Great experience from start to finish and could not recommend more highly. Very convenient location for public transit on Bart and Muni and the Union Square parking garage is only a few blocks away so quick walk over. The space is small and private so no worries about folks wandering by when you're getting your waxing done. This was especially important since I was getting some intimate areas done. Gil is such a chill and cool person. He explained everything along the way and really put me at ease, especially since this was my first time ever doing anything like this. It very quickly just felt like a pretty normal hair cut even though the hair being groomed was very different. Review over. * Gil does a great job at minimizing how painful the process is. He reminds me to take an aspirin or ibuprofen beforehand to take the edge off, ensures I'm properly hydrated, and continues to check-in regarding his technique to make certain that my discomfort is minimal. ** Gil does a fantastic job at minimizing the embarrassment factor. Let's face it, you don't come to a place like this because you want a classy gentleman's shave and a haircut, sitting in your Armani suit. You come here because you have back hair that makes people lobby that the census should be inclusive with a "wookie" category in 2013. You come here because somebody will be looking at your naughty parts and they want them to resemble an adult film star and not a neglected piece of shrubbery. So face the inevitable... if you want a part that doesn't see the light of day much to be professionally groomed, you're going to, at some point, have to show that part brazenly so that the aesthetician can do his job. Pull of your big-boy pants and get into the downward dog. Ain't nothing he hasn't seen before. *** Gil minimizes his overhead, charges very reasonably, and yet gives you professional grade service. You could have it done cheaper, but you may limp home before calling a dermatologist to get a skin graft replaced when some paraprofessional who's taken a 12 hour course takes three layers of epidermis off of your taint along with your short and curlies. As a first timer waxing downstairs I wasn't sure how things would go. I was, however, reassured by Gil's prompt responses and answers to the questions I had. Booked an appointment and went to see him. After introductions and explanations of how the process worked I disrobed and let him do his thing. I've previously waxed my back and the first time is always the worst. This was similar but the prep and aftercare helped take the sting out of it. Just a few seconds of discomfort was well worth the result. I'm about a week in and things are nice and clean down there. Beats the odd ingrown hair and inconvenience of shaving. This was my first time ever being waxed anywhere. What a great !experience. I had ALL the extra special sensitive areas done and I expected it to be painful but Gil was so skilled that not only didn't it hurt but I rather enjoyed it. In anticipation of the pain I had stopped to grab a mini bottle of tequila because I read somewhere it helps with the pain but when I got there he already an assortment of adult beverages available. I was nervous to wax again after a bad experience last year. I did some research and settled on Gil at SF Manscaping. Just after making my appointment Gil provided me with a pre-wax document. He told me the best way to prep for my appointment and asked me questions about my skin routine and general health. The location in the Financial District is a BIG DRAW form me. I can walk from BART or my office. I can pop in on my way home, at lunch or the middle of that day. They say location, location, location - Gil has the perfect location. From the moment I arrived, Gil was warm and welcoming. He talked me through the entire procedure and took time to tell me the type of wax he uses on different parts of the body and how he preps the skin for waxing. I had a business meeting scheduled shortly after my waxing and he kept an eye on the time and provided me with updates so I never had to worry about how much time I had left or if I would make it in time. After moving back to SF recently I was looking for a new waxer (because I will be semi-naked in public for a show in two days, not that you really care why). I've been to places in NYC and Portland, and Gil was by far the best esthetician I've been to for waxing services. It was the least painful waxing experience I've ever had. I barely felt anything, so I was a little skeptical if he was actually doing a thorough waxing; but sure enough my back, neck, and shoulders were super smooth, and there was almost no redness whatsoever, another first. He took the time to explain the difference between hard and soft wax and why he used one or the other on a particular area. He also talked to me about after-care exfoliation, which no one had ever done before. For the best possible service his prices were lower than the other places I considered, which made the appointment that much more worthwhile for the slight journey I had to take to his studio. The space is on the second floor of a building solely dedicated to hair, cosmetologists, and estheticians. It's a really nice area of the building, and Gil's studio was very clean and organized (which is something that becomes important after you've seen things like overflowing trash cans of waxing strips with chunks of someone else's hair covering them or foreign objects floating in the wax pot at other places I've been to). It's kind of awkward being exposed in front of a stranger who is going to be removing hair from your body, but the conversation during the procedure flowed easily and Gil is a really nice guy. I will definitely go back to him next time I will be unclothed in public, or if I ever get a date. read more
