Needless to say, getting a haircut at a barber is completely different from a salon! I like paying less than $20 for a haircut and am always amazed at how fast they are. The lack of frills at a barber shop like Selwyn's is comical. They move so fast sometimes I can't tell if they're cutting hair or chopping wood! But the best thing about barbers is that when your usual salons are fully booked for a month you can just walk in and immediately get a haircut. Especially for men, if you communicate what you want up front I'd wager you'll get as good a haircut as any salon. I've been here several times and I really like Jodi. This is literally the worst haircut experience I've received in my entire life. I feel like my $25 was not only wasted but used to negatively affect my appearance. I've actually just created this Yelp account for the sole purpose of warning others about this barbershop. 1: NOT ON TIME After booking an appointment via phone, I arrived 5 minutes prior to the appointment time. I then waited for almost 30 minutes before being seated. 2: LAZY The man that cut my hair was easily 80+ years old. This would not be a problem if didn't affect his ability to complete the job (unfortunately, it did). He never once stood up out of his rolling office chair. How can you cut hair on the top of my head if you can't even see it? 3: NO SCISSORS Perhaps this should just be an addendum to the LAZY comment. But the barber attempted to complete this "haircut" with nothing but an electric trimmer. Once I realized that he intended to do everything with the electric trimmer, I asked him to please use scissors on the top and front. He groaned and grabbed some scissors. I had to ask again for him to actually use water with the scissors. 4: WON'T FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS I specifically asked him (several times) to leave the front longer. After leaving this barber, the hair in front is actually shorter than the hair on the top of my head. It looks rather bizarre. 5: TIPPED HIMSELF This shop utilizes those credit card readers that are linked up to iPads. The type where they spin it around and you can select a tip amount before signing your name. You know what I'm talking about. This 'barber' generously selected the "20% tip" option before allowing me to sign my receipt. I was stunned. In fairness to the other employees, I only experienced the atrocious service of one old man named Reece. At the time of my appointment, there were 3 people working including Reece. Assuming the other 2 employees aren't horrible at their jobs, you'd have a 67% chance of getting a decent trim at this joint. 33% chance you leave looking like mangled roadkill. I've been looking for a place to get my hair cut in Charlotte that I would like for months now. I think I've found the one. I tried them all from the fancy places that charge $50 for a cut to ones scraping the profit margins at $12. I am super tolerant about what happens with my hair, you can totally butcher it and I'll be mildly upset and get over it. What I think people look for is a healthy balance of affordability with skill and personality. Cause lets face it no one wants to sit there and deal with someone they don't like for 30 minutes to an hour even if the haircut is good. Tim treated me like an old regular when I walked through the door and gave me a great cut to boot. This is really a no frills sort of establishment so don't expect a hand massage or anything. I am a salon girl but my stylist has always said that barbers are the best trained in their craft. I took my four year old daughter here one afternoon after she insisted for hours that she wanted a haircut. She went in with a hairstyle I would lovingly call 'bird's nest' and came out with an adorable and well done bob. She did not mind the no-frills atmosphere. There was a local anchorman and an elderly gentleman getting their hair did, too. Old-school barber with friendly service at a great price... ($15 without tip) and a dumdum lollipop? Graduate from "Cheap Clips" and "ESPN Clips" and check this place out. It's not far from the intersection of Woodlawn and Selwyn, and right next to the Selwyn Pub. Guys, go see Reece. He just moved to Selwyn Barber & Style from his old shop, Sedgefield Barber, on South Blvd - where he worked for 44 years before developers pushed him out last fall. It's great that he found such a good place to keep doing business. Now, Reece is old school, no doubt about it. There are a few generations between he and I. But let me tell you he knows what he is doing. He is a gentleman and he will help you look like one too, and quickly at that. I have been to a few places in Charlotte and have paid a lot of money for mediocre haircuts, but Reece is now my go-to. I am pretty particular about my hair and I will not be going anywhere else. I was a little nervous at first, but Reece is AWESOME. Go see him. He takes walk-ins, but calling ahead will save you some time. $21 cut, $1 off if you pay in cash or check (and don't forget to tip). read more

Laura Ford is AMAZING! It's very obvious that she loves what she does and is very talented! Going to a new stylist is always makes me nervous. I've gone to stylists who were highly recommended and come out anywhere from very disappointed to OMG, what am I going to do with this???? Not that way with Laura at all. Even thought there is a large sign in the front window that says "walk-ins welcome" the two men there acted like they were doing me a favor because I didn't have an appointment ,even though they only had one customer and no one waiting. The guy who cut my hair was so old he couldn't even stand up and worked sitting in a chair. I told him to leave the front long, but he started cutting it shorter and when I mentioned that I wanted it longer in front than the back, he just kept going. Then after the bad haircut, he had the nerve to try to sell me some shampoo. This was the first and only time I will ever go to this barber shop. read more

May be one of the worst hit cuts I have ever had. Can't speak for all of the barbers in this place but Reece did a horrible job. He has to be in his late 80s, cut my hair sitting down the entire time, and rushed to leave when it was closing time. He should retire. Safe to say I will not be back. I rarely see reviews from women on barber pages, so I was apprehensive about going to a barber. I am sick of paying $60+ to maintain my pixie, so my boyfriend suggested Selwyn Barber. It was perfect for my needs. You're not going to get that salon experience and frankly, that wasn't what I was looking for. I like this place, I've gotten a haircut with several people there and it's always good. The price is not the lowest around but not expensive by any means at $21 + tip. It's usually better to call ahead of time but you might get to just walk-in sometimes, just don't get mad if they are all booked and they can't help you right then and there! read more
