I am a returning member (about 10 years) and I love the improvements to the facility! The classes are soooo great, welcoming, inspiring, and work you out!!! Exactly what I was looking for. I have been putting my youngest in the kids classes and (childcare) playhouse while I do classes and workout. Tonight I tried the Yoga Flow with Jamie and all I can say is THANK YOU!!! I appreciate your class; I'm so stoked for the future classes! The pools are awesome, and I'm really enjoying the kids spa being separate from the adult spa~ Genius!!! They have good smoothies, as well as a good selection of wine and beer. The only suggestion I would make is to have a small deli (that also offers vegan options). Maybe offer sammys, salads, and wraps? I've been recommending people try them out for a week to see for themselves. read more

Tried to play their pickleball night for the first time tonight. Signed up in the morning with the front desk. Showed up that night and paid my entry fee at front desk. AFTER I PAID I was told by the person running the event there wasn't room for me to play. Not helpful. Terrible attitude. I will not be back. Pretty annoyed with how this place works. I signed my daughter up for school PE requirement and didn't realize I would be sucked into a 2 year contract by doing so. The classes are great but the weight room is not for me, which is mainly what I use, and it's filled with high schoolers hogging the equipment sitting on their phones. Not stoked I'm having to pay hundreds of dollars for a gym I don't use. If the weight room was bigger and kids not piled up in there I'd love the gym... but nope not for me. read more

For one, my husband wasn't really told that there was gonna be a year commitment so we signed the form. generally it's month-to-month in gyms. I broke my arm and we were no longer able to go and they wouldn't give us any discount on trying to get out of the thing, we only had four months to go and to get out of the contract we had to pay $500 for four more months which is ridiculous, so please buyers beware when you think you're going to sign up for a nice little gym for a month it's not like that and when we try and get answers the manager couldn't give us answers because the guy that did the cancellations wasn't there. And to top it off you think you are going to a safe place of town but cars are constantly being broken into and management says it's not their responsibility because you signed a crappy waiver. I'm just trying to help at least one person from getting into the same horrible situation that we did. read more

Sun Oaks is truly a complete health and fitness club with tennis, swimming, group fitness workouts, activities for kids, personal training and more. My wife enjoys the fitness classes. As much as we pay for this place, it is just more and more disappointing. The childcare has odd hours, that never seem to coincide with when I am able to be here... and even then if you haven't made a reservation online (which isn't even on their app and not super convenient) sometimes they take off early and aren't even there for the hours they are supposed to be. They close the locker room in the middle of the day and won't let you in - again, happens to coincide with the one time I can come... plus their customer service is just mediocre. Nobody offers any help or recommendations, the staff treats you like an inconvenience if you ask them anything... I'm locked into a contract and don't know where we would go anyways... maybe that's why they can get away with being so subpar. read more

FAMILIES: DO NOT GO HERE! DO NOT SIGN UP YOUR KIDS!! Even 1 star is being too generous when it comes to the unprofessionalism of owner, Jeremiah Walsh. Imagine a grown man being over the top aggressive in trying to humiliate and threaten a 14 yr old boy he just met because the boy made a silly fart sound that wasn't even directed toward man. That is the toxic, rigid and quickly escalating behavior of Sun Oaks owner, Jeremiah Walsh. Several people were eyewitnesses to this interaction. Especially children!! Jeremiah went as far as to call this boy a punk in front of his friends and tell them to not hang out with him! Owner continued to threaten boy, telling him he was going to contact his school and tell his basketball coach to not let him on the team!! Jeremiah then aggressively pressed boy for his full name until boy broke down and then Jeremiah abruptly and cruelly CANCELED HIS MEMBERSHIP!! All for what?? Because boy was just being 14 but not harming anyone and then trying to stand up for himself and explain himself but Jeremiah kept shutting him down. When boy expressed feeling the owner was abusing his power the owner escalated even further. This gym was a huge part of this boy's life for most of his life. It's where he learned to swim with the rest of his siblings, where he made many friends and now as a growing teen really enjoyed developing his basketball skills with friends he ONLY got to see there. Health clubs like these are meant to encourage and cultivate healthy habits in our community's youth as well as create a good community connection. Instead this boy was traumatized by this abrupt cancellation to his membership by owner himself. According to other witnesses, owner acted as if this boy was running around the gym with a gun! They said he was actually even yelling, just having a completely over the top reaction to something so silly. I was told by various members in Sun Oaks community that this is an ongoing pattern with owner where he comes at people when his ego is slighted in any way. He made my friend's 5 year old cry many years ago and I continue to hear similar negative stories about this man. Matt Greg, the manager there said they usually sit down with teens and their parents if incidents occur and talk it out and most of the time allowed back in. Yet there was NEVER one attempt at doing that FIRST. Instead owner abruptly called boy's dad basically saying, "I don't want your kid here anymore" without much of an explanation as to why and then hung up. Like a dictator doing whatever he feels he wants to do because it's HIS gym. I noticed a google review from 4 years ago by a Conner that had 13 likes revealing a negative interaction with Jeremiah as well. I have never heard one positive thing about this owner. So many people complain about him. A business owner abusing his authority is just plain wrong! Especially with children! By the way, this is probably my first negative review online ever. Membership management was very unpleasant and bordered on what I would define as,"rude." Months later I am still paying for a gym membership I cannot use. What gives with this place? Online, their website, it states that from June 4th through July 27th there will be swim lessons June 4th to June 7th from 5:15 pm to 6:00 pm (Season 1), and 6:00 pm to 6:45 pm (Season 2) for $85.00, monthly. So I decide to head-on in while my wife and daughter are getting their haircut to kill time. So I go in to the front desk and ask if I can sign up my daughter for swim school. Sure no problem, we just have to wait for a computer to open up. Well that is weird. One would think that they would have more than one computer, but what do I know. So I wait for about 5 minutes, no big deal. Now the computer is open up, and she tells me swim school starts on Monday. Awesome, lets sign my daughter up. She says okay, do you want her to start at 9:00 am or 10:00 am? I said no, I would like to sign her up for the 5:15 pm class, she still has school. She then proceeded to tell me that there is no afternoon class, and my daughter really doesn't need to go to school the last week of school, because schools really don't do anything on the last week. Well, feeling a little pissed off, I told her that on Sun Oak's website, it clearly says that they have a class from June 4th to June 7th at 5:00 pm for $85.00, monthly. She said sorry, but that must have been a typo or something, because the class is in the morning and cost $100.00, monthly. So with that, I said goodbye. Be careful of Sun Oak's sales tactics, because they are shady. Guess they will say whatever they want online, just to get you in the door so they can up-sale you. I will probably try again next month during a weekday. But, I will have BBB on speed dial next time they pull this crap. read more

We did do a quick self-tour. The place is laid out kind of wonky. The atmosphere isn't great. The staff made us feel like we were an inconvenience. We left and decided to join another gym. To be fair, if we were avid tennis players, it may have been more appealing, as it looks like it's heavily toward the tennis community. But after reading some other reviews about how people are treated with membership and billing, we decided to walk. The other clubs we ended up visiting that day were more than happy to give us a FREE tour plus all the other clubs had all activities included in the price covered by United Healthcare where as Sun Oaks did not include the pool, tennis courts and who knows what else! I am very disappointed in this place. First off, I signed up thinking the place was amazing. I was so excited. After joining I noticed how many things were falling apart or were outdated. There are certain rooms that look like the roof is going to fall on your head eventually. A lot of equipment looks super old. The only nice things are the pool and the new fitness rooms. The classes are not that great either. The teachers don't teach you how to do the moves before you jump in and don't offer alternate versions of moves you cannot do (which is unsafe). Also, I had to put my membership on hold for a bit because I couldn't afford it and they started to charge me $10 a month while my membership was on hold. They did not tell me that there would be a fee while it was on hold when I initially signed up. And it is impossible to get out of this membership if you cannot afford it. Every time I tried to communicate with someone about my membership it was confusing and I didn't know who to speak to exactly. You'd be better off doing fitness videos on YouTube at home or getting a $10 membership at Planet Fitness. read more

This is absolutely miserable. The heat in the women's locker runs about 80 degrees. After pleading with everyone to please turn on the air, it never happened. Been going to sun oaks for about 6 months now; The class offerings are on point, most of them are mossa classes and kind of canned- same music and workout everytime however there are a solid 10 different options and lots of different times. That being said the RPM cycling classes with Nancy are the best I've ever taken- unfortunately the 'group' ride format ones are also the worst. Who wants to listen to the same knock off (bc they don't want to pay for the licence) and do the same workout everytime- this is ok in the POWER classes as they are weight based but still the music could be different. There's also an array of offerings that you can take in addition to the free classes such as boot camp and my absolute favorite TRIBE fit but these cost another $60-$100 per 6 weeks. It's absolutely worth it. Cardio room is frankly lame. Equipment is old, room is small and crowded there's no step mill or cybex arc trainers- planet fitness even has those... also no wifi which is ridiculously cheap of them in my opinion. There's a pretty rad Olympic style weightlifting room and a traditional weight room- the traditional one is old and tired. There's also a few other little nooks and crannies around the place like above the racquet ball court for floor exercises with a few little free weights which are nice options. Tennis seems awesome but I don't play, same with the pools. Locker rooms are clean and serve their purpose, sauna is awesome. Staff is all super friendly from the trainers to the front desk staff. They are always smiling and sweet. This gym is in my opinion the best in Redding but if they just put in a little more effort they could be perfect. read more

Sun Oaks' staff is what makes this gym stand out from the rest, particularly the personal trainers. Deborah had the insight to suggest working with a trainer in the quieter areas of the gym as a support for my sensory issues. Matt P has been my trainer and we targeted correcting my posture (which I previously suffered from lifelong migraines) and strength training. He has made my gym experience warm and very welcoming. I am continually impressed with how many aspects of excellence he brings with him to serve his clients. I couldn't imagine a better personal trainer. If you want a cold, sterile, uptight gym - there are lots of options. If you want a human-centered, warm, friend-like environment where your personal success is important to the staff - come to Sun Oaks. Other favorite points are the sauna, outdoor hot tub, and child care. read more

I like it that you can finish working off your calories and then share a cold beer or a glass of wine with a buddy out on the patio. I like that they have not one, but two pools to use. But pretty, pretty, please Sun Oaks owners, could you maybe invest in something bigger than hand towels to dry off with, buy some amenities (shampoo, soap, lotion) for the locker rooms, and how about a nice grown-ups only hot tub? I came here based on the positive Yelp reviews and I guess Yelp can get it wrong sometimes too. The weight room is really the worst. The equipment is old and not cared for well. As one poster put it, it smells like a dirty boys locker room. $10 for a visitor pass I'd spend my money elsewhere. The rest of the facilities are tired and old as well. I'm guessing they must have great classes, that's the only thing I can think of that would have the lot so full but I really don't know. Staff knows the names of their members and is always willing to spend time getting to know their needs. They do this not to increase sales by adding on my boutique accommodations. Additional seperate locker rooms for swimmers and others helps control the traffic and keeps the floors wet in areas where members will experience water on the floor. Also Family Shower and Changing Rooms are available throughout the Property so members can care for their needs and that of the kids. Their childcare includes full activity playground for the kids and young adults to enjoy their time. Along with seperate pools for recreation and training enables a more focused workout then standard combined pools. Offering indoor and outdoor courts for tennis. Sun Oaks is an amazing fitness club! My wife and I have been going for almost a year now, and we are so glad that we made the decision to join! They have extremely friendly and helpful staff, and as far as activities go, they have something for everyone. Indoor and outdoor tennis courts, basketball courts, swimming pools, and even a racquetball court! They have enough classes to keep someone occupied for years - and new classes all the time. They even host community events and barbecues! They serve everyone from families, to professional athletes, and everywhere in between. Some other reviewers have said that their equipment is old - but that's just not the case. My wife and I see new equipment coming in all the time. And to top it all off? If you've never seen the sunrise over the lawn surrounding the tennis courts - you don't know what you're missing. It is the absolute BEST way to start out the day! I just stared working out here when my family and I moved up to redding, I was used to the small gyms that are so compact and everyone there looks like a body builder.... this gym is great for kids and has plenty of room, and the classes are amazing. I used to like to just work out by myself, but the classes are so fun and the instructors are great. I especially like Kama... she's so full of energy! Everything is kept very clean considering how old the buildings are!! *And to the other reviewer who was treated like a suspect and left to the Y... when I signed up there I wasn't in the system yet and they were very accommodating and let me right in to work out and didn't ask any questions, So maybe they learned from your review! :) read more

Pretty great family fitness and rec center. Definitely a family place with a great, loving culture. We use the pool with the kids and it's very nicely maintained. They offer lots of those huff and puff hour-long classes timed to pop hits for no extra charge if that is your thing. I prefer strength or hypertrophy training with free weights mixed with high intensity interval training, and they have the weights for this as well. However, the main weight room is super crowded and narrow with minimal room to get a good WOD in. Luckily, they have a newer weight room with bumper plates but it's also very small so maxes out at about 4-5 people working out at once and they do not have very many kettle bells. Additionally, the new weight room is unavailable for use during the hours right after I get off work (approx 4 PM), and unavailable late Saturday morning--both prime workout times for me. Overall, if you like classes, swimming, and tennis this is the place for you! read more

If I could give a lower rating I would. The staff here are so unprofessional! I thought I would sign up for a physical trainer and the front desk said "Sure! We will set you up. Actually, being a newer member you get one free session!" So I met with a PT named Taylor. She was late and didn't have all the information needed. I am a nurse and so I work 3 12 hours shift that are not set days of the week. I told Taylor I could provide a schedule a month ahead of time and that I wanted a monthly subscription for 2 sessions a week. She said that would be fine but that I would be working with several different trainers since she "doesn't do weekends". She asked me when I wanted to start. It was Thursday that week so I told her let's start Monday of next week. She told me fine and that she would call me with the time and the name of the trainer. She was eager to charge me the hundreds of dollars it would cost for the subscription, but I share an account with my mother and I asked her to wait until I was officially scheduled to charge me. I also asked to pay upfront so my mother wasn't charged (it was my moms card on the account... and you can only have one card) but she told me no, that a card on file would have to be charged. So I told her her to wait to charge me. She never called with an appointment time. I even called Sun Oaks twice and no one replied to my phone call until Tuesday afternoon. Another trainer Mellisa talked to me and she was very helpful although stated that what Taylor had told me before wasn't true. In order to have a subscription, I would have to have schedule set days which would not work for my career. She said we would use parts of my sessions to schedule my session drop in times... which of course were priced higher than a subscription. I told her I wasn't comfortable paying for time to schedule sessions... she mentioned it didn't take long but that she was willing to schedule me at that time. After all her efforts... she was probably the nicest and most accommodating staff member I spoke with at Sun Oaks... I decided that trying to schedule her busy schedule my busy schedule ( I'm in the middle of escrow right now) was not a good idea at the moment. I told her to completely cancel the PT, thanked her for her time, and told her I would definitely be calling her at a later time- after we were done moving- for PT services. She gave me her personal contact and assured me that I would have the pleasure of working with her again. Two months go by... and Debbrah "director of PT" leaves a voicemail stating that my mom's card was charged for PT services but that my mom refuted the charge r/t she knew I hadn't received any services. I spoke to my mom about it. She told me she saw the charge on her credit card and canceled the charge not wanting it to go through. She went to Sun Oaks immediately after she found out and told them about it. She spoke with Matt... a PT manager. Now this guy... if you can get ahold of him... is super rude. Every time I have spoke with him he acts like I'm wasting his time and he has been very condescending. Apparently he told my mom "Well I wish you hadn't canceled that charge on your credit card because now that gonna cost me two hours of work." Wow! Well Matt, are you not getting paid for those 2 hours???? How rude! Then they went on to tell my mom that she would be charged 15 dollars for reversal of the charge! Of course I called them frustrated after hearing this. They should never have charged the account in the first place! I spoke to Bren behind the counter... I voiced my frustration in a professional manner although I did mention that the whole experience had been very unprofessional and that I felt their physical training department was disorganized. She told me there was nothing she could do but wait until Matt came back because he was "the decision maker". She would have him call me back. They never bothered to call me back. Instead they called my mother back. They told her they were going to cancel my membership. My poor mom. She just wants to work out. We are going to talk later about joining the YMCA. She said, "They said you used fowl language." Not one bad word had escaped my mouth once talking to these people! I called them back to get a confirmation. I spoke to Bren again. She was hilarious trying to come up with excuses for their gym. "Well Taylor is one of our best PTs... and we just don't like to hear criticism about her." "You didn't use curse words but saying that our physical training is disorganized was offensive and we just don't like that in our gym." So you canceled my membership based on criticism? What happened to the customer is always right? This is how Sun Oaks makes amends for a mistake they made? Wow! Her reply is well we made amends by returning the 15 dollar charge to your mother already... but we will still charge your guy's card for a family membership this month and not let you use it! read more
