I thought I signed up for an afternoon in a sex tent... boy was I wrong. It was a beautiful afternoon despite my mistake, but I wouldn't know it based on my seat at the bar for a wine tasting. I kinda felt like a second class citizen since I wasn't a member. The bartenders were great to talk to as I was the only one there doing any tasting. It was a casual vibe with a "here's the next one" attitude. I feel like they wasted a view for the customers. The bar area had no view. The outside seating area had a view of the parking lot. There was a small members area which had a view of the vineyards. It didn't seem to seat too many people. I asked what that room was and they kinda talked down to me with an "oh, that's for our members" attitude. I'm guessing with that mentality, all of the members fit in that tiny room at once! During the tasting, I wish they explained more about the wines. I wish it had a better environment for tasting. This was a disappointing visit and I was happy I was in and out. I couldn't see spending a few hours here relaxing and escaping. read more

We came in on a sunny afternoon and had an absolutely fabulous wine tasting experience. We sat outside on the patio soaking in the gorgeous views while drinking some incredible wines. The team made sure to give us just enough time to enjoy each round before bringing us the next wine. I appreciate that they didn't tell us what the wine was supposed to taste like. They told us about the grapes, and let us experience the flavor first hand. We ended up getting some great X series wines to take home. What a great day! 3.5 Stars Tasting Flight: $25/tasting for 5 pours (fee waived with three bottle purchase). Beautiful winery sitting on a hilltop overlooking the surrounding vineyards and neighboring wineries. The tasting room has a massive bar with one of the most beautiful bar tops I've seen in a winery, and a Members Only tasting area with spectacular views of the vineyards. We were the first to arrive, so we had the place to ourselves. Janet poured for us, and the service was good. The wines were well made, but not exactly matching our palates. For us, the whites were a little too crisp (we like oak on our whites), and the reds were a little too light bodied, with the exception of their '19 Kamal Cabernet Sauvignon. My opinion aside, I always recommend you check them out for yourself, as your palate may love everything they pour. Also, IMO, bottle prices seem to be pricy. read more

Service! Paid for a wine tasting of 5 wines and it took forever. So slow in between pours. The lady didn't really even want us to taste

This is our 3rd trip to Paso Robles and I can't believe this is our first time to Sextant. The owners were very smart to name a winery that way, although it actually has nothing to do with the first 3 letters. Ashley was the one who helped us out and I must say, she was amazing. She just has a natural gift of being a great conversationalist. Sextant was our first stop of 3 wineries on a Saturday. We were the only ones in the whole place at 10am and the entire time we were there, so we got really personalized service. On to the wines.. everything I tasted was divine. I likened their wines to another Paso winery that I am a member of. Their wines are so easy to drink yet still have that boldness. My favorite was the Tannat for the regular tasting, but Ashley actually let us have a teaser of the wine club exclusives, and I think that's what won me over. I was like, if I love this Caladoc, I'm going to be a member here. And I did. I think it was a trifecta of Ashley providing us great service, the highly unique taste profiles of their wines (their hybrids taste so interesting in a good way, unlike anything I've ever had before), and the really great nautical vibe of this winery (the member's lounge has amazing views of the vineyards in such a cozy atmosphere) that made me get a membership here. One can never have too many wine club memberships. read more

Beautiful winery located on a small hill. Not too much parking. We were seated outside and it was a heat wave weekend, no fans were on, so it was hot. At times we moved our chairs to one side to escape baking in the sun. Our experience was ok. It wasn't amazing (or bad) and we didn't think the wines were of our taste of bold Cabs, especially coming from Austin Hope, Daou and Opolo. Service was so so. The pours were a little on the stingy side, couldn't really get a good sip. We thought the wines were decent from the non-member tasting (about $20 pp). They had 2 whites, which I could go without 1. Nothing extremely bad or nothing that amazed us. My friends actually bought 2 bottles of their Zinfandel, of which we weren't a fan of at the tasting but later at night drank the whole bottle at home, it was pretty good! Not sure if it was the heat that put us down, but we did enjoy their Zin at home. It was nice to come and try it though. We're open to trying smaller less showboat wineries. read more

Really enjoyed this winery. Not only were the wines great, but the views were amazing this winery is so beautiful on the outside. I love the grand entrance to this place. I didn't get to see the interior, but I am only sure it matches the exterior. Aubrie poured our wine and she was amazing she was very sweet she poured the wine and talked to us, and told us about the winery despite being very busy. She also told us about the other locations and let us know she also works at the SLO location where there is a delicious deli. I enjoyed every wine I had. 20 minutes into our tasting my husband and I decided we wanted to be members. We got to take home 3 wines from what would have been a shipment. We really enjoyed ourselves, and loved the atmosphere. This is defiantly one of my new favorites in Paso. read more

First time in Paso and our friends recommended we check out Sextant. We were lucky to get a reservation as it was a holiday weekend and everything seemed to be just about booked up. We did two tastings inside with Irene. Not only was she so knowledgeable but she truly made our experience there spectacular. Irene and Sharyn made us feel like we were hanging out with friends they were so welcoming. You can tell when people truly love what they do and work for an amazing company and that shows in the staff they have. We throughly enjoyed all the wines we tasted and will definitely be recommending to all of our friends headed to paso to visit the lovely ladies at Sextant. Visited Sextant winery this last week with a member, and was blown away by it. First of all, the building and decor are phenomenal. The "nautical" vibe flows throughout, and between the sea-inspired ceiling and the great wood decorations, it really makes you feel comfortable. They allow dogs, and there was a few really sweet ones to welcome us on the way in. The staff there made us feel so welcome. They knew what they were serving, and did generous pours for the tastings. Since we were with a member, they gave us a "pre-paid card" that allowed us to utilize the self service machine if we'd rather that than the bar area. It actually really amplified the experience for me, being able to decide how much of something I wanted. I didn't want to leave, and we stayed here for hours until they were finally closing. My favorites were the Pinot Noir, Kamal-Cab (it's a special offering and about $50/bottle), and the Wheelhouse Zin. Due to price points I ended up stocking up on the Zin. Honestly everything was delish and verrrrry drinkable, and I would have been happy taking home any of the bottles. The merchandise here is also a bit higher quality than other wineries, and I ended up buying a fun tote bag. I'll be back next time, as it was a great experience! read more

Sextant Winery is the best winery in CA if not in North America. There are 3 tasting rooms, one in San Luis Obispo and two in Paso Robles. My wife and my four friends (Leonor, Emmy, Celso and Oscar) did the VIP tasting in Paso and San Luis Obispo (SLO), OMG, it was the best wine tasting experience we ever had, Amy was our host and the customer service she provided was outstanding. All the wines she poured were all delicious, (we bought over 8 cases of wines) she was very knowledgeable all the wines she was pouring, she described what makes great wine great, the wine attibutes of greatness e.g. distinctiveness, balance, precision, complexity, beyond fruitness, length; also she described the building blocks of wine like alcohol which is a critical constituent of wine, the acid content, the tannin, fruitness, dryness and sweetness. Additionally, Amy defined the difference of wines made in SLO (cooler climate) and Paso (hotter climate) temperature swings between day and night, region, terroir, the type/s of barel use, the wine storage temperatures, the winemaking process etc. Hello Guys, if you're looking for great wines and outstanding wine tasting experience, please contact Sextant Winery and ask for Amy and book the VIP tasting experience, you'll be thankful that you did it and I guarantee that you'll never be disappointed!!! This review is almost exclusively based on the quality of the wines sampled by 3 out of 4 people in our group. I am usually the designated non wine drinking driver (everybody needs one) but I was taking copious notes of my wife and our friends experience to the wines offered. I wish I could provide details of the exact wines in question so you can save your time and pallet but I didn't. All I know is the pour out bucket was very full. Only one of the wines sampled was remotely enjoyed. Never seen that happen before. Usually they like 3-5 out 6 wines poured. These are not picky palettes so I was very surprised. The facility is very nice inside and out but the wines need to represent about 75% of the experience. They might want to try some pairings to help out. read more

The winery is a pleasant place to land and the staff is friendly. I joined the wine club and have had two deliveries. I was disappointed with both. This latest was two GSMs and a Syrah with 2% viognier. They were grocery store wine, all three of them. And cost $70 a bottle with tax and shipping included. Previous delivery was a bit better...there were better varietals. Zin, I think, maybe cab. I've always liked the Sextant zin found in grocery stores, but the pricier stuff isn't as good. Try Tobin James for a better club deal and better wine. read more

Another favorite of ours along the Paso Robles wine touring. Sextant has a gorgeous tasting room and a very good array of wines. We were first in the door at opening a few weeks back after a quick trip back to SLO/Paso and our server was very friendly / chatty. We had been there before and wanted to go back to share a tasting, and they were nice to not double-charge as I was driving and not going to really taste. They waive tasting fees with a 3 bottle purchase, but were nice enough to make an accommodation with a 2 bottle purchase this time since we really did not do a full tasting. The wine was not to our taste. With good service, we could have overlooked the underwhelming wine however that did not happen. The tasting room and property looked great but the service seemed, sloppy. Rather than using a container for discarding wine, the waitress poured the glasses on the rock bed near by. A beautiful spot for some lovely wines! This is a tasting room that is not adjacent to any of their vines, but you are surrounded by the vines of others. The space is beautiful with indoor and outdoor tasting available. This is also where they make their wines, so it is an interesting spot. The wines are delicious. Came in on a Saturday with some friends. Nice easy parking and huge doors lead into the tasting room that overlooks the production facility. Nice folks. We split a tasting between me and my wife. They offer a mix of white and red tasting or all reds. We opted for all reds. The wines were good and we had a nice time chatting. One of the wines was paired with a bite of a chocolate truffle which was amazing and a fun twist from normal tastings. None of the wines we tried really blew us away or made us feel like we needed a bottle. But they were all good. The inside is a bit noisy, though there is a member tasting area with couches and a fireplace that overlooks the vineyard. If we were members this space would be more enjoyable but as non-members, we just stood at the bar. Nice staff and there was enough room around the bar to taste without rubbing elbows with the rest of the folks there. It's not a bad idea to stop in and taste if you're nearby, but I didn't find any reason for us to rush back. read more

I am obsessed with sextant wines and have been dying to go to this vineyard for many many years, so when I showed up today, I was disappointed with the way I was treated when I arrived. My group (just 3 of us) showed up at 12:30 and asked to do wine tasting, when the hostess said "sorry, we have 40 people coming at 2pm so you can not taste". I looked around and said "there's no one here." There were literally 3 tables full of people. She looked at me and said "no". I then told her "I was ready to spend lots of money here on buying a lot of wine and you missed out on a great customer". Sooooo disappointed. read more

I hate when I have to give a less than stellar review, especially for a place that I was so hoping to love. I suppose in some ways, I did love aspects of it.... So, lets begin. :::::BACKSTORY::::: I have known about Sextant Winery for quite awhile. Ever since last year when I came to Paso but didnt have a chance to taste their wines. With a name like Sextant, and my gutter brain it just stands out. Fun fact, Sextant has nothing to do with...uh, Sex. Silly me. As the first stop on our wine tour, courtesy of of The Wine Line, we came to Sextant. Just so happens the other couple on the tour wanted to try Sextant also. I was really excited to try their Reds. :::::LOCATION::::: Located off of the picturesque Highway 46, Sextant Winery is located near/with other popular wineries, such as: Grey Wolf, Dark Star, Midnight, and Tooth and Nail. So, there is a variety of wines to try in this small area. You drive up a slightly dusty hill to find a seemingly reserved structure and a very glamorous cow/bull. :::::TASTING ROOM::::: The tasting room is stunning. It is very modern, but in a design forward way. The ceiling is outstanding, makes me want that in my house. To one side of the tasting room you can see wine aging in barrels and being produced. There is a members tasting/sitting area that has a great view also. The tasting counter is in the middle with very attentive staff pouring and educating you on the wine. :::::WINE::::: So, this is why I gave Sextant the rating I did. The wine, at least the reds...we sub-par. I did the traditional tasting as well as the reserve tasting. For about $5 more you get to taste 2 reserve wines. Traditional Tasting ($15) - 2015 Sextant X-Series Albarino - 2012 Sextant Edna Valley Chardonnay - 2014 Sextant Wheelhouse Zinfandel - 2014 Sextant "Holystone" Zinfandel - 2014 Sextant Shell Creek Petite Syrah - 2012 Sextant Passage So, the Albarino and Chardonnay were delicious. Surprising the 2 white wines were the best. In my honest opinion, the red wines were sorta awful. I was very disappointed. Reserve Tasting ($5) - 2014 Night Watch - Sextant Genoa XVI These wines were good. Not shockingly they were $50 and $80 bottles. They were good, but they werent $50 and $80 bottles good. Came back in over the weekend, and I have to say...I love being a member here. They really give you the VIP SERVICE! Sharyn was awesome! She welcomed me and my guests, invited us to the VIP room, brought us glasses and also a pitcher of water (which is always great when you are wine tasting) and asked us if the temperature and music was okay. Probably the best experience we've had at any winery. We were there early and ended up being one of the only people there. They were remodeling their patio area which looked great. It was a beautiful day outside and the gentleman who helped us out was great company. He was very knowledgeable and gave us lots of tips to do while out in paso. My family and I went up to Paso this past weekend for my grandmas birthday and had a blast. We stumbled upon Sextant as it was just off the freeway of the air bnb we were staying in. The hospitality at Sextant was phenomenal and our wine expert Amy was super personable and genuine and didn't rush us at all. The wine was delicious and so was their cheese board (which was of their newer items they offered). We ended up taking a bottle of Merlot ,Cab, and a Syrah blend home. Interesting and beautiful tasting room with some lovely fixtures. The pourers were very knowledgeable and nice. Wine was okay, probably the Wheelhouse was my favorite. We didn't buy any because there was a large party of very loud people and with the concrete floors the sound was deafening. I will try to stop in again on the next trip up. read more
