If you're considering a large mortgage with this credit union: don't. They are simply not operationally equipped to service jumbo loans, and borrowers end up paying for their internal shortcomings. From day one, it's been clear their systems can't handle large payment amounts. For over a year, we were forced to split monthly payments because their platform couldn't process a single payment over a certain limit. Annoying, risky, and completely unnecessary for a lender offering loans of this size. The real disaster came after an escrow adjustment. Our autopay was set to "pay in full," but they never updated the amount. They kept drafting the old payment, marked every transaction as "succeeded," and never once alerted us that funds weren't being applied correctly. Instead, they quietly shuffled money across months internally, creating a cascading shortfall we had no way of seeing or fixing. We only found out after damage was already done. They refunded fees (which is basically admitting it was their administrative failure), but then refused to fix the credit reporting. So now we're dealing with credit impact caused entirely by their broken systems and poor servicing. Emails get boilerplate replies. Phone calls go unanswered. No accountability, no ownership, no real resolution. Bottom line: This is a small state credit union trying to play in the jumbo mortgage space without the infrastructure to do it safely. If you value your time, your sanity, and especially your credit, take your business somewhere that actually has systems built for loans of this size. read more

Been with this bank for over 20 years. Very mediocre, often times terrible. When they are just a bank, and leave you alone they're fine. That's it ... just FINE. Not great, not good, not even decent. Just okay. When you need them to do anything for you ... ANYTHING AT ALL, they're terrible. The worst customer service ever. Worse than McDonalds or Spirit Airlines. They do not want to do anything for you ... ever. And when they do they'll either screw things up, make things worse, or fail to even accomplish the goal ... costing you money. I tried getting auto loans and mortgages from them and no one ever called me back. Even going into the branch was useless. They'll find a reason to send you away and when you return you'll have to start the process over again from scratch. Then you'll be told different information, need different forms, or they won't be able to find or complete what you need done. They'll hand you off to someone who works remote and that person won't call you back. I had a business account and personal account with them. They'll nickel and dime you for everything. Every single task costs money. Fees for everyone! If you're $0.20 short on a transaction, but you have money in your savings you can expect a $30 overdraft fee. They won't auto transfer from one account to the next. Their solution? Open a line of credit! Okay, try to open one and it'll take WEEKS if it even ever gets done. Never come to this place. -- UPDATE: Even worse now -- Apparently they don't have overdraft protection, or their form of it is just absurd. Worst place to bank, understandable of procedures and policies but not the position of elderly members, my mom called 3 times to activate a new card, because her first card was left in SECU, and it hasn't been activated yet. The Rep spoken to said activated and, the Automated System said activated 2 days in a row get to ATM card invalid go pay a bill card invalid call the bank won't answer, (Greenbelt Md) office, mom in rehabilitation, they don't check to confirm your position. I have done everything I should do and these folks have the audacity to block my online account and try to prevent me from getting a new card when my account was hacked. Go somewhere else. They don't care about you...in fact they allowed my daughter to uncurr over $1800 in overcharge fees and such. Yes, I know it's her fault but I also know we put a limit on her so that once it met her limit she would be denied. Did that stop them? No. They wanted that money no matter what. Very disappointed. I've been helping my wife with her basic finances as she deals with some finicky memory issues. The folks at the Annapolis Branch are nice enough, but I've encountered all manner of difficulties with their e-banking and bill pay services. That follows with someone who repeatedly tried to attach Apple Pay to her account. We found out that one simply cannot shut off all attempts to connect to the account via services like Apple Pay, if say, one doesn't use that service. Back to our bill pay adventures:. First, it is almost impossible to set up e-pay for some very common banks and vendors. For both Wells Fargo and Bank of America credit cards, payment option defaults to paper checks. I still didn't find a way to go e-pay on my wife's Bank of America card. What's wrong with checks, you ask? Nothing, if they don't take too long to get there, and if the money stays in the account until the recipient actually presents the check for payment. SECU has the only bank bill pay service I've encountered that deducts the full amount of the check request from the account WHEN THE PAYMENT IS REQUESTED! Before they write it. Before they send it. Before the vendor gets it. Before the vendor presents the check for payment. In the case of a recent payment to Bank of America, payment was requested on March 26. That amount ($1,000+) was deducted from the checking account that day. A full week later, Bank of America still does not have a check in hand. Additionally, however SECU transports the checks issued by their bill pay service to the first mail box must be one arduous task, indeed. Most business mail gets where it's going in about 4 days or so. Judging by recent checks sent to vendors like Wells Fargo and others, expecting the process to take anything less than two weeks from request until receipt by the payee is way on the optimistic side. While the folks at the branch are helpful enough if they have authority, if one calls telephone support after hours or to unravel something more complicated, or explain 'mysteries' like these - good luck! read more

I've been banking at SECU since around 1987. They've always been helpful to me when I've gone into the branch or called their toll free number. I would've given them 5 stars except that my daughter had some significant frustrations with SECU a few years ago but I don't remember what those frustrations were. Examples of my positive interactions with SECU: * I had my mortgage with them at a good rate for a long while. I have since refinanced with another bank but I had no problems with SECU while they held my mortgage. * I had a car loan with them at a great rate of less than 3%. I eventually paid off my car loan. Yay! * I used to use their Bill Pay feature to pay my child support. I only remember one or two times when my ex received the check late; IDK whether that was the fault of SECU or the USPS. * I have multiple savings accounts to keep things separate. No problems there. * I have had a code word on my account for the last decade as an extra security measure. In all those years, there were only one or two times when a teller or customer service member forgot to ask for it before allowing me to go into my account. That's a pretty good record for 10 years. * I've had a CD with them. No problems there. * I've got a line of credit that automatically kicks in whenever I overdraft my checking account. That's a huge help. So, all in all, the last few decades with SECU have been a positive experience. read more

I'm literally afraid to call this business and address a problem. Have been a member for years, and it was never this horrible. Not sure what they recently tell their employees when they hire them, but the attitude and rudeness of these people is infuriating. You look in a computer at some numbers, not cure cancer. Get real. It is not only the tone and the dismissive responses, but also threats that they would cancel your account and open an investigation on you. Dude, chill, I only called to ask about a charge I do not recognize. It's like you bother them, and they punish you for that. And maybe SECU wants to thank me for having my money with you, not treat me like a criminal? Probably the most unprofessional, ridiculous bank I have ever dealt with. Employees are like teenagers who bully. I talked to maybe 5 or 6 representatives in the past two years, each and every time, you either cannot understand what they say, the connection is bad and they snap back, hang up on you, scold you/ and threat, or have the irritated reactions, like you are an idiot and they split the atom there. And there is never real help. I called a while ago to ask about some checks, there was this lady who mumbled something, put me on hold for 20 min, then came back and said she didn't know what to tell me. I was there confused, and she hung up. If I stopped a stranger on the street I'd probably get more help. You are truly not worth the aggravation. For the past 28 hours the ATMs have been off line system wide at SECU. I visited the Owings Mills branch and there were long lines at the drive thru windows and inside the branch due to this system wide ATM outage. I never received any email notifications about this problem and there were no signs posted at the ATMs notifying members that the ATMs we're off line and out of service system wide. I've been a member of SECU since 1992 and this has been my worst experience ever. I'm waiting for my CDs to mature in October so I can move my accounts and funds to Navy Federal. I do not recommend State Employees Credit Union of Maryland. read more

Not a very good bank. I lost my wallet and thought the bank has a "simple" option to temporarily freeze my cards until I could retrieve my card but no. While I search for my wallet someone got ahold of it and drained my account. The next card I received had all kind of secondary and third security apps, text and phone call I that was required to navigate in order to make small daily purchases. The app Crashes weekly. secondary security codes and passwords were attached to the card and had to be inputted every other purchase and customer service does not return calls. HORRIBLE!!! TERIBLE BANKING!!!!ASAP. I will be closing my account and returning to Wells Fargo. read more

I have been a member of SECU for several years. It takes a while to terminate a banking relationship, but I will be divesting myself of these people ASAP. My time, energy and sanity is just too valuable to deal with organizations like this. Credit Unions are allegedly "member owned and customer focused" vs your larger banks. It appears that SECU has forgotten that. There are several other much higher rated credit unions in the area. Go with someone other than SECU. You can never get anyone on the phone, they refuse to lend me a dime despite a descent credit history, employees don't really same to care. In my view, it's a bloated organization that really needs to be overhauled from the top down. Probably split into several smaller credit unions. A couple more weeks and I will be able to say good bye! Losing one member is probably not going to affect them, but enough leave they might change. read more

DO NOT USE THIS FINANCIAL INSTITUTION! Never missed a payment on our 6 year car loan and sent what we thought was the final payment in March 2022. They sent us this "final" payment back with no explanation. Fast forward to July 2022, they are sending us repossession letters and are demanding more money than what they sent back to us. What we sent would have more than paid the balance due without all the penalties they are charging. Probably the worst in the industry when it comes to customer service skills. I have been a member of MD SECU since the late 1980s and have been happy with them for the most part. However, the credit card contractor they have newly taken on is ABYSMALLY INCOMPETENT and their customer service is not doing very much to address the issues they are causing. The new card is getting denied everywhere I try to use it (after being activated and initially fine); there are fraudulent charges on my account that SECU identified, but they have yet to fix this; and the information I get in call after call with them and their contractor never matches what I see in my online account. In fact, the credit card number listed in that account does not match either the credit card I asked VISA to close (because I couldn't reach anyone at SECU) or on the new card! This confuses the heck out of the reps, as well! When you talk to the contractor reps, it is clear they have outsourced that customer service to Asia somewhere, and it really seems like they are very new to reading and speaking English and that they are trained to just keep talking--saying anything, but nothing useful--until you get tired and hang up. It is NOT clear what they can actually do for you. And they won't keep records of your issues or give you a case number to follow up with them if the issue remains unresolved. After several days of endless holds, absurd conversations with obtuse reps., and empty promises from other reps, my intention now is to close this account. It is pretty disappointing, but I can't imagine continuing to try to do business with their credit card dept/contractor much more than to settle my bill and get fraudulent charges removed (fraudulent charges they identified over two weeks ago). I doubt I am alone in this frustration...best of luck to my fellow SECU customers. read more

Since opening my auto loan with them last year I have had numerous issues with my payments being entered correctly and getting them resolved much less quickly is like pulling teeth out a cemented wall. The icing on this crap cake is that now because of their incompetence and errors my credit score has gone down by almost 100 points and with me being homeless and looking for housing they have made ut so I will continue to be this way until they fix what they broke. read more

Credit Unions are, in general, pretty awesome. They're owned by the members (why you have to belong to a specific group), and they pass the savings along (rather than up the chain to an executive in a corporate suite). I've belonged to 3 CUs in my life, SECU has been the best. 1)Easy to join: I did the paperwork online, mailed in the docs. 2)Easy to avoid fees: all banks are charging acct fees these days, at least the minimum req's to avoid them are pretty easy at SECU - direct deposit, online billpay and e-statements. 3) Modern systems: online access and billpay are simple and easy to use. They update very quickly...within minutes for a debit transaction. 4) ATMs: Chevy Chase bank lost me because their ATMs were frequently broken. The drive through ATM is modern and efficient - scans checks so you don't have to enter in the amount, and can do a whole stack at once. And, with the Allpoint ATMs, getting cash at 7-11 or Exxon is free...there are plenty of those around! 5) Customer Service: phone reps are great...both for banking, loans or tech support. Don't think I've ever waited on hold. Branch staff held the branch open late for me to finish with paperwork, and even made me a photocopy. The insistence on deposit slips, even at drive up tellers, is a little irritating, and I do wish there were more if those fancy deposit ATMs...you can only withdraw at the Allpoint machines. But all-in-all, SECU's pretty awesome... read more

Having an Android phone, I think it's worth it to update to say that SECU's website works on Android, iPhone, Blackberry and even non-smart phones. They also have an Allpoint app for Android, iPhone and Blackberry that can pinpoint Allpoint surcharge-free ATM. For non-smartphones you can text your location to 692667 (MYCOOP) to find nearby ATMs. If you have a POI compatible GPS (Magellan, Garmin, TomTom) you can download the database from the website to add ATM locations to your device. I wish I could give them a negative score. Have been a member for over 20 years. I've always preferred First Peoples but never bothered closing the SECU one because it doesn't hurt to have options. So, after 20 plus years, I receive a statement and realize they have been stealing money from me!! $3.00 a month for the past 4 months. No warning, no notice, no heads up. When I call, assuming they will fix things, I'm put on hold 20 times and then told I'm going to be transferred to a manager. Instead, I was sent to the beginning again and had to start all over. The next "helpful" person told me that I should have read about the monthly deductions online. According to her, I should just randomly log onto their site and read any new fine print they may have added. When I said that was not reasonable, she said I should have read it when I signed up for the account. I told her I signed up over 20 years ago and it wasn't an issue at that time. At this point we were mysteriously "disconnected". I called back and that person suddenly was having phone issues also. The THIRD call I told them to shut it down. Unbelievable! Worst bank or credit union I've ever dealt with. I paid the remaining balance on my loan so I could sell my car. They told me it would take 7-10 days for me to get the tile and I never received. I called them on the 11th day to find out it was never sent. I made a big deal about it because I told the buyer it would take 7-10 day. I ask to speak with a higher up and they told me I couldn't. All they did was keep transfer me between the loan department a title department. After doing this for a while they assured me that they were signing the title as we speak and sending it over to the buyers bank. As well as have a manager call me back. This new title would also take 7-10 days. We'll guess what 40+ days after the car has been paid off and still no title!! read more

I paid off my auto loan 3 weeks ago. At the time of payoff, the representative told me that the title will be mailed home 7-10 business days. Three weeks later I have not received anything, so I decided to give them a call. Turns out they never had the title, so they electronically released it to the DMV and I would have to go to the DMV in person to request the title. A phone call telling me this would have been nice instead of me having to wait for something in the mail. read more

They also lost my check to pay off my credit card with them so I could finally close all of my accounts but no- they lost the check then charged me interest on the card! Do. It's so disappointing to see SECU go down the drain after all these years. I have been with them for about 15 years now, ever since I was a teenager. I remember they used to have such great customer service. Now, the needs of the customer means absolutely nothing. All of the human Tellers have been replaced with automated machines. The machines are not user-friendly and can barely do basic tasks. This requires you to sign in for every little thing. There is one person at the front desk who is handling pretty much all of the requests. The other employees in the back of the branch try to help out too, but the problem is they take a long time because they are dealing with bigger requests (e.g. mortgages, auto loans, etc). It took me over an hour just to get a cashier's check! Getting rid of the human Tellers was the worst idea ever. It was SECU's attempt to cut corners and save money by reducing payroll costs, but there was clearly no concern for the customers who make up the credit union. I have since closed my checking account, and have removed all of my money from my savings. I've moved on to another credit union and don't intend on using SECU's services anytime soon. read more

As a freshman in college, I decided my current method of handling my money was insufficient and I took my piggy bank to Chevy Chase Bank. While I enjoyed having Chevy Chase ATMs EVERYWHERE, I didn't have any money in my account to withdraw, so those became useless. Not only that, but the student account used to have a $4 monthly service fee and I had to rush there once a month scrapping for $4 under couch cushions and in my car's ash tray. When I began making money as a newbicle to the cubicle, I stuck with Chevy Chase b/c the online banking was nice but I was constantly frustrated with all the different fees and customer service. After a few months of this, I decided to switch over to Bank of America, primarily because I could get my picture on my check card. I found their customer service even more frustrating, fees confusing, their online banking system clunky, the wait times at the branches unacceptable, and the constant bombardment of advertisements annoying. Growing tired of all that, I finally decided to switch to SECU, primarily b/c it reminded me of my very first chat program, ICQ. At this point, you're probably considering that old somewhat wise-saying: a fool and his money are soon departed, but despite a completely moronic method of selecting a bank, I'm very happy with the results. What I like about SECU: 1) They recently upgraded their Bill Pay system and the online banking system is on par with others I've used, if not better 2) You earn interest on your checking account, albeit minimal (0.20-0.35%) 3) I'm a Premier Interest Checking member. No, I don't have $10,000 minimum balance in my checking account. Yes, I do use Direct Deposit, Online Statements, and active Bill Pay use, so there's no minimum balance 4) Free box (or 2 for premier) of checks every year 5) Good CD and auto loan rates, though I've never taken out a loan from them 6) There aren't very many ATMs, so I can't get at my money. No ATM fees for All Point ATMs. For you students, there are SECU ATMs at UMCP and UMBC 7) Every time I've called, I've found the phone reps to be fantastic. The menu when you call the number takes quite a while but press 8 in the beginning to speak with a rep. 8) They're either a not-for-profit or they seek to earn a reasonable profit to enhance the customer experience. What I dislike about SECU 1) There aren't very many ATMs, so I can't get at my money. Yes, sometimes it's a pro and sometimes it's a con. My wife tends to think it's always a pro in my case. 2) The lines can get pretty long for the branch and the drive thru. 3) The service is acceptable. Although the Columbia branch is smaller, I've found the customer service there to be exemplary. For a good B&M banking experience, I recommend SECU. read more

This big bank will charge you SIGNIFICANT fees--one called an "uncollected funds" fee, and I was charged eight (8) of them on one day, PLUS an insufficient funds fee because the uncollected funds fees made my account negative. These are different from "insufficient funds" fees, but they still cost $30.00 EACH. They're very easy to incur ... if you deposit a check, you know that only a certain amount is "available". We all know this if we've ever had a bank account before. Well, if you go anywhere out of town and use any of their Allpoint/Cardtronics ATMs, DO NOT rely on the "AVAILABLE BALANCE" written on the receipt--it is wrong and instead shows your "current balance". Friday--deposited check; Sunday--withdrew from Allpoint/Cardtronics ATM and got "AVAIL: $X00" dollars believing it to be true that the check had cleared; Monday (morning)--checked account balance on secumd.org site and a few hundred in "Available balance"; Monday (night)--EIGHT (8) UNCOLLECTED FUNDS FEES ($30.00 EACH); Tuesday (afternoon)--one (1) insufficient funds fee ($30.00). And when you call the College Park branch, they don't answer the phone. When I called the main SECU branch, customer service: (1) asked me for a copy of the receipt which I gladly provided; (2) offered to waive a few of the fees but not all of them after most of my day stressing out and worrying, because it's my fault that I didn't know that unless it says "available balance" on SECU's site and ONLY on SECU's site, you are getting a "current balance" from the Allpoint/Cardtronics ATMs. DO NOT TRUST SECU, go with Well's Fargo--they actually TELL you about what "uncollected funds" charges are (several times) and give you the option when you open the account to opt out--and they make it CLEAR! I can understand insufficient funds fees, but: (1) charging fees for payments that just happen to clear RIGHT at 11:59 PM the night before the deadline when they are REQUIRED to honor the deposit; (2) ALLOWING ATMs in their network to provide an "available balance" amount knowing that there is a difference between "available" balance and "current" balance that customers in-the-know rely on; (3) blaming customers for not knowing that "available balance" means one thing from an Allpoint/Cardtronics ATM, and another from their ATMs; (4) charging eight (8) uncollected fees funds in one transaction on one night. Consider yourself warned, these people are not good. read more

SECU are a group of crooks. They overcharged me on my paperwork for my mortgage. I pointed it out to them a week prior and they said they would have it fixed. I go to closing, and it is still there. They say they will fix it by depositing it into my account. Ok, annoying, but I can live with it. I have now tried to take the money out by wire transfer, they want to charge $30. Then I tried to wire transfer through another bank I have, they claimed it was insufficient funds (it wasn't, I had even went a few dollars under just to make sure), charged me $30, and refused the transfer, and refuse to admit otherwise, even when I show them my balance, show them the amount withdrawn, they still claim that it is an overdraft. I looked at an ATM, they wanted to charge me a fee there. I looked at checks, and they wanted to charge me a fee for them! At this point SECU has screwed me out of several hundred dollars, I had let them know prior, and now I have no access to my money. NEVER deal with these people. read more

Purchased a car from this bank in Baltimore County, two years ago. My payments were automatic withdrawn from my account, every two weeks. I file bankruptcy but I did not add the car. Every since then, this bank has been having me behind on my car payments. I am constantly getting harassed by collection. Yet, my last car payment made was last week, before that in May. I have not missed any payments, but I am constantly getting calls, and getting screwed. I should have listened to my father and put the car in the bankruptcy. I've been a member for over 30 years. Few complaints & none that were not satisfactorily resolved. When SECU moved to the current online system, there were many bugs and this new interface IS NOT BETTER than the simple user-friendly online system it replaced. Every now & then SECU does not "play nice" with my Mint.com. Took them a while to resolve that issue. read more
