I have used this business several times for alterations. I have always been happy with her work. I always allow ample time for her to get to my items as I know she is extremely busy. She always tries to give me an approximate day. I just tell her I am in no hurry and please call when she is done. This works for me. I'm surprised by all these negative reviews. I had the owner for several sewing classes. I found her to be extremely knowledgeable. She was courteous with all the students, and willing to give any help needed. I fear she may be overworked, in the shop and/or at home. Wishing her and all her customers the best. read more

Worst experience I have ever had with a business. The lady was rude and horrible from the moment I walked in the door. she BUTCHERED my daughters $200 dress beyond repair. She gave me the dress without the strap attached. My daughter walked down an aisle at a wedding with a strap safety pinned on and a string of safety pins holding the back of the dress together. i wish i knew how to post the before alterations pic and then the after alterations pic. We took my fiancés suit to Sew-A-Lot for simple alterations on his suit jacket and pants. The seamstress was extremely short and rude with us. She basically told us that none of what we wanted to do was possible and truthfully just seemed as if she just didn't want to help us. We didn't even end up doing business there, but left feeling extremely flustered and annoyed with the service. Do not recommend! read more

I took a suit in to be altered - All that needed done was adjustments to the sleeves. After dropping it off on a Monday, I was told it would be ready the following Monday. I swing by that day around lunch, only to be told that they hadn't gotten to it yet, but it would be ready later. I was fine with that, but told them I'd be back in a few hours. I went back an hour before closing time and they STILL hadn't touched my jacket. They claimed they were 'busy' that day. I finally got my jacket 5(!) days later, but this whole experience left a sour taste in my mouth. The work they did was decent, but I wish they would have had it ready when they said it would be. I'm stationed in southern Illinois for a few months and need a simple hemming of fabric to prevent fraying. I tried a seamstress in a neighboring community first. She was haughty and dismissive. Her price to hem was more than three times what we paid for the piece of fabric... So we found Sew-A-Lot. We called and asked for a callback (left a message). No one called us. We repeated this for THREE weeks. No callback. Finally, we got the employee on the phone. She couldn't give us an estimate on a simple hem job. Then she told us she couldn't even START the work for two weeks, and then it would take another two to three weeks to do it. To hem a piece of fabric so the ends don't fray. ??? Sew-A-Lot is obviously too busy. The seamstress we first spoke with in nearby Murphysboro was similarly too busy. She even warned us that if we didn't leave the fabric to hem on the spot ($45!!), her price would go up. Reminds me of the games many contractors play--no returning calls or messages, not giving estimates, months-long time tables even for small jobs... There are lots of business opportunities out there for people who have skills and who can offer good customer service and fair prices to compete with complacent, supercilious businesses. We invested, instead, in a can of Sullivan's Fray Stop. The edge of the fabric we bought is now just a tad stiffer than the rest of the fabric but you don't see or feel the edge. And it cost us under $15 AND we finished the job in under five minutes. read more

While the seamstress seemed knowledgeable in her field, I was extremely disappointed in the service for several reasons. 1. The online website address was wrong so I wandered for quite a while looking for the business. 2. I was told to pick up my garment after hours at 9:30pm the day before the event I needed it altered for, which was my undergraduate graduation ceremony. Though I called the day of to confirm this, I received 5 phone calls during another ceremony I had to attend prior to the graduation between 5-8pm. i was told I needed to pick up my dress immediately even though I had been told the pick up time was 9:30pm that night. I couldn't very well walk out of my ceremony so I told the seamstress that I could pick it up from her earlier than 9:30 but I had to wait until after the ceremony. She wouldn't accept this and told me I had to get it immediately even though, as I said earlier, I had confirmed the 9:30p.m. pick up earlier that day. She then told me if I didn't come immediately, I wouldn't be able to pick up the dress until the next morning after the graduation ceremony had already started. I told the woman that it was ridiculous to expect this of me. In frustration, she withheld my dress from me and I couldn't wear it to the ceremony. It was extremely disappointing because I had looked for that dress for weeks and I had to come up with something else at the last minute. The service completely overshadowed any ability that this woman has. I really hope this review helps someone to choose another business because I would hate for someone else to be put in my situation. read more

Details04/27/2017 Had a horrible experience! I would have given zero stars but that was not an option. Took my daughter's prom dress in to be hemmed and taken in a little. After having the dress for 2 weeks I get a call 2 days before prom telling me to come pick the dress up because she could not take the dress in. She did However hem it and charged me $30. I paid her to hem a dress that I still can't use. I will never go back and would advise that no one else does either. That's just bad business. read more

I took a vintage tweed blazer in to have all new buttons sewn-on. The lady was super nice to me and did a great job on my blazer. It was finished on-time and the price was very reasonable. I'll definitely be going back to Sew-A-Lot! read more
