I guess there is a side entrance for outpatient services but nobody mentioned that to us. The third time was an ER visit for my wife. Upon checking in, they got her vitals but then it was several hours before we were called back. The PA who saw us was very professional, but it was odd to have so many different nurses and techs provide services from IV, to x-ray, to labs. They were professional, but again I'm not a fan of so much waiting around. Also, the treatment area was not private at all, basically hospital beds and chairs separated by curtains. We could hear the details of the patients all around us and I suppose they could hear us. More privacy would be appreciated.

They gave me dairy multiple times, so I had to skip eating. Men were the attendants during my short time there - One of my medications is $13k/month. It HAS to be kept refrigerated. This is clearly marked all over. I had to raise hell to get them to put it in the fridge before it went bad - meds were changed without discussing with me or my prescribing doctor(s). this is also written on my med bottles too - meds were denied when needed ex I HAVE to have sucraid and hyoscyamine anytime I eat or I end up in the ER - They blew out all my veins on my arrival day trying to get blood work. Demanded they try again the very next day, but everyone knows veins need time to heal after being blown. Talk about painful and pointless - their daily schedule says - as able - but they strongly discourage getting rest in your room. It is not approved. - activities they demanded participation in = --- 'yoga' which consisted of someone in a cold harsh monotone telling to do stretches. Bright harsh lighting, no soothing music or any music at all. As a yoga teacher, no this is not it. --- group therapy, was a joke. The therapist(s) treated everyone like children and said the most basic things. No one ever shared or was able to open up for this reason

Anyway, he suggested that I go to the ER at the VA to get a Podiatry referral, so I did. It really didn't seem practical to refer me to the ER--the place that you go for emergencies--to get a referral, but I happened to be in the area. ‍ I went to the ER on 24 Jul 2020 @ approximately 1530hrs. Parking was easy & close to the door. The 2 ladies who greeted me there were very friendly & cheerful while they took my temperature, asked if I had any signs of COVID-19, or if I'd been around anyone who was symptomatic. Then, they sent me back to the ER, where I was greeted by two very professional men who wore tags under their nametags, showing that they were Air Force & Marine Veterans, respectively. They quickly & politely signed me in & asked me to have a seat in the waiting room until I was called back. (There's a separate waiting room for untested people who have COVID-19 symptoms.) Within 10 minutes, I was in an exam room in the back & the Nurse told me that the Physician would be right with me. She was absolutely right---in less than 5 minutes, Dr. Roshni Dhoot came into the room. Dr. Dhoot examined my feet, agreed with what my civilian Podiatrist told me, and quickly got me a referral to the Podiatry Clinic. As a former Oral Surgery Technician & an Operating Room/Infection Control Nurse, I probably know a little bit more about infection control than those who don't work in hospitals. I'm no expert but, based on experience, I would say that the ER, the exam room, & the waiting room appeared very clean; everyone was wearing a mask, and they used alcohol hand sanitizer frequently. Every single person at the Durham VA was extremely kind, professional, polite, helpful, and had a very positive attitude---I thought that they treated me, an Air Force Veteran of 22 years, with great respect & consideration. And no, I'm not a retired Colonel or General; I worked my way up from an E-1! I really wish that I'd brought a pen & paper with me so that I could've written down their names & thanked each of those VA Hospital employees by name! Yes, the VA Hospital is older, as are a lot of military facilities, and it could use a facelift; but, I don't think that the appearance of it affected the great care that I received. As to that, I'd just have to advise that we vote ONLY for Politicians who have a measurable track record of truly caring our military and Veterans. Unfortunately, improvements can take awhile within the Federal Government--and, that's an understatement! Thank you to those who took such outstanding care of me last week: you made a very positive impression on me! If I lived closer to the VA Hospital, I'd be honored to work there, caring for those who fought for our Country!!

When I arrived in the room, I was promptly greeted by RN Michelle Long. She was caring, compassionate, professional, and incredibly efficient. While I waited to see the physician, she made sure I was comfortable--offering water, providing the Wi-Fi password, and checking in to see if I needed anything else. I was seen by the physician shortly after and treated appropriately for my complaint. The entire visit took about two hours, which is truly impressive for an ER visit. This is for the clinic portion on Medicine Circle off Trent. This area is much easier to manage…read morethan the main hospital. It's color coded and there's plenty of parking. You do have to walk across the indoor bridge to get there unless you valet park. They charge $2 an hour for parking. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Everything is done with an arm bracelet for things such as lab or testing. I had an appointment with neuromuscular department. The physicians and therapists are excellent. They're very thorough and up to date on current medicines and trials. The EMG center is in the same clinic so it's super convenient. Being part of the Duke portal is convenient for Atrium Wake Forest and Cone Health because all testing is visible and they can also see visit notes from the doctors. It makes it possible to see providers from different networks and not having to bring in or sign for your records to be shared. The facility is massive and the color system makes it easy to find your way. There are several labs so you don't have to walk a mile to get to one. Most walk in tests can accommodate with minimal waiting. It's about a quarter mile walk from the parking garage to the clinics so wear comfy shoes or walking device. You will have a lot of walking to do and there's limited seating in the main corridors.
