The actual work performed seems to be fine. I believe there may be an ethical issue with this practice. I paid the initial consultation fee of $475, no problem. After the work I went for a follow up appointment to see if the work fixed the issue and if I could proceed with my next step of treatment. I was charged another $475 at this appointment as a consultation fee. When I questioned this fee as I'm mid treatment and already a patient. I was told that every appointment where surgery wasn't being performed I would need to pay this consultation fee. I have filed a complaint with the dental board. He followed up on both after my extraction and implant to see how I was doing. He is very polite and gentle. I am impressed that both surgeries gave me no pain whatsoever. After the implant recently, just for precautionary measure, I only took one ibuprofen, but I think I didn't need it. Dr Michael Chan is fantastic. I had a great experience with the extraction of an upper molar tooth. The procedure was complicated by the fact that I have hardware in my jaw from a previous jaw surgery and I had a deep infection, which precipitated the need for the extraction. The extraction and recovery went very smoothly. The staff in the office is also fantastic. I had a post-op scheduled by phone, but I requested to come in in person, and I was immediately accommodated. Can't say enough good things about this doctor and the entire practice and staff. Procedure was painful, processing was "too" fast, communication was offensively, costly, and unprofessionally inefficient. I have insurance, and I was recommended these specialists by my regular dentist many years ago, when they removed my wisdom tooth. It was a big, long rooted one, yet the entire procedure was painless. That was more than 10 years ago, so I went back to have another molar removed by the same doctor. I called them and was told that while they didn't work with any insurance anymore, they would bill my insurance directly and I would be reimbursed. Cool, right? The day of the surgery the assistant wanted to prepare the wrong tooth. I informed her that it was piece number 18, she insisted it was not, but the one on the opposite side. --Imagine that. After nursing and caring for an old molar for decades to preserve it, and while in pain, she didn't believe me. It took some time for them to figure it out. They blamed my dentist, yet I have the paper were my dentist of 20 + years clearly identified the piece. Who knows? Finally Doctor Brian Yang showed up and started the numbing. While we waited he reassured me that they will help me get reimbursed, and that if I had a problem I could contact them and have them assist me further. He also offer implant services for the future. It was taking a minute, I always take a while, I've been told. I doctor Yang grew impatient, so he went straight into the tooth with the needle and injected me. That caused a most excruciating pain. 5 minutes later the tooth was gone, and I was out the door. I healed fast, and in a few days I was eating pretty much normally, until about two weeks later I felt a bit of a sharp edge over the spot were the tooth was. It was not painful but bothersome. I received a reimbursement check from my insurance for 280 dollars of the 1000 dollars I was charged for the extraction. I called them and they just apologized. They explained that the insurance company decides how much they will cover based on my contract with them. They never told me that. About the tiny sharp piece I felt, they said it could be a piece of tooth left over, and that it was normal. Maybe it is. They offered to look at it. As you might guess I would not put myself under their care ever again. It is a shame that such an efficient doctor would forget that beyond his earnings he has a responsibility to maintain an ethical practice. Avoiding unnecessary pain is an integral part of their practice. They even offered laughing gas for 350 dollars. I'm glad I didn't take it, since the joke was on me. I had my molars removed by Dr. Chan. I paid extra to be put to sleep during the procedure. However, I woke up in the middle of the procedure. It was a very upsetting experience. I had 4 of my wisdom teeth removed by Dr Rittenbach back in August. I had been putting this procedure off for years mainly due to anxiety about the procedure itself. I am so glad that I was referred to SF Oral Surgery by my dentist because this place is truly a gem. The entire staff is so friendly and caring, from front desk to in the procedure room. Dr Rittenbach is an actual angel. She explained the procedure and aftercare in great detail and answered any questions I had. She also called me the day after my surgery to check in. I also called on the Sunday after my procedure because my pain was still really bad even with my prescribed meds, left a voicemail hoping to get a response on Monday but she called me back not even a few minutes later and sent a new prescription. ON A SUNDAY! You really can't find patient care like this anywhere else. They have a higher price than other places I got estimates from but you really get what you pay for (plus more). This place is amazing and their patients are in great hands. Would not hesitate to go back (if it was ever necessary) and will 1000% recommend to my friends/peers. I made an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Michael Chan in the beginning of this year. He was patient, kind and informative -- he explained how long the procedure would take and showed me an x-ray of my wisdom teeth (it was so 3D). I shared with him that I have a fear of needles and the thought of seeing blood makes me woozy! He recommended having IV sedation and I'm SO grateful he did. If you're scared of having an IV stuck in your arm for 1+ hrs (like me) -- they put some numbing spray so you don't feel the IV go in. Once the IV's in, you fall asleep instantly! Prior to surgery, they provide you with pre/post operative instructions for you the follow. The ladies at the front desk were also very attentive and willing to answer all your questions (even if they're repetitive). If you're looking for a place to get your wisdom teeth removed, I would definitely encourage to check this place out. 10/10!! read more

Had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed by Dr. Rittenbach, and my experience was very positive. From small things like the courtesy/kindness/transparency of the staff as well as Dr. Rittenbach during our consultation appointment, to the actual procedure itself + post-operative care--all of which went smoothly--I cannot recommend SF Oral Surgery enough. A bit about the procedure: I elected to do it under sedation. I was given a nasal cannula for O2 and then a numbing spray prior to an IV being placed. I woke up around an hour later mostly conscious but with no memories of the actual procedure which had finished. Dr. Rittenbach called me that same day, and went over post-op instructions and answered questions I had. You are given written instructions as well which are important to follow and informative (e.g. when swelling peaks, how to address pain/swelling/hygiene.) My personal course: lots of bleeding the first day which was controlled with gauze + pressure. Swelling peaked in the next 1-2 days -- think puffy cheeks, unable to close mouth comfortably. I may have cleaned too aggressively as I noticed some of my sutures came out with brushing/flossing. If you're worried, best to call/email them. I was 99% recovered a week later and exercising/eating solid foods; I will only need to irrigate my bottom sockets with a syringe (provided by the practice) until they fully heal and fill. Biggest tip: buy an ice/heat pack holder which wraps around your head for comfort in the first few days after surgery! read more

Let's start the story by letting everyone here know that I had gone too long without seeing a dentist let alone an oral surgeon for much needed dental work. For my entire life, I felt every cavity and root canal and vowed to maintain my teeth insofar I could forever and always avoid their offices. However, this one was infected and knew it needed to come out. I left a message in a panic for an emergency visit and they were the MOST accommodating and returned my call quickly. Before I knew it, I was in for a consultation and scheduled a procedure. Dr. Rittenbach and her team couldn't have been more patient, accommodating, relaxing and gracious during the procedure. They recommended sedation, of which I had never had, and I happily accepted. The only thing I remembered was walking belligerently to the car to go home, that was it! They have repeatedly refused to address my issue directly. When I *gently* brought up my concerns I was told I would get a call back from either the doctor I saw (Dr. Yang) or the business owner. Never heard back. I tried calling again, and was told that both refused to get on the phone to discuss my issue. I tried one last time, thoroughly frustrated at that point. They're dishonest and hiding from an unhappy patient -- but will gladly get on the phone with any new patient who wants to shell out money to their business!!! This approach speaks volumes. Bottom line: your health (and bank account) are important. If you're looking on Yelp for recommendations, do yourself a favor and get a recommendation on doctors from someone you REALLY trust, ideally another trusted doctor. The folks at SF Oral Surgery seem to have forgotten that they're supposed to be caregivers first, and business people second. They're a surgery mill. I was referred to Dr. Michael Chan by my dentist for an evaluation for multiple dental implants. My teeth were damaged when I was young & I've been steadily chipping away at all the work I needed done. When I called to make my consultation, the woman I spoke with was very detailed about the process & clear that while they were out of network, that they still work with my dental insurance. She told me they'd collect in full for the consult at my visit, do the insurance billing for me, & that my insurance would send me a refund check if I had out of network coverage. This seems pretty straightforward, but it looks like a lot of reviewers don't understand how insurance works. I grew up without a lot of money, so there is Zero way I'm going to do something potentially expensive without educating myself. I got my treatment plan from the Dr., (who was very kind and thorough), spoke with their finance person, & got a preauthorization started. They sent my procedure details to my insurance to figure out an estimate of how much money I'd be out of pocket. No big surprise, my insurance didn't do much, but I'm not cheaping out on getting things screwed into my head! My surgery was painless (except to my bank account), & everyone from the girls at the front desk, the assistants, & the doctor were super informative & empathetic. It really helps when you are anxious to know that your care is going to be top notch. Doctor Chan called to check on me after my surgery & the office sent pamphlets & videos about post op care in case I was too loopy to remember. They also went into detail with my ride, who was going to be taking care of me, as to what to expect and how to help. My recovery has been a breeze & now I'm just saving up for the next steps with my dentist. Amazing practice, with a team that seems to work like a family. Got recommended this place from my dentist, so I went to my consultation and got charged $600 which was covered partially by insurance. Received an estimate for the surgery and it came out to $5000, and they don't work with any insurance, so who knows how much you'll actually get back. Not a patient, but picked one up. It seems that their staff is pressured to be very rushed. Their out-patient explanations were so quickly covered that I, the one not on the anathetics, had trouble following them. They failed to mention before I agreed to pick up that the patient would need supervision after the procedure, which led to me not being able to make my own medical appointment as this key detail was disclosed after the surgery was completed. I believe that this group would benefit significantly from slowing down. Medical should not be an auto body assembly line, trying to move things as quickly along as possible. read more

Their estimates for my insurance were entirely wrong, they didn't bother to contact my insurance to get a realistic estimate, and now 3 months later they contact me (for the first time) to pay the difference! My daughter had four impacted wisdom teeth removed two days ago and is well on her way to recovery. Dr. Rittenbach was personable and readily answered questions. She followed up with a text in the evening after the surgery. Front desk staff was friendly and accommodating with scheduling. So why 3 stars? When I went to fill my daughter's prescriptions, I realized my 17 year old had been prescribed 20 opioid pills. Remarkably, there was absolutely no discussion of risks, proper use and proper disposal of these drugs. This approach seems ill informed at best. We did not even fill the prescription and my daughter has been fine with ibuprofen. If your child is having wisdom teeth extracted you may want to read the articles that are linked below. One of the most painless dentist experiences I have ever been through. After coming in for a consultation to have my wisdom teeth removed, Dr. Chan explained every option that you can go through, including not having surgery. I was easily convinced that I chose the right oral surgeon. The whole staff there is extremely friendly and helpful. The office and equipment itself looks very well kept and modern. The actual surgery itself took around an hour where I was knocked out from the anesthesia. Right after wards the assistant explained all the post-op advice and procedures I should take. Called with a referral for wisdom teeth extraction and had a fairly unpleasant experience. I have actually met with Dr. Michael Chan previously and found him to be very professional and nice, so it was unfortunate that when I was finally ready to schedule my extraction, I was met with such...odd behavior from the receptionist. First, she said she couldn't schedule me for a consultation for 2 months. I understand that schedules are booked, but this is a bit much for me to understand...for 2 months, there isn't a single slot available for a consult? Then, after not scheduling me for a consult, she tried to get me to book an appointment for the extraction itself. I didn't understand how she could schedule an extraction...but not a consult. Anyways. After making it clear that I work Thursdays and Fridays, she kept suggesting Thursday/Friday appointments...! I found it a bit rude to be honest and decided to end the call right then and there. It's unfortunate. William Chan actually did most of the wisdom teeth extractions in my family. After a sleepless night in excruciating pain, I lay awake at 7am looking online to find an oral surgeon who could see me same day, since I knew this wisdom tooth needed to come out asap. After a couple phone calls to offices where they couldn't see me for a day or so, I called SF Oral Surgery and I am incredibly thankful that I did. The entire process was super caring and professional. They got me in right away, did x-rays and an exam and then Dr. Rittenbach told me the larger source of the pain was coming from the infected gum around the partially impacted tooth. Even though I knew the tooth would still need to go, I have a huge, mandatory week-long event next week and was concerned that I wouldn't be healed enough after the surgery, and so we discussed the idea of taking antibiotics to clear up the infection (and most likely the pain) and then waiting until after my event for the extraction. There was zero pressure either way, and she and her staff continued to give me all the details so I could make the best, informed decision possible. I decided to get the tooth out, figuring I'm in good health and should heal quickly. I opted for local anesthetic and she and her assistant walked me through things as they were happening. Not a fun process, but it went smoothly, and I was given very detailed after-care instructions. Still, I had to phone the office several times over the course of the afternoon with questions as they arose, and each time they were only too glad to give me thorough answers, and I never felt like a nuisance calling repeatedly. That evening, Dr Rittenbach herself gave me a call to check in and see how I was feeling and answer any further questions, which I greatly appreciated. I will see her to follow up next week. The office itself is clean and state-of-the art. They thoroughly explained the breakdown of charges, and while it's hard to say how their pricing compares, it was about what I expected and less than another office I had spoken with earlier in my search. I had three successful implants done over the past couple of years by Dr. Rittenbach and her staff. So, what distinguish her from other extremely competent oral surgeons, you may ask. In my opinion, it is the humanity behind the professionalism. For me what stood out was that she took charge of issues that could be considered "not my job." Specifically, I had an extraction of a broken molar that was performed by my general dentist. This broken tooth was next to a tooth implant that Dr. Rittenbach successfully performed. During a regular checkup of the tooth implant, she noticed that there were some issues in the newly extracted area. She scheduled for me to come in so that she could take care of it. I was referred to Michael Chan by another dentist, and scheduled a consultation to discuss wisdom teeth removal. When making the appointment, I specifically asked the cost of the consultation as I felt the consultation/surgery wasn't necessary, and was quoted a reasonable price - hence following through. At the end of the consultation, I was charged more than three times the amount originally quoted. After getting another opinion, I deem the surgery unnecessary, and felt that this instance was nothing more than dental surgeries partnering up to increase profits. If I do need surgery down the line, I won't be going here. That said, the office was a very clean and pleasant environment, and all the personnel were welcoming and friendly. Amazing experience, couldn't recommend enough. After years of dental anxiety the whole team was so nice and informative and got me in for an exam the next day and was able to fulfill the procedure that same day.! This is all based upon my personal EXT experience. The good: - Front desk staff and dental assistants that I encountered during my time there were nice. - The oral surgeon who did my extractions was Dr. Michael Chan and he made me feel like I was in good hands. He has a calm, professional and just an all around pleasant demeanor. - Did not feel like I was being talked down to. Last thing I want is someone who just because they have a DDS or MD after their name, that somehow justifies that they know so much more than you and are better than you and as such, talks to you like you're a little kid. You won't get treated like that here. - Upon asking several faculty and staff at the dental school in regards to what they remember about this doctor (those who were around during the time Dr. Chan was getting his degree in dentistry), they said nothing but positives about him as a former dental student. This was exactly what I wanted to hear. - IV Anesthesia - are you kidding me? I would not have even done this surgery if I was only going to have just local anesthesia. I didn't want to hear any cracking/crunching of my impacted wisdom teeth while they were being pulled out. Heck no. Here is how and what I remember of my first time being under you, IV Anesthesia: In the midst of stuff being wrapped around my arm, leg, pulse being monitored, etc. and right before they were going to administer you: Me: "About how long is this going to take for it to work?" Dr. Chan: "A minute." Me: "Oh, okay." But in my mind, I said to myself, "Hmmm, can't be THAT fast, we'll see about tha. . . . " And that was quite frankly the last thought I had, and then I was out. This "twilight anesthesia" worked like a charm;-) I did open my eyes during the procedure once and saw a blur of green moving (the color of the doctor or his assistant's scrubs), but couldn't keep my eyes open for more than two seconds. Also, I distinctly remember feeling either the material they use for the dissolvable sutures (or something) brush against my upper right cheek. Didn't feel anything going on in my mouth at all, due to the local. - Vicodin - I took you everyday for six days and I had a feeling I was getting addicted to you towards the end. But I love Pugs, not drugs. - Dr. Chan called the same night of the surgery to check up on me, which was very thoughtful. However, as much as I wanted to let him know how things were going, I was not able to answer since the local anesthesia had completely worn off about four hours later and for me, it was rather uncomfortable and painful to even talk then. So I was left a message stating that if I had any problems, to please call back. - Clear post-op instructions printed out and also explained to you thoroughly, in advance. - A plastic bag filled with enough gauze provided to control the bleeding, ice packs, applesauce and a syringe to clean/irrigate the lower extraction sites. The bad: - Prices are a bit high - even with dental insurance from working full time, I was shocked when I was first told how much I would have to pay out of pocket. I kept reminding myself that it is after all, surgery. Part of the reason was due to costs associated with the IV anesthesia. I expressed my love of this above, but I hate you at the same time, IV anesthesia, because you're so damn expensive. - Two days after I finished my antibiotics, developed a rash all over my upper body from the prescribed Amoxicillin medication;-( I did not expect this at all, as I previously had never gotten a reaction from taking any antibiotics. Notified them about this and after a brief conversation was ultimately told by the person who answered that if it gets worse, to call 911. After all that's been said and done, the good clearly appears to outnumber the bad. All in all, the three visits in total I had made with my oral surgeon were positive. If I could have done anything differently, I would have had these extractions done while still in high school. So if you're young and are thinking about doing this now or putting it off later in your life - trust me, do it now, for sure. The truth is that it (the pain) gets worse as you get older and the surgery becomes more complicated and the healing takes longer. This entire experience will be one I'll never forget. Post-op recovery, in particular, is quite miserable, especially the first week, but as with any surgical procedure, remember that everyone reacts and recovers differently so some will have it easier/harder than others. I had my wisdom teeth taken out December 2009, and I remember it clearly. The worst part about it all was not the procedure itself, but the insertion of the IV. I am not afraid of needles because I have gotten my ears pierced many times and have tattoo, but the idea of a needle under my skin and staying there is one of the most nauseating and fearful things to me. For that reason, I can never give blood and a blood test almost 10 years ago was traumatizing. They attempted to put the IV in my arm. I was freaking out. Almost yelling at the doctor and nurse, almost crying. They couldn't find my vein so they moved on to the back of my hand. Which was worse, because the area is less fatty and I know I would be able to feel the hard needle under my soft skin. My entire body stiffened, more yelling, more almost crying, but not for long, because they immediately push the anesthesia (extra $700) and knock me OUT. I know they were tired of my yelling, but I was genuinely freaked out! Before I knew it, I woke up, groggy, with four less teeth. Some swelling and no pain.. until a few nights later...and it was ALL pain. Vicodin wasn't working, I couldn't sleep, and it was just so painful. I called the doctor, thinking I had dry socket because I had sucked on a very delicious chicken wing a few nights before after my procedure, but he explained to me that I had a very impacted tooth that was close to a large nerve, so that was why my pain was more serious than normal. It went away over several days, and I am so glad that my wisdom teeth are out. The whole procedure was so worth it. So if you have wisdom teeth, don't wait until they are bothering you. I was referred to Dr Michael Chan by my dentist. Everyone from the front desk to others including Dr Chan are so personable and experienced. Dr Chan is so professional and has such calming way about him. Everything is thoroughly explained. It still amazes me that after I had a molar removed ( first step in my implant) that I did not experience any pain or aching. I had my wisdom teeth removed about nine hours ago. Although I was terrified, it went swell. And I mean, shaking in my boots, hyperventilating, frizz-eek-ing out scared. Dr. Chan (the younger, I understand that there are two) has a great chair side manner. He just makes you feel more relaxed. I was so comfortable after talking to him, it was truly impressive. Because I was expecting this to be the most traumatic event of my adult life. And you know, it wasn't bad. I mean, my jaw aches and little and eating is a deeply involved activity for me now, but compared to what I had been expecting, this is a waltz on a friggin white sand beach. Plus, he knocked off part of the original price when one tooth was easier to extract that he originally expected. I mean, who does that? Plus he called me in the evening to see how I was doing. Not a receptionist, but my actual doctor. Touches like that really mean a lot to me. read more

I am very glad I came here for my wisdom teeth removal. The office has a modern look, is very welcoming, and the service is kind and helpful. They provided me with information a week before the removal, then scheduled a follow up the week after the surgery. I felt very at ease under the care of these doctors, and so did my mom thanks to the help of their Cantonese translators. Though I was very uneasy because they didn't tell me when specifically to start eating regularly again, I realized that a lot of the procedures after the removal is up to you. There isn't a specific amount of days you wait until you can start chewing again, it's just whatever is comfortable for you. Same goes with the personal cleaning every day. I had my wisdom teeth removed here in 2010 and 2011. I chose to remove two teeth from the left first, so that I can at least chew a bit on one side (however, I wanted to be safe and decided not to chew food I was certain the hole had closed enough). As horrid as wisdom teeth removal can be, I think I had the best experience possible. I was under local anesthetics because it was cheaper, and honestly, the removal didn't sound too traumatic for me. I decided that I didn't need the full body anesthetics. The procedure took 15-30 minutes for 2 teeth removals, granted the wisdom teeth wasn't causing too much of an obstruction beforehand. There was no pain. I just felt the pressure of the doctor's hand pushing into my mouth, then I sort of felt a pop sensation as he cracked the tooth, and then he proceeded to remove pieces of the tooth. He was very informative throughout the procedure. They gave me a care package with apple sauce, a hot pack and a cold pack, gauze, a syringe, an info pamphlet, and the doctor's number in case I had any questions. I had no abnormal bleeding in the week that followed. The pain killers they prescribed for me worked like a charm once I began feeling the throbbing discomfort. Like I said, everything went as smooth as it could be. I didn't get any noticeable swelling because I have a big head (can I get a high five?!) The doctor called me personally to check up, and I was even able to call him as well when I had questions. By the time my insurance could pay for a 2nd procedure, I was actually fearless and was looking forward to being in the office again. The 2nd time around, they were just as wonderful. read more
