It's easy to compare one place against another. I can talk about how one restaurant has an incredible steak, and another excels in chicken. What's much more challenging is when, in this case, a cafe competes against a memory. The last time I was in Montreal was 14 years ago. I was a relatively newly-minted teenager then. I was on a family trip, and someone in our group recommended "Hot Chocolate Cold" from a Second Cup Cafe. I loved it so much back then that I wanted a second cup (pun not intended). Though mom said "no," and that was that. Though I didn't yet have a Yelp page, I was already a foodie with the corresponding memory! That delicious thing was seared in my memory, and I knew I would definitely be going for it again if I was ever in proximity. I was in Montreal, and it was time. The first sips were terrific, of course. Though the subsequent ones felt a size too small. If you had me try to name something: it was a little more icy and slightly less sweet than I recall. It could be the recipe, my taste, or just a memory sweetened by time. Perhaps it wasn't something designed to be drunk immediately, but rather something to take time with. The little blobs of icy crystals needed some work to consume. It did have good hot chocolate flavors and wasn't overly sweet. The food is fair tasting, we were not asked if we want it warm to be served with. We ordered matcha and the blue drink, tastes so-so. The upside here is the place is sophisticated. They have bathrooms which is locked and keys are with the crew. Their bathroom has a baby changing station but they dont have high chairs. Ambiance is chill. Okay, I remember how I got here. At first, I had intended to get some brisket at Schwartz's and then didn't because I don't like rye bread, which is their only sandwich bread. Then, I went looking for a Portuguese restaurant since the streets around here have good Portuguese representation. There was one on St.-Laurent, but I wasn't crazy about the posted menu. I even went as far as to give brusque Chez Doval a second look, but their prices were much higher than I recall. Thus, I kept walking down the street toward Centre-Ville. Look at this! A bright looking and spacious Second Cup was a block or so down the street and I figured I could go in, recharge my phone, regroup, get something to eat and drink, and blend into the urban fabric of this fascinating French-Canadian city. It would be hard for a Second Cup to earn 5 stars, but this is still a very good store. It's a chain and one I much prefer over Starbucks when in the Maple Leaf Country. At this location, as I've already described, the interior is roomy, tidy, and with big windows all around and ample illumination. The hot drinks are reliable and they also feature nice looking baked goods. I didn't inquire about their preparing hot food, which I believe that, to some extent, they can do. The personnel was courteous and pleasant. Young people in the city of Montreal tend to have excellent bilingual skills. Finally, the prices are no surprise. They are standard coffeehouse prices. Maybe the four stars add up as follows: 1) clean and bright, 2) reliable hot drinks and baked goods, 3) pleasant service, and 4) fair prices. That said, why didn't I go right to this equation? Perhaps it's an issue with circumlocution. Befitting its location between downtown and Ave. Mont-Royal, a street that can cause my hair to stand on its ends, the people patronizing this Second Cup will definitely be colorful enough. And, because of stopping here and not having a full meal, I wound up at A&W on Avenue du Parc for a burger at around midnight, but I got an FTR out of that one. read more

The bearded chubby guy is unable to take a simple order, twice this week I have gone to get a small iced coffee and he always gives me a medium one, with the cup full of ice and a few drops of coffee, I end up payimg $5 for a cup full of ice. read more

Perfect coffee shop that is a chain yet still feels like an independent good quality coffee shop. I was pleased to see they had a matcha latte so I ordered a small and we also ordered a regular latte. We found a table easily and were served our coffee promptly. The matcha was delicious. Not too sweet yet it did have a hint of sweetness so it was easy to enjoy without having to purchase a sweet pastry. The restaurant was nice and clean and the employees were very friendly. I asked for nonfat milk for my matcha and they made it the way I requested no problem. There are lots of locations so we will definitely stop by this chain at least one more time before our trip is over! read more

5 stars for the amazing service! For a chain, this is such a nice place. The lighting, decor and furniture are great. Also the barista is so nice! After only going here once, she remembered the drink I ordered the second time I came in. It's definately noticably better than many other second cups in the city. The food and drinks are not going to be amazingly gourmet and special, but it's as good as a chain can be. Also, the almond croissants are always delicious. read more

This was a good experience, but the coffee experience didn't blow us away. The space was really pretty, airy, and open and the service was friendly and very helpful. My boyfriend ordered a black coffee and I ordered a latte. Both were so-so. The black coffee honestly tasted like it had been brewed too long and was super bitter. The experience was good - a great place to meet someone for a cup of coffee - but don't expect it to blow you away. read more

Usually what you would expect from a chain of coffee franchises: burned coffee and wrong orders. Clearly not a good place for coffee in any format. I got mine as a iced double espresso and almond milk. The after taste was horrible, it felt like I was licking the ashes of a pit fire. Burned as hell and the almond milk here in Montreal is awful in every single place. It tastes like carton, at least the local brands and the Pacifica which is the one that they used most of the time. They should start spending a little bit more in good non-dairy milk since they charge you a lot for it as well. They made a couple of intents in doing my coffee and my wife's so not a great service neither. This coffee shop is definitely out of my list! read more

This spot served as a safe haven for the cold. I'm not used to 7.F weather lol. In sheltering here, I was advices to try this by a few friends visiting Montreal too. This was deemed as the Canadian version of Starbucks. I ordered something simple, a café always does the job right. It's new years eve and not many stores are open just to chill and not being traped home, gladly this little coffee shop was open, service was good and fast, coffee and desserts average but is a good option if you just want to chill outside home in the cold. read more

I was staying right down the street from Second Cup Café for a few days and it became my regular stop for my morning coffee. Service was friendly and prices were reasonable. I do wish that they had the beverage list available on English as well, but overall I was satisfied every visit. read more
