I had some repairs done on my truck they finished and I paid them, I then found out that the work was covered by a General Motors repair bulletin and would have cost me nothing. I asked them about it and they told me they work on a lot of vehicles and can't check them all. It is a large facility with a lot of employees, I don't think I should have to ask them to check for repair bulletins, I asked for a credit and they refused , they told me they would help get reimbursed, i thought they should take care of it. I am now trying to get reimbursed , I did have some more work to be done by them, an had have the dealer quote me on the work to be done and they were $600 cheaper, so I will be going to the dealer and not to them. So not only failing to check on my truck before working on it, there quote for additional work was way over the dealer quote. Not going back. read more

Today we received real family-type customer service from Shadetree Automotive in Layton. We live in California, but our daughter opted for a college program in Utah. I had always maintained and repaired all the family's Hondas myself. For years I had watched helpful automotive videos uploaded by Shadetree (thanks Tom and Brian), never knowing where they were located. How lucky I felt when it was time for maintenance on my daughter's Honda and learned her college was near Shadetree. Without going into detail, Russ got her vehicle serviced working around her classes and work schedule. Everyone there was friendly and made her comfortable; they communicated everything about the vehicle to her. My driver's side window slipped out of its track, and I couldn't raise or lower it. I tried to fix it myself, but after about 10 minutes I realized I couldn't do anything to fix it. I was able to pull the window off the vehicle and miraculously I didn't cause any damage to the glass itself. I went to Shadetree Automotive in East Layton (off highway 193) and asked if they could fix it. The gentleman I spoke with said they most likely could and offered to set up an appointment for me. I asked approximately how much it would cost to fix and he said that they needed to run a full vehicle diagnostic inspection for $190 first. I questioned the cost and asked if that was to check the window and he said no, the $190 was for the full vehicle diagnostic inspection only, and that the cost to fix the window would be an additional cost. I said that I only needed the window fixed and didn't need a full vehicle diagnostic inspection because my vehicle was mechanically sound. He said it was company policy to do the full vehicle diagnostic inspection before any work could be performed. I asked again if they could just fix my window and he again said not before I paid the $190 for the full vehicle diagnostic inspection first. I said thank you for your time and left. I had gone to Shadetree only because I wanted to support my local Layton City business community but instead ended up taking my business to another automotive shop outside of town. This other business was able to take care of me on the spot, removing my door panel, checking the window motor regulator, as well as inspecting the tracks, guides, and clips. Finding no damage, the mechanic reseated the window, reattached the door panel, and tested it to make sure it was able to raise and lower itself without issue. I was out of there 45 minutes later with my window completely fixed. In addition, his work included a warranty and full guarantee, and the total cost was just under $100. I will never go to Shadetree again, nor will I recommend Shadetree to my family, friends, neighbors, or co-workers. read more

My 70 year old Aunt went in for a flat tire. They charged her $40 for putting air in a tire. Also wanted to charge her for a diagnostic that she didn't ask for. How could a company charge for putting air in a tire? I will be complaining to somebody on Monday. read more

Have always had great experiences with Shadetree. We drive old cars, they require work, no big deal. BUT I recently took my 2008 Jetta in because when I recharged the coolant it was leaking out. Shadetree told my husband it needed a new condenser, $1,500. Based on our previous experiences with Shadetree we went along with it. Got it home, recharged the AC again and within 24 hrs the coolant leaked out, same as before. Take it back the next week to be told the original technician missed some things, sorry, $1,000 to fix what should've been fixed originally. I don't have $2,500 for AC, so now I have no AC and no $1,500. Update: Went to pick up the Jetta and my husband was told a second leak must've coincidentally sprung up. I am unsure what was done to repair the first leak I reported. Second update: New text from Shadetree has a new quote of $669, they'll pay for the cabin filter, and they'll continue to look for a cheaper condenser. But the condenser is the part they said they already replaced, so was their original $1500 condenser bad? Why does it need to be replaced again? Really doing the work to put Shade in Shadetree today. read more

This was my second time using Shadetree. It's usually not a good time when you're car needs a repair, so I understand why some customers may leave dissatisfied. It took them about a week to get to my Subaru Impreza, which was a bit long, but it worked for my situation. They always send you a digital inspection report that is simple to understand, including pictures and video. DJ was my technician and he helped my through the repair process and gave me plenty of options (i.e. price points) for the major repairs. He was direct and to the point, and I appreciated the time he took to answer my amateur questions. From my approval of the service to completion was less than a week, and that included an entire engine replacement. The final cost ended up being about 11% more than I was quoted, which is the only reason I gave them less than 5 stars. Paying the invoice was easy to do via an itemized digital invoice. So far, my 2018 Impreza is driving like a dream. On a slight side note, I've noticed that Shadetree has had some sort of "Pride Month" slide on their digital marquee. As a customer who is a member of the LGBTQ+ Community, this is something that I notice and it makes me feel more comfortable interacting with them and giving them my business. By no means does an auto repair shop need to go out of their way to do that, but it definitely means a lot to see a local business support their customers like that. If you are in a tight spot with a car that's broken down on the side of the highway in Davis county (did I mention they'll have your car towed to their shop for free?), and you don't already have a preferred repair shop, I'd highly recommend giving Shadetree a call. read more

I really love these guys. They are my regular mechanic because every time they have my car they check everything and keep a log so we know what shape everything is in and what needs to be done. My husband keeps insisting we bring our vehicles here but I swear after today we'll never go back. I have no problem with a business making money but not when they are fixing things that don't need to be fixed. They told us that my daughters car needed 4 brake roters but that some of the pads were at about half life and others needed to be replaced. He told them ok so they replaced everything and charged us a fortune. Those pads that were at half life could have lasted for several more months. Every time we take a vehicle there, they come up with a list of about $2000 worth of repairs that need to be done and our cars are only a few years old! read more

Sorry review so long! But please read all of it! I looked all over Yelp and other sites to find an auto repair shop. I called Shadetree Automotive and spoke with Bryan about my situation, and he was very pleasant. I told him my situation and said I needs my car towed and a ball joint repair. I received a phone call a few hours later from Russ (service writer) letting me know what was wrong with my car, which I knew it was the ball joint on passenger side. The first number he gave me was $1100+, which I did not believe. I asked him what all that included. He said that would be for a ball joint on passenger side, control arm and also the driver's side ball joint and control arm including an alignment plus labor. I was kind of in awe that he even mentioned the driver's side. Without telling him I had that ball-joint on driver's side replaced this past fall, so I know it is still good. As for the driver's side control arm maybe he thought it needed to replaced, which might thought replace all of it. Did not bother me too much he mentioned the driver side, but was not interested in getting that fixed, but kind of pushed that it did need to get fixed. I kind of had to tell him ... look it is an old car, and I just need the ball joint fix on the passenger side to be road worthy, and that's it. He also mentioned something about my cooling system, and some other things. I did appreciate him pointed these things out to me, but I am aware of many of those things, and it is a 15 year old car, so I know there are other problems that do need fixing. We talked over some figures I did not like, but decided I getting just the ball joint and control arm on passenger side done and accepted the price. Then they started on the work. I got a ride from them to pick my car up, which was nice. It was a pleasant ride talking with the driver (forgot your name ... sorry) and we did some small talk. I went in to pay for my repairs and went over the bill. It did not set to well with me still, but I accepted it. Went over and asked about parts and other things with Lisa the front manager. She was really nice. Russ came over and gave his $0.02 on the matter, and I accepted it. Russ made a comment I thought was condescending about how he felt like my car should not be driven without those repairs he suggested. I did not like that. I paid and left not happy with price, but accepted it and just wanted my car back. As I was opening the door I noticed that a big chunk of the foam from my seat was ripped about the size of a 6" sub. The seat is leather, but the front of the seat shows foam and flakes off little by little pieces, but never big chunks. I told Russ about it and showed him the damage. Then Russ told me, "that it did not matter." I told him it did matter! It is one thing to rip a little piece small flake by flake like it normal does with climbing in and out, but a piece the size of a 6" sub away from the seat is unacceptable! After I complained about it to Russ he kind of gave me an attitude and said they would see what they can do. I am more angry at his attitude than the actual damage that was done. I know the seat shows foam and is not in good shape. Why accept more damage? I would have been pleased if he would have just said sorry, and we will fix it to the best of our ability. The seat is falling apart, but doing more damage to it, and not accepting direct responsibility for it is unacceptable! Another person Tyler took the car back and applied some glue or something to fix the problem. He did a good job! After Tyler fixed the issue I spoke with Russ again about the issue and kind of still had a chip on his shoulder about the incident, but apologized for him saying what he said. Shadetree Automotive says it prides itself on "Customer Service", which I have to disagree. This is an issue many of you run into when pricing is talked about and "Customer Service", how true are they? Service writers and/or mechanics make it sound like they have great pricing, service, etc. but do they really? I did not see it in my experience. I feel like they are like any other mechanic shop you go to. They are nothing "special" or "different", especially when it comes to pricing or "Customer Service." They have there good points and there bad points. These are my feeling and experience with Shadetree Automotive, and hope that I did not bias you from going there, but it is possible you could have my kind of experience. Plus, the rude experience I had with Russ about my seat still does not sit well with me. *Update - 2/21/18 Met with Tom the owner of Shadetree Automotive. Very pleasant and nice guy to talk to. We discussed the above situation. Had a good conversation. Learned a lot of information about how they do business, and do not agree with some of the things. The 2 stars are really only for the seemingly good customer service over the phone and from the shuttle driver, everyone was friendly and nice, and they give you yummy cookies. But I wanted my car fixed at an affordable price, not cookies! They charged OVER $400 just to DIAGNOSE my car, without fixing a single thing. I thought maybe I could actually FIX my car for around $500. They find EVERY.LITTLE.THING wrong with your car and expect you to pay thousands of dollars to fix everything, even things you did not bring it in for. I only paid $3,000 for my car to begin with. Why would I pay $2,000 for repairs? And they made it seem like $2,000 was nothing, chump change. Back to my never ending search to find an honest, reputable car repair place that doesn't charge an arm and a leg or suggest repairs you really don't need. read more

Took my 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited in for a transmission fluid leak. My first experience was with Lisa on the phone, and she was very friendly and helpful. Russ took care of my service and did a great job keeping me informed of the status, as well as providing extra information regarding other recommended service items after doing a thorough inspection of the rest of the Jeep. Russ also informed me of the warranty offered by Valvoline. However, the best part of my experience was meeting Eric, a mechanic who also graciously served as my shuttle driver to/fro my house. That guy is awesome and has a terrific attitude. He was a pleasure to talk to, and I'm sure he's a great mechanic as well. I've been bringing vehicles to Shadetree for over 10 years now. I'll admit they don't always tell me what I want to hear but I they do tell me what I need to know. They are up front and go into detail about everything they see and do to my vehicles. They make sure that quality of parts and quality of work are high priorities and aren't afraid to get help from other sources when needed to make sure the job is done right. On top of all that the customer service to me is unmatched in the car repair industry. I've never been to another repair shop that offers a shuttle, loaner car, free towing, and fresh baked cookies. They always send thank you cards in the mail, ask for feedback, and from what I've seen do a good job of responding to feedback on places like Yelp. Because of the quality of service I understand that they aren't always going to be the cheapest but they have very fair pricing. It's always good to know that I have at least one car repair shop to go to that I can trust and rely on. read more

'Shady'-tree to me. The experience I had was very much a disappointment. The problem I experienced was not as much related to quality, but to bait and switch (or add on). I tried to get the place to give me an estimate for the work, they agreed that they could give me an estimate for the work to be performed, but kept holding out saying because they may find more they did not want to estimate what was initially going to be done. As much as I tried to say, if more is found, them lets cross that bridge if and when it is found, they refused. Another time, I tried to use the online estimate here at Yelp, which their site says they respond in about an hour. Well, days passed, the other competitors that Yelp sent the request for bid to all responded in their respective times, but not Shadetree. My experiences are a refusal to give a clear bid for known work to be done. read more

BEWARE!!! These guys either have no clue what they are doing or take short cuts that don't work. This place cost me $300 after we took our van there to get two simple tire leaks fixed. They used gummy plugs to fix the leaks that didn't work and we had to take them back several times and they still didn't fix the leaks. Finally we went to Discount tire who told us Shadetree fixed the leaks the lazy way and that the gummy plugs should only be used for 4 wheelers. Discount tire couldn't fix the leaks after Shadetree had done this and we ended up needing to buy two brand new tires costing us $300. Our tires were not worn enough to warrant replacement and those leaks could have been fixed for $20 if done properly. TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE!!! read more

I took my Honda Pilot here after purchasing it used from a dealership. They did a complete health inspection for only 50$ They found several issues, and luckily my car was still covered under a 7 day warranty at the car lot. I took it back to the car lot and had them address the issues. They gave me the run around and claimed to take care of the issues, needless to say they did not fix the major issues. I brought my car back to Shadetree where they checked my Pilot again to ensure that they did as they said, and they even did this at no cost to me. Shadetree saved me a lot of money, and went above and beyond to make sure that I was taken care of. They are friendly and helpful, and were very easy to work with. Their loner car was also a great addition, because being without a car in itself is an inconvenience. read more

Took my husband's car there because it wouldn't start at all, they fixed a module and after a couple months we were able to make the almost 1.5 hour drive to pick it up it started but couldn't shift correctly, lights didn't work, and the radio didn't turn off. They offered to look at it again after over a month they told us it's nothing they did and that it's a $3100 fix and we said no thanks since its only worth $4000, and that we'll pick it up. Went up this weekend to get it and the dashboard was tore apart still and wouldn't start so after paying them $1300 for a module and labor we are back to square one with it not running again, the car tore apart, and when it does run it is in worse shape than we took it to them. My husband called this morning to say that it wasn't running and was still tore apart when we picked it up. They said they no longer want us or our vehicles there. We weren't planning on taking our cars there again, but instead of trying to resolve the situation they acted very unprofessional, they're also threatening to see us in court, not sure for what since we paid our bill in full. Also the module they placed we learned they charged us at least $200 more then they should have for it. We wish we could have known we could have gotten the part for around $300-$500 instead of $700. read more

They changed my air conditioner in the spring. Over the summer it has been warmer. I took it back and they told me I need a new condenser for ~$350.00. Why was this not found earlier and I thought it was part of changing the air conditioning pack. I thought had finally found an honest and trust worthy repair shop - wrong. Terrible place. My boss and coworkers warned me about this place but I didn't listen. Went there for safety and emissions and tried to tell me one of the reasons I failed was a power steering leak. I called bs on em and they put it on the rack to check out. Turns out the the guy that called me was full of it. It was low on fluid so he failed me for that. Mechanic that did it even said it wasn't leaking. This place will try and rip you off at every chance. They know you need it to pass and they take advantage of you by making false claims about your vehicle. Do not trust them. read more

I have never been to a better place in Utah to service my car. My experience was amazing!! This was my first time ever going to Shadetree Automotive. After having many problems with our car and being frustrated with the current location that had it we gave Shadetree a Call. They picked our car up and the day after they called and informed us what the problem was and our option for fixing it. They explained the issues we were having so well that I understood what they were saying and I am not a car person. We had already been quoted at another location for what the costs would be to fix our car and we paid less than half, very fair with pricing. We also loved that they gave us a list of additional things that they recommended we fix and had prices listed. This made me feel like I actually paid for something with a diagnostic test. Everyone I spoke to on the phone was so nice and seemed so happy, never made me feel like a burden when calling. We actually never had to call to receive updates on our car because they always did which made me feel like we were extremely taken care of. To top it off they leave cookies in your car!!
