The Paynes Creek Wetlands are also in this area, which brings a variety of migratory birds. The trails are also dog-friendly and mixed use - I've seen both equestrians and mountainbikers - but very lightly trafficked. Signage is light so I recommend having a map handy. I come here in particular for backpacking. The Yana Trail to Massacre Flat is an enjoyable seasonal hike, and the ability to camp overlooking the river is just plain awesome.

We got to interact up close with the wild horses and loved it. Yes, as some have commented the horses you see on this aren't truly wild. (they have a wild side with the real wild horses) but these horses you interact with live just about as close to wild as you will get. As much as a horse lover as I am, I really didn't know much about the situation with the Wild Horses and the BLM. Our trail guide (I wish I could remember her name, blonde super bubbly super sweet!) started in with a tour of the ranch and history of the founder Dayton and how he came to establish the sanctuary. The views are spectacular especially the lookout over the Cheyenne River. We learned that that particular spot was very important to the Native Americans as the river runs east west north and south in that location. There are carvings made by the Native Americans that are so interesting to see on the tour as well! The horses are so well cared for and we loved seeing the interaction between the groups. We had horses right in the windows of the SUV. Even my non-horse crazy fiancé had a great time. The bets part of the whole tour had to be seeing our guide and hearing about Dayton and his assistant Susan and everyone else on the ranch. To be witness to a group of people with such passion and truly selflessly helping these horses was an amazing energy to be around. For an authentic tour of the Black Hills and to help our a great cause, don't miss this while in the Black Hills!

It's a short drive from Redding, Red Bluff, even Chico. There's a comfortable visitors' center, interesting guided tours, and of course, 5000 acres of wildland where contented horses, burros and donkeys live. These are rescue animals which would have been killed because they were no longer wanted. This is an environmentally sound, ethical non-profit organization that is good for horses, good for the planet, and good for visitors. You might even see a cute baby horse or two! Call ahead due to covid, etc.

Over the last few years Bob would greet you in the parking lot, but this year we had Keith. I cannot say enough good things about Keith! The experience really starts in that parking lot. After hours on the road and screaming grumpy kids dying to get on the water, I cannot say how helpful it is to have a marina that has a guy stationed whose whole job is to greet you, call down to let the office know you've arrived, arrange the carts to come pick everything you've brought down to your houseboat and then gives you a ride down. All while having a great attitude and helping any and everywhere he can. Big shoot out to Keith! Then come in the carts with the most helpful boys you've ever met. They load all of your gear (doesn't matter how many trips, they get it done) then they help unload everything onto the boat. The office staff is amazing, Paula and Carrie are the sweetest most helpful ladies you've ever met. They give the whole check-in process a personal touch that makes you kinda sad when you have to leave them and go get back to your family lol Ryan was awesome too! The whole trip was amazing, best one in all 15 years we've been out on Shasta! Their houseboats are perfect, their staff is the most hospitable you'll find on any lake in the great state of California. They go above and beyond! Another shoutout to all the boys serving and orientating and getting boats set up. They work hard with a giant smile on their face. The entire staff puts you in lake mode! I think any bad reviews you're gonna see on here are inexperienced boaters that didn't take the time to ask the questions or take into account their limits. These guys are so helpful and walk you through everything and then some. My grandmother drove our houseboat and we had all the teens out there staking it, it was that damn simple. Thank you to everyone at Jones Valley! The best marina in all of Lake Shasta!!

Went on a five day trip this past weekend on a Mirage houseboat. Had a packed house of 14 people…read more What we loved about the boat was that we all had private quarters. It was 111 degrees when we arrived, the heat slowly dissipated as the days wore on, but the AC kept us cool, even in the two loft bedrooms. The only mechanical issue we encountered was the lake water pressure, but the techs easily fixed it. The marina store had snack items (mainly ice cream treats for us) at fair prices. Our boat was fully equipped with an array of cookware and entertaining pieces, Pottery Barn dishes and quality kitchen gadgets-- even a Pampered Chef garlic press. Our hot tub was clean and fully functional. The staff was professional- Every one of them that we interacted with. I highly recommend this company!

We arrived 20 minutes late but she was so professional - she shortened and made the check in process so easy. There was a cabin with fire where you can change since Deer Mountain was quite cold and was snowing that day desolate the snow drought. She was mega attentive and taught us everything and told us exactly where we were going. She took couple of pictures for us and explained what we'll see had it not been so foggy. On the way back when we stopped at a viewpoint my boyfriend accidentally accelerated and we toppled right where the cliff started - Michele rushed over and helped us up and we genuinely concerned for our well being. We're so grateful she was our guide and can't recommend her enough. She's an amazing person with a beautiful smile and we definitely suggest everyone go snowmobile with her, especially first timers!
