I came to Stress-Free Auto Care because my front brakes were grinding and making a scraping/whining noise at low speeds, especially when reversing. I was told OEM brakes would be installed so they would be quiet. The invoice did not identify the brake-pad or rotor brand/part numbers, and the noise never went away. When I returned for what I understood to be a warranty inspection, the mechanic did hear and acknowledge the noise. I also approved replacement of both front lower control arms and bushings, plus an alignment--about $2,400 total--after they recommended the work. The repair experience was incredibly poorly managed. I was told the job would take about four hours and expected the car back by end of day. Instead, I arrived to pick it up and the shop initially could not locate my car; after several minutes, I was told it had been moved to a sister shop and would not be ready until the next day. No one proactively called or texted me about this change, despite me clearly explaining that I needed the car back. I had to cancel a doctor's appointment in the East Bay because of the delay. The only remaining item was an OEM skid plate they were waiting on from the dealer, and I repeatedly offered to come back for that separately so they could return my car. Communication remained inconsistent, with multiple promised updates and ETAs missed without any outreach. They gave me a discount for the delay, which I appreciated. But I later discovered they had still charged me for the brake inspection, despite the visit being for a persistent noise following their own brake work and being presented as a warranty follow-up. They acknowledged the charge was a mistake and said a district manager was processing a refund. It has now been one month, and I still have not received it or a clear resolution. Worst of all, the original grinding/scraping noise is still present exactly as it was before I brought the car in and spent roughly $2,000. I understand that repair shops get busy and parts can be delayed. What I cannot accept is repeated missed promises, moving a customer's car off-site without notice, weeks of unresolved billing, and a brake-noise concern that remains unresolved after all of this. This location has professional and friendly staff, and a small waiting area complete with a screen showing service updates, snacks, coffee and a heater. I also appreciate that they pull your car out for you on Geary since it's such a busy street! The only thing that was odd was that there were several appointment times available so I chose 12pm and selected to wait at the shop. When I arrived at 12, they informed me that tech would now be leaving for lunch and not available to start until about 1. I'm not sure why they would list appointments for times that staff are not available; it would have made more sense for me to just bring it in at 1pm and wait for less time at the shop. read more

INCREDIBLE SERVICE AND TEAM! I have been looking for an auto shop for regular oil checks and inspections for my car that was reasonably priced and reliable. I came across Stress Free Auto Care on a google search and was immediately impressed with how user friendly their website was and transparent/fairly priced their services were (compared to dealerships charging $500+ for oil change, standard inspections). I had a few items I wanted to have looked at from the wiper blades to the USB port and the SFAC team communicated in advance of my appointment about what they think the best course of action would be. When it came time to getting the servicing done, I got regular text updates from the team on the progress of the review, a fully uploaded diagnostic that I could read through flagging areas of the car that were in good shape, may need work in the future, or needed immediate work done (with photo evidence, explanation and best recommended course of action). I approved changes virtually and they made the necessary updates. It was a cherry on top that I had my lyfts to and from the shop covered. I brought my car into Stress-Free Auto Care for a routine oil change and tire rotation. Instead, I was told I had an oil leak and that my front lower control arm bushings were torn and needed replacement. My car only had 37,000 miles on it, so I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being taken for a ride. The inspection report flagged the bushing issue in red, which pressured me into agreeing to the repair. I ended up spending a staggering $2,580. This was my first time visiting this shop--I usually go to the Subaru dealership--and I deeply regret the decision. Their claim of an oil leak was never confirmed. After some inspection, they said they'd need to remove more parts to investigate further. I declined. Then the receptionist acted like she was doing me a favor by charging me only half the inspection labor fee because they couldn't find the root cause. That felt manipulative. A few months later, my car started having battery issues, so I took it to my dealership. I brought along the paperwork from Stress-Free for reference. The dealership replaced my battery and, upon inspecting the supposed oil leak, said it looked more like someone had splashed oil on the engine rather than an actual leak. When I asked about the bushing replacement, they said it was unusual for a car with only 37k miles to need that repair--though city driving could cause wear, it was hard to say definitively. I also spoke with several male friends who are knowledgeable about cars. They all agreed that bushings typically don't need replacement until around 100k miles. That confirmed my suspicion: this shop may be taking advantage of customers, especially women, by recommending unnecessary repairs. I'm angry and disappointed. I'll never take my car anywhere but the dealership again. What stings the most is that I told them I was looking for a neighborhood shop to build a long-term relationship with. While they were changing the tires, they noticed some of our tire pressure monitoring sensors were low and while not in dire need of replacement, recommended we change it now to save on labor cost down the line since the wheels were already off. Made a last minute appointment for Sunday at 830am due to low tire pressure. I was pleasantly surprised by how fast they were. I loved that after I checked my car in and told them my issue they went right to work. The person doing the service was not only thorough but they did a free multi point inspection along with figuring out if I had a nail in my tire (which I did). From the time I got there which was right before 830 I was out before 9am. They are fast and efficient and would definitely come here again if I had any issues with my tires again!
