The bad news is that my car failed the first test. The good news was that it failed because the battery had been disconnected/replaced recently so the "fix" wouldn't cost anything. More on that later. I went back a few weeks later, they honored the free re-test and we passed. Both times they were pretty quick, and if you do need to pass some time there is the MacDonalds and the whole Potrero shopping center. So I recommend this place. Good price, but they only take cash with the Yelp discount. There is an ATM in the convenience store, with a $3.50 fee. Now, if you fail because your car's computer doesn't have a full "driving cycle" you'll need to let your car idle for over 5 minutes in the morning. Then you'll somehow need to slow down from 55 to less than 20 without using the brake. Safest place that I found to do this was the Sneath Lane southbound exit on 280. Stay to the left once you hit the exit. read more

20 minutes before closing I called to ask if they could squeeze me in for a smog check. They happily welcomed me in and promptly took care of the service. I noticed that a couple of other customers pulled in shortly after published closing hours and SF Star kindly took care of them as well. They only took 10 minutes to do my smog. The technician was very professional and polite. He also noticed my tires had some damage that needed to be repaired. He saw I'd gotten them from Costco and told me "they are probably under warranty, so you should take them to Costco and save some money". I did that and he was right! I had no idea! The guy who helped me was super friendly, professional, and took the time to explain why they couldn't proceed with the test. The guy I dropped my car off with was super nice and chill. He took my car and started on it right away. While he was working on it, I went to Safeway, just a block away.
