I took my pet in for emergency and the vet who he seen was Andrea Sonichsen. She was incredibly short and rude and copped an attitude almost immediately upon seeing her. She lacks experience and does not really know what she is doing, I would highly recommend you seek a more experience vet who does not have behavior issues. I thought it would be perfect to begin boarding my dog at Pender Pet Retreat since he is in the care of a great vet at Pender in Fairfax. My dogs first boarding experience was two months ago. My husband and I had a travel delay in Paris, and were not going to be able to pick up our dog until the following day because our flight was rescheduled. I made an international call to inform them, however they said that he could not stay an extra night...thankfully my brother lives an hour + away was able to pick him up. This added another 2 hours of driving to our trip after traveling for over 24 hours. My brother also told me they originally brought out the wrong dog to him. After my dog was settled back home, I looked at the receipt and medical records. They were suppose to give him his influenza #2 of the series but it was documented as he received influenza #1. In shock since they had his medical and vaccine records, I called them and they said it was incorrectly documented, and they did credit us which I appreciated. His most recent visit is the most disturbing. Over the July 2nd weekend, with heat index over 100, my dog came home with the pads of his back paws burned. We noticed as soon as he got out of Pender a limp in his back legs. My husband went back inside to ask if he had any accidents or hurt himself, had they noticed him limping? The answer we got was that he got 5 walks a day and they didn't notice him limping once. Therefore I assume they didn't give him any attention or they just didn't care. When we got in the car, my husband looked at our dogs paws and immediately my dog pulled back his back legs and whimpered. The pictures don't do it justice, but it appears he was left out on the hot turf or pavement. It doesn't take long for the pads to burn from the heat of summer as most dog owners know & I never thought this would happen at a boarding facility. My dog is now limping, licking his burns and my husband has to take off work to take him to the vet. We wanted to love pender retreat as much as we love our vet at Pender Fairfax and the convenience of the retreat to the airport but after this we will be looking to board our dog elsewhere. read more

When having our two dogs stay at Pender, we had them boarded each in their own dog condo. Within two days of pick up, one dog became very ill and the vet diagnosed kennel cough. Our second dog was symptomatic a couple days after that. I contacted Pender and at first received a generic response wishing us well and an empty offer for us to keep them updated. When I did respond that the second dog was sick and it was upsetting that there was exposure that caused them both to be sick, I received a neutral response essentially explaining how contagious the illness was and the general manager shaking off any responsibility. I am beyond upset and disappointed that this is the response provided by a vet run facility. Our pets are our family and I expect them to be well taken care of while at Pender. We were never warned of any outbreak and they really didn't care when we alerted them. We are still struggling with sleepless nights as the dogs continue to wretch through recovery and Pender didn't even give the courtesy of a response when we expressed our situation. We acknowledged that things happen and no facility can prevent an outbreak but how they handled the situation was completely unacceptable. Fortunately northern Virginia has a lot of options when you need to board your pet. Please look to a place that will protect your pet and keep them safe, you won't be guaranteed that here. I checked my cat in here while we were in the process of a move. She showed up on a Thursday afternoon. The check in was easy and would recommend filling out the paperwork before hand that you can get online. Just makes life a lot easier. One of the techs showed up where our cat would stay. They also were accommodating to her eating habits because we always make food available to her. There was one other cat in the cat area who looked exactly like my cat except he was a boy and his eyes were different colors. We joked that when my friend picked her we would end up with the other cat because they were identical. My friend picked up my cat early in the morning so the cat could be taken to the airport to fly to Texas. The cat was already set to go when my friend arrived and my friend didn't have to do to much since my paperwork was filed out and my credit card was already on file. I made sure to call the night before to remind them that my friend was coming earlier morning. Please note that it does cost more if the cat is picked up before 7am. I would recommend boarding your cat here if you have no one to watch your cat. My cat seemed pretty normal well as normal as a cat can be. I think the airplane ride is what freaked her out the most. She was back to her bitchy self within a few days arriving to her new home. read more

I had to find a place to leave Klaus while my wife and I went to South Carolina for a wedding, and I saw that the vet clinic we take him to has a kennel as well, so I made a 3 night reservation for the little guy in one of their "Executive Suites." The suite cost just about as much as a hotel room and for the inflated price your dog gets a big foam bed covered in a soft blanket, a morning playtime with the employees, a chew treat each day, an afternoon trail hike, and an evening playtime with a frozen treat. Did I mention that the suite has a web cam that you can log into to check on your pup? No? Well it does, and I could log in directly from my iPhone... Which I did... A lot. And I have to say, it was really nice to check in and see that your dog wasn't freaking out about being left alone. The suite also comes equipped with a TV kept at a low volume to keep your dog from being too lonely during the day (we told them to keep it on ESPN or CNN since he's most used to). hearing/seeing those at home). Excessive? Maybe, but also pretty neat. Since the Pet Retreat has access to Klaus's medical records at Pender (his vet) they noticed when we checked Klaus in that he would need some shots updated soon. We were told that they could do them while he was there and they wouldn't cost any more than they would at the primary location for our vet. Bonus! Anyway, Klaus came back happy, healthy, and clean which is about all you can ask for when you leave your dog in the hands of strangers for a few days. And while the stay was somewhat expensive, I'll choose this place again without any hesitation. read more

Pets are part of your family. My 2 dogs are special to me. So, when something is done to them by a business I want others to be aware. I've boarded my 2 year old ridgeback at Pender Pet Services since he was a pup. Recently another ridgeback was added to our team. I paid Pender's charge to provide group daycare services to the new puppy, to get him acclimated to playing with other dogs. Day one they introduced him to over 12 dogs immediately. He was overwhelmed. This is not what should've been done. However it was done so they could then try to get me to pay for a more expensive one on one class, which he did not need. I called them and again requested that he be gradually integrated with other dogs. They refused and bluntly told me to come and get my puppy. Maybe they were not a good fit. I asked to speak with the manager and was informed she was not in. I requested the contact details for the owner and that was refused as well. This is how you treat a customer you've had a good relationship with for 2 years? Two years into 2-3 times a week daycare and my dog's picture was not even on their wall. No regard for him or his parent. I am sharing this in hopes that someone else won't experience this terrible customer service and treatment from Pender. read more

While the facility is nice and 'most' of the employees are professional, thorough and capable, the manager Sami is atrocious. She is instantly rude, condescending, and unprofessional. When attempting to ask questions to understand why I have been given contradictory information, her response was very defensive and she became angry because she did not have an answer (although she was looking at a system of record). Beware that unauthorized and duplicate charges as well as systems that are not integrated can lead to conversations with Sami in which she will not handle you as a valued customer. read more

I have always been a fan of Pender but since I discovered the Chantilly location, I am in love. And not because the veterinarians are hottt, but because they are hottt and helpful. They suggested services that I might need in the future but was not pushy. I took my pet here for veterinarian services, however half of this location is a Pet Retreat. I have never had to board my dog, but after meeting the staff I would trust them with my precious cargo. My first visit here was for a checkup and I am thankful that I didn't have to wait and was seen immediately. Everyone appeared to be happy as if they were sipping on happy juice. This particular winter day, it was 70 degrees and one technician said even though she knew it was beautiful outside, she still wanted to be inside working. What?!? To me this was crazy talk, but then I realized that someone needed to be working while the rest of us was enjoying the weather. Since she volunteered, I agreed. Hottt doctors. Friendly Staff. If I could give zero stars I would. The best advice I can give is if you don't want to pay extra money for ER visits to other vets for the mess ups Pender will cause your pet, then just avoid the whole place entirely. They are extremely unorganized, the front desk staff is rude and careless, and all they seem to care about is charging you extra money (even if it's them fixing an issue they made). To top it off, they'll mess up your pet and then blame it on you (and/or the ER Vet that you had to take your pet to to have their mess up fixed). When we took our puppy to the emergency vet, we found out he had an infection in his ears (due to Pender) and when Pender found out, they denied denied denied that that was ever the case and actually asked us what vet we had seen at the ER.. almost as if to confront them. Super childish. Dr. Kelsey Gerbig at Pender came out to talk with us and figure out was going on and was very sympathetic to our frustrations. However, she seems to be the only good one there and you have to go through a lot of bullsh*t to get to her. Luckily we found another vet who is AMAZING and is currently working with us to fix everything Pender messed up with our puppy. Don't go here. Please. read more

We have been taking our two huskies and yorkie to Pender in Chantilly for around 5 years now. We are always above and beyond pleased with the friendly staff and understanding doctors. We utilize both the Veterinary services and Pet Retreat. The love for animals in this place is palpable. Strange thing to say about a Vetinary/ Pet Retreat? Well, we have experienced other places discriminating our breeds. So, the welcoming staff and doctors who are excited to see each and every pet that walks, hops or crawls through their door, is extremely refreshing. For overseas dog transport, they did a fabulous job! Our dog traveled from VA to Europe and Lesley was in contact the entire way and staff at Pender were kind and attentive. The transport is busy during the summer, so getting in touch with Lesley can take an email or two, but not long, she was great at getting back and answering all my concerns, never making me feel rushed. We left our dog & crate the day before at the kennel. Pender transports everything to the airport. Pender takes care of everything from beginning to end. So great not to have that added stress. When our dog failed to arrive as expected, I phoned her personal cell number provided in the paperwork and she got right back to me working fast to find out what had happened at the connecting country. She phoned shortly thereafter and the dog didn't make the connecting flight, but the following day he was there and doing great. He did arrive with conjunctivitis. He vomited the first two days only when left alone, being as highly anxious as he is and all the changes, I attribute it to stress. Today he is back to his usual self. read more

Update: I went back on Wednesday to talk to the operational manager and she in a nutshell did not take responsibility. I told her I was very upset with my dog's treatment. She tried to say that even if they did use the cans I provided it was still a diet change and he would have had stomach issues. It was the receptionists fault for not using my cans, not writing in the instruction notes to use my cans. I told her that my dog had to go to the emergency vet and was borderline hospitalized and she appeared to not care. I said even if it was a dietary change, why was my dog smelling like feces. She says, it was probably the colitis (diarrhea). So I said, so he sat in his own feces long enough for it to dry on him and no one cleaned him up? I mentioned the vomit on his toy, she said oh yeah I saw that and it looked like saliva. All lies, he's had the toy over 2 weeks and has not thrown up on it. I told her i want my money back and she said she's not giving my money back with a snotty attitude. I asked for the corporate number and was told they don't have a corporate, I said i want to see the supervisor, she said she is the supervisor with a snotty attitude. She tried to say that they didn't charge me for over a hundred dollars for overnight stay. That's a lie, the fee was already $189, they didn't charge me $43 late pick up because my dog was mistreated. I also noted when i picked him up they told me it was soft stool that morning and I said he had diarrhea that evening. Soft stool is different from loose stool. This nasty manager claims that soft and loose are the same and diarrhea is different. LIES! Soft can still be picked up because it is formed. My poor dog had watery brown liquid poo being expelled from his body. He had bloody liquid poo Tuesday when i took him for the emergency vet visit. That is not normal stress diarrhea. I've already made a claim to the BBB, called Animal Control, and the ASPCA. If need be, I will get my lawyer to deal with them. read more

I've been going to Pender Chantilly for years for my German Shepherd rex for either vetinary and/or daycare services but feel it fair to write a review on my experience as I see many negative reviews... First, Dr. Henderson has been the primary doctor I've dealt with and everytime communicates clearly and explains clearly any procedure or complication that has arisen over the years. Besides the normal annual check ups, Rex, my wild and curious dog, managed to get worms as a puppy and most recently lyme disease from ticks(he's not a lap dog after all) . Yet, we've dealt with these issues and he's doing great. As far as daycare goes, Rex doesn't like it but he always returns well cared for. The one thing I recommend is bathroom breaks immediately before drop off and after as they only let the dogs out once I believe. I think this part is important because I see other reviews about kennel experiences and I think keeping the pups on a good schedule mitigates a lot of the issues. Cost is fairly reasonable and I definitely appreciate that they waive daycare fees if Rex is also in for vetinary services. Lastly, the fenced in dog park they have is a great bonus. read more

Our Sphynx Tyrone spent 14 days at the pet retreat and the entire staff treated him wonderfully! We were able to see him being brought out of his kitty condo and Ty was calm, comfortable, and even happily accepted a smooch from one of the staff members. We called several times throughout his stay and obtained in-depth status reports each time. The discount for being a first timer at the pet retreat was also a plus. Upon our return home Ty was right back to normal into his regular routine with little to no transition period. We did notice that the complimentary bath and additional kitty spa treatment hadn't been done. We called this afternoon to follow up, and the services had not been scheduled at initial check-in, which is why they weren't done. We were able to reschedule all of these services at the Fairfax campus, which is much more convenient, all free of charge. We are very pleased with our experience with the staff and services at Pender Pet Retreat and highly recommend to others! read more

I have to say I got mixed feelings about this pet retreat facility. Booked the exec suites for 2nights.includes a low bed,tv and snacks,scheduled walks and play time.Did i mention they have a live stream where you can check in using the computer? As to how much of these are actually carried out remains unknown to me,First night I had the separation anxiety so I logged in their web to check on the cam. Was wondering why it was past 6 and still he wasn't fed.They close @5pm on weekends. I had to call and remeind them that they gotta read the instructions and that the dog has to be taken out and fed. They appear to tell you all the right things when you call to inquire,but when it comes to the execution and carrying out of the actual instructions that is where they fail. I had to call several times just to follow up and check in. You can only check on the camera if the lights are on,if you check in after their office hours it would be pitch dark and you cannot see anything. read more

I can't say enough good things about this place. I'm the owner of a ten week old yorkie and I had to board him at the last minute due to a last minute trip I had to take to SF. I was recommended another place and I also did my research on Yelp. After checking out a few websites, my first and last call was made here. Sarah was extremely helpful and friendly over the phone. They also had space available for my pup right then and there, so I drove over for a tour. I was quite impressed when I walked in. Everyone was friendly and the place was very, very clean. Sarah gave me a tour of the facilities and all the information I needed. It was my first time parting with my pup so I had a lot of questions and she was very patient. There are 4 different types of boarding room options owners can choose from. I ended up paying $32 for a "Senior Suite," which was two huge pens for my little baby (it was so huge that they had two Great Danes sharing one suite). I also payed $14.99 for puppy play school, a 15 min walk, and extra snacks in the afternoon and night. I felt very comfortable leaving my babe there but, I was so sad to part that I went back to check on my pup a couple hours later with my boyfriend. Our yorkie is like our child. Sarah willingly gave us another tour and we checked on our pup who seemed so chill and happy. I came back a day and a half later to pick him up and the staff presented me with a report card, which recorded his food and water intake and what not, with a picture. They were also kind enough to give him a bath after taking him for his walk. So he was returned to me a happy and clean little boy! I highly recommend this place and will definitely be back when needed. read more

Just used pender's boarding service for our dog Baci for the first time and was more than pleased! We picked her up and she was happy, smelling great from her bath, and slept the rest of the day at home. I think some of the negative reviews aren't necessarily the fault of Pender. Some dogs are just extremely nervous and out of sorts when they're put in a new place without the familiarity of their own home. read more

I had to put my cat in a resort for the holiday. I have only had to do it once before and I find the experience so stressful. I called at the last minute and found the Pender Pet Resort in Chantilly. I liked them because they have someone on site at the facility 24 hours a day/365 days a year. That gave me a lot of comfort. I was initially going to put her in another facility but they were closed for Christmas and no one was supposed to be there except to feed the animals in the am and pm. (I always wonder what would happen if there was an emergency of some sort, God forbid.) When I pulled up to Pender I nearly turned around. All I heard was the sound of dogs barking (sounded like 100 of them. I found out later there is a dog park and resort nearby). I went inside and found the resort to be soundproof and peaceful. The front desk staff were just so friendly and it was obvious they cared about animals. I left my cat without a concern for her safety and well being. When I picked her up the next day I found her hiding in her cage, but otherwise unscathed. She ate normally when she got home which tells me she wasn't traumatized (when she stayed at a place last year it took her days to become 'normal' and to eat again). I really liked Pender. They gave me total peace-of-mind about leaving my cat there. I would recommend them to anyone who is like me..highly neurotic about their animal and worrisome. :) Pender really did help me feel better about leaving her at a facility. If I could change anything at the facility it would be to incorporate play time into their schedule for cats. They have it for dogs but it's not an option for cats (although they let them out when they clean their cages). I asked if my cat could be let out and they said they'd do that for her. Allowing the cats out one at a time would be a great asset for pet owners who want that option. A lot of places offer that for a fee. I would be willing to pay to know my cat is able to roam and play a bit during her stay. I think the facility is great and I will definitely use them again in the future. I will never use this place again. My one year old lab puppies were not provided water at all during their stay. The staff never walked by or checked on them. We had paid for the presidential suites which included several walks, of which my pups did not receive. My pups were also left to sleep and walk in their own feces (which somehow covered their room) and it was not until we called the kennel that someone walked in, took them out and then cleaned up the room. This was all plain to see on the webcam attached to their suite. We ended our trip early and removed them from this awful, neglectful situation. read more

My parents have been taking their pups to Pender Fairfax for years and sadly, that's where they said farewell to them. Pender sent paw prints and sweet messages of sympathy. Naturally, when I moved back to the area - they recommended the nearer newer Chantilly location for my own lab boys. I generally take them on base for routine care - so I wanted to ensure that they offered reasonable pricing and potentially a military discount at Pender. I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only do they offer the discount but they gave me a bonus new member discount, as well. We set the boys up for an overnight at the retreat and it was very simple to register, request add-on's, log behaviors and make any special requests. All of their medical records transferred easily and both pups were able to lodge together in a suite. They don't like other dogs and often argue over food, but Pender's caretakers were great about providing them playtime together alone and also fed them separately from one another. I actually checked in on them once and saw the caretaker slide one pup's food in, he was alone in the suite and his brother was elsewhere being fed. I loved the webcam capability, and admittedly watched it more often than I should have haha I was happy to see them tail wagging, laying on their beds peacefully, and every now and then - see their water swapped or food slipped in and even occasionally, I would see them petted and loved on by caretakers. Every one of the employees and caretakers I encountered on the phone or at pickup/drop off were super friendly and kind. I was nervous to leave them overnight but they quickly eased the tensions and the boys seemed to be in great spirits. I would most definitely have them stay overnight again and am happy that they'll be seeing the vet routinely here, as well. read more

We used Pender Pet Retreat this past week for our 19 week old puppy while we were out of town for the day. It was a wonderful experience from the time I called to make the appointment, to his intake and pick up. All the staff were welcoming to us and our puppy. It was obvious when we picked him up that he had had a wonderful experience. My dog spent only three nights at the boarding facility. He has never had a problem boarding in the past. My dog has been very sick since I picked him up from boarding. I called the facility and they did not have any record of him being sick while he was there. Two days has passed and he has lost weight and is dehydrated. Our worst kennel experience ever. Before dropping off our Ridgeback, we called to make sure that they had received all of our documentation and that everything was in order. They said everything was good to go. Upon arrival, however, the manager informed us, rather rudely, that Kita was missing a shot, which no other kennel has asked us for in the past (influenza). I connected him to our veterinarian and he was short with our vet as well. I told him that I didn't appreciate his demeanor, and he softened and told me that he would waive the shot and give us a discount because his staff had messed up. 10 days later, when we picked up our dog, it was obvious that she had been severely underfed (it looked like she'd lost 7-8 lbs...see pics) even though we provided plenty of food and included feeding instructions on the admission forms AND on the food container. I brought my chihuahua here last month for a nail trim, pretty basic right? Wrong. My first indication should've been their phone going directly to a "voice mailbox full" message. I overlooked it and booked online through the website, clarifying during booking that I was bringing him just for a nail trim. I arrive for my appointment and call the main office number from my car like the email says to do. No answer. I got out and called the number on the door instead--finally I get through. They tell me "we don't do walks ins". I told them I have an appointment and they literally ask me if I'm "sure I'm at the right place" like I'm an idiot. I said come outside and look at the confirmation email. A teenaged girl comes out and she says "Weird. I'll see if our groomer will make an exception." Dude, what? I had an appointment. After 20 min back and forth I handed them my dog (dumb decision I know) and they say it will take 30 minutes....for a nail trim. I advise them to muzzle him because he will bite (hence, why I took him to a "professional") and they say no problem we will muzzle him. They call me and say they're finished and I paid over the phone before they brought him out, which has been the standard since covid started. 2 more teenage girls bring him outside and I asked if he was good and if they muzzled him. WTF does that even mean? You just said he was muzzled. So I was CHARGED FULL PRICE and only THEN was I informed that they trimmed less than half his nails. Also, the nails that WERE "trimmed" looked basically the same, so I actually paid for nothing. Unbelievable. Bring your dog to a place run by competent adults. read more
