A week ago our water started to turn off and then come back. Called Shaffer Beacon and it turned out my 40 year old well pump was shutting down on overload. They scheduled to replace the pump the following week and Randy and his crew did an amazing job. Pulling a 40 year old pump that's 185 feet down isn't an easy job. They replaced the pump, the piping, the wiring and the pump cap, so everything is brand new. They also suggested, and I agreed, to replace the 40 year old pressure tank rather do it later on a separate service call. Unfortunately for Shaffer, Randy is retiring next month, which will be a great loss, but I'm sure his assistants will fill his shoes. Was a satisfied client of Beacon Mechanical for many years. The new ownership deal is questionable to me. They called to do an annual service on the A/C. They stated that there would be a $60 fee to drive maybe 15 miles and then a $180 hourly charge. I went elsewhere for under $100. read more

Terrible experience with this group. They were to install a gas furnace and AC unit. Installed the furnace unit upside down, even after we had explained ours required a different set up. Installer seemed to be "in training." Were left without heat during a very cold winter (contrary to what they said), had to invest in heaters and incur higher electric bills until they were able to get it right. They had told us there would be compensation for our out-of-pocket costs - never happened. Their poor communication and project management make them a bad choice. read more

In today's Covid world, it has become increasingly difficult to find solid & follow thru providers nationwide, but these folks and specifically our project lead "Shane" was exceptional in truly thinking about our unique HVAC needs versus trying to aggressively push down their own solutions to an older home renovation we are working on. He was uniquely creative in presenting different options and answering our many questions. We hire contractors, HVAC and plumbers nationwide for a variety of projects, and we were not sure about contracting a company that just went thru a merger at the end of 2021 - but Shane's expertise, home customized solutions and quick follow up made our decision to move ahead with these folks, and as of today we are glad we did. As in any major home project you undertake during these covid years, make sure Shane secures equipment as soon as you are ready to go and be flexible on the scheduled installation time ( ie, supplies delays, covid absences and weather/snow storm). If you need the remote Wi-Fi thermostat so you can program the system remotely like we do - make sure they order that as soon as order is placed, and like with every home renovation project and provider used during these covid years - make sure your final payment piece is subject to final inspection approval always. The team on site with Scott as install manager and not sure on the name of the other onsite manager (Dave?) as install lead also did a great job and stayed on top of quality checks on the install. read more

crazy prices, misleading information over the phone when you make an appointment. You are told you are billed a full hour no matter what- makes sense. They don't say that it happens to be one hour travel time plus one hour at the home. So after a 45 min visit from the technician, nothing being fixed and charging me $400 I still have to find a company who charges reasonable rates to come out and resolve my problem. Beacon has lost a customer, fan speed fault took well over a year to diagnosis, threw part after part without fixing ,had furnace factory rep come and diagnosis was made within a hr. A simple thermostat, now service manager Ron and Jason who I purchased unit from have done nothing to make right for parts that weren't needed. Avoid at all costs. read more

RUN AWAY from this company. They will tell you they caused a problem and will fix it and then lie to you when it comes time to pay that the conversation never happened. After seven years of loyal service they have lost a customer and respect. I was told there would only be a part to fix an issue caused by their tech during a service visit less than 48 hours previous. I spoke to Amanda in the office and she said that they were going to send the same technician because the overnight tech who I sent a video of what was going on to said it was something that they caused. "Shockingly," when the same tech came back out, he didn't think it was something he had caused and insisted on charging me for labor again as well. I paid him to get him to leave and called Amanda to resolve the issue, but she outright lied to me that our conversation this morning had never happened. Disappointed because for years, I had received very reliable service from Beacon, but quality has gone downhill considerably since they merged with Shaffer. read more

Horrible company that botched a new boiler and oil tank install and failed to take responsibility. It would take a hundred pages to detail this mess, but to sum it up, they put old oil from the bottom of a 30 year old tank into a new tank, despite the giant warning sign on the oil tank they put in saying not to do so. We had soot issues and burned through oil faster than our 30 year old boiler, and when we reached out, the blame process began. First they said it was our chimney, so we had that cleaned (it was fine). Then they said it was something else. Then they tried to gaslight us with explanations that made zero sense. Eventually, after numerous service calls (while we had to take time off work over and over again), we called the "System 2000" dealer and they made Beacon Schaffer empty and clean the oil tanks and clean the boiler. That made it a bit better, but still more soot than usual and still burns through more oil than our neighbors who have the same system. They made many mistakes in the install and did not take responsibility. We requested to speak to the owner several times and he never once responded. Jason, the sales manager, out right lied repeatedly, told us money gets taken out of his pay if they have to reimburse us ( a major disincentive to fix issues), and in my opinion, did not act in a professional or ethical manner. It is my recommendation that you avoid this company. I would hate to have any one else go through what we went through. read more

In the fall of 2020 we purchased a new Heil HVAC system from (then) Beacon Mechanical. We were very pleased with the professionalism of the installation crew, and the performance of the new system. In March, 2023 I contacted (now) Shaffer Beacon Mechanical to schedule a spring check-up, but as they were in the process of changing their service plans & costs were not yet available, I had the spring check-up done by another HVAC company, and was informed the system was low on refrigerant and there may be a leak. As the Heil system was under warranty, I immediately contacted Shaffer Beacon, and received a prompt response from their service manager. One of the things he told me was that my Heil warranty "requires that there be proper maintenance over the course of the warranty, at least one time per year." The fact that most of the world was locked down due to COVID did not seem to matter. Over the past two months, I have made numerous attempts to contact Shaffer Beacon both via phone and email to further discuss this issue with no response from either the service manager or ownership of Shaffer Beacon. Based on this experience, I would not recommend Shaffer Beacon for the purchase or servicing of an HVAC system. read more

This is a review i left on Facebook last year: Only used this company because it was who the seller chose before we purchased the home. The guys who installed the furnace did a hack job, lazy, which was only determined when the tech came out at night to fix their mistakes. The tech was also out the next day for no heat because they didn't bleed the system... and they'll be out today AGAIN for no heat. The tech that was out twice was nice, seemed knowledgeable and was patient fixing someone else's mistake, but we wouldn't have had any of these issues if the other techs did the right thing the first time. UPDATE FOR THIS YEAR: Same problems. They've been out 5 times in the last 3 weeks and still no resolution. The unit they installed is faulty and they refuse to acknowledge it. Up at 4 am freezing because now i have no heat in my entire house, pipes will most likely burst like they did last week. Tech was out earlier today and said there was nothing wrong that we need to just change our batteries on our thermostats () so after i did that, less than 6 hours later we have no heat again. One zone isn't even ON on the furnace. Mind you, my thermostats are set at 75. And Ron, the service manager might be the rudest and most unprofessional "manager" I've ever had to talk to. read more

Avoid this company at all cost. They only care about the money and not their costumers. I never signed up for auto refill for the oil tank and specifically told one of the costumer reps that I would call to refill the tank when needed. They came the following month anyways and ended up with a huge bill again. Contacted a representative through email, told them I did not authorize them to do a refill and that I recently lost my job due to coronavirus. Got a letter in the mail along with the bill stating I could do payment plan. Called and was told twice that payment plan was not an option. Told them about the letter I received but was not heard. Ended my services with them. Please do yourself a favor and avoid this company at all cost. read more

On 1/20/2022 I formally cancelled my unused Service Contract with Shaffer Beacon and requested the return of the $190 charge. SB failed to provide a refund. On 2/8 I disputed the charge with my credit card company. On 2/12 the credit card company contacted SB. SB failed to respond. On 4/1 my credit card company notified me that the issued had been resolved in my favor. Had I not disputed the charge with my credit card company, I wonder if I ever would have received a refund. I called Beacon Mechanical because I had an urgent issue that needed to be fixed the day before officially selling my house- time was of the essence! I spoke with Dave and he had me troubleshoot some things over the phone. Then we did a video call to walk me through even more steps to try and solve the problem! He was kind, patient, intelligent and just felt like a good guy trying to help out. I ended up getting the problem solved but, if not, I would have hired him to come out to my house without a doubt. read more

I have nothing but good things to say about Beacon Mechanical. When we bought a new house a year ago, I solicited recommendations for service companies to come give a tuneup to our AC and boiler. Everyone I've interacted with has been pleasant and provided good service. The technicians have been courteous and knowledgeable. Although I haven't had to use them in an emergency, I did sign up for a service contract and feel confident they would respond quickly if needed. Fingers crossed I won't have to ever report on their services on that front! read more

Used them about 5 years ago only because my 0% interest loan through the State had a list and they were the only company in my area. Went through about 20 circulating pumps do to too much air in the system. They came out and had looked at my house and had figures how to install the new furnace and pipes. They did not put an air eliminator on the system and now I am being told by 3 companies (I did my homework and even talked to the building department) that I need to spend $3,500 to haver an air eliminator and expansion tank added and the pipes moved. I did not have good service with them when the furnace was first put in and now they haunt me with this repair again. Do not use them. read more

I had an issue a couple of years ago where there was air in my lines after I paid for a boiler cleaning, and I left only a 2 star review when someone wouldn't be sent out to find out what happened. However, I have to say that I can't be happier with Beacon's service. We decided to get a new boiler, and Beacon gave us a very competitive quote for the system we selected. However, not only was their price great, they went out of their way to help us secure financing through the Energize CT loan program so that we could get a 0.99% 10 year loan on a new boiler. They worked with us step by step to ensure that the loan went through without any problems and so that work could get started as soon as possible. After the loan was approved, they were able to install within a week and it took them one full day to re-pipe the entire system. We even had a hiccup with the system the day after it was installed. It acted up a couple of times, once providing no heat when it should have been and another time where it was providing too much heat when it should not have been sending any. They had a technician ready to come out to the house the day after I called. However, by the next day the issue hadn't occurred again in over 24 hours so I called back to let them know that it might have been a fluke and to save themselves a trip. They said they wanted to send someone anyway, and the tech came and replaced the sensor just in case it was the cause of the issue. Overall, it has been a very seamless experience and it is comforting to know that even if there is an issue after the install that they are dedicated to fixing it. read more

Today, I had a tech from Beacon come out and repair two toilets, one shower and one sink. I obviously was letting things get a little out of control. The tech was on time, friendly, courteous and cleaned up after himself. He ran out to get parts and when the bill came it was beyond reasonable. I had a heating issue with my HVAC this past week.They were nice enough to come on a holiday.My heating was fixed temporarily.I paid the bill (Another $500)and I needed a follow -up replacement of parts. They did not provide breakdown of parts and labor the second time they(around $900).I asked for breakdown the technician seemed irritated and said he has no time and I need follow up with office.Finally I insisted he call office and they gave me breakdown but billed me for 2 hours instead of 1.When i questioned 2 hours of labor they gave many me many excuses. I had a terrible time with a warranty company when I purchased my new home. The staff at Beacon came alongside us and not only guided us in what to ask for, but they supported us as we went through a very stressful time with a different company! Ultimately we "cashed out" of the warranty company after a month of waiting for service. Beacon was there the next day. Beacon has done numerous heating projects for us and we have always been pleased with their work. The estimates were very fair and the work was completed in a timely manner. When natural gas became available in Granby, Beacon did a wonderful job in removing 2 tanks / old boiler and installed a super high- efficiency boiler.....now we spend less and stay warmer. Consistent with all of our experiences with the company, Beacon's professionals were on time, did a great job with the installation, and provided high quality workmanship at an excellent price point. After conducting considerable research on central a/c manufacturers, the one constant in all the reviews was that the greatest barometer of reliability in whatever mfr chosen will be the installer. Tech drained my system using my washing machine drain and neglected to replace the washing machine drain hose when he left. I did laundry and the washer drained into my basement. Beacon has repeatedly ignored my emails and has done nothing to rectify the damage done to my basement. I should have put a stop payment on my check but I thought they'd do the right thing like the service manager said they would. read more

As an update I heard from the owner of the company who waved the extra service fee for installing the broken hose and just paid for the part. The serviceman was very nice and the job took about 5-10 minutes to complete. So the owner stepped up to plate and made it right with me. However, just so everyone knows the part on the internet costs half the price and I found a video which explains how to replace the hose so next time I will do it myself! read more

Jason came out to our house to give us a quote to switch from oil to natural gas and AC. Several emails, phone calls, and over a month later he still did not get a quote to us. When he finally did, he emailed us some fliers about their furnace/AC system. We asked again about the duct work we need and he said he would need his duct guy to come out to evaluate the house. I don't know how they have any business given this level of customer service. We've moved on to a company that could evaluate our house and give us a quote in a timely manner. read more

I had a boiler installed a few months ago and the installation guy was swearing, smoking cigarettes and yelling at the people helping him. They had to come out twice to make adjustment on this boiler. I also called for plumbing service for help adjusting the little plastic valve inside the temperature valve arm kit I replaced myself. They sent a kid without any tools. He used my tools, replaced a $100 part that had nothing to do with the call for service. Didn't even tell me thats what he was doing. We had to wait hours for the part to be delivered because he had nothing with him. He replaced a part I already bought, cost me $4 at home depot they charges me almost $20. somehow he managed to mess up my water pressure and they had so send someone else out to fix whatever went wrong. This was a simple cosmetic repair I was doing. I received a bill for $266.22. When I called to ask why it was so expensive the man on the phone was condescending and spoke to me like I was an idiot. This process was very frustrating. I used to order oil from them regularly but I don't want them anywhere near my house anymore. read more

I had a leak with my oil furnace that needed to be repaired. The technician arrived quickly and was extremely knowledgable. He explained the problem with my leak in plain language. The repair was fast and the price was very good. I never had a feeling he was pushing unnecessary parts or repairs. No long winded service contract sales pitch either. read more

This was the worst service I have ever received. This company deserves 0 stars. I called them because I was having issues with my hot water heater. They charged us $111 for coming out and said they would call us back and left. I had to keep calling them to get answers. Long story short, I ended up going 2 days without hot water and calling another plumber. Beacon was not prompt and they ripped us off. I would like my $111 back, but I'm sure that won't happen. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. They are very shady and tried to charge us lots of $$$. They're tech even said "you guys have money" - when he quoted us ridiculously high quotes. Two separate issues, two separate times. First encounter was with a cac system. Tech came out to trouble shoot a non working system. Told me the unit was shot and $2,500.+- to repair. Called another company for a 2nd opinion and $120. later the system was working perfectly. My understanding is their techs are paid commission on any sales they can make. Some incentive for misdiagnosis. That or incompetence. Shame on me second boiler repair. Tech came out to check non running boiler. Replaced some parts and did a thorough check. I received a reprt saying everthing was working properly. Two days the system went down again. Tech came back out and this time I was told it needed siginificant repairs??? It was winter and I could not afford to not have the work done. Again parts needed at significant cost. I have no doubt commission is paid on boiler parts also. Just be careful and get a second opinion. I have no confidence you will get a "fair shake" from them. read more

Giving this company one star is too high a rating. I have a system 2000 furnace that gave me a problem so I called Beacon, why I'll never know, to send out a "tech". I asked if their techs were certified to work on my system and was told all techs were trained to work on this system. They sent out some big young guy who sat down on a chair in front of the furnace proceeded to cut and splice every wire in the control box. Nothing happened. He then proceeded to replace the circulating pump between the furnace and the water tank after my insisting their was nothing wrong with it, it had hot from the water circulating through it and you could feel it was running. It still was not working. He decided rather than swap the pump back to the original one we would just leave it as is. After spending at least five hours or more he decided to call another tech, an older guy who took about twenty minutes to have the furnace fixed. He left and the bid dummy gave me the bill for $769.00 exactly for what I will never know. He unnecessarily used about ten wire nuts. That was it for material. Why I gave him a check or even thought of giving him a check I should have called the office to complain. To this day I still regret it. It happened a couple years ago but it was totally robbery. I make sure to tell everyone when talking about furnaces or ac units to be sure and avoid at all COST Beacon. The incompetence is amazing. I hope for Beacon's sake they got rid of this flunky. read more
