Came here for the first time the other day to shoot our pistols and was pleasantly surprised. I will say that this is definitely a pistol range not super far for rifle shooting. The facility is cleaner and well kept, service is on point and it's bays are well put together. This is definitely nicer than Red's to go shoot our pistols. We really enjoyed it here and will be back to fire off more rounds, but if you are looking for a clean, well kept range, with a friendly knowledgeable staff this is a great place to come! Been here twice now. Love this place. Clean, newer target systems, solid hvac air flow, and friendly ROs. Only used the rifle range (50yrs) so far but compared to other ranges I go, I'd pick this one every time. Just remember, their range, their rules. As for some of the negative reviews, treat them with respect and they will do the same with you. Act like a knucklehead know it all, I assume you'll be treated accordingly. read more

Fantastic indoor gun range. Staff is very courteous and knowledgeable. They make you feel very welcome. Safety guidelines are quite clear and no matter what your experience level is, it is covered in detail in your first visit. I was in Austin for 2 weekends + 1 week in between and ended up going there each weekend. Gun selections: I shot with 7 different 9mm and 4 different .45ACP handguns. All of them were well-maintained and in excellent condition (no jamming, etc). The selection offers you a wide variety of options. Both rentals and ammunition is offered at a fair price. For a visitor or a first-timer, I sincerely recommend this place. As far as myself, I'll definitely be a repeating customer. read more

I had a worthwhile visit. I'm buying a new 9mm. I researched some features and wanted to "try before buy". This outfit provides rentals! They didn't have the two specific versions I'll eventually buy. That's OK because the knowledgeable staff had for rent the same models (if not version) by the same manufacturers. I don't have this kind of encyclopedic knowledge of options. They explained the slight differences so that I knew it was still worth the test drive. The fun part? I got to experience the fit and feel at the range and ruled in a winner in a safe environment. What a valuable service! I selected Shady Oaks for a firearm transfer since they were on the preferred dealers list, their license already on file. I stopped by and checked in at the front door. They have a secure entrance which is great. I was directed to the pro shop. I spoke with Jim who asked if I had been contacted to let me know they had received my shipment. I hadn't spoken with anyone, I just knew from the tracking information that it should be there. I told him I had not been contacted and he gruffly stated that if I had not been contacted that it probably wasn't there. I didn't care for his tone and turned to leave. I was pretty sure it was there, I would just have to wait to be contacted. Now Jim seemed willing to check. He did and I had missed his notification call. He brought the item out, I filled out the paperwork, got approval and paid the $65.00 fee. Putting all this together, neither Shady Oaks or Jim want to be bothered with firearms transfers. With a fee almost double other FFL dealers charge and Jim's attitude that seems pretty clear. There are ten or more FFL dealers in the area such as Saddle Rock Armory and The Gunman who happily handle transfers with a lower fee and much better attitude. Maybe Shady Oaks is an excellent range, I won't be finding out. One experience soured me on the whole operation. Does it matter? I use to work in Killeen. None of the businesses felt compelled to provide good service. One hundred different troops arrived in any given week, replacing the 100 troops leaving the area. If a certain number of customers were dissatisfied service at any given business it didn't matter. If the business could retain a given number of customers, they could stay in business. They didn't have to have everyone's patronage, just enough. read more

Took two new shooters who were interested in learning and buying guns to this range to learn how to shoot, we were quickly met with a hard no. Because they're new shooters they weren't aloud to shoot anything bigger than a .22 and had to "qualify" to shoot a rifle, but when asking if they had a rifle for them to qualify with they told us they would rent us one for $20 plus ammo cost. We left and went to another range. As a gun range you should see yourself as a second amendment advocate, not someone who dictates what Americans can and can not shoot in your place of business. I'm glad the other range we went to was a much more positive experience other wise guns might have been ruined for these new shooters. read more

I have been here before and they treated me great. I decided to go again and they basically told me to get lost because it's illegal at the age of 20 to buy ammo and shoot in the range with my personal firearm, because I'm not 21... I called them asking why when I have been there before and was able to rent and buy ammo. I also called a couple places asking if it was illegal to buy ammo and shoot with my age at their range and they said it's legal if I buy ammo and shoot on range along with renting a gun. The store owner said " it was a mistake on our behave to have let you shoot and sell you ammo along with renting you a gun because your under age." I stated did you not see my ID the first time and saw I was under age? His response was " do you really think I check every single ID that comes in here?" I mean I do hope so since you aren't selling candy here. read more

Edit: Every store/range can have bad experiences but Shady Oaks set themselves apart by providing a level of customer service not often seen. I've revised my feedback since I see now that they do care about their customers. I've been coming here for close to 2 years. Shady Oak's target malfunctioned while I was in the middle of my shoot. I was going to keep shooting for another hour at least but there were no other targets open so I decided to just call it a day instead of waiting again. I asked for a refund at least a partial one since I didn't get my full monies worth. The lady that works there was completely rude and denied my pretty reasonable request. I'm not into causing scenes or drama and it was just like $15 so I let it go and decided I would just look for a new place and let other customers know about it through this review. read more

There are a few reasons that I chose to give 5 stars. The range is close to my house which is good and bad. Good because it's easy to get to and bad because I have a feeling I'll be going a lot. But is that "really" a bad thing? I think not. The staff was all really nice and joking with me and my friends before and after our range time. It made me feel comfortable with them. They never once made any of us feel like our questions were bothersome. While in the range area the staff was great. Doug was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. Gave us a few tips and I appreciated that a ton. The entire place was clean and as far as I can tell the staff and other customers all were pleased to be helpful and to have chosen Shady Oaks. THE go to range for professionals. Allows rapid fire, safe , efficient, clean and new facilities, knowledgeable and respectful staff unlike most ranges. Would like to see them carry more inventory as far as firearms and optics/parts but I understand space is limited. If they increase their sales selection I can see them being the #1 range in the Austin and surrounding area. Besides that point it is still my favorite range with amazing pricing. read more

From the moment my family and I walked in the door of this establishment we knew we weren't welcome! The cashier had a horrible attitude and she made condescending remarks as she told us the lanes were full....when clearly there were only 8-9 cars in the parking lot! Thank God we have the opportunity to choose where I want to spend my money, and it damn sure won't EVER be here! *Update* The owner responded- glad you actually took the time to respond to my concerns. However, if you pay attention to a few other reviews there are SEVERAL others bringing the rude cashier to your attention and to the attention of others coming into your establishment. As far as indoor gun ranges go, this place is WORLDS beyond their competition. Range Rules were explained in a very detailed manner and were strictly enforced, but they weren't jerks about it. Range Officers are helpful, a little too helpful as they bug you about offering you tips and such a little too often. The lobby is very clean and welcoming. There is a nice spot to sit and relax before or after shooting. The range is also very clean. My only complaint is the ammo is bit expensive. Next time, we will bring our own. read more

Absolutely wonderful experience here every time I go. The staff is friendly, the range instructors are super helpful and maintain the highest integrity with safety. When I'm at this range I can focus on shooting vs looking over my shoulder to make sure no one is being irresponsible. I'm an avid shooter, and this an excellent shooting range. On my first visit, I was greeted warmly by the manager, registered by filling out a simple form, got quick instructions and was on my way to the shooting range area in minutes. When I arrived in the shooting range, I was impressed at how brightly lit and cool the entire place was. There were a couple of other shooters there, but the noise level was pretty low. I was greeted by the Range Safety Officer (RSO), who gave me a quick introduction to the equipment, then sat down and inconspicuously watched to make sure I knew I was doing. On two visits, I've been impressed with how friendly and helpful the RSO's have been; this is for me a make or break quality of any shooting range. Compared to Red's North, I would say the range is much better than their pistol range, in terms of sound, equipment, and comfort. Red's does have a better rifle range, going out to 100 yards, but their equipment and lighting just doesn't compare. One surprising thing about this range is that they *do* allow rapid fire! as long as you can keep your firearm on target. I brought an AR15 to test out a new BCG and buffer, and blasted 200 rounds in a few minutes with no issue. Also, I was shooting some valuable brass, and the RSO recognized it and raked it all into a pile that I could easily pack up and take home. This was a nice touch. Normally, they rake the brass into a cool little drainage grate. All in all, I've really enjoyed my experience here and plan to become a regular. read more

I found this location by looking for "dealers" who sold a specific gun model that I was wanting.. low and behold I located Shady Oaks and even learned that they had a range as well. The service and staff here are top notch professionals all the way around and the facilities are the same. My first contact here was with Brandon when I called and discussed the model that I was looking for. He provided a lot of good information and simply invited me to come down. So I agreed. At the location, I spent a lengthy amount of time speaking about the nuances of various firearms I was looking at/for with Jim the manager. I have a background with firearms as well, so we were able to trade off thoughts and opinions. He is a true professional who knows many things about everything they sell, things that they don't, and what things he could suggest for you as a shooter or purchaser of firearm. I also observed his kind demeanor assisting others who were not possibly familiar or comfortable with some of the information that they needed clarified; whether firearms regulations or purchasing guidelines. He kept that persons best interests foremost in his mind. While at the location I spent some time at the firing range. If you have any questions about anything, if Jim can't answer it, then Michelle is more than capable to assist. Michelle worked the check-in for the range and she is very thorough with explaining all your questions and answers so that you feel comfortable to go shoot. Nothing intimidating, but everything informative. She can also provide personal tips on weapons preferences if you were stuck on a fact/opinion like I was. I appreciated her perspective very much. The range itself has about 10 firing lanes and is rated for low caliber and high caliber rifles and pistols; you will shoot next to each other in some instances, so just be prepared. The firer next to me was a smart young teenager precision target shooting as I was blasting away with a LOUDER and higher caliber weapon... I was impressed with his limited distractions from my weapon as he was hitting his target very well. The lanes are comfortable, they have individual controls for lights and target control, have a good solid shelf for your gear and weapon, and a nice protective glass divider between stations.The HVAC ventilation truly is a great filter of air circulation as I never smelled any smoke from the firearms on the range nor witnessed any lingering smoke. The overall area is clean and well maintained. The RSO's (Range Safety Officers) are always monitoring the firing line and constantly keeping spent casings out of the way by sweeping them from around your feet. Additionally, they keep targets available in the firing room so there is no need to leave the safety of the room to get new ones (very convenient). If you need a shooting tip, they can provide that as well. (Thanks RSO Mark.. it was great speaking with you about H&K trigger models) Overall, I could not have experienced a better shooting experience. I have handled weapons my entire life and have spent thousands of hours at the range, so my experience is solid. Shady Oaks Gun Range is a family friendly and professional gun shop with firing range that welcomes everyone of all experience levels. You can rent various guns here to test fire, purchase the ammo with the rental, and rent safety gear, and purchase targets and accessories. If they don't have what you need, they sure know how to get it for you. Pro tips: - They offer license to carry classes, introductory to firearms classes, and have professional instructors available (I spoke with Peter about a few tips) - They have a classroom on the premises as well as accessories and various guns for sale ~ Monday Nights is LADIES NIGHT! This was my first trip to Shady Oaks and the experience was awesome. I took both my pistols and my AR-15 for a little range time (1.5 hour). Craig, one of the Range Maters, really takes his time to come and introduce himself to the shooters and provides the safety and range rules. During my range time, I would take a few little breaks to asses my target and the range guys would clean around my area, which I like because while you're shooting and adjusting your stance, you don't have to worry about the rounds around on the floor in your lane. Found out about this place on an event I saw on Facebook. There's ample parking and the building from the outside looks very promising. As we entered, we were greeted immediately and told them we were there for their Grand Opening and would like a tour. The co-owner Raymond was very informative and friendly. They have cameras in the range that you can view from the storefront which is a separate building from the range. They have a few selection for rental and the inventory will increase shortly. Ladies, the bathroom meets our approval! More than one stall and a vanity...lol The breezeway outside to the range has potential of adding tables with umbrella (summer months) while waiting for a lane to open. As soon as you step into the range, you will be greeted by another friendly staff member. They are still in the process of adding furniture (lockers) in the waiting room. This is where you pick up your targets and you can bring your own as well (awesome)! Now for the range, they have a sophisticated air conditioning system that I cannot repeat verbatim how it functions but it minimizes the smell of gun powder and lead. Another great feature is the sound proofing...I usually have to use two ear protections, foam inserts & ear muffs. I only used ear foams and it was great. The partitions between each lane is wide enough to where you won't experience any brass flying on you. I love the height of the bench rest. I am under 5' and always had issues my arm height when shooting but this place it was perfect. The have one lane that is handicap friendly for those who have physical challenges or in a wheelchair. The only con I have is the price. I moved from another state to the West where I was a member at the gun range and it cost $10 per hour at a top notch gun range. However, that is not going to stop me from coming to Shady Oaks. I would suggest to offer an annual membership in the future. read more

I was so disappointed! I went in for the ltc gun range to finish my ltc and the person who did the course was very rude to me. They had a 30 minute where they were trying to sell us on an insurance then I went in to do my 50 rounds shooting with 8 other people and the guy doing the course kept stopping me and told me after 40 rounds even though I passed on my score that I needed to do it again. So I did the same day to finish and he still told me I had to do it again after 14 rounds because he didn't have time. I told mgmt they told me to spend more money doing another time with another person. Im so disappointed. I told them I will take my business elsewhere and recommend others do the same. Do not do your ltc here at this gun range. I felt he did this because I'm a woman and I have not been in the army, navy or air force. So just warning you. read more

My favorite gun range in Texas ! The place is practically brand new, the range area is nice and comfortable. The range officers are the nicest people and are very helpful. I've never had a bad experience here. My wife and kids love coming here. The front staff are also very helpful,polite and outgoing. I always tell people to come out and check this place out. We LOVE Shady Oaks! BEST indoor range I've ever been to. The facility is very clean, safe and inviting. I like the fact that the actual range is in a separate building from where you check in. They have a nice selection of firearms for rental and purchase and their prices aren't bad either. There are tables and chairs if you need to wait for a lane and their restrooms are nice and clean too. As soon as you walk into the range, you'll notice 3 things right away: (1) it's well-lit; (2) it's not stuffy or warm because the air filtration system is so good; and (3) the acoustics are good so it's not too loud. The lanes are spacious unlike Red's and the lane dividers have ballistic glass which makes you feel more safe. The RSOs (Range Safety Officers) are awesome! They're very friendly, always keeping a close on everything going on and are very willing to instruct and give pointers. If you save your shells, they'll help you collect them too. Shooting has become a real passion of mine and the RSOs and instructors at Shady Oaks are a HUGE part of the reason why. You will see first-hand how nice this facility is and I'm sure anybody would come here as a first choice to shoot. The amazing staff is really what did it for us though. I don't care how nice your facility is... if it's run by a bunch of unfriendly jerks that don't welcome you, screw it. Shady Oaks, however, has the best range AND staff. Everyone has been so friendly, so inviting, and so cool. It really takes our shooting experience to another level. We have so much fun talking with the staff whether it's on the range or in the lobby. Over the past 2 months, Shady Oaks has become like a second home and family to us. This place is the Ritz Carlton of gun ranges. I've been shooting for 25+ years and have visited dozens of gun ranges. All of them can be summarized into a few categories: 1) Cold war era facilities and grumpy old men waiting to yell at you. 2) Cold war era facilities and middle aged men that think their customers are idiots and everything they say is gospel about guns/ammo 3) This place. I've never been to a gun range that care so much about their customers. I was greeted at the door by their friendly staff. They handled my FFL transfer very quickly and offered to have me try out their gun range. The range is awesome. You can see pictures on their website. Brian McRae, the range security officer greeted me with a smile and a handshake and offered to lube up my brand new Mossberg 500 combo (28" & 18/5 barrels). I told him that I've been a long time rifle and pistol shooter but this was my first shotgun. He gave me a quick 30-second rundown of the gun and told me to let him know if I had any questions. He has a similar model. I think a date night is in my future at this place - it's that nice. My wife would definitely approve of the facility and friendliness of the staff. The price of the shooting and ammo is in line with the quality of the facility. Also, they have all the new and popular model guns for rent and for purchase. Also, a well-stocked parts and accessories shop. I picked up a t-shirt. read more

This place is great! I'm a frequent shooter, and I've been used to driving out to Reds North, which is pretty far, and when I found out about Shady Oaks I was so happy about how close the location was to me. Right as you walk in the front desk is super friendly and it's super quick to get into a lane. I met the manager as well who was very informative, letting me in on deals and how the place works. After you walk in, you immediately get a comfort from the place. This range is new and state of the art, it's very nice, and the lanes have lots of room for you. The lanes also have lighting management which is fairly convenient. It's a 25 yard range, which is perfect for pistols, and it's moderate for rifles. They have a vast variety of targets to shoot at, all of which will suit anyone's shooting style. The price of the targets are pretty good, you get 3 for a dollar, and the large full body targets are only one dollar, capable of taking lots of brass. The price, management, location, and shooting of this place was very great, I loved the experience and I'm sure I found a favorite new range for myself! read more

So much better than the Range at Austin-that place is a lot of hype because folks like Tim Kennedy shoot there, but it's overpriced and the lessons are not the most helpful. I took a lesson with Les this past week at Shady Oaks; he's fantastic! He took me first into the classroom to explain the anatomy of the gun, rules, etc. prior to taking me into the range. The actual gun range is so much quieter at Shady Oaks than the Range at Austin-I could hear Les no problem the entire time. At the Range at Austin, the guy spent a couple minutes outside the firing range giving me instructions, and you could barely hear a word. Then he took me into the lane (which is crazy loud) and was trying to give me the remainder of the instructions, and I couldn't hear a word. It was my first time shooting, so I was nervous, and that didn't help (I also survived a shooting in college, so part of this experience was wanting to get over my fear of guns-again, didn't help LOL). read more

I have had the pleasure of visiting this local range on a number of occasions, but not as much as I would like. Recently, I attended an Active Shooter Response training course and I have to say, it was really good. Not only did we learn response strategies for active shooter situations, in the workplace or in the public, the course also incorporated a firearms training component. I would highly recommend this course for those wondering what they would do in a scenario like this. Unfortunately, this type of thing is becoming all too common, and having a basic set of tools and mindset could mean the difference between victim and survival for you, your family or colleagues. Nice place but pricey. We came here to try out a couple new guns we had bought. So a simple afternoon outing. We were very surprised to find that it is $15 per 45 minutes. So for two of us, it got pricey very quick. No military discount is offered which was very disappointing. Overall the range was nice and the staff was very friendly and helpful. But I'm not sure it will be our go to range simply because of the price. read more
