having gone to this many rehabs has given a chance to see how different recovery homes and treatment centers run. All of them have things they do really well and things they don't do well. None of them are perfect. Some charge emormous amounts of money and have poor programs. In terms of residential treatment you do not get more for your money just a more luxurious environment. Amicus house is the most affordable residential program I know of. Amicus house offers a very serious and professional program for $3700 a month. The staff is professional and supportive and they do the best they can while charging a low rate. They know what they are doing and it makes me wonder what they could do for their clients if they charged $10,000 or more which is pretty much standard for rehab. They offer an exceptional program for the amount they charge. A person has to keep in mind that for them to be able to keep the cost of their program for low they have to trim the fat (if that is the right expression). To do this the house they use is a little small and they put in as many people as allowable by state law. So its not great for people who dont do well in cramped spaces. This closeness produces a family like atmosphere that I noticed missing at some of the programs I've been to. The food is homecooked. Its like living at home and having to eat what mom decides to cook. But lets get real. Recovery is about learning the tools necessary to get sober and finding the desire to get sober. Its not about eating luxury food. The quarters are tight. They have bunkbeds. Its no problem unless you are some person with entitlement issues and the bunk beds offer an opportunity to grow a close relationship with your bunk mate. Its kind of cool if you think about and can humble yourself. They have no medical component. This probably is what keeps the cost of the program so low. So if you or your loved one has a serious dependence on their drug of choice and a possible underlying mental health diagnosis it is probably wise to chose a treatment center that has a psychiatrist who can diagnose and prescribe medication for you or your loved one. If you need a detox you can do it at the hospital or detox center and then enter the Amicus house. The schedual at Amicus house is rigorous. They dont let you sit around like you are on vacation. Groups run from in the morning until five at night. No time is wasted and the clients are given just enough down time to not go absolutely crazy. I chose to go to Amicus house becuase they have a very impressive schedual with groups, one on one sesions, book studies, Assignment time, and Yoga, outside meetings. It is a good deal for $3700 a month compared to more expensive programs that was charge more, offer less and let you to just sit around while staring at breath taking views, eating gormet food like you are on vacation. So Amicus house is the most rigorous and serious program out of all of the programs I went to. It was very difficult and challenging to get through the program and you will kick, scream and complain the whole way, but no pain no gain and they will do more for you than any other program I know of. Ive attended. The staff is a very real, very professional, no bullshit, tell you how it is (even though your not ready to hear it) group of people. They have exceptional reputations with the courts, probation department, city council, etc. If legal trouble is the bottom that gets you into recovery they will go to bat for you. If you work a serious honest program and show the sincere desire to change your life they will express that to the courts and your life in the long run will be on beautiful beaches in paradise instead of a tiny cell. Many people have their complaints about this program. Especially the addicts and alcoholics who go through it. But lets get real people. The recovery business is a very difficult business to be in. Trying to save the lives of people who are killing themselves with drugs and alcohol is very difficult. My hat goes off to Amicus house and I am greatful for what they did for me while I was there. Even though I wrote a bad review earlier Ive realized that it is easier to criticize than praise. This program is excellent. Its no luxury vacation. Thanks to the A.H. staff...I " kicked & screamed " and resisted, but I guess that's what addicts do when LEARNING to change...All in all...A.H. was a good experience for me. The house was NOT filthy. ( as someone stated)....The rooms, clean...the food good (maybe not as much as " I " wanted, but no one starved) A.H. is NOT a Hotel. I did not go there to eat....I went there for RECOVERY.!! I've been to other facilities in the past that were more expensive and that had more perks, but in all honesty, this place saved my life. The staff members here are sincere and the support you get here is pretty awesome. If you really want recovery, this place really sets a strong foundation. They also help you with legal problems that you may have and Lori J. the Director and her other staff members are great advocates to have in court. After reading the last review, I found the need to write my own-as an actual resident of Amicus.Unless you have lived through the experience, you do not truly know the experience and can only view it and judge from the outside. Although relapse is common with us alcoholics, it does not have to be part of our story. If a person maintains a strong recovery program and uses all the tools we are taught at Amicus, one CAN stay sober! I am coming up on 2 years sober- no replases-no looking back. I truly believe that this is ABSOLUTELY because of the treatment I received at Amicus. For years I tried to get sober on my own. And please note- I am not a "minor" alcoholic(whatever that is) An alcoholic is an alcoholic-we don't have levels. Going through 30 days of residental treatment and then 5 months of the sober living home is truly the hardest thing I have ever done. And the best. At Amicus I was forced to go deep into my issues and deal with them. They tear you down to your foundation and then build you back up with a very strong one. I am not saying it was easy by any means. Lots of challenges and some days I hated it there. But knowing what was waiting for me at the other end- I was willing to do WHATEVER was asked of me to get sober. If people do relapse after this program they need to take a hard look at themselves to see if they were really ready to stop the insanity-really ready to be willing and let God and Amicus help them change their lives. Out of the 4 people that I was in residental with 2 years ago, 3 of us have maintained constant sobriety. The 4th has relapsed twice but is trying hard again to get this right. Bottom line-don't blame the program if it doesnt work for you or your loved one. It has been successful in helping to change hundreds of alcoholic/addicts lives for years. This program is not for everyone. It is not a fancy, hand holding, light touch program. It is hard core and will force you to face ugly truths. But there is light at the end. That light is that I am realizing all the Promises talked about in A.A. and I am about to celebrate 2 years sober. This place is horrible. During my stay here, one of the counselors, Dave had clients clean up Hep-C blood after another one of the clients had harmed himself in the bathroom. I was called "fea", which means ugly in spanish, by this counselor. It was a play off of my name but he made sure I knew what it meant, then told me people who speak Spanish could have a lot of fun with my name, then continued to call me by that rather than my real name for 3 consecutive days. When anyone does the tiniest thing wrong, the staff is very punitive and has a shame based approach to solving the issue. I also had an issue with my own counselor talking about me and asking questions about me to other clients, taking time out of that client's one-on-one time. When I brought some of these issues up to the owner, Lori, she dismissed them and shrugged it off. Regarding the first problem, with the name calling, she said "he probably just got your name wrong by accident," to which I insisted he knew my name and explained the whole scenario. She said it was just my word against his. They never made me feel like my opinion matter, or that I had any right to be upset with the way other clients and I were being treated. It's ironic because I came in there with a low self esteem, feeling like I was worthless and hoped to grow and learn to love myself while I was there. I left early because I started to hate myself more and feel like I matter even less the longer I was there. Don't go here. You are better off at a county funded rehab. read more

This place is disgusting. The first thing I noticed was that the entire house was filthy. Second thing I noticed is that all the clients were filthy. They all looked like they had not showered in a week or more. There was a 70 year old woman who could barely walk who also had a black eye? Next thing I noticed is that they were clearly understaffed. The staff was also not professional. The woman who did my intake was trying to make things sound better than they actually were. She said, "It sounds bad, but it's really not that bad." Who would say that about the business that they work at? Then they showed me around and it became more obvious how overcrowded they were. 2 sets of bunk beds in a tiny room with a tiny closet and nowhere to put your things. Everyone had all their things hanging off of the bunk bads. There was a girl there on her first day of detoxing from oxycontin and she was sick and wanted to lie down. They kept hounding her to come to group and participate and giving her an attitude. THAT is not ok. People withdrawing are very sick and need rest. So after that they stuck me in the group room without any introduction until they had time to finish my intake. The group room was filthy as well with run-down couches that looked like they were 40 years old. I sat there for a minute and decided I was not going to stay here. So I went upstairs and asked to use my phone so I could call for a ride. I was immediately treated with and attitude. They told me to think about it for a minute. I said no I would like my phone. Then their attitude got worse. They said you can use your phone for a minute but then we have to lock it back up. I made my phone call for my ride but did not give them back my phone. It is my property, I signed the discharge papers, so they have no right to take my phone. What if my ride got lost? So they told me I can't be on the premises with the phone. I told them that is fine...just give me my things And I will wait outside. They said that they didn't have time to do that right now because they didn't have any staff available because of the shift change. So I said ok I will wait outside and when my ride gets here I will come in to see if someone is available to get my things out of the office for me. So I went outside ON THE SIDEWALK (which is public property,) sat down, and waited for my ride. A few minutes later, the owner comes out with a VERY hostile attitude and calls my name out loudly. She ORDERED my to go all the way down to the end of the block to wait for my ride. I explained that this is the address i gave my ride so i will wait here because I don't want to miss my ride. So she then threatened to call the cops on me If I didn't move off of the sidewalk... which I already mentioned is public property . So, not wanting to deal with the drama of having the cops called I walked 2 houses down, and it was really weird because she followed right behind me, practically breathing down my neck. I sat on a curb and she turned around and left. My ride got there and his first reaction was "Is this a crack house?" Lori (I think that is her name....the owner) came outside with a hostile attitude and ordered me to come inside to sign paperwork where she continued to be hostile and interrogate me about why I wanted to leave. I told her that I did not feel comfortable and that I do not have to answer any of her questions. Let's just sign the paperwork, give me my things and I will be on my way. So we went back outside and all my things had been put on the porch and she said I could get them, but she was also handling my things as well as another staff member. Then she said she changed her mind and ordered me to get off the porch. So I waited by the car for them to bring my things. I started loading my things into the car and She was standing there watching me the whole time. She had a bag of my very important belongings which were my medications, my wallet with credit card, I.D., etc, and money. I asked her for the bag and she refused to give it to me. She told me that I needed to have all my things packed into the car, get into the car, and be driving away and that she would hand them to me through the window. THAT is not acceptable. I asked her why she was trying her hardest to make this difficult.Then I said...you will give me my belongings now or I will have to call the cops on YOU. She said no, that SHE is going to call the cops on me, and began to walk away with my money, wallet, credit card and medications. That was BEYOND unacceptable. Again, not wanting to deal with the drama of having the cops called on me, I succumbed to getting in the car and she finally gave me my items. This was a VERY traumatizing experience for me, because I had not been sober for very many days and I am a very fragile person. This experience could have ruined a persons chance at recovery, if it was their first try. I cried all the way home. read more

Amicus House is an excellent program. I was fortunate enough to enter Amicus in November of 2005. I had been in recovery before, but had made choices that led me back to active alcoholism and addiction and eventually into a state of complete helplessness. I had lost all hope, lost my job, my marriage and was unable to be a father to my son. The staff at Amicus house is well balanced with both professional therapists and educated clean and sober addicts that bring much needed real life experiences to the table. I was stubborn and probably would have been unable to listen to someone who had not been through similar experiences. If you think you can go to a program and somehow be magically cured or saved- good luck. Getting/staying sober requires willingness! Amicus House provided me with a fresh start. They re-introduced me to the 12 steps and 12 step meetings which are an important and necessary part of my ongoing recovery. I have been clean and sober since I entered Amicus house almost four years ago. I have my life back, my family, my son and have embarked on a remarkable career. I will forever be grateful to Amicus House and recommend this program to anyone who is serious about changing their life. read more
