I wasn't entirely happy with the alterations made to my dress between the first and second fittings (felt too tight around the thighs, felt like I couldn't sit comfortably etc) and I was told "that's just the fit of the dress you have to get used to it." I felt like I was being gaslit and made sure to bring a friend to my final appointment to make sure the dress was perfect and that I wouldn't be bullied into a dress i felt uncomfortable in. The dress ended up looking and feeling good, but on the actual wedding day when tying my bustle the straps broke, which meant the train had to stay long. Ended up needing to change into a different dress (not a planned second look) because I couldn't dance with the bustle breaking. Overall would not recommend based on bedside manner and quality of alterations. read more

She made the week leading up to my wedding so unnecessarily stressful and almost ruined my dress for my wedding day (thankfully It was saved by an emergency appointment with a different seamstress two days before my Wedding) I'm truly shocked that Selene somehow has rave reviews, if you look at yelp and look at the 1 and 2 star reviews, you will see some similar experiences. My wedding was June 27th. She had my dress since April 30th initially she scheduled me for two alterations and then the pick up on June 21st final fitting was supposed to be May 30th. Everything seemed to be going fine until on May 30th the dress seemed to fit well overall just needed a few final touches near the chest (turns out It fit because It was still pinned, I didn't notice initially, I had to go back to pictures and realized this after the fact) because she said on the 30th It needed some more alterations to get the chest area right, she scheduled me for a 3rd final fitting on June 13th. When I'm walking out my door to go to her on June 13th, she calls to tell me she needs to leave as she has a medical Emergency, okay feel better I say, call Me next week to reschedule. When I don't hear from her by Wednesday the 18th, I call her and she says "I'm dealing with this medical issue right now what do you need is there a deadline?" Wild question to ask given the fact that she should have down that my wedding was the following week.. I politely remind her that my wedding is the 27th and I was leaving the 26th so I really needed It by this weekend. She agreed to see me earlier on in the day on the 21st this was I can pick It up that evening if any additional alterations are needed (by the way I later found out that her medical emergency was that she got two teeth pulled as per her report on the next fitting day) Okay this is where things really get out of control. I go in on the 21st and I am SWIMMING in my dress (this is when I didn't realize until after the fact that this is because the last fitting I had on the 30th the dress only fit because It was pinned AKA she did 0 work) she goes "OH MY GOD you lost so much weight WOW what have you been doing you lost several dress sizes, I need to do more alterations, this is too much work to do in a day, I'll work with you but you have to work with me you have to come back to pick up Monday night" I left scratching my head, I really did not think I lost weight at all let alone 2-3 dress sizes in two weeks but she had me convinced that my hot yoga I've been doing made my dress no longer fit, until my friend and I examined the pic from the last fitting. Once I realized she just straight up lied because she didn't do work and instead used my weight as an excuse, I started panicking. My MOH agreed to go with me Monday, we had a game plan.. go in, really hope the dress is done do my Fitting wait until dress is in bag in hand and then call her out. But then It didn't fit. Yes the alterations on the side were finally done but the chest area remained very loose. I think it's important to add, I'm a C cup, very average breast size there's really no reason to have trouble with this if you're a professional seamstress. Anyway, she says to me "yup like I've said since the beginning, this dress still won't fit your chest right, I will have to add straps, it's very normal, tons of brides do It " mind you, this is now 4 days before my wedding and no she never once mentioned straps to me until this appointment. I said absolutely not, you're not touching my dress another second. She responds "well I know weddings can be stressful but I have mentioned straps since the very beginning (she didn't) and it's not my fault you lost all this weight" that's when I decided to call her out on knowing she was lying then she started screaming at me in her shop like truly screaming at a bride 4 days before her wedding when she messed up this brides wedding dress.. It was a nightmare. Her mom comes out from the back room and assures me she can fix It in under an hour and I can watch. My MOH and I sit there awkwardly as her mom stitches the breast area a little more and makes It a little better It was doable I guess with like fabric tape if I wore It as is. Selene comes back after her mom fixes It to do the 'final fitting' and to show my MOH the terrible bustle she did. During this time she tells me.. don't walk backwards you will trip. Selene at the end goes "you made me nervous before can we hug It out?" It was truly the weirdest situation I honestly just wanted to get out of there so I just Said OK and played nice at the end, I wanted to remove myself from any more conflict and stress. She didn't charge me the final payment due to "misunderstandings" according to her, but her deposit was half so I still paid her $390 and I'm pissed about It. read more

Absolute sweetheart! Had a great deal of a bridal dress in which I was basically swimming, the smallest size was still too large... she made it look far more suited to me and my frame, all for a very reasonable price given the area. My review is super positive and I loved my experience at Selene's. The service and professionalism was fantastic. I called to get a price quote in late September for my destination wedding on November 30th. I was asked to come in first with the dress and was accommodated for an appointment a day or two later. Totally reasonable policy and very quick scheduling. When I arrived, it seemed like Vicki was waiting for me to arrive so I felt the attention was there. My dress is a size 12, but needed to be taken in around the chest, waist, and bustled. Vicki very kindly suggested that maybe the straps be shortened and the area around my hips be let out to ensure it was perfect (she also agreed to check first if there was any material to let it out). I agreed to it. Again, her suggestions and price seemed totally reasonable. She didn't push me and was really kind the whole time. Honestly, I think the price would have been similar anywhere else, I just really liked her energy and the fact that she and I were on the same page. At my first appointment, we scheduled two more fittings plus the pick up date within the next six weeks. She expressed wanting to have the dress ready at least ten days before I traveled just in case. I hadn't even thought about the timing so I liked that she made this suggestion and it made me feel way more at ease. The second appointment (first fitting) went well. She made minor changes and asked that I examine the dress closely. Then she proceeded to explain what her next steps were going to be. Again, I appreciated her transparency and calmness. The third appointment (second fitting) was probably the one with the most change and I really liked how it was coming together. The alterations around the chest where perfect (there was plenty to take in from the sides), as where the hips, and length. She immediately noticed the straps needed more and she got to pinning. She asked how I felt about the additional alterations and I agreed. For my final appointment and pick up I brought my mother in law. Vicki encouraged me to bring someone and I'm glad I did. It was super special to share that moment with her. Vicki had me walk, dance, wave, sit, stand, (all of the things), with my dress on to ensure it was perfect. Again, the level of transparency and experience was evident. I felt like she was using any and all scenarios to help me which I thought was super kind. I had a wonderful experience at Seline's. Everything was exactly as Vicki laid out for us. I highly recommend Selene Alterations to any Manhattan bride! The owner, Vicky, is such a sweetie and is so talented. She turned my extremely ill-fitted off-the-rack dress into a bridal gown that looked entirely made for me. Selene was only the second place I went in for an initial consultation and I instantly knew it was the better choice. Vicky gives a fair price and doesn't try to rack up the cost by itemizing unnecessary areas of alterations. She was also super communicative with her plan of attack and made sure the dress still felt comfortable for me with every proposed change during our initial consultation and two follow-up fittings. In response to an earlier review - when Vicky first hemmed the bottom of my dress, she also lightly stitched the length 2 inches shorter than necessary. I can't say enough good things about working with Selene. I first discovered her about 7 years ago when I bought a few dresses on sale that were gorgeous, but they didn't fit properly. I knew I wanted to invest in some decent tailoring since the dresses were still expensive so came to Selene based off of some good yelp reviews- and I wasn't disappointed. She made alterations to these dresses and made them fit PERFECTLY and they're still the best fitting dresses in my closet to this day. Many years down the line, when I finally found my wedding dress, I turned down the option of getting it tailored by the shop I purchased it at and came right to Selene. Despite the fact that I've been in the fashion industry for the past 10 years, I didn't recognize that the dress I had picked out for myself was far too long for my 5'2 silhouette, and no tailoring could fix this- or so I thought. Selene worked tirelessly and must have fitted me 4 times, completely taking apart my dress and reconstructing it until it fit like a glove. I can't even tell you how ill-fitting it was and only wish I had a before picture to prove the amount of love and labor that went into this tailoring. The fabric was so sensitive and even the train made it pull in awkward areas and sag in others. But she figured out how to make it work! Attached is a side profile of my dress, which had a ton of crazy details, and somehow Selene made it fit perfectly. Also, for those of you complaining about the price- Selene quoted me HALF of what the bridal shop did for their tailoring. Selene saw it, quoted me a fair price and assured me she would make it fit perfectly! She restructured the entire bodice of my dress, due to my scoliosis, and made it fit like a glove! Selene absolutely saved my wedding day. I got my dress altered with another store initially and the seamstress gave up on getting it to fit me. The dress was a low back, strapless Pronovias. I came to Selene in tears, one week before leaving for our wedding. She was honest about the amount of work it would take, and although it was hard for me to get over the price initially, it was totally worth it. Selene basically had to restructure the entire top of the dress... a couple of times. She was very diligent about making sure the dress fit me, hence the multiple fittings. It's very obvious that Selene really cares about her work and her clients! I had so little hope about the dress fitting me, and I was beyond impressed at my last fitting; I finally felt excited about walking down the aisle in my dress. Only two minor things happened on the big day that I think could have been prevented, hence the 4 stars. The added in straps loosened up and kept sliding off my shoulders the whole day, and two of the bustle buttons broke off about 30 minutes into the reception. Selene is amazing. BRIDES BEWARE: Avoid this place at all costs. Selene is constantly rushed and often double books appointments leaving not enough time to be accurate in her pinning or consultation leading to disastrous results. My first consolation I put the dress on. She hardly put 4 pins in the front before saying "$800 you pay half now, now when you pick up". After dropping off my dress I came back 2 weeks later and she had taken my wedding dress in to be 2 sizes to small. When I started looking panicked and having little 'single tear' moment (because I was literally standing in my worst nightmare - a dress too small 6 weeks before my wedding) she started going off at me asking "Why I was being emotional - she's human - humans make mistakes - they can fix it! If you're going to get this upset over the first fitting" She asked me if I could come back the next day however I had already made arrangements to leave work early for THIS appointment and I wasn't going to get away with that 2 days in a row. So I waited while her and her mother INSISTED that it was fixable and they "didn't cut the fabric" (LIES. She will write back to this and say she's telling the truth - she isn't. As she insisted "I didn't do anything wrong" - apart from ruin my entire dress... cheers.) Once they "let the fabric back out" I put the dress back on. My dress was originally a 12 and it was now tighter than the sample size 10 I had tried a month earlier. Again I started to get upset about how tight my dress now was that Selens MOTHER came out from the back and started yelling at me insisting she "Hadn't cut the fabric" (she had). That was the final straw for me. I at that point had paid $400 of the $800 I was being expected to pay to alter the dress and I was being yelled at by the store owner and her grumpy mother. Nope. This is NYC. I'll take my money elsewhere other than be treated by someone who is so scattered and rushed she doesn't know what she's doing - and quite frankly. Doesn't seem to care. Selene does NOT take enough time to consider each alteration for the person wearing it and yet charges an ultimate premium price like she's is a boutique (she isn't) - OH and she'll yell at you if you dare get upset that she's ruined your wedding dress 6 weeks before your wedding. I could write a novel on how much I love Selene!!! I have to preface my review by sharing that I am the most annoying and picky bride. Finding my dress alone took 20+ shopping trips and one of my BM's had to yell at me to hurry and choose my dress. And one raved about Selene and she looked perfect on her wedding day so I paid her a visit. 1. Her price was VERY reasonable! I went to a few other places that were NOT nice and they quoted a couple/few hundred more than Selene. 2. Selene's demeanor alone made me feel incredibly special and cared for. I did not get this vibe from any of the other alterations places I went to. She listened to any of my concerns and ideas and had PERFECT solutions for all of them. I truly felt like a special bride at every appointment. 3. She will make your boobs look great! My friend recommended her and mentioned this. I'm small chested and needed a lot of help in that department and Selene came through! 4. The quality. My dress was a couple sizes too big and it was a bit complex with many layers of lace and tulle and a unique back. After researching my options, I decided to go with Selene based on her stellar reviews across multiple platforms. And it was truly one of the best wedding decisions I had made. Initially, I thought I primarily needed hemming and cups added to the dress since it was pretty sheer and way too long on me. But Selene took my dress in in places that I didn't even realize needed it, and those alterations made such a huge difference. My dress looked like it was made for me. LOVE! I know what a nervous process it could be to hand your $$$ wedding dress to a seamstress and trust her 100% ! I was scared too... but my gut instinct and the very fair price led me to trust Selene and her amazing work! My dress was a size 10, I was a size 10 on the hip and size 6 on the top when I got this dress, I think with some weight loss it ended up being around size 6 in the end. The top needed alot of work because it was off the shoulder so if it isn't tight enough it will slide down and I was very nervous for that, but not once did I feel like it was sliding down or in an uncomfortable situation with the dress. I didn't have any nightmare issues with the dress or scheduling or anything in that vein. Selene communicated everything and there was no hidden charges or fine print. I would give Selene 100 stars if i could! She did the most beautiful job, and was fantastic every step of the way. I brought my moms old wedding dress with the big huge 80s puffy sleeves in. I was pretty nervous because even though my moms dress looked great It was hard to have the vision of what it's actually going to look like. To be honest, I was semi regretting telling my mom I would wear her dress. BOY I WAS WRONG!!!! Selene meticulously altered the sleeves into the cutest cut ever. Selene Alternations completed alterations on my Liz Martinez bridal gown. The dress design had intricate beading / fabric gathering, and Selene did an amazing job. My dress was ordered a few sizes large, and by the final fitting it fit perfectly. I felt beautiful (and comfortable) thanks to the detailed work. Additionally, she was very supportive and understanding, even though I was extremely anxious throughout the process. Example - I wrote down the wrong date for an appointment and showed up a week early, right after she had closed for the night. I had no expectations that it would look as good as it did in the photo when it shipped from China, I'd budgeted in extensive alterations (I work in fashion and have a background in design so I knew what I was in for) I loved the basic structure and knew it could become something special in the right hands. A good friend who has brought many formal dresses to Selene enthusiastically recommended her. We hit it off on Day 1 - I was 100% confident she would turn the dress into something I was happy with. Selene, Selene, Selene. What would I do without you? My sister got her dress altered by Selene last year for her destination wedding, and she couldn't stop singing her praises. I remember my sister's dress looked great and I asked her where she got it altered and she recommended Selene; this was last April. Lo and behold (and quite out of the blue) I got engaged in August, and one of the first things I bought was my dress. The place where I got my dress actually had pretty bad reviews regarding their alterations department, so without wanting to take that chance I called Selene right up. From the very beginning she was so sweet and accommodating, and I was confident that I was in good hands each time I went for a fitting. Selene knew exactly where my dress needed some work, and always did everything with a smile on her face. Selene pulled out all the stops for my wedding dress. I had a strapless rue de seine gown that I was in love with. Unfortunately I had lost so much weight since buying the dress that it barely stayed up. Selene tried everything to get it to work. After multiple fittings we finally decided that it needed to have straps. I was honestly devastated because I had had such a vision of what the dress would be for over a year and to change it was a huge bummer. I couldn't believe when I got the dress at the final pick up and how perfect it was. I now had a customized dress that fit perfectly and was absolutely gorgeous. Selene is such a sweet, lovely lady and I only have good things to say about her. She was my fairy godmother and did such an amazing job on making my wedding dress fit perfectly. When I did my final fitting, my dress fit like a glove and I had her add on off shoulder sleeves and they were exactly how I wanted. Selene and Georgia made my already dream wedding dress better than I could have imagined. My dress had an all over beaded bodice with a flowy sheath bottom half. I would give 6 stars if I could! I had the most amazing experience at Selene's! I went in with a request to help alter a vintage dress (straps needed to be adjusted and the dress needed to be taken out a bit). Selene made it wearable! It was such a process adjusting it as it was fragile and there wasn't much room to have it taken out, but Selene made it work. She was so incredibly patient - I had to go in maybe four times to try it on and she would go back and make alterations to help it fit perfectly.
