I was visiting my daughter and her family who live in Livermore (I live in Minnesota) and wanted to introduce my 16 year old grandson to trout fishing with a fly. This type of fishing isn't available near Livermore but I was aware of the fishery around Redding and was also aware of the Fly Shop because of their worldwide fly fishing travel services. I called and easily booked a guide for a one day float trip on the Sacramento River. We drove up from Livermore and spent the night in Redding and showed up at the Fly Shop the next morning to meet our guide Shane. Although I own enough fly fishing gear myself to stock a small store I didn't want to lug it all on the plane but Shane provided all the gear we needed - rods, reels, flies etc. I asked Shane to focus on my grandson and he was a big help in upgrading my grandson's skills. He hooked numerous rainbow trout and landed a few which were carefully handled and released by Shane. When I went into the store, I went in with the thought that you knew what you were selling and we're well informed, but that was not the case and if you go back to the video you speak about, how many times did the sales person that was with me tell me this is not my field and I don't know that much about it. He said that numerous times with the other person behind the counter that wasn't doing anything,hearing this, but saying nothing throughout the whole process. And after $300, it turns out the lenses are not correct for what I need. They're good glasses, but they don't work properly for my usage. At no point through this did that sales person or the person behind the counter say ,wait , let me find somebody in the store that does know about these glasses to help make an informed decision.What it felt like from this store was , pick something out, pay us and get out. The Fly Shop is several different things in one: a fly shop, a guide service, a travel service, a rental agent for premium properties/ranches, and a host of courses and hosted trips. Overall, it's a great establishment and conveniently located right off I5 (exit at Churn Creek). I've taken classes with them, bought gear there and via their online store, spent many weeks in Bollibokka, and done a handful of guided trips. Overall, they are great, professional, stuff works, and the guides and reliably fun, adapatable (to anglers of different levels) and heck the Lower Sac is a dream fishery for a day float. Particular props to Shane who took us out yesterday. He was highly knowledgeable, fun, professional, and adapted well to one novice and one veteran angler -- with some great casting lessons thrown in during a few stops. Probably the best guide I've had on the Lower Sac and one of the best in Northern California. Only beef: their fishing reports white board in the shop is pretty reliable, but the online reports get updated much less frequently -- suggest just putting a webcam on the white board and all will be perfect. read more

I have the opportunity to fish only once or twice a year; so, when I do, I want to get the most out of my time. The Fly Shop guide services are world class and, well worth the money. Their staff have consistently demonstrated to be highly experienced anglers, professional and, most importantly, they know the waters they fish in the area better than anyone. Whether it is trout on the Lower Sac, or Steelhead on the Trinity, you are sure to get someone who knows how to put you into where the fish are with the right tackle and riggings. I was most recently fishing with Ross on the Trinity for Steelhead. He grew up fishing the waters around Redding and proved to know the Trinity like it was his backyard. Most importantly, he made the day productive for me with a huge Buck Steelhead among others. Sure, you can take pride in figuring all of this out yourself, and wading the river trying to find the right holes, the right tackle and the right flies; but, if your time is important to you, and you have only a small amount of it and you want to catch fish, I highly recommend the guide services at the Fly Shop. Anytime I visit northern California for my fishing trips, I stop by this shop. The shop itself is bigger than most fly shops with a full selection of fishing merchandise any fisherman would need/want. Their selection and quality of flies is some of the best I have seen. The fly prices are fair to moderately priced. The cool thing about this place is not just the merchandise offered on the floor. It is the knowledge that most of the guys working the shop have. Lower Sac all day float: Awesome. Had an incredible guide and landed over 30 rainbows, most of which were solid fish with one landed nearing 23". If you find your way up north to go steelhead fishing on the Trinity, Klamath, or maybe just drifting the Sac. out of Redding the FlyShop is an absolute must stop. Knowledgeable staff, the biggest selection of. Fly fishing gear I have encountered anywhere, inclusive of Montana. This one company situated in Northern California in my opinion shaped and changed the industry! I was treated very unprofessionally by one of the guides for The Fly Shop while fishing on the Lower Sac. He seemed to be trying to impress his clients (I was in a different boat) by telling me that I was interfering with "his" run. I told him very emphatically that I disagreed. He made some other inappropriate remarks that I will share with Brian Quick because they involved another client. I have used many FlyShop guides over the last 30 years who were all courteous and professional (including Ernie and Lonnie Boles). The Fly Shop rated the fishing on Hat Creek as GREAT before and after my guided trip through them. However, hatches were sparse and rises of small fish were sporadic at best. Larger fish don't play during weak hatches. I caught one fish on my own the day before the guided trip and no fish with the guide. If this is what The Fly Shop considers great fishing I would recommend disregarding their fishing reports and not hiring their guides!!! read more

These guys are literally the "one stop shop" for everything you need to fish in the Northern California/Sacramento River area. They hooked me with up license, steelhead card, equipment, and -- best of all -- a local guide, Steve, who literally made my day out on the river the best possible scenario (I had never fished the Sacramento previously). Born and raised in the area, Steve has more than 3000 hours on the River and knew every riffle, every buried stump, every fishable pocket of the Sacramento. We caught different species of trout, a few suckerfish, and (best of all) some winter-run steelhead under his guidance (his fellow guide/friend even brought in a salmon). Job well done! From the first conversation I had with my Uncle (a lifetime fly fisherman), the Fly Shop was known as the place to go. From superior help in store, to the abundance of knowledge known throughout the shop. You know coming here, you will be treated very well and always leave with a smile on your face knowing you have purchased the best of the best from the best of the best. My first time in, I rode my motorcycle 4 hours to get to the shop simply to pick out a hat. It was a fast visit as I had work later that afternoon. On the way home during my grueling 4 hour journey down i-5 at some point the hat flew out of my bag. This was a mess up on my part, but the Fly Shop still took care of me and secured all of my fly fishing purchases for life! I really wish other businesses I have gone to would set them selves to the standards they have over here in Redding. Knowing that even if the customer is at fault, helping them even a little bit would secure more business over the years than the possible few bucks lost helping them out. Once again I will say This place is the best around and knows how to help, take care of customers, and make sure your life in fly fishing is the best it can be! This prompted my cousin and I to stop by at the beginning of our fishing trip and spend a little time and money getting fitted for waders and getting a new reel. In that time the staff was super nice and pulled out as many waders as needed and spent the time to make sure they were right. It's amazing how much cash I can spend on some thread and elk hair tied to tiny little hooks. If i add it all up, it would be way cheaper for me to go to the market and buy fresh fish every week. But standing in the middle of a rushing river with snow-capped mountains looming around, waving a stick in the air is basically priceless. The Fly Shop, right off the I-5, is probably as valuable for their wealth of knowledge as well as for their selection of fly fishing gear. Upon request, the shop staff will pull out the best bugs/flies for that day, for whichever part of the river you want to fish, and draw you diagrams of tackle set ups, and mark the best spots on photocopied maps they hand out for free. John and Jeremiah have been particularly helpful for me. The flies are a good value, well made, and tailored for the local rivers. Some of the other gear can get pricey and so I may turn to Sports Authority or e-tailers for some items, but some gear is priced just right. They also have complete rod/reel set ups that my friends have bought and loved. Their website is also very helpful and has an online catalog of gear as well as stream reports that are updated about every other week. But I often call them for stream updates. Oh, and I also won a pair of $200 oakley's here once just for signing up for their catalog! read more

These guys stand behind their products!!! Been a patron for a few decades. Bought LOTS of gear here over the years. Recently bought a pair of TFS waders. The following year they chose to discontinue them since their supplier was no longer living up to the high standards of TFS. My waders started leaking through the seams the following summer at the crotch, both legs and both feet. They totally stood behind their product and offered full credit. I have been to fly shops all over the country and this shop has just about everything you could ever need, has some exclusive stuff, and can get you anything else you may need. For almost 15 years I have been stopping into the fly shop on my way up to some of my favorite fishing places in Northern California. For years, it was an enjoyable respite - an hour or so picking up flies, checking out cool new gear, chatting up the staff, browsing the books or tying stuff, and overall basking in the retail enjoyment of my life's biggest passion. Sadly, over the past 2 years I've experienced some of the newer staff having belligerent, arrogant and downright confrontational attitudes....in a fly fishing shop! C'mon Mike - is that the staff you want representing the shop you worked so hard to build? Unfortunately (and with a heavy heart) I won't be shopping here anymore. Here is why this place is awesome. I ordered one of their combo rods online. They called and said the rod was backordered, but I could get the reel and line with a different rod. It cost a bit more, but I bought a Sage Foundation. It came in the mail. I put it together, ran the line through, put on a leader and went to secure the line on the reel. With just a slight amount of pressure the rod snapped right below the top ferrule. Had to be a defect, since the amount of pressure was so light. But I was kind of freaking out with a 10 day trip to SW Montana next week. I called the shop, and they said they would call me back the next day when Eric was in. I called back the next day and Eric had already arranged for a new rod to be shipped out, and just asked me to send the first one back. That is customer service and that is why I buy about 90% of my gear from these guys. read more

They even have maps you can take with you if you plan on fishing near redding area! The map sure helped when the bf wanted to locate specific section on the hot creek. overall, nice selection and great customer service! Though the prices are a little steep it is an amazing shop. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and very helpful. You can pretty much find anything you could ever need for fly fishing. They even have classes/workshops that show you how to tie your own flies and how to fly fish in general. The Fly Shop is located right off of I-5 so it is easy to find it. Another nice thing is that they offer guide services so you can fish with the pros. They will tell you the best spots to fish, the hot spots, weather, what kind of fly to use, and anything else you might want to know about a certain fishing spot anywhere in Northern California. read more
