After an hour of "assessing" our dog's behavior and throwing 2 meals worth of treats, we were told our dog needs psych meds. We were very clear in the paper work and initial intake that we would like to consider training first before going to medication. But it wasn't until after the second appointment that we were told to monitor a "wait list" for reactive training (not an official waitlist; just first to sign up gets in when the email comes out). Now after shelling out $800 and waiting 8 weeks for these appointments, we are back to square one and feeling a lot of regret for going to this business.

My dogs first boarding experience was two months ago. My husband and I had a travel delay in Paris, and were not going to be able to pick up our dog until the following day because our flight was rescheduled. I made an international call to inform them, however they said that he could not stay an extra night...thankfully my brother lives an hour + away was able to pick him up. This added another 2 hours of driving to our trip after traveling for over 24 hours. My brother also told me they originally brought out the wrong dog to him. After my dog was settled back home, I looked at the receipt and medical records. They were suppose to give him his influenza #2 of the series but it was documented as he received influenza #1. In shock since they had his medical and vaccine records, I called them and they said it was incorrectly documented, and they did credit us which I appreciated. His most recent visit is the most disturbing. Over the July 2nd weekend, with heat index over 100, my dog came home with the pads of his back paws burned. We noticed as soon as he got out of Pender a limp in his back legs. My husband went back inside to ask if he had any accidents or hurt himself, had they noticed him limping? The answer we got was that he got 5 walks a day and they didn't notice him limping once. Therefore I assume they didn't give him any attention or they just didn't care. When we got in the car, my husband looked at our dogs paws and immediately my dog pulled back his back legs and whimpered. The pictures don't do it justice, but it appears he was left out on the hot turf or pavement. It doesn't take long for the pads to burn from the heat of summer as most dog owners know & I never thought this would happen at a boarding facility. My dog is now limping, licking his burns and my husband has to take off work to take him to the vet. We wanted to love pender retreat as much as we love our vet at Pender Fairfax and the convenience of the retreat to the airport but after this we will be looking to board our dog elsewhere.

Though he is tough and firm with the dogs, it was wonderful to see how much our puppy loved to be with Mike and his well he responded to him. But perhaps most importantly, Mike didn't just train our dog, he trained US and made us - our entire family including the kids - much better dog owners. I frankly don't know where we would have been with our Samoyed had it not been for the guidance and training Mike provided.

In addition to that, he did provide sound guidance on how to work with these, as well as a frank opinion. The techniques that he used with our dogs were effective, but the logic that he used to explain behaviors made me raise my eyebrows a few times. Mike subscribes to pack theory. Pack theory is outdated and was debunked by the same group of scientists that performed the study. (If you don't believe me, go to google scholar and look up some recent studies from academic papers.) Those notes aside, I do find Mike's professionalism to be highly questionable. Multiple times, Mike had directed condescending comments towards me flat out saying that women (unlike men) were more prone to making emotional (and i guess the implication was that they consequently make irrational and irresponsible) decisions. From how he talked, I was under the impression that he was coming into the consultation with this attitude, because I am female, even before meeting me. This is due in part because his phrasing indicated that he felt that my husband was the "rational" decision maker. I felt very disrespected in my own home. This behavior is very concerning, especially since he said that his daughter had made him aware that these types of comments could be perceived as sexist. I would assess other trainers first. I suspect you can get the same results, for the same/better price, but without the disrespect or outdated logic.

We went to another trainer and he made us feel like we were at a lost cause…read morewith our Goldendoodle, Winnie, who began developing aggressive and reactive behaviors over a span of a year. Through our initial consultation, Jennifer provided a positive, reinforcing way to assist us with training utilizing science, animal and human behaviorism with tons of analogies in between! She has a warm personality and I felt at ease with her. She really loves and understands dogs, and was very open minded! We decided to add another puppy to our family and setup another private training session with her after we realized that Winnie was having trouble adjusting to our Sheepadoodle, Linus. Jennifer helped us reading their body language and put them into situations where they would understand and respect each other. We also received homework which we worked on diligently, and now they're literally best friends! I was only hoping to have them co-exist with each other, but I'm so happy that they're getting along. I would highly recommend Jennifer and her team at Lead With Fun, as they really do understand dogs! They also have a variety of different classes as well outside of private training.

We've had Jen work with both of our dogs, with excellent results…read more Our lab mix, Cthulhu, was leash aggressive with absolutely horrific social skills and Jen help show us what was stressing our dog out and how to work with our dog. We now have a dog that is much nicer on the leash and is able to play nice with other dogs. Three years later, we fostered another dog named Ellie. Ellie had no manners and we wanted to adopt her, but we needed to make sure that she got along with Cthulhu. We used Jen again to identify the issues and sources of apprehension between both dogs. Both dogs get along well now. We also have Ellie enrolled in Jens obedience class and Ellie is responding very well. The training techniques that Jen uses make it very easy to understand how to train your dog.

Daniel refused to send any confirmation due to him feeling like our dog had anxiety, which is what we brought him there for to begin with. We did not get the results we wanted from Loudon K9 so we canceled our subscription. Daniel is now retaliating because we will not keep paying them.
