Ever since we lost our Segway virginities in San Francisco, we've been obsessed! Coming to ATX for the first time, we had to do it! It's not because we're too lazy to walk, (We walk a lot!) but Segways are just so frickin' fun! Even though we've Segwayed before, we still had to go through a quickie refresher and safety course before we got started. It was necessary, but it's also amazing how fast it all becomes second nature once you hit the streets. We opted for the Street Art Tour, but the tour covered much more than street art. We circled the State Capital, zoomed through streets, played around several parks, and made a fifteen minute stop at Baylor Street to climb the walls. We had a blast! A creative way to see any city is on a segway! Having done this in Asheville, NC and St. Aug., FL we thought this would be fun to take the Art Segway in Austin, TX with the bridal party! The challenge was to avoid people walking on the sidewalks we were riding on too. People were very kind to us, parting to allow us thru (probably fearing for their lives..lol) and cars not hitting us as the 9 of us crossed roads. Our guide, Alejandra was very engaging and helpful as some in our party wanted to roam off the trails....the guys. The segways also have safety devices that shut the machine down if anyone gets to adventurous...ie..the guys...lol. So though THEY had a few spills no one left with broken bones. Greatly enjoyed seeing Hope Hill where there is continuing street art being created...much better on segway then trying to drive or park near it to see it! read more

Word to the wise, it's called "Segging." Wear comfy shoes, and girls make sure your hair isn't in a ponytail, 'cause you gotta wear a nerdy helmet. But seriously, these babies go 12.5 mph at top speed and you can see a lot in a short period time. Zipping down 6th St, then Congress Ave. and then grabbing some gelato at Paciugo before seeing the bats come out from under the Congress bridge (August is the best month) is a super enjoyable excursion. It's not for small kids or people with stability problems... or people who like to break the rules. If you aren't smart, you can hurt yourself on a segway. But you can also have a lot of fun. read more

I had SO MUCH FREAKIN' FUN today. No, seriously, I did. It was my husband's birthday and getting him out of the house to do something different can be challenging. When I suggested a Segway tour, he brightened up. SegCity has an online special going on until the 4th of July, so I signed us up for an ultimate tour and because it is summer and hot as hell, I opted for the 9 a.m. tour. The first part of the journey is learning how to ride this thing safely. I was a little scared at first, I admit, because it is very different than anything you can imagine. You cannot make it turn my leaning, but you can make it go faster or slower by leaning backwards or forwards, or just pressing down with either your toes or your heels. Turning is done just with the handlebars and it turns on a dime. Our tourguide guru for the day, Levi, was very patient, cheerful and encouraging in teaching us the basics. The fact that his night job is as a stand-up comic helped all of us get comfortable and happy about our journey. When he determined that we were fit for the road, off we went towards some historic sites and then to the lake, across the First Street bridge and then around and about where we could experience a variety of terrains and surfaces and views, places where we could speed downhill in ever-widening circles (wheeeeeeeee!!) and slalom through convention center pillars. When watching people go around on these things downtown, I used to think they were slow and dorky. But when you are on them, you can actually go pretty fast....if 12.5 mph could be considered "fast". My dorky husband was completely in heaven. During the rest break, he just took off speeding through the park with glee. How cool is that for a 45 year old kid? We also learned some historic stuff about Austin that I did not know before. For instance - did you know that one of those big condo highrises is actually gold LEED certified? (Very difficult to get that certification - you have to be really green to get this certification.) It is either THE largest Leed certified residential buildings in the Country or top three, forgot which, but something to be proud of. If you have never done this, I really recommend it. It is not cheap, but for 2.5 - 3 hours, I think it is really worth it. It is comparable in price to a very nice dinner, but WAY more fun and memorable to do this and have a burger afterward. GO! Ask for Levi - he is awesome. If we lived in the City, we would totally get these instead of cars to travel around downtown. They are really really fun and cool. read more

Segways are just plain fun. For those who don't know what they are, they are an uber expensive 2-wheeled toy that uses a balacing system to get you around at up to 12mph. It's something you'd expect Bruce Wayne to have, zipping around his mansion. The tour and guide were ok, informative and engaging, but the best part of the tour was actually playing around on these machines. I don't plan on buying one of these bad boys just yet, so taking the tour was an excuse to see a bit of Austin, and at the same time get to ride on a Segway. Segways are so much fun... Really. I know it's hard to believe because it looks like a security guard or old person's ride, but we enjoyed ourselves. You do have to go through a training which lasts about thirty minutes, but you will pick it up quicker than that. You watch the others learn the ropes during that time, too. You will have to master the art of making it go and then stop, in a small space. *Yawn* But, once you get outside, if it's a beautiful day, it's worth the trip. I'd recommend a groupon, because it's expensive with the tip you add to the bill. They informed the group about this 'tip' thing for the segway tour guide, which I had never thought about prior to arriving. Thought that was included in the $130 for two people? So, we dropped $150 for a few hours of fun. If you must, I recommend trying it once for full price, but after that, make sure you have a groupon! The tour itself isn't exciting. Just basic information given about parts of the city that you've already been, but you'll feel like a kid again riding these things with the wind in your face. By the end, I got spied riding it with no hands, nostalgically reminding me of 'look ma, no hands,' bike riding days. Surprisingly the guide didn't say anything to me, but she didn't have to. I stopped, because I realized it was reckless, and probably more so than on a bike. In conclusion, don't do that last part, but do try the tour! read more

My sweetie got a Groupon for a Haunted tour from Seg City, mostly so we could try the Segways. After a short training session on balance and guiding the Segway, we were off for a cruise that ran round the Capitol, through downtown, across the river to the Long Center and back. Our guide gave us bits of info on the haunted history of some of Austin's landmarks, and just generally showed us a good time. I even got used to the Segway and started feeling like a natural towards the end. I will warn you in advance - I was sore this morning from using muscles differently than normal. Also, bring extra money, Seg City recommends a tip for the guides after the tour. read more

A tour of Austin on a Segway? I didn't know what I thought about it but my in-laws had gone on it a couple weeks ago and they said they really enjoyed it and they wanted to take us on it. I was telling my friends about it and they said they made fun of those people that did the Segway tours. Oh well, I guess I'm gonna be made fun of, I thought to myself. At least school is out so it's not as crowded. Anyhow, you have to go through Seg-orientation. It's basically a "how to" crash course for the Segway. The tour guide helps you get on, then you get a feel for the ride, then he has you go back and forth about 10 feet, then he puts out cones and you do a figure 8. It's pretty easy. I felt it was helpful that I am a snowboarder and balancing was easy. Then you need to practice your emergency stop. Piece of cake. It takes just a little getting used to, but it's no big deal. We had one guy on our tour that was upper 70's and although he did take a spill, after that he was fine. He had trouble getting from the street onto the sidewalks because it's inclined. After everyone is a Segspert, they get everyone on their Segway and away you go! The tour we took was not a talking tour, it was more of a riding tour. About an hour and a half you get to just follow the leader and have fun. We took some pics at the Capitol and some other un-notable place. The ride was good. Make sure you bend your knees when you go over something rough. It will help. Don't lock your knees or you could faint. Otherwise everything was great. Had a lot of fun and Riley was a great tour guide. Bring water, especially if it's hot out. Normally these tours are $60. On the weekdays, you can get it for half off and there are Groupons periodically for the same price. We went on a Monday for $30 each. read more

One of the highlights of my trip to Austin last New Year's was touring the city on a Segway... totally gimmicky but fun way to see downtown Austin! Not surprisingly, given the semi-steep price of the tour, my brother, my boyfriend, and I were the youngest folks on the tour -- the others were active retired folks whom we doubted could ride the Segways. Riding them is quick to pick up, though. They have you do a "test run" in the shop, doing figure 8's around cones indoors. You get super comfortable once you're off, and that's when accidents happen ;) (You wear a helmet the whole time, though, and the tour guides are pretty conscientious about safety.) The tour includes sights like the Congress Avenue bridge (home to the bats), the State Capitol, Town Lake, and the moontowers from the movie Dazed & Confused - pretty standard Austin stuff. Really, the best part of this tour isn't the tour itself (which isn't to say they aren't good - the tour guides are engaging and friendly) but getting to zip around on a Segway in the big square in front of the Capitol. Yeah, we hung a few turns too tightly and took a few spills... but it was loads of fun!! It's cool to get a chance to ride one of these things around (we covered about 7-8 miles?) without having to pay out of your ears to try it. The 2 1/2 hour tour was $65 pp plus tip. read more

i'm local to austin, but yes i went on a segcity tour and LOVED it! my friend andy took me, and he's a fabulous guide, extremely helpful in teaching us how to use the segways safely and also knowledgeable about austin and definitely taught me a few things i didn't know! i used to think segways looked dorky and never thought i'd get on one, but man they are fun! it's really a neat experience traveling on one downtown, and trust me, i bike and run a lot, so it's just a different perspective. we were also lucky to go on a beautiful sunny day with a great breeze. beware of seg legs! if your legs get tired, get off and shake them off, it's definitely helpful! my favorite part is just all the people that look at us and say hi, what a social thing to do! i recommend this for visitors and locals alike! read more

The Kid took to the SegWay right away but being 6'6" it took me maybe 10mintues to settle in. once we got out on the street we had a blast. i kept thinking 'why doesn't everyone have a SegWay?' and then i remembered, yah, they're $7000. our guide was very good and paid close attention to our group to keep us safe. we were on the bat tour but the bats didn't show up and it got too dark so we had to take off. our guide made up for the lack of bats by taking us to a building that had a lot of columns for us to play follow-the-leader through. First time on a segway - and as others have said, for the first 5-10 minutes you are unsure - by the end you are speeding. Great fun! This company provided a great experience from beginning to end. We received a helpful tutorial on how to ride the Segway and headed out for our tour, led by Raymond. In no time, the Segway was very intuitive and easy to maneuver. We took the ultimate tour which went by the capital, congress, 6th street (stopping by the haunted Driskill Hotel) and on to the river. We stopped at multiple places with great views for photos and Raymond was more than willing to take photos. My wife and I had taken another Segway tour in Austin several months ago, and although we loved the first tour, I and can honestly say, Seg City was much better! The tour took us to slightly different parts of the city and David, our tour guide, gave us a lot of factual information (where the other tour guide for the other company made up a lot of "facts"). Don't get me wrong, either tour is fantastic and the Segway is a very cool piece of technology. It's easy to learn regardless of your age. In just a few minutes, you'll be riding like a pro. Fun stuff! The tour itself is pretty basic, but the guide made it a lot of fun. Segways are really neat & getting to freestyle at the Capital at the end of the tour is worth the price alone. The first 45 minutes are devoted to training. Our group had young, old & some without great balance or grace, so don't fear looking silly we all did, but everybody easily learned how to control the Segways and had a blast. SegCity Austin is SEGSY! I did my first segway tour on a family vacation in Washington D.C. and it rocked! It rocked so much I wanted to do it again in Austin. Even though I've lived here all my life and know most of what any tour guide could tell me about the city I REALLY REALLY wanted to ride around on a segway again. My brother and I went on a 90 min. evening tour. Even at 6pm on a 100+ deg day it wasn't too hot with a nice segway breeze. This is the perfect tour for any Austinite- a riding only, no jibber jabber tour. Sweet-gsy! Our guide, Lindsey, was a fun college student who obviously loved her job. Even though we were on a ride only tour she slipped us a few fun facts of the city, stuff I didn't even know... Awesome! I recommend SegCity to anybody wanting a unique, fun way to tour the city. What a rip-off! The segways were fun to ride, but we paid a lot of money for the Street Art tour and all the tour guide did was have us follow her around downtown and occasionally stop in front of some street art. She passed right by a few cool pieces, she stayed way ahead of the group between stops and didn't talk to us while we were moving, then when we did finally stop, she couldn't answer any of our basic questions about what we were looking at. read more

As dorky as you look riding around town in a helmet on a Segway, I do have to say this is an absolute blast to do. We had so much fun. We (5 of us) book a 7PM "haunted" tour on a Monday night. This is the way to go. You avoid the heat during the day and the streets aren't as crowded so you can have a lot of fun with the Segway. The "haunted" tour is a 2 hr tour around the city that includes stops at some of Austin's haunted area. Our guide, Victoria, enlightened us at several stops with stories and history from Austin's spooky past. Our guide, Victoria, was extremely friendly. She reminded me of someone working at Disneyland. She was also knowledgeable and an excellent teacher. Before you begin your Segway tour, you get a lesson on the Segway. They, in our case Victoria, show you how to balance, drive, steer and stop the Segway. It's very easy. I 5 minute lesson will have you on your way in no time! The best part of this tour was going on the streets of the Capital building at night. The streets are closed off so no cars and there is very little pedestrian traffic. This is where you get to take the Segway to it's limit. Well up to 12.5 mph before the safety controls kick in and try to slow you down. I would have been perfectly happy doing laps around the Capital building like Nascar with Victoria being the referee and holding up caution flags when necessary. I would gladly do this again when I'm in Austin or any city that offers it. Try it. You won't regret it. read more

Let me start by saying that our tour guide (Riley I think) was great and put in a very unfortunate situation, so this review is for the overall experience! Segways are "the future" as my fiance says, so we try to hit a tour when traveling for fun. We were in town for a weekend and I had purchased a Groupon for two to the Street Art tour. As asked we should up 15 min prior to the start of the 2 hour (as described tour). The young man at the counter checked us in and we waited as a group for our instructer to arrive. The overall training process took 45 minutes for a few different reasons: 1) Two women showed up 15 minutes causing booking issues and needed retraining; 2) the desk guy was new and not familiar with the job responsibilites and therefore could not help poor Riley out; 3) the training process is super inefficient! Every other tour allows everyone to hop on the segway (after one demo for getting on) and then feel your way out on the segway, rather than doing one-on-one 2-3 min trials. Because of this, we lost 45 minutes and sat around waiting for everyone to take a turn. The tour itself was just ok. We saw maybe a total of 5 works of street art and the art park (which was the coolest part). Compared to other tours, this one was filled with a lot of sidewalks and street lights. read more

I would never think that going on a segway tour as something super fun to do but I did one while I was in Austin because the school I was visiting paid for it and it was really fun. It's like riding a bike but WITHOUT PHYSICAL ACTIVITY so you're just coasting around with a nice breeze. I don't actually know how much the segway tours run since mine was free, but I would definitely recommend going on one so long as they aren't super pricey. read more
