After eating lunch next door, I felt like having dessert. I had been to a Sesame Donuts on Scholl's Ferry, and they had a case with vegan donuts. I was curious if this particular Sesame Donuts had vegan donuts. I was checking out the shelves and didn't find any donuts that were labeled vegan. I thought I would ask on the off chance that they did have some, not expecting it. I asked the gal at the counter, and she told me they had some in back and needed to add the finishing touch. There was chocolate or maple, and a couple others. I got the maple one. It took a little bit of time, but it came out pretty warm and the maple glaze was warm and oozing. It was tasty. If I were to get it again, I think I would ask for the glaze on the side, and dunk the donut in the glaze. Not sure if that's an option..but it should be! read more

Prior to the pandemic, Hillsboro proper had zero doughnut shops. None. Sesame Donuts propped up a "cafe" counter in the library, but your nearest bets were Donut Palace in Beaverton and Donut Day in Aloha. Its lone standalone donut shop, Perfection Bakery, closed in 2015 after it moved off of Main Street into Hank's Thriftway and went down with the ship. You'd think this burg would be a bit more grateful for this place's existence, but this page tells me the folks wooed to Oregon by their first bit of Blue Star at the airport are in their feelings over serviceable-to-outright-creative donuts. Since this Sesame opened about four years ago, it's been exactly what it needs to be: Steady, reliable and slightly off-kilter. Yes, a Portland Creme is going to have maple on top and coffee creme in the middle, since the area loves both a maple bar and coffee. It's going to have vanilla frosted donuts with cereal on them because nobody wants to wait in line at Voodoo for the drier equivalent. It's going to have buttermilk bars, bear claws, berry and apple fritters, crullers and the Sid's Special because people love the classics and don't mind when you play the hits. Is the coffee great? No. Are there kolaches for the disproportionate amount of Texas expats here? Yep. Are you going to get the occasional seasonal flavor or color of even standard varieties like the maple bar and Oregon? Absolutely. But what's the biggest problem this place faces? It isn't "dry" end-of-day donuts you can often get at a discount (what you get for coming in at 8 p.m.). It isn't grumpy staff, which is a donut-shop staple, as they're up at grey-sky dawn making your donuts and may not be up for smiling pretty for every slack jawed goober who stumbles into the door. It isn't even the rotating variety which, guess what, is a donut shop: Those trays are going to vary day to day, if not hour by hour. No, this place's issue is threefold: 1. Deep-suburban Hillsboro's penchant for labeling anything that doesn't look like it did 40 years ago as "weird," which is plenty weird in itself. 2. Subdivided Hillsboro's insistence that wait staff grin and dance for nickels, otherwise it's going to withhold their tip and 3. That corner of Hillsboro's lack familiarity with the establishment it's entered, its propensity for nitpicking its fairly normal traits to within an inch of their life, and its proclivity toward STILL sitting there on a Saturday morning holding up the line as it "ummmmms" and "hmmmmmms" its way through a mixed dozen. Sesame Donuts has been a gift to Hillsboro, and I'm glad to see it regularly treated as such. I realize this town regularly looks down its nose at gifts--decent pizza, well-located bowling alleys, one-seat trains to the airport, proximity to farms and wineries--but this one shouldn't be taken for granted. P.S. No, Sesame Donuts is not related to Mr. Maple. Mike Aljamal didn't open Mr. Maple's first location until 2019. Said Fakih turned a Dunkin' Donuts he bought in 1987 into Sesame Donuts in 1999 and grew the brand to 10 family owned locations. The resemblance you're seeing is a resemblance to how Dunkin' Donuts shops used to look. read more

Donuts tasted OK. However, the lady helping us had a disgusting look on her face as she got our donuts and didn't seem to be too happy to help us. I mean, at least put a fake smile on your face but just made me not wanna come back poor Customer Service I don't know if it's just us . Sesame Donuts appears to be the same company as Mr. Maple Donuts. I could be wrong, but the similarities are uncanny (selection divided into "fancy" and "classic" varieties, the same pricing for dozens of each or for a "half and half", what appears to be the same font on their signage, several varieties called the same thing and having exactly the same appearance). With that said, Sesame has food items that Mr. Maple doesn't such as "kolaches" and "croissants". Sesame has a large selection with more cake varieties than others, is clean, and is brightly-lit. Service is prompt and friendly. The quality of their donuts is pretty average...nothing outstanding, but nothing terribly bad. The parking lot for the shopping center in which it resides is small and tight, which can make for a frustrating experience. read more

Yesterday my wife made breakfast at home instead of picking up. Bacon, eggs and coffee (for the adults of course). She said she needed me to pick up something else...doughnuts. I was ok with that. Picked up 6 "Tiger" doughnuts, also known as maple. I was able to turn one into a "Pouser" Maple Bacon Bar a la VooDoo Doughnuts. I wish that Donut Day was closer but it worked in a pinch. read more

Stopped in the other morning for the first time to buy a couple dozen for my team. My team absolutely loved them and were chomping at the bit while I took the photo to start enjoying. We live in an odd part of the world. Hillsboro has great food but this isn't it. I like--what I call this style--classic donuts. I grew up around these types of shops. The smell of yeasty goodness would foretell the sweet surprises inside these utilitarian Formica boxes. I have to allow that I suspect strongly these donuts were made this morning. Fresh donuts are what heaven is about. But, fried food being what it is, doesn't do well with long float times. These were flat-out stale. A better shop might not have considered it acceptable and made an early, then later batch. I really wanted to like this place. This might be the first time in my life I have thrown away a donut. I tried three. Chocolate-glazed old fashioned was okay, a little drier than I'd like. I arrived in the late afternoon and these were clearly early-morning donuts that had been sitting out in the air all day. Portland Creme was the one I was most excited about and also most disappointing. It's like a Boston Creme but with maple and caramel on top instead of chocolate. Hillsboro finally has it's own donut shop! They're located in the Cornell Square shopping mall near Burgerville by the Hillsboro Airport. They offer donuts, donut holes, bagels, croissants, tea, coffee and free wifi. The bright pink decor is upbeat and friendly. The donut selection includes bake and raised donuts, crullers, and fritters along with some seasonal and local variations. We enjoyed this family chain's offerings at their 185th store, so we're excited to have one closer to home. read more

The people are friendly, the coffee is good, the donuts are no better or worse than the next joint, the prices if anything are a bit higher. So why 1 star? Tipping in Oregon has gotten ridiculous during the pandemic, and has continued afterwards, but this establishment has taken it to new levels bordering on fraud. Their POS register requests tips starting at 18% and up, but the options to decline to tip, or enter custom amounts, is disabled. So their actual prices are 18% or more higher than advertised. 18% tip for pouring a cup of coffee and putting a couple of donuts in a bag? Seriously? Why don't you pay your workers the right wage, and raise prices to compensate? read more

The blonde girl (Gretchen) I believe is her name! Extremely rude, no manners and she overcharged me on a half-dozen of donuts. Was hoping this was an isolated incident, however last week when it snowed. My wife went in and was waiting for 5-minutes at the counter when the owner, instead of acknowledging her and that they'd be right there just shouted "we're busy!" After another 5 minutes he came to the counter and was SHOCKED to see that the employee that was supposed to be working the counter was not there! Hands down the best donuts I've ever had. And I've had a lot of donuts. The custard filled donuts are actually filled with custard rather than the overly sweet instant frosting.
