My wife bought a Balboa Peninsula Tour 4-pack through Groupon for my birthday. I was quite hesitant, since I have occasional bouts of vertigo, and I don't get along at all with hoverboards (the ankle biting neck wrenching back whacking evil cousin of the Segway). With that being said, I had a blast! Mike was our Tour "Glide", and although we made a last minute reservation that the office forgot to tell him about (along with the another tour before us), he was not upset and treated us as old friends with as much attention to our safety and enjoyment as we could ask for. After a quick video and some 1:1 test rides in the office, we were off! Mike was a fountain of knowledge about the area, knowing stuff I wasn't even aware of. He offered to take pics for us, make rest stops and let us fly at our own pace. Conversation was interesting and not tired. We rode in the streets, back alleys and the boardwalk. All of us being first-timers with negligible balancing skills, found the Segways intuitive to ride and a great experience. We all want one now, but at $5k each, I got noped. If you are concerned with people looking at you, know that most are jealous! I heard kids begging parents to do it and lots of people saying "we should do that". My only criticism is that the Segways don't have cup holders for beverages, but that's understandable (I guess). Don't forget to tip your tour glide, they make the ride fun and interesting. Park across the street in the lot if you can. It was about $1.40 for the two hours on a Sunday afternoon. read more

I was SO scared to try this -- See, I am NOT good with motorized vehicles, so I wanted so badly to do it, but at the same time, I was hoping something would happen to "prevent" me from playing mall cop for a day, "Yeah, I REALLY wanted to learn to ride a Segway, but they were closed!" That almost happened. We read the reviews on the Long Beach location, and they were really good. You could take your own self-guided tour there, but they never called us back. But now that I've done this, I think for first timers, self-guided is NOT the way to go. Orange county Segway called us back on the day of our Anniversary and said "Krystal" was coming on on her day off (Tuesday) and would take us and another couple on a tour. Uh-oh, I thought, now I can't back out! SO FREAKING FUN!!!! Even though 1 1/2 minutes after doing the tutorial and lessons, I pretty much did what they tell you never to do, I "aborted" my Segway, and then got ran over by it, then it jumped from the street onto the sidewalk, then finally jumped into a flower bed facing the opposite way that we were headed. ONLY ME hahahaha! Krystal told us to take a picture of where it landed because she never saw anything like it LOLOLOL! Krystal was GREAT. She is the quintessential-eternal Southern California surfer girl with many many other talents and trades. Laid back, chill, and candid. We loved her, and we will return due to her! After our experience, I'd have to say this is a great location. We saw dolphin, California Sea Lions and tons of schools of fish swimming in the clear turquoise waters near Balboa pier. She showed us all of the beautiful beach homes and the stories that surrounded them. She recommended a yummy Mexican food place a couple of doors down from the shop that was very good. Honestly, it was one of the best local anniversaries we've had! Sure, it only took me about a 1/2 hour and to really get comfortable on the Segway, but now I'm a pro, and have considered teaching the tour -- NOT! Try this, really, Y.O.L.O.!!!!! OMG, Krystal rocks!!! Had a 2-for-1 Groupon for the Newport Beach segway tour. Krystal led our small group of 4 on an incredible tour. The group consisted of me, my friend, a father & his son. You always start a segway tour by signing waivers, watching a safety video, & testing out the segway in the office before hitting the street. The best way to describe our experience was when the little boy on our tour put on his shades, jumped on the segway, & said: AWESOMENESS ACTIVATED!!! LOL :-D We rolled all around NB from the beach to the neighborhood. The view was incredible, the weather was perfect, & we were able to roll out (WHEE!!!) since we had such a small group. Krystal was an excellent tour guide who provided interesting information about the area for the duration of the trip. She also took the time to stop in the scenic spots, take photos, & send them to us afterwards. Luv her! If you're feeling adventurous, you should definitely take the Newport Beach segway tour. It was our first time riding Segways and he was very helpful in showing us the ropes & then leading us around the peninsula. There was a snafu with the scheduling and when we arrived for our 11 am tour no one was there! But I called service after no one answered and they were able to connect me with Carole, one of the owners. She was very responsive and apologized for the error, saying it was on her end not the tour guide's. We rescheduled for 1 pm and enjoyed lunch at Ruby's on the pier beforehand! read more

If you are not going to honor your hours of operation, or your pre-booked tours you should at least have the decency to call your tour and tell them it's canceled. What a blast! The 1st few moments on a segway are a little nerve-wracking as you don't really know what you're doing or how you'll keep your balance. But our tour guide was patient and informative and within minutes we were headed out the door and down the sidewalk. The day was absolutely gorgeous. We got to zoom along the boardwalk, through little back streets and alleys of Balboa, up-and-down the pier (out over the water) and back again. The experience is sort of a cross between driving a car and riding a bike. It is just really, really fun! We purchased our rides through Groupon and I'm really appreciative to the business for offering that because we could not have afforded it otherwise. I hope to make another segway trip this summer. Below is a message I just sent to the owner of the business. Hopefully the owner was also not the manager I spoke with yesterday. In any case, avoid this place like the plague. You'll have a much better experience at Balboa Fun Tours down the street on the corner Balboa and 20th street next to the 7-11. To the owner of Segway of Orange County - you should know that the manager of your store, I think his name is Frank or something like that, is the biggest jerk in business. You will lose business because of him. I called your store by mistake yesterday (Sat 9/6) looking for Balboa Fun Tours, and instead of even extending a common courtesy to prospective customers, he was a total jerk and was angry as the called was a bother to him. You would think a business person with any common sense would have used the opportunity to win business from the caller. I called back and asked to speak with the manager or owner, and the call was answered by one of the guides, who was courteous as expected and when I told him why I wanted to speak with the manager or owner, he said he agreed with the opinion about this jerk, but unfortunately the jerk is the manager. Fun Staycation Day!! We decided to do things in Orange County for vacation this summer rather than traveling out of town. Our first adventure was riding segways in Newport Beach. We had an awesome time! Our tour guide, Jana, made it enjoyable and informative. Riding the segways was easy to get accustomed to quickly. #300th review! I have seen people on Segway taking tours around San Francisco city and was like meh, I can walk around. I feel SF city is best to be toured around by walk or any other mode of transportation except by driving. So my husband bought this groupon offer for the Segway tour at Newport Beach. I was not that excited. We parked (parking is convenient if you are early by 10ish and everywhere its 2 hour parking - sucks coz you need to feed the meter) and entered the office. The guide was the receptionist as well and explained and showed demo on how to ride the Segway. She gave us time to practice and also asked us to navigate left/right/reverse/forward/slowing-down etc. The moment we stepped out, I was thrilled and loved every route we took. The best part of Segway tour is that, we were allowed to ride on places where bicycling was NOT allowed =P YaY! We went during the 4th of July weekend and even though foot traffic was a lot, we were able to tour without any issues. I feel the best way to tour and have fun at the same time, to all the spots in Newport Beach is through Segway coz the guide didn't miss out a spot. I live in the Bay Area and was going to Irvine for a business trip and wanted to do something fun while I was down in that area. I purchased a Groupon for a 90-minute segway tour. On the day of my appointment, I arrived 15 minutes early and Russell welcomed me in. The place was easy to find and there was plenty of parking across the street and on the street sides. Across the street, there is a 2-hour parking lot where you can purchase parking tickets with quarters or your credit card. The group that also was scheduled to go on the tour was 15 minutes late but Russell made sure he taught me how to use and ride the segway while we were waiting for them to arrive. He was super nice and very friendly. The tour was awesome! We got to visit the pier and also visit some interesting spots in the nearby neighborhoods. We got some historical background on some of the places we visited and Russell made the tour very fun. He also took pictures of us when we wanted. This was my first time riding on a segway and it was a lot of fun. Definitely a neat way to sight see and get around. I'd totally recommend doing that at least once. This was so much fun! Came here with the parents and the husband. Segwaying takes a few minutes to get the hang of it, but once you get it, it's awesome. The only thing I didn't like was how our tour guide made us stop off a couple of times to take a break. Other than that, the tour was exciting and there was lots of great sights to see. I had a lot of fun here. Riding a Segway is actually a bit more fun than I had imagined. When I see mall cops riding these, I always thought it was very stiff and not too interactive, but actually the Segways are responsive to leaning and your feet. Our guides were cool and very nice...not pushy and bossy. The tour starts with a little instructional video and then a test ride in the store. Then it goes outside to the pier and through the back alleyways of Balboa peninsula towards the Wedge, where you park for about 5-10 mins to take a rest and back to the store. This was the 90 minute Groupon we used and I would consider doing it again. One advice to the store would be that sometimes you can't really hear what the tourguide is saying if you're back in the line, but usually it was just side comments about the homes in that area and some kind of color to their stories, but no biggie. The real fun is just riding the Segways themselves anyways and the nice tour guides. It would also be nice to have just rentals without the tour groups, but I'm sure there are other liability issues with that. But if they ever do that in the future, I'm definitely in! Highly recommended and a good idea for those who want to entertain family and friends from out of town. read more

We took the 2 1/2 hour Newport pier /Balboa island tour. Preston was our tour guide. He did a fabulous job. This was our second time doing a Segway tour and all 4 of us loved it! Loved the tour area of Newport and also going across on the Ferry to Balboa Island. Would have been fun to stop and maybe had some more time to enjoy Balboa but it's difficult to maneuver because it's such a tight area. People are probably the biggest disadvantage to this tour because the are rude when they see us on a sidewalk and Preston and our group were always extremely polite when riding near people and cars. Which was always. You pick your helmet, have a short 5 min video on training and safety and then they give you a short demo at the store. Would definitely use you guys again!! read more

We were in a party of 4 with 2 moms and 2 sons(age 13) and it was fun for all of us. We became pros and he watched us intently the whole time for our safety. Our tour was at 1pm we arrived at 12:30 to check in and it was closed. I called Segway at 1pm since it was still closed and no one appeared to be coming and it kept sending me to voicemail. I finally was able to reach someone and she didn't have any idea what was going on and she said that she would give me a call back and let me know.
