A friend and I decided to have a beach day and ride bikes along the Manhattan beach bike path. After bike riding we decided to stop at Shade for lunch. We went around 3 p.m during the week and they had a nice happy hour. All of the food was brought out in a beautiful presentation. We got a few things to share. My friend got a fruity martini which tasted really delicious. Our server was incredibly nice and everything came out on time. The GM Jacob stopped by our table and he was extremely welcoming and kind. We will Definitely be back! Overall great experience.

Great happy hour and very good service from Cynthia who was right on it. Big bday night for my wife with all her pals before NY tomorrow. Good pours and the Shade patio rocks. Best dish is crunchy rice with spicy tuna. Look out after happy hour because prices become MB prices. But in the end all good and all left happy!

My husband and I hosted our wedding at Shade in May. Alisha was the most amazing asset to the entire wedding planning process. The whole staff went above and beyond from the moment we arrived, ensuring our day was seamless and memorable. The hotel set up our penthouse room early with flowers, chocolates, and welcome note! They were attentive to every detail throughout the entire wedding planning process and helped coordinate additional things like printing odd items for us since we were out of state. They were even super accommodating when my credit card had fraud the night before the main event - I felt like they were more concerned about my experience than the bottom line of money. Overall, the value we got for the price of our wedding was a total steal! The location is perfect proximity to LAX, the cruise port, restaurants for rehearsal dinner, breakfast spots, grocery store, and the beach for an intimate & breathtaking first look. We highly recommend Shade and Alisha for all your event needs in Southern California.

    Mold in the bathtub

I got a room for Mother's Day to take a long bath. That didn't work out because the tub was disgusting! It appeared clean but the spout from the ceiling must have mold in it because anytime I ran the tub, mold would appear in the water. I've stayed at the Shade multiple time but I'm never going again because $800 for a moldy tub is unacceptable. Try one of the smaller hotels in Hermosa Beach for a better experience.

This hot tube needed an update. It was not very good.

I stayed here for the first time for 3 nights and 4 days. When I entered the room, I liked the spacious floor plan and the large hot tab. During my stay, the weather cold and the room temperature was set at 70°f, but it was cold room. I started pouring hot water into the hot tub but it took me over 30 minutes. After that, when I pressed the Jacuzzi switch, only one of the six worked and had no massage effect at all. The next day, when I asked about the hot tab at the reception desk on the first floor, they said it was just a hot tab because your room had not been updated yet. I was disappointed when I heard that. During my stay, I couldn't sleep because it was cold, so I switched the temperature to a heater and raised it to 75, but it didn't work at all at night. I caught a cold by the time I left the hotel.

I have wanted to stay here for years. When I lived in MB, I had stopped by for Brunch and cocktails, but had never stayed. So this visit, it was time to give Shade a try. Why? It's the best central location in downtown Manhattan Beach. You can walk to everything (restaurants, boutiques, beach, etc.) and there is no need for a car. Pulled up and valet was quick to greet us. Stepped inside and the front desk was friendly and offered glasses of sparkling wine. Room was clean and had all needed amenities. Large tub in the center of the room. Patio with chairs. Refrigerator with drinks (non-alcohol and alcohol). Iron, Hair Dryer, Hair Curler. Snacks. Kuerig machine for your coffee. Bottled water by the bed. Complimentary bottle of wine. My only issue with the room was it is outdated. I think they are starting to refurbish given the construction on the rooftop pool/bar. The dark wood/dark granite counters don't match the breezy beach style of MB. Grabbed breakfast both mornings at the restaurant in the lobby, zinc@shade; was provided $20/day vouchers. They serve bites/cocktails in the evening, but did close up early. I was visiting during the week, so maybe it's different on the weekends. Overall, service is 5 stars, but they need to refurbish the rooms for a 5 star overall experience.

    Look at the huge bathtub!

Consider this a 4 1/2 stars. Minus 1/2 star for expensive parking and no view. Not cheap but the newly renovated rooms are great. Nice LED color lighting though the interface is fussy and we had to have the facilities person come fix the flashing lights. Comfortable bed (first time sleeping on a Temur-Pedic mattress which was very comfortable.) Best feature here is the great big bathtub in a bathroom separated by sliding doors that can open up fully to create a really big room. Nice and clean for a quick getaway though a bit pricey.

The front desk staff were courteous at every step in the process (check in, questions throughout stay, following up on a few small issues that occurred) and at checkout. The valet staff were wonderful. They worked REALLY hard to ensure cars were ready in five minutes (often less than that) from when you requested it (via text) and the restaurant staff was very courtesy and the food was good - Valet was quick (I can't emphasize this enough). I was slightly annoyed that it was valet only (with a rental car I get a wary of others driving) however they were fast, courteous, and kept the car cool for me. Also, I recommend paying for valet when you book as I had the option to buy $25/night parking instead of $45/night parking where booking on the Hilton app. - Use of the hotels bicycles was a major highlight. I rented bikes twice. At the time of my stay (May 2026) there were only four bikes. They are first come first serve so I recommend renting in the morning. They had baskets and came with locks and helmets for a very affordable price. The staff (especially Ozzie) was great at getting them quickly rented out to us and showing us the features (they are one speed bikes so they are basic but perfect for cruising along the beach). - The room was spacious, clean, and had a mini bar fridge in it (with the option for a full fridge and access to a microwave near the business center). I appreciated the ability to tip the staff virtually with credit card in case you don't have cash. - The restaurant was convenient, service was good, and the food was good - Noise level wasn't bad, I had a room facing the main road and wished I would have booked a courtyard room, however the noise was barely noticeable and never a disruption (I come from a city where I am use to ambient noise) The not so great things - For late night gym goers, the gym is limited to 6am-10pm (probably because the gym is beside several guest rooms and they want to be courteous to those rooms). However the gym is well stocked small gym (three treadmills, a peloton, and several different racks of weights and areas for stretching) - The hallways smelt a bit dank when I first arrived (although the rooms themselves smelt very fresh) and I noticed several automated deodorizers in the hallways (likely to help with this) and staff were doing a comprehensive carpet cleaning when I checked out so I would expect this not to be the case in the future. - The indoor/outdoor pool was a bit dated and didn't leave much to be desired, but it's an option.. for those who don't prefer the beach and there were towels available.

If you're a Marriott member, you can use your Marriott points and get half off on Parking which is nice. The room was clean however it is a little bit small. Also, we had two different times that the electrical outlet plug in the bathroom stopped working so we could not use our straightener. We had to call maintenance to come fix two different times. As well as to fix a light in the hallway in our room, they fixed it. It was a nice day. It just needs a little tender, loving care on the property and I'm happy that the staff was very nice. I would probably return for the price, but I just hope that they can work on their electric electricity/outlet problem.

As a Gold Elite Bonvoy member, I really appreciated being able to check in early with no hassle--they accommodated it right away. The airport shuttle was seamless and showed up right on schedule (runs every 30 minutes), which made arrival super easy. Check-in was smooth and welcoming, and the whole place has that modern, upbeat Aloft vibe with a definite Cali twist. It was a little chilly during my stay, so I didn't get to enjoy the pool as much as I wanted, but the fire pit and lounge areas were awesome. My room was clean, comfortable, and the bed was amazing--slept better than I have in a while. What really made this stay stand out was the staff. Every interaction--from the first phone call to final checkout with Brenda--was warm, genuine, and made me feel like family. Huge shoutout to the whole team for making the experience memorable. The location is also a major plus. Tons of food options are within walking distance, and we were able to stroll over to Ralph's for snacks and groceries. My personal favorites: Starbucks right across the street and In-N-Out nearby. We Ubered to most places during our visit, and the location definitely helped keep costs down. It was also super easy for drivers to pick us up and drop us off in front of the hotel, which made getting around even smoother. Only minor concern: the gym had a bit of an odor that kept me from working out, but we got plenty of steps in during the trip, so no big deal. Overall, a pleasant stay and definitely a spot I'll plan to come back to!

The front desk staff was extremely friendly and professional, and the lobby looked recently updated, which I appreciated. The gym, pool, and outdoor eating areas were a vibe, and the grounds were beautiful and very family-friendly. Parking was plentiful, and the property felt safe, quiet, and somewhat tucked away. The food service staff stood out as well--very personable and well-organized. One team member even walked around to tables checking in with guests, which was a nice touch. The beach is about a 27-minute walk each way. I walked there and back and didn't find it bad at all. Checkout was easy, my late checkout request was honored, and the staff went out of their way to give me a list of tourist attractions in San Diego since I was heading there after checkout. Accessibility & Cons: The parking spaces were tight, especially near Building #3. The pathway between the parking lot and the sidewalk was uneven and steep, which isn't ideal for guests with mobility challenges. We booked a one-bedroom loft, and while the room itself was really nice and unique, all of the lofts are on the second floor and there are no elevators. Traveling with my mom, who has mobility limitations, made this a challenge. Also, the room had a noticeable odor--hard to describe, but similar to a basement smell--which I wasn't a fan of. Overall, this was a great stay and I would definitely recommend it and stay here again. I'd also recommend checking out the loft rooms--they're very cool--just be mindful of the accessibility limitations.

My room was in the Tower several stories up, this required a short walk to an elevator that was not initially easily found, and I'd suggest more intuitive signage, but it was found, and the tower design minimizes hall traffic outside of rooms. I was solo, and had no issue with the small bathroom counter, but I was also prepared for a cruise ship so I had a hanging shaving Kit so counter space needs were minimized. The room was standard, but I also packed a white noise generator so external noise would not be an issue. Bedding was sufficient, but I'd request on checkin for an additional blanket for both warmth and weight. The breakfast dinning room was large, and the morning offerings included Yogurts, Breads with a Toaster, Cereals and Milk, Coffee and Dispenser Juices, Cooked Liquid Eggs, and Breakfast Meats. The buffet was well maintained by staff, and though crowded as it opened, was less packed as the service progressed. There is also a microwave in this space. Stayed here for two weeks for business, so I got a pretty good feel for the hotel…read more Let's start with the good: Luis, David, and the breakfast crew were great. The front desk and breakfast area have had a nice remodel, and there's a nice courtyard with outdoor seating and a "heated" pool. The pool was still pretty cold, but I guess it was warmer than the regular temperature. Breakfast was also a nice touch. It was great not having to find somewhere to eat every morning. You could simply walk downstairs and have plenty of options to choose from. Definitely a convenient perk. Now, let's get into the thick of things. The hotel looks nice when you first walk in, but the rest of the property definitely needs a remodel. Room #1: The AC was leaking, leaving a wet spot on the floor when we walked in. During a California heatwave, the AC wasn't working. We also found hair in the bathtub and around the bathroom. We had placed the "Privacy Please" sign on the door, so housekeeping didn't clean the room, which is completely understandable. However, I called the front desk to request fresh towels, and they contacted housekeeping to send some up. When the housekeeper arrived, the woman with short gray hair seemed extremely annoyed, as if we were bothering her by asking for fresh towels while she was at work. Not exactly the welcoming attitude you want from housekeeping. Room #2: The safety door latch was nonexistent, the bathtub was clogged, and there were dust bunnies everywhere. Maintenance did a good job fixing the issues, so thank you to them. Unfortunately, the next day, after coming back from a long day of work, we found bugs on the bed and on the floor around the bed. I was horrified. So, we had to move... again. Ugh! The elevator can be tricky. Between room #2 and room#3 the elevator near our room wasn't working for a couple of days, so we had to use the other elevator, which had a few steps we had to navigate with our luggage. Super annoying. Room #3: We were moved to a room facing the pool, which I guess was supposed to be an "upgrade." It was definitely loud when the pool was being used, but I didn't mind too much since I specifically picked this hotel because it had a pool. The room itself was okay. However, this AC was leaking too. By this point, our stay was almost over, and I really didn't want to switch rooms again. They do have a bar, but the hours seemed random. Every time I needed a cocktail after all the room moving chaos, the bar was closed. It No big deal I just ordered something through food delivery. Overall, the location was good, and there are definitely some positives, especially the staff. But the hotel itself needs quite a bit of work and updating. Would I stay here again? Probably not. I'll spend a few extra dollars and stay somewhere else next time.

My first experience was not very impressive as the room was located right next to the lobby of the hotel, so I heard the sound of doors closing and opening frequently. And for some reason the room had a very dense oily scent - so the smell didn't add to a comfortable stay, although the front desk did what they could to alleviate the scent problem. However, this second stay, was a MUCH BETTER, clean and fresh so I was pleasantly surprised. I stayed in the studio room with a kitchenette, which is included in all of the rooms, and appreciated the amenities that they had available -- such as large refrigerator, microwave, kitchen supplies like frying pans, pots, dishes, mugs, and cups, utensils, as well as the use of a coffee maker and a toaster even! Truly a great opportunity to save money by cooking my own meals instead of eating out every day. Unlike other hotels around LAX, and I've been to four others, ESA operates differently -- they do not offer housekeeping unless you've stayed here for more than 14 days, as that is when they offer the housekeeping service fully. However, anytime I would need fresh towels. I could bring it to the lobby and they would exchange it with fresh ones. That would be the same for bedsheets as well. The downside of that is that with someone who have mobility disabilities and limited physical movements may have difficult time getting their housekeeping situation handled in a timely manner. They do offer extra housekeeping for price, and that would need to be discussed at the front desk. I believe it's additional $14 (?) per request. Every morning there is "breakfast" from 6:30 AM until 9:30 AM and the breakfast includes prepackaged muffins, snack bars, coffee - as well as flavored and plain oatmeal, coffee mixes, and hot chocolate. There is also a laundry facility on site, located right behind the lobby, and each load is five dollars and dryer is also preset at five dollars for 60 minutes. You can use coins or app from CSC laundry services. There's also a snack machine and a drink vending machine located inside the laundry room as well. There are four Washers and five dryers available, and the app will tell you how many minutes left on your wash and dry. The washer locks upon a payment, so you can leave your watch there for the duration which is about 43 minutes and for dryer there's no lock on it but it seems safe enough to leave it there until it finishes to pick up your laundry. Parking is paid through the front desk and it's a self-parking daily rate of $17. This particular ESA location is literally within minutes walking distance from Ralph's supermarket, which makes your grocery shopping very convenient. If you're located in the front of the property next to the lobby - Building A - then you would have to go towards the back and if you're in building B or C then you will see Ralph's Supermarket near where you're staying. There is a gate that separates the ESA and Ralphs; however, you'll see that there is an opening towards Ralph's. Ralph's is open 24 hours. Be aware that even though smoking is not allowed on the property within near distance to doors as per Los Angeles law, some of the hotel guests are not going to comply and possibly may smoke nearby the room. So if there are any problems, you should just let the office know. This also goes for people who smoke cannabis as well because that scent is recognizable around the property, though not very common. Also keep in mind that though walls and the floors are not very thick so you may hear the upstairs neighbor moving furniture or playing music. Service at the front desk is friendly, though at times they may be circling the property so they may not be available right away or maybe at the back office in a meeting so you could call them from a phone box outside of the lobby (Dial '0' for the Office) for assistance. They are short staffed with housekeeping at times so if you are patient, they're more than happy to be attentive to help your needs. Compared to other hotel, you can get some good rates if you look at their website or look for their sales throughout the year for reduced rates. However, you're getting a step up motel service experience with a full kitchenette and amenities that are not available in other hotels. Please be kind to your service workers, be mindful of your neighbors (as some are long-term guests) and you may find the property quiet and restful.

Don't stay here, don't let friends stay here, don't even go into the parking lot. On 1/31/26 I…read morevisited a friend who was working on their AC. He went to move the drapes and a heroin needle was hidden in the drapes. The place is a pig sty. But it gets better, he went to the front desk with his bloody finger and they would do nothing about it. Not one thing. They told him to come back on Monday. They know their place is used as a shooting gallery, all locals do, but he had a job to do and is not a local. He has been forced with no help to get to a hospital, that will cost, and get this looked at. He could have been infected with all kinds of stuff, including, HIV, AIDS, Hepatitis or whatever else is running around. Their reaction to this event is appalling. This could have been your child and a lot of unknowing people stay there because it is close to LAX. They don't care at all. They know all about their junkies that get a room, bring up a bunch of friends and stay a few days. Meth is also used which is a health hazard. It was room 355. And of course I have called the Health Department. They need to be out of business, it is a franchise with clearly no oversight. Run.
