Veggie lo mein - no thanks
Orit D.

Ordered takeout tonight. Lady on the phone was so monotone and not personable at all. I should have know when I ordered in quarts and pints that I wasn't going to get what I was looking for in terms of Chinese food. What we ordered * crispy tofu * dinner special general tso chicken * veggie lo mein * sautéed string beans * vegetable fried rice * beef ho fun Thoughts * my tofu wasn't crispy by the time I got home but it was decent, nothing to write home about. I've had some gooooood crispy tofu but this was basic. * general tso chicken was in big chunks which was great but the flavor just wasn't there for us * lo mein had no flavor, these noodles are basically the reason I don't enjoy Americanized Chinese food. I couldn't finish my serving cause it was just not pleasing at all. * the green beans were really really good but the ends weren't trimmed? * vegetable fried rice was average, bigger egg pieces which I like * The beef ho fun was oddly sweet and the noodles were all stuck together and rolled up Would I go back...probably not (as long as miss hot is around)

Could've been better. Will not return. They get uptight when reviews are not shiny, happy, and wonderful.

We have enjoyed their delivery for about 3 years now. Biggest Chinese menu I've ever seen and all that we have tried we have enjoyed.

Finally had the chance to dine in. Walked in at 1:45pm on a Monday and there was soft music playing…read morein the dining room. I was seated and immediately served complimentary tea, and fried wontons with sweet and sour sauce. I ordered the Kung Pao lunch special which comes with a choice of egg roll or soup, and white or vegetable friend rice. I chose the wonton soup and fried rice, and I ordered an egg roll as well. The egg roll came out quickly, and the lunch special was served right when I finished that. The food was good and the dish was spicy (Kung Pao is supposed to be spicy but it never is-- not for me) and the service was polite. When the check came it was accompanied by a plate with two slices of orange and a fortune cookie. The only thing I didn't like about the visit was that there was an advertisement for a big commercial law firm on the back of the fortune slip and the "lucky number" was the phone number. I thought that was tacky. I walked out at 1:15pm. Great, quick lunch.

Nice people, good food, pleasant atmosphere: because I can never decide which is more important,…read morethey are equally important factors when rating a restaurant. Golden Hill has all three. And a lunch menu. Wow! I just gave my receipt another look and the people are nicer than I thought. I thought they were pleasant, friendly, happy we were there, concerned that we would enjoy our visit. The lunch menu offerings were each $10.95 and included eggroll OR soup, and white or vegetable fried rice. Daughter ordered the Eggplant in Garlic Sauce with eggroll and white rice, plus an appetizer order of steamed dumplings. I ordered Eggplant with Pork in Garlic sauce with eggroll and white rice, plus a small bowl of Hot and Sour Soup. The soup on the appetizer menu was $3.95. My receipt shows the server put the soup as my lunch choice and charged $2.95 for the eggroll. She never said a word, didn't point out that I could save a dollar by switching the sides around. So the people are all I thought plus kind and conscientious. Marvelous. I was delighted with everything I ate. The entree was enough for two, so supper came home with me. The eggroll was fresh and crisp and non-greasy, seemed homemade. Excellent. The eggplant was perfectly prepared and cooked, as was the pork. Delicious. The hot and sour soup was easily one of the best I've had, and I'm always looking for a great hot and sour soup. Coming from downtown Buffalo, we'd been in Williamsville because I had an appointment on Essjay Rd. Afterward, we looked for a place to have lunch before shopping. Finding Golden Hill at 4001 Sheridan Dr. in Amherst was pure serendipity. You can bet, though, that I will visit again after next appointment.

Went here for lunch and ordered hot and sour soup, chicken soup with noodles, happy family, triple…read moredelight combination platter and mixed veggies with tofu. The servings are definitely smaller than other places and the quality is not that great. The flavors seemed off. I've had these dishes and soups numerous timed from multiple other Chinese restaurants throughout WNY but this place just had very odd flavors and strange consistency to the food. The Hot and Sour soup was lacking flavor and had snot-like clumps in it. The chicken soup with mei fun noodles tasted bitter, almost spoiled or massive amounts of rice vinegar in it. The triple delight combo container was 85% rice and 15% triple delight (very small serving of the entree). The veggie dish and Happy Family were lackluster in flavor and the containers were not filled all the way (only about 3/4 of the way full). There are seats and about 6 tables inside and plenty of parking in the plaza parking lot. The staff is friendly and have everything ready in the usual 10 to 15 minutes. This place works if you are desperate, don't mind weird flavors or lack of flavor, and enjoy getting less than the container can hold. Otherwise, stay away from this place, there are many other Chinese restaurants in the area that are much better.

If you want food that tastes good to take home, eat in while you're on your phone, or in the car like I did on my most recent video as I left town. Don't worry, I didn't use chopsticks. He included a fortune cookie for dessert. I have been getting food here for years. When my kids were sick, and we had to cancel our Thanksgiving plans last minute, they were open. We were thankful. The owners live in the neighborhood, so we would see them watching fireworks at UB. They used to have a large, handwritten Chinese menu on a whiteboard on the wall. You know they are good, like when you see Italians in an Italian restaurant. They serve others who know what's good. I couldn't read the white board, but sometimes I would ask her for something off that menu. She would ask a few questions to narrow it down. Yes, it was good. :) They also serve typical American General Tso's, etc. My favorite is their shrimp egg foo young, without the gravy. We moved away, and I can't find a place we like nearly as well.

It was outstanding…read more The place was packed, in booths and at tables, with Asian families enjoying traditional dishes like congee with roasted duck, and multiple types of noodle dishes and dumplings (bao). Although the dim sum menu is a single page, there are enough different kinds of foods here that even the pickiest of eaters will find something to satisfy them. Vegetarians and vegans will be happy here too. I was really pleased to see that hot and cold soy milks are offered: This restaurant caters to the Asian community, many of whom are lactose-intolerant. The bao are $5.50 - $6.50 for a steamer basket of 3-5 items; it's listed on the menu how many bao to expect, in case you're dining with a crowd. (And you really should!) The congee is listed as "small bowls" for $7.50, but I think at least 3-4 cups of soup fits there. It's easily shared. The stuffed eggplant I ate in Nanjing had ground pork, garlic scapes, and ginger. The ones served here are stuffed with an enormous sweet shrimp in each piece of tender eggplant: Better than I remember. The sesame balls were a little different too: I remember a pale, sweet paste inside a crispy deep-fried ball covered in sesame seeds. Here, the inner paste was sweet and black, but the flavor was the same. So was the joy in eating them. The pork with black bean sauce was so tender and delicious! We made that plate disappear! The har gow/crystal shrimp were perfect. We plan to return soon to try their spicy beef noodles ($13.95) and custard tarts - the recipe for which the Portuguese Jesuits brought to Macao in the 16th century. The atmosphere of the Golden Duck is very relaxed: A dim sum meal is usually a time to drink a little tea, eat a little food, and get caught up with family or friends. There's a full bar if you're celebrating; there's also a private banquet room. The regular menu is also available during the dim sum hours, as is a Mongolian buffet. The regular menu has Peking duck, available with some notice. My favorite celebration meal! Parking is in a strip mall lot, well off the street.
