So, it was a fortune, a FORTUNE to stay here for one night plus the parking and resort fee they charge, just a lot. With that being said it is an absolutely beautiful hotel, for certain people with certain tastes and styles, honestly it wasn't for me. First off, they offered a welcome margarita, which is a nice gesture and takes away the blow of the bill I guess, if you drink alcohol, which I don't. I would have gone for a snack but they didn't offer. They told me that the resort fee allows you a few special things: one was to get a discount for Equinox while you're in town. I laughed when they told me that because I'm on vacation and while I'm all about fitness, I'm not about to go to Equinox and workout, plus I was only here one night passing by. They also said to go to one of "their" restaurants in town and tell them that you are staying at the Shade Hotel and they will take care of me. I thought that was really nice. The third perk to this resort fee was that you got a credit at the bar it was $20 towards food or drink. I was told that if I don't use the credit at the restaurant or bar that they will put that money towards my bill and credit me at the end. I'll touch on that later. I walk into my room and I thought I was going to have a seizure or that a migraine would come on soon because they had these hideous neon blue lights bordering the bar in the room and the bed. I thought it was so tacky and awful like I was in Vegas or even better Atlantic City. The room was absolutely enormous and I had a balcony but these lights were so bright and blinding I knew there was no way this was going to fly for the night. I went downstairs and the guy explained to me how I could dim them. Baby, I don't want dim I want off. Luckily when I got back up to the room I was able to dial them completely off. The room got much better at the point except for the jacuzzi tub smack dab in the middle of the room, next to my bed, literally. It was so odd. SO odd. The bathroom vanity was open concept, jacuzzi tub then my bed. It was not for me. They had these door things you could use to close the area off, but I just have one question, why? Why was this an idea that came to fruition? The toilet had a separate area with a door. I don't know, it was weird to me. Also, alcohol everywhere in the room, bottles upon bottles. Snacks for purchase, drinks in the fridge for purchase, the usual. The amount of alcohol was shocking to me though. The TV was pretty small and awkwardly position a bit from the bed, the bed was comfy enough, had a good night sleep. Woke up the next morning and upon check out just double checked to make sure that the $20 would be credited to my room if I didn't use it at the bar and they said that's not a thing and they don't do that. So I'm not sure what the guy was talking about the night before. Anyways, I didn't want anything to drink so I grabbed two orders of fruit to go. This fruit, lol. It was wildly expensive for what I got I'll leave it at that. Some melon, berries, it was disappointing. Very loud at night I will say that they had the music going late, which I'm not ever going to complain about but I'm just mentioning it. What else what else. Perfect location, walking distance to everything, extremely convenient. Try it you may love it! Still think it deserves a good review because it was very clean, that's number one priority in a hotel for me. read more

A friend and I decided to have a beach day and ride bikes along the Manhattan beach bike path. After bike riding we decided to stop at Shade for lunch. We went around 3 p.m during the week and they had a nice happy hour. All of the food was brought out in a beautiful presentation. We got a few things to share. My friend got a fruity martini which tasted really delicious. Our server was incredibly nice and everything came out on time. The GM Jacob stopped by our table and he was extremely welcoming and kind. We will Definitely be back! Overall great experience. read more

The hotel may be fine but the restaurant was terrible for Mother's Day Brunch. Their selection gets less and less each year and the service is horrible. Then they charge a 20% automatic tip for a buffet! Never going back there for anything let alone something that should be straight forward as a Mother's Day brunch. read more

We trusted this hotel's valet with our car for a quick lunch in MB, only to discover upon return it was damaged while in their possession. Reporting the damage turned into a long drawn-out ordeal which lasted over a month. After all that, the hotel denied any responsibility for what happened. It was extremely frustrating to deal with a business that dragged its feet and ultimately refused to own up to a problem that happened on their watch. I wouldn't recommend using their valet service, and management handled this situation very poorly. If I could give them zero stars, I would. My husband and I hosted our wedding at Shade in May. Alisha was the most amazing asset to the entire wedding planning process. The whole staff went above and beyond from the moment we arrived, ensuring our day was seamless and memorable. The hotel set up our penthouse room early with flowers, chocolates, and welcome note! They were attentive to every detail throughout the entire wedding planning process and helped coordinate additional things like printing odd items for us since we were out of state. They were even super accommodating when my credit card had fraud the night before the main event - I felt like they were more concerned about my experience than the bottom line of money. Overall, the value we got for the price of our wedding was a total steal! The location is perfect proximity to LAX, the cruise port, restaurants for rehearsal dinner, breakfast spots, grocery store, and the beach for an intimate & breathtaking first look. Overall wonderful stay for me and my cat, I did not want to leave!! The room was amazing, I believe we had the spa room/King bed with a huge bathtub with water coming from ceiling. I took baths and watched tv every night. The Tempurpedic cloud bed was insanely comfortable. Being pet- friendly was a wonderful surprise. I needed a place to stay while my house is under repair so needed to bring my cat. He is very clean, well behaved and we travel with disposable litter boxes and mats so when we leave, there was no trace of an animal. The tile flooring and carpet are also stain proof for easy clean up if necessary. I got a deal on a one the travel broker sites and believe it might have been such a good deal because I made reservations to check in middle of night but I don't know. Staff is lovely. read more

The hotel is in a fabulous location and is very modern and pretty. The backlighting is really neat and it's a short walk to the center of everything. If you're staying here for the large tub and like hot baths this is not the one. It takes over an hour for the tub to fill up and the water is only barely warm once it falls from the ceiling into the tub. (Not to mention water splashes in a two foot radius surrounding the tub.) The bed was comfy and the pool on the rooftop is small but a nice place to hang out. The bar/restaurant is really great as well. read more

I got a room for Mother's Day to take a long bath. That didn't work out because the tub was disgusting! It appeared clean but the spout from the ceiling must have mold in it because anytime I ran the tub, mold would appear in the water. I've stayed at the Shade multiple time but I'm never going again because $800 for a moldy tub is unacceptable. Try one of the smaller hotels in Hermosa Beach for a better experience. read more

I stayed here for the first time for 3 nights and 4 days. When I entered the room, I liked the spacious floor plan and the large hot tab. During my stay, the weather cold and the room temperature was set at 70°f, but it was cold room. I started pouring hot water into the hot tub but it took me over 30 minutes. After that, when I pressed the Jacuzzi switch, only one of the six worked and had no massage effect at all. The next day, when I asked about the hot tab at the reception desk on the first floor, they said it was just a hot tab because your room had not been updated yet. I was disappointed when I heard that. During my stay, I couldn't sleep because it was cold, so I switched the temperature to a heater and raised it to 75, but it didn't work at all at night. I caught a cold by the time I left the hotel. read more

I have wanted to stay here for years. When I lived in MB, I had stopped by for Brunch and cocktails, but had never stayed. So this visit, it was time to give Shade a try. Why? It's the best central location in downtown Manhattan Beach. You can walk to everything (restaurants, boutiques, beach, etc.) and there is no need for a car. Pulled up and valet was quick to greet us. Stepped inside and the front desk was friendly and offered glasses of sparkling wine. Room was clean and had all needed amenities. Large tub in the center of the room. Patio with chairs. Refrigerator with drinks (non-alcohol and alcohol). Iron, Hair Dryer, Hair Curler. Snacks. Kuerig machine for your coffee. Bottled water by the bed. Complimentary bottle of wine. My only issue with the room was it is outdated. I think they are starting to refurbish given the construction on the rooftop pool/bar. The dark wood/dark granite counters don't match the breezy beach style of MB. Grabbed breakfast both mornings at the restaurant in the lobby, zinc@shade; was provided $20/day vouchers. They serve bites/cocktails in the evening, but did close up early. I was visiting during the week, so maybe it's different on the weekends. Overall, service is 5 stars, but they need to refurbish the rooms for a 5 star overall experience. read more

Consider this a 4 1/2 stars. Minus 1/2 star for expensive parking and no view. Not cheap but the newly renovated rooms are great. Nice LED color lighting though the interface is fussy and we had to have the facilities person come fix the flashing lights. Comfortable bed (first time sleeping on a Temur-Pedic mattress which was very comfortable.) Best feature here is the great big bathtub in a bathroom separated by sliding doors that can open up fully to create a really big room. Nice and clean for a quick getaway though a bit pricey. read more

We attended an afternoon event for a friend here and quite enjoyed it. We sat at the outdoor patio area which had a beautiful succulent wall focal point. The Mediterranean style buffet was light and tasty and the servers were attentive about clearing the tables. The area was set up in a way so it didn't feel cramped even with around 55+ people. No ocean view at this location. Valet parking was available but pricey so we opted for the nearby public parking lot. read more

We are back! And great news the food was on par at this restaurant speaking from the brunch point of view. Everything was delicious from the chicken Caesar to the croissant breakfast sandwich. The pool is really a small spa on the roof if you care about that. I love the free use of bikes.. it makes for a great bike ride down the beach. Front desk was on the phone mainly when we checked in except the lovely girl who helped us with the bikes the next day. We enjoyed the room but had a hard time figuring out the buttons and all until we were about to leave. Overall a nice staycation. We didn't get the $50 California credit because we booked through a 3rd party. This was told differently when we checked in so wish they would've honored that. read more

Had a great stay-cation away from home and away from loud neighborhood fireworks! Check in was smooth and easy I left my glasses at the front desk and the hotel attendant met us upstairs right before I hit my room with my Gucci shades I was happy about that! Clean room bathtub was amazing the view out the room was nice no balcony! The reason for the three stars: the pool was small and it was dirty it was a large jacuzzi pool turn the jets on and it was algae and hair around the edges of the pool I immediately got out and use the poolside shower it was rooftop no view just say we tried to make the most of it ending this review watch for secret hotel fees but order the BBQ bacon wrapped shrimp Omg YUMMM I will only go to the bar area to order the shrimp lol read more

I used to drive by this contemporary boutique hotel every day on my way to work when I lived down the road in Redondo Beach... Never once occurred to me I might stay there someday. Then I moved away and had to take a trip back to the area for some work. I wanted to stay somewhere close to El Segundo, as that's where I had some work to do, and close to Redondo Beach, our former home. Shade Hotel in Manhattan Beach was perfectly located for that! They're right in the heart of town, just a short walk from the pier and the beach. Only ended up having to go to the office in El Segundo once, which is great because it meant more time here! I've stayed in dozens of hotels, good ones and... um... not-so-good ones... Shade was MORE than just one of the good ones. Few hotels I've stayed in come close to matching the hospitality we experienced here. The service was above-and-beyond friendly. FREE bike rentals for guests. Credits to get food or drinks at the excellent restaurant and bar. Very nice rooms with a big hot tub that has chromatherapy lighting. Pseudoscience or not, it's just cool. Definitely enjoyed our time here, happy to have chosen it, and would not hesitate to return. read more

First let me start by saying I am not reviewing the hotel itself but the restaurant that is part of the hotel. We went there for breakfast and found that the food was less than tasty. Presentation was excellent but over all taste was not good. The potatoes were somewhat cold and hard as if they had been sitting out for a while. The Huevos Rancheros were also cold once again as if they had been cooked and left sitting for a while before they were served and the taste not so good. The pancakes were warmer but a litlle rubbery. Needless to say I did not enjoy my breakfast there very much. Its really a shame because this restaurant came highly recommended by my daughter who frequented this place often prior to covid. read more

October 2024 at Shade for a decadal birthday party of 49 guests. Utilized the Terrace and part of the Zinc bar. Full service dinner and drinks. Event manager and planner Alisha Johnson. Lovely space, good food and drinks, and terrific ambience. The planning process with Alisha was thorough, and clearly we were working with a thoughtful, seasoned pro. The night of the party she came up with some nice value-added touches, and during the party she was highly attentive to details.
