I was referred by my Scripps Torrey Pines doctor and scheduled online. Shortly after, a staff member called to "confirm" my insurance (GEHA) but was curt and unprofessional. She didn't take time to verify coverage or offer a self-pay option, even though GEHA typically covers physical therapy with authorization. The interaction felt dismissive and unhelpful. Fantastic experience at Select Physical Therapy on Ruffin Rd. All the staff was friendly, knowledgable, and very skilled. Tyler was my PT and he is amazing. Super motivational and friendly, along with being realistic and forthright about my condition and treatment. His intern David was also excellent, and Tyler trained David as they worked on me, which was a great experience for all three of us. They flexed my treatment depending on what I needed that day. In 2016 I began feeling a mild discomfort in my neck and back. By mid-2017, I was experiencing severe, shooting pain in neck, shoulder, back, and right arm. I saw multiple doctors, had multiple tests done, was prescribed pain killers and muscle relaxers and nothing was helping. I was I so much pain I couldn't sleep. Finally, my doctor ordered me an MRI and I was prescribed physical therapy. I was sceptical because I had already tried physical therapy for this problem but did not see results. My doctor's office suggested Select Physical Therapy off Ruffin road. As soon as my insurance approved the PT I called Select and they were able to fit me in the very same day. I had a consultation with Jodi and within 5 minutes of talking to me she knew exactly what was wrong and was able to pin point exactly the root cause of the pain. That's when I knew this time was going to be different. Over the course of 3 months, Jodi and the team worked with me to strengthen my neck and back and most importantly provided me with the tools and knowledge I need to continue to care for myself at home. I am no longer in chronic pain and I am sleeping through the night (which my boyfriend also appreciates). I am so thankful for the care I received from Jodi and the team I cried at the end of my final visit. Jodi and the whole team was so flexible with my work schedule. They we're kind, courteous, attentive, professional, and fun to be around. I truly looked forward to going to physical therapy. Drew, Rachel, and Jennifer we're incredible! My first ever experiences with physical therapy began this last December after a lateral malleolus (ankle) fracture - classic soccer injury. I started PT in NYC and was not sure if I should pursue therapy on my winter break back home in SD, especially after multiple failed attempts to schedule with UCSD Health. I happened to receive a recommendation from an old college friend to see Dr. Paul Hodges at this Select location and I'm so glad I did! Each experience from the moment I called was beyond expectation. I appreciated the assertive treatment and definitely felt significant improvements in my strength, mobility and range of motion from my short time there. I only wish I had more time with them so they could get me back up and running on their cool turf field! Renee is good at what she does and her primary focus is her patients' care. I've had a few surgeries (Knee-ACL and both shoulders) and went to previous Physical Therapists who did a fine job but Renee offers knowledge and a passion about what she does that is comforting and healing all its own. Even after I healed from the surgery that originally brought me to her I keep going every so often as preventative care. As a sports-playing, active professional I value her thorough, no-nonsense but patient and experienced help to keep me injury free now. Last year I started coming here after my hip replacement, Lauren is who I initially saw. She's since moved offices, but she was great! I started PT here two weeks ago for a herniated disk in my neck with Dr. Christin Ernst, and I had doubts going in--I was both a little nervous about the therapy and also what good it would do. After finishing my second week, I'm more than impressed, and can't recommend the facility (and Christin) more highly. I've been able to move around much, much more and have had less pain than I've had in years, though a lot of work has been required on my part, which is to be expected, of course. But Christin is very careful to keep a fantastic line of communication open--as are the other therapists at this location--to do what I can tolerate and work very slowly with me. The facility is very busy, but they work great with scheduling. The reception staff is super friendly and kind, and they are very knowledgable about insurance stuff, which is very helpful. The support staff and techs work really hard as well, and are great with names--the place is always full when I go, but they manage to keep patients moving really well. I'm really impressed, and will recommend it my friends and family. I start with heat and finish with ice, which helps a lot, and also helps the recovery time between sessions. I've learned so much about what I can do (without drugs) to help increase my mobility. I have been feeling so much better, much to my surprise. Thanks so much! read more

I wanted to wait until I finished my physical therapy program to write this review but my level of appreciation for the team at this particular select physical therapy can't be stifled. I've torn my acl 4 times and had 3 replacements and 1 revision. My last replacement surgery (aug 2022 acl #3) was the worst recovery I've ever dealt with and stretched far beyond what it should have for a 28 year old athlete. I got my acl revision and bone graft surgery nov 2021 and my recovery process has been a dream this time around. I was told I would never work in my field again (restaurant biz) because of arthritis which was truly heart breaking as it is my passion, Dr.Tyler Bacarro (amazing) stood by my side and refused to except such a fate for a young athletic active individual. I have been putting in work twice a week with Tyler (DPT) and Erin (PTA) and I can proudly say I feel better than I have in 5 years. My knowledge has grown, my reality has changed, and I know I can achieve most of my athletic goals and get my butt back to work in my passion and its fully due to this team. At select you truly get spoiled. Rockie at the front desk is amazing if it weren't for her efforts with my insurance I would be in some cookie cutter PT program in my way to my next surgery. !!!!! My concern after knee replacement was that I wouldn't be able to regain my former lifestyle. My therapist, Heather Haworth, explained how to do the exercises she prescribed for me, as well as telling me why they were important for my recovery. She made suggestions of ways I could replicate the exercises at home even without the equipment that was present in the office. Today was the last day of my therapy, and I am now able to take long bike rides, strenuous hikes, and swim the 50 laps I did before surgery. I remain impressed that all the employees are tuned into providing great service with a positive attitude. Good physical health is an important component to personal happiness, and I believe that Select Physical Therapy never forgets this principal. read more

I don't usually write negative reviews and I have waited for over a month to write it so I would "cool down" before writing this one. If there was a rating system for less than one star the Regional Management @ Select PT in my opinion would deserve it. Due to injuries acquired 30 years ago I have been to many physical therapists in 3 different states and I finally found a really good one at Select PT at 3939 Ruffin Road, San Diego. What happened there today (May 20, 2021) was just wrong! I would like to take this opportunity to express my very deepest disappointment with Select Physical Therapy...not the therapists themselves, who have been hard working, knowledgeable, dedicated to helping their patients heal & live a better less painful life including me, but only to those who made the cold hearted decision to let go the entire PT staff in a meeting that morning. I had been a patient there for several years and the environment was always "upbeat" with many patients. Imagine going to work and being "blindsided" finding out that day that you no longer have a job from that moment on...AND... they did this during Covid...Please don't tell me "it was just business, nothing personal" it is very personal to those employees and patients! Not only do the Therapists set up a regimen of exercises for your individual condition, but they are also are hands on with manual massage therapy. They genuinely care about your condition and assist in many ways to help in your recovery. I have seen both Jodi and Kristin who are truly amazing. I would definitely recommend Select Physical Therapy for anyone interested in a healthy recovery. read more

I, in all good conscience, cannot recommend Select PT in Kearny Mesa to anyone while Renee' is the owner/Mgr of this (and other Select PT) facilities. While doing my PT after having back and knee surgery, there was a flood in the facility. Having been in the flooring business for over 38yrs, I realized that there was a very strong smell of mold & mildew throughout the PT area. The property mgr did the exact wrong thing by putting a high speed air mover in the PT area which only blew the spores around the therapy area (unknowingly due to the fact that they simply don't know how to care for this situation professionally) causing more trouble than if they'd just left it alone. I very discreetly took Renee' to a secluded area in the PT facility to alert her that the odor everyone is smelling is mold. Mold doesn't smell like anything else in the World and is extremely damaging to the respiratory system and could kill someone with any sort of a compromised immune system. I pointed all these facts out to Renee' only to be completely blown off. I then proceeded to the "regional mgr" who (I had no idea) was Renee's husband and also did nothing. I was asked by the staff to write a letter meant for the property mgr to handle this properly by getting the facility cleared out, sealed off and have a dehumidifier or 2 brought in to dry out the soaked area. Renee' was so angry that I spoke to her husband/mgr about this serious issue that Renee' decided to discontinue my PT care making it nearly impossible for another Physical Therapist to figure out where we were at after 2 months of using the same Physical Therapist. I called around and other facilities were very frank about how they'd be "flying blind" trying to figure out where I am with my care. So, I began trying to do the exercises I could remember from my gym and, basically, my improvement stopped. My knee is still very weak and doesn't bend completely - this after 7 months since my surgery. If this isn't enough of an issue, my co-pay was $20 with my Ins paying the balance. I have just begun receiving bills from Renee' and Select PT for over $20,000 due!! Charges from Renee' and Select PT include $50 for putting the ice pack on my knee (more than 40 individual charges for this!) and $200 for "Evaluation" each time I returned for care....15 minutes of manual therapy - $250!! Obviously, these charges are grossly exaggerated and Renee' is clearly abusing her position and trust in the health care industry by seeking some sort of vengeance against me for trying to simply alert those who were in danger. Clearly, this exhibits that Renee' is still upset that I tried to help those unaware that they were in danger while she only cared about making money - even at the risk of the health of those she's supposed to be caring for. For these reasons, I tell you, the community, that you can not trust Renee' or her facilities (she owns several) with your health for concern that she will not be open minded enough to consider that someone who has a career of experience with mold and mildew and knows what needs to be done, won't be trusted enough to be given consideration that I was right in my assessment of the threat. As a result, Renee' would rather go to war trying to win something to make her feel better about her position of power instead of realizing that she's supposed to put the care of the patients first.... which she obviously doesn't. As a result of her behavior, she has put me in a position of having to take legal action in order to stop her abuse against me both physically (as my PT care was never completed) and financially. read more

I've been to many physical therapy locations with many companies and there are none as good as this organization and this location in particular! Paul is my therapist and he has been critical in my recovery. He gives such a concise, understandable over view to the exercises, so that you know what you are doing and why. Paul is just one of many integral members of their team that all work together to provide the best care to their patients. I have seen Dr. Renee Stetkevich, DPT for a series of PT visits over the last 6 years for a slipped disc issue. She is incredible to say the least and each time I've worked with her, she has been extremely helpful and most of all professional. She has extensive knowledge and has done her best to get me healthy quickly each time. The entire staff at the Kearney Mesa location is wonderful. They are helpful and go out of their way to make your experience the best that it can be. And when you're someone that is in pain, this goes a long way to making the entire experience an extremely positive one. The facility is easy to find and very well maintained. And even though a lot of the patients are in pain due to their injuries, the staff maintains a happy and positive environment. I want to point out that I drive out of my way to come to this facility because I believe in Renee so much. My goal was to get back into yoga (to kneel and squat) and I've started short training sessions again. I saw Paul for therapy after I broke my ankle playing roller derby. He treated me like an athlete from day 1, and really partnered with me to make sure I would reach my goals of skating and running again. I began attending Physiotherapy Associates 4 days after I had shoulder surgery for a labrum repair. Out of my list of around 30 physical therapy places that I was given from my orthopedist doctor I chose them based on their stellar Yelp reviews and I am so glad I did! I was assigned to PT Jodi Tam who is absolutely amazing at what she does! I attended PT with Jodi for 7 months and became very familiar with most of the therapist and assistants here. All of the therapist (Jodi, Renee, Kristin, and Paul) and the assistants (Kristi, Almer, and Justin) are extremely knowledgeable and truly care about their clients well being and getting them back to as close to full ROM and function as possible. Each session included about 20 minutes of deep tissue work with my therapist, Jodi, and then I would work on exercises for about an hour and would end with icing and the stem machine for 10 minutes at the end of each session. What I loved most about this place was the family vibe. They are like a big family and treat their clients like family too. The PTs and assistants are very friendly, funny, and outgoing. I walked out of here being able to do everything I had hoped I would be able to get back to doing after surgery which mostly included everything CrossFit. Yvonne at the front desk was equally as great and was always very professional and always greeted me with a warm welcome even at 6:55am when I would show up for my sessions. I will definitely miss the therapist, assistants, and front desk staff and this place as a whole, but hopefully I won't have to return anytime soon. In 2007, I had a spinal cord infarction which initially left me completely paralyzed below my neck. Several weeks later I broke my neck and had 3 spinal fusions. It has been a very difficult road and I have been through a lot of therapy. I have made some great progress but am also a very complex case. My symptoms are not typical and are definitely not predictable. About a year ago I moved to San Diego and started receiving Physical Therapy from Dr. Christin Ernst. When I started, I was wearing an AFO on my left foot/ankle. My balance was not great, I needed my cane to get around at all times, was dealing with spasms and tone at a fairly high level and much more. Over the last 9 months of therapy with Christin I have had GREAT improvements. She arranged for me to get a new AFO (brace) and worked with the company closely to make sure it was the best it could be. I am now so much more mobile, more steady, faster and best of all..... FOR THE FIRST TIME, I AM ABLE TO WALK WITHOUT MY CANE! Christin is working hard with me to make sure I build my endurance and stamina and that I am safe. Right now I can only go short distances, but I continue to beat my prior milestones and am confident that things will only get better. One of Christin's greatest assets, aside from her knowledge, is that she listens. Every visit she asks me how I am doing and adjusts the therapy to accommodate whatever I am dealing with that day, but yet continues to push and encourage me. She and the rest of the office have gone above and beyond my greatest expectations and go out of their way to make sure that they are giving me the best care possible. I was treated here for nearly 5 months by Paul Hodge for a lower back injury that completely side lined my life. I had to stop working, and was unable to do my normal physical activity routines; which for me is a nightmare. It was a painful, frustrating, and honestly scary thing to experience when you've not reached 30. Over the months I slowly gained back strength and confidence and have since returned to my normal fitness regime except better now, as I've learned a lot at therapy. Paul was very competent, professional, but also very human in dealing with me and my injury. I was given a routine to continue outside of our sessions which helped me immensely and still do. Upon leaving I had a slew of exercises to keep myself in check, and now two months after leaving I'm still doing great. While I was there I also saw Jodi several times when Paul was out on vacations. She was on top of everything and continued my care with the same the control, knowledge and professionalism as Paul. Everyone at this location was wonderful; the PT Aides were always helpful and the front desk worked with me often to sort out insurance issues and the like. I hope I don't need to ever go back to Physical Therapy again, but if I do I will not hesitate to come back here. Paul made gave me his card on my last day and made sure to tell me if I had any questions to email him, and if any flare ups occurred in the future to not hesitate to contact him. I highly recommend this practice in particular for all the good its done me, and I cannot thank the team enough for giving me back my life. read more

I searched for two months for the right place for my daughter Caelyn, to do her prescribed PT. it was very hard to find a place with after school hours and that was not only kid friendly but experienced with pediatric patients. Physiotherapy Associates met and far exceeded my expectations. My daughter saw Dr. Christin Ernst, PT, DPT, OCS. And if you are looking for a caring and experienced Physical Therapist, she is the one to see. My daughter was very scared and timid about going but from the moment we arrived Christin put her at ease and my daughter looked forward to her therapy days. Christin uses fun techniques to ensure that the kids are getting what they need but making sure they have fun with it at the same time. My daughter is very shy but admires Christin beyond belief. She was very upset the day she was discharged from care because she didn't want to stop working with Christin. To this day Christin is who she wants to tell first when she accomplishes one of her fitness goals. Christin is not only a physical therapist to her patients but also a friend and a motivator. She encourages all of her patients to work to their highest capacity and motivates them to achieve their goals. I must say that if active military or the VA ever recommend vets and active duty military to Physical therapy this is the place to be. I've been in pain since I was medically retired from the military in 2011 and I've been working with Jodi for over a month and I've never felt better. She really knows her stuff and is very knowledgeable and pays close attention to detail. I have to say after going to over a dozen of therapist and doctors she has to be the best in the business. All around you can tell that this is a place where the therapist are trained and know what they are doing. The are committed to their patients. Trish she is always on top of things and is very professional. As a vet who have served my country for 12 years, it's an honor to know that there genuine people out there fighting to get us back where we was before we was injured. This clinic should be rated #1 in San Diego. I've seen the amount of care and support each therapist gives and it's never anything less than 100%.
