Friendly staff, great atmosphere, and absolutely delicious food!! Best catfish around and the hush puppies too!

This is a locals place so unless you know it's here.... Fellow campers mentioned it as it's quite close to the RV Park. I know you're supposed to eat catfish at a catfish house, but neither of us wanted fried catfish :). I'm here to tell you the alternative options are very tasty! Here's the setup- you are seated and they automatically bring you a bowl of coleslaw, baked beans, hush puppies, and a plate that has pickles and onions on it. This is for you to share, and they will keep refilling it as long as you empty it lol You then order what you want for your main off the list on the wall. I really can't eat fried food so I went with the salmon and it was cooked to perfection. I also had a side of steamed veggies which they serve with butter and some seasonings on the side so you can do what you want to do with it. Hubby was craving a steak and saw that they had a black Angus 10 ounce sirloin and so that is what he went with and he said it was absolutely fantastic. They have you cut into it to make sure it's perfect before they leave it with you. He also had an absolutely huge baked potato! I feel bad because we really couldn't eat all of this food, it's a lot! And for $57 this is a pretty darn good deal They do not serve alcohol, but you can get iced tea or sodas They have a person playing guitar and singing music, he was actually quite good! It's Saturday night and the place was busy but service was very friendly and efficient. I know this is well off the beaten path, but if you're in the area and you want a filling dinner, go for it. They are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and on Sunday it Looks like they have limited hours from 11:30 to 2:30p. There is a cash discount available but they do take Visa. read more

This was an interesting find. The food was good and the service was good. The restaurant is a little off the beaten path. If you're looking for something "close" to town - this isn't it. They are located near Spiro, Ok - sort of between Spirit and Sallisaw, Ok. I cannot say we have complaints, as the food was good and service was good, they had a great "set up" that included pickles, Josh puppies and Cole Slaw. We got baked potatoes and fried catfish, fried clams and fried scallops. We really enjoyed it. read more

I got fried shrimp. It tasted like it was soaked in bleach water! The hush puppies were delicious,coleslaw and beans as well. My boyfriend got the catfish and he said it was the consistency of a mushy banana! So no I don't recommend it. But if that's your thing then go for it! Waitress was kind and nice. Found this resturant on yelp during an evening of travel. Don't let some of the reviews steer you away - it almost did for us but thought we give it a try. This place was delicious and the people were so friendly. Our meal started with a fantastic server Jaylie who treated us like family and answered all of our questions about the food honestly. As the other reviews have said the set up with beans, slaw and hush puppies are a must. All very tasty and the hush puppies and beans are a standout. We had the catfish based on Jaylies recommendation and it was great and being from Oklahoma we know our catfish. It was Perfectly fried with great crunchy batter with HAND CUT fries and trust me when I say the fries are worth the stop alone. If you travel a lot you know how rare handout fries are and these were spectacular. The entire experience was great, inexpensive and really just good food and nice people. If I could give 0 stars I would. DO NOT EAT HERE!!!!! We read the reviews and were hopeful, we have been craving catfish so we thought let's give it a try. BOY WAS THAT A MISTAKE. The fish is a catfish, but I think it is from the Philippines which is called Swai, not the good ole American catfish. They try to fill you up on the "fixins" which is coleslaw, hushpuppies, pickles and onion, so that they don't have to serve a lot of fish for the all you can eat. My husbands, who is a chef, french fries were inedible, we probably had 5 bites of actual fish each, the rest was just crust. My baked potato was ok, the hushpuppies and pickle were ok. There was only 2 other sets of people there, but it still took over 30 minutes to get our food. A table next to us got seated as we were receiving our food and they got their food within 10 minutes. We paid $40 for 10 bites of fish, baked potato, 2 pickles and the hushpuppies, which are better than Captain D's in Colorado. read more

We were plenty surprised! We had read others reviews and were a little nervous about what to order. However, diners inside recommended the fish and the grilled chicken. Jaylie, our waitress, brought us the set up to get us going. My husband ordered the all-you-can-eat catfish dinner. My sister-in-law and I ordered the 2 piece catfish meal with hand cut fries. In the set up you receive coleslaw (not too sweet and not too tart), beans that apparently are a safeguarded recipe (delicious but do have beef tallow in them--info only for those Alpha Gal positive), a dill pickle spears and onion plate, and a bowl of hushpuppies (holy schmokes, these puppies are delicious!!). Everything in the setup was made fresh! The catfish was hot, crispy, crunchy, and delicious! Jaylie was very kind, and personable. It was an oasis we had been looking for in the Sequoyah County area. What a great fish find in a small town, omg everything was prepared when ordered and super delicious. The place is clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful with the menu items. I reluctantly ordered the fried scallops which I've never had, usually it's grilled or pan seared but I'm so glad I did. They were super delicious and not over cooked at all. The endless fried catfish is amazingly delicious and we definitely ate our fill. There was a line out the door around dinner time but it's worth it. They have the BEST catfish dinners! Also have steaks, salmon, and shrimp to name a few.. The service is ALWAYS exceptional!

I hate it when hushpuppies just come out of a bag -- I can get THOSE at a freaking grocery store.) About twelve bucks plus sales tax per diner for AYCO catfish and sides. It is all you can eat and the food is very good. The starters are pinto beans, slaw, pickled green tomatoes, onion and pickles, and hush puppies. The meal comes with your choice of fries, baked potato or vegetables. The pinto beans are great and the slaw is some of the best I have had in any restaurant. The hush puppies are served up fresh from the fryer. They are hot, light in texture and crispy on the outside. Even though they were good, I wish they had a little more flavor like the traditional hush puppy with onion and a little spice. The fish was average. Maybe over cooked a little to my liking. In all it was still a very good meal and a tremendous value for all you can eat. They also have a good variety of other seafood. This place had good reviews so while visiting, we gave it a try. I really wasn't impressed. Feels like a big warehouse. You start with coleslaw, beans and hush puppies. Pretty average as far as flavor. My daughter said the shrimp was good. I had the catfish and really didn't enjoy it. My husband said the same. The seasoning didn't seem quite right. So I don't know who "Shad" is, but I'm thinking about leaving my husband for him...lol..just kidding honey. Who ever Shad is, he is a great cook. First they bring you hush puppies which are made of air and something else that is fattening because they are soooo good. I ate 32 of them, not really but probably almost. They also bring you beans and let me tell you, you will slap your mama over these beans. Mama just pretended to make good beans, she did not make beans like these. They also bring you cole slaw, which tastes fresh and crispy and light. They have great wait staff that checks on you all the time but not too much. Some people call this place a "Hidden gem" some people call it a "hole in the wall." I call it often, to make sure it's open, so I can go back every chance I get! Trust the fat girl !! Ordered over the phone for pick up and it took along time for my order to be ready. The fries were way over done like they have been dipped into the grease over and over, and I could ring out the grease!! They forgot my baked potato in one of the meals and they threw all the food together instead of boxing each meal separate. It was four orders meaning four customers. Why would they do that? On my second visit to this restaurant I was served with (unrecognizable) grilled catfish. It resembled mush. No, I couldn't attempt to eat it. This was served to me after my husband and son had been given their food and were almost finished eating. It was sent back to the kitchen and I was then brought I bowl of grilled shrimp that was actually boiled shrimp. My dinner was served in a bowl! Worth every mile of the drive to the Metropolis known as Sallisaw, Oklahoma. This little Hole in the Wall serving delightful portions of Catfish, Brown Beans and the Worlds most delightful Hushpuppies has been a Family Favorite for over 20 years. My first trip to Shad's Catfish Hole was about 6 years ago. I love hearing about eating establishments with a little travel involved. My Uncle told me of my Fathers favorite Catfish place in Sallisaw. Dad passed in '93 so it sounded like it would be worth it for the sake of nostalgia alone. So much of the place reminded me that my father was a food lover in the same way I am. Great food, served by good people, in environments that ranged from 5 Star Luxury to a Lean Too in South Central Los Angeles. The Catfish Hole is somewhere North of the Lean Too. Nothing to obviously point out that the place serves magnificent, simple, Country Food,with the exception of a very Large Parking Lot that fills up very quickly once the clock strikes 4:30. Once you get a seat, you quickly get your drink order and the food begins. Shad's has a Set-Up that hits the table immediately. A wonderful delight for the long travel to get there and in the parking lot you see that people travel from several States to get there. Bowls of Brown Beans, Cole Slaw and Hushpuppies arrive hot on the table. Of course, you need some Country in your heritage to appreciate great Brown Beans, and we have that in spades. Because everybody on our family will quickly have the server refilling these main dishes. I have to say, for the record, we have spent hours in our own kitchens attempting to recreate the Hushpuppies. Yes, I am bragging, on Yelp, about Hushpuppies. I have eaten Hushpuppies in Hushpuppy Cities; Atlanta, New Orleans, Memphis, Charleston, Biloxi, etc... These are THE BEST Hushpuppies you will ever eat. The Slaw is also delicious. For your true Inner Country Boy, or Girl, they also serve Wedges of Raw Onion with Pickles and, if you request, Pickled Green Tomatoes that are perfectly sweet with a slight hint of spice. This is The Set-Up and if you require nothing else, it's $6.00. It is so good, you may fill up and decide to try the catfish another time. The Prime Contender for Entree is Catfish and it is an excellent example of Buttermilk Soaked, Cornmeal Breaded Country Catfish. You will not be disappointed. I also love their Wood Fired Salmon and Tuna Steak. My wife likes the Top Sirloin, prepared on the same fire. If you want a nice drive through the country, or racing down I-40, this place is a great destination, Hole In The Wall Eatery, appreciated enough to draw huge crowds to Sallisaw. If you head west out of the Parking Lot, you can enjoy a beautiful sunset off the Kerr Reservoir, just 2 miles away. It's a Country Place worthy of 5 Stars. read more
