We had a lovely dinner at Shagbark last evening. Enjoyed the fried green tomatos as appetizer and the cantalope salad was delicious. The entree I had was the Shrimp and Grits it was probably the BEST I've ever had! There was a nice flavor to the rue, the sausage was delicious. Before you read on... just take my suggestion and go ahead and book a reservation ... you will not be disappointed. Book your reservation through Yelp... if they don't have your time available request to be added on the wait list and they will text you if something opens up. That is exactly what we did and we got a spot. We went for brunch with our two kids and can't wait to go back for dinner. This is my fifth new place to try this week! We pulled up to where Shagbark is and we were pleasantly surprised by how much has been added to the area. The last time we were here was when Southern Season opened... we were actually there for lunch while I was on maternity leave for my daughter 2.5 years ago. At first, it seems like there is only parallel parking... but then you realize there is a parking lot in the back. Note that if you park in the parking lot you can just walk through the breezeway in the middle since the entrance to Shagbark is within the breezeway. Don't do what we did and walk around to the front where it says "Shagbark". When you walk in, it definitely exudes fanciness... my husband and I kind of felt a little underdressed as we were both in jeans... I'm thinking if we go back next time we may dress a little nicer... regardless it didn't stop us from enjoying our yummy brunch. The place definitely gives off a slightly rustic feel too. The restaurant is pretty spacious. I can't say that this place is ideal for children... but this doesn't stop us from coming with my daughter who is 2.5 years old and my son who just turned 7 weeks yesterday. They don't have slings for infant car seats though they will flip a high chair upside down. For drinks I got a Bloody Mary (One of the best Bloody Mary's I've ever had... the skewer of goodies is definitely the best I've ever had from any place that offers skewer of goodies with their Bloody Mary), my husband got the Micheleta (which was a mix of Mexican beer and other liquor with some spices that rimmed the drink) and he got some other bourbon drink which was also good, not sure of the name since it's not on the sample menu online. Our waiter was awesome... I think Caleb was his name. So helpful... both my husband and I love suggestions as we are often between things... we like people to be honest with us and give us their opinion. He was perfect. We were between the sticky bun, apple fritter or the chicken fried oysters. He said the sticky bun is the best he's ever had... so we didn't hesitate and went with it. My husband, daughter and I also agree, it was probably the best sticky bun we've ever had as well. The sticky bun is crisp on the outside and soft and gooey inside... they best part was it wasn't super sweet, we love the hazelnut topping with orange drizzle... seriously delicious. I'm not even a big fan of orange flavored things and I loved it! Keep in mind that it is one sticky bun... not as humongous as a Cinnabon but good size. My guess is less caloric than a Cinnabon too which is almost 1000 calories! We ordered biscuits with butter and honey for my daughter.... she ate a good deal of the sticky bun so only ate a little bit of the biscuit... but both my husband and I enjoyed a bite of the biscuit. Great texture... with a hint of sweetness and super flaky. It comes with two large biscuits. For our meals I was between the Chicken and Waffle and the Duck Hash, our waiter said that between the two the Chicken & Waffle is more filling but both are good. I went with the Chicken & Waffle since I'm kind of eating for two. The waffle and chicken were both super crispy (you get two waffles imagine half a Belgian waffle and two large boneless pieces of fried chicken that looks like it was rolled up somehow into a roulette and fried. The syrup it came with was delicious not super sweet which I like). Can't say it was the best Chicken and Waffle I've ever had but it was good. My husband was between the VA Ham dish, Hoe Cakes and the Trout... our waiter said Trout with no hesitation. Seriously it was the best Trout I've ever had... it came with bernaise sauce... so good. I think next time I come back I would get the Trout myself or try the duck hash! Visited this restaurant in Richmond VA on Christmas Eve. I arrived earlier than expected and they were extremely nice enough to accommodate. The food was delicious from the appetizers to the main course. Had to end up boxing up a good portion of the main course due to how full we were from the delicious appetizers. Honestly for how expensive the meals are here I expected more. My salmon was dry and while I understand some accommodations are hard to make with certain dishes, I had asked bacon be left out of my roasted Brussels. I was instead served plain steamed Brussels with none of the flavors, and they were beyond soggy. I had been looking forward to trying this place and I gotta say it was a huge let down in terms of food quality. Easily something I could have made at home and saved myself 50$. I would have liked to have seen some smaller plates or appetizer options. That being said, the ambiance is nice. We sat out on the patio and it was relatively quiet while we enjoyed our wine. Just wished I would have stopped my order there. Perhaps an off night, but not sure I'll be returning. read more

What a horrible experience I had here as a local Libbie Mill resident it pains me to write this review because prior to my last Shagbark encounter I loved this place - the food and the service however my most recent visit did not measure up in either category. First off there is a bread service, but the bread they served my table was as hard as bricks. Apparently they do not inspect the quality of food before service. Then they conveniently ran out of the special although they were still advertising it so we ordered something else. The fish we ordered in place of the special was served as dry as the oven it was cooked in. Again no quality inspection of the food being plated. I wish I could make up all of these mishaps but I cannot. What is worst is the server was not compassionate about these issues rather she was annoyed and appeared to rush us out the door when it came time to settle the check although there were other tables still eating. Here is a diners tip for the restaurant, no one comes out just to send food back. As you can see by my profile I travel and dine out frequently therefore I know what stellar service is. After the number of poor executions, fine dining restaurants typically comp the entire bill and invite you back however last night the management team decided to take a different approach and only subsidize the bill. Well guess what this just cost Shagbark previously loyal customers, future referrals, and ongoing group business dinners. read more

My favorite restaurant in Richmond!! Every dinner I've had here has been superb. The pork chop is a must. Their menu changes frequently but I love how they feature a few unique ingredients every night (I've tried things that I don't usually find at other restaurants)! They also have a robust wine list. The menu changes seasonally so I will not detail the meal (I am, alas, a few months late posting this review) except to say that every appetizer on the table was excellent, every cocktail potent without being obnoxious, and every main, both meat and fish, was well conceived and executed. We had been warned about small portions, but honestly I did not feel this was the case. It's pricey, but not out of the realm of other top tier spots in town (L'Opossum, Heritage, etc.) Service was excellent -- attentive and engaging without being intrusive. I first came here in Nov 2016 (courtesy of Yelp) and thought it was absolutely fantastic then. Shagbark still delivers with food, cocktails, ambiance and service. The only thing that has changed is the ease of getting a reservation or seat at the bar! You cannot go wrong with the raw options or pretty much all the mains (as you can see from the reviews). My one protip: Save room for the homemade, whipped honey butter. I was told the chef actually harvests the honey from his own bee hives! The butter is simply DELICIOUS. I eat so much bread when I'm at Shagbark because it's basically just a vehicle to get the butter into my mouth. :D As always, thank you Yelp for the solid find. read more

This is for the poor service I got on a recent phone call to ask about the option for Gift Cards. The lady said, yes, come on in and we'll get you a gift card. Like, yeah, no problem, I'll just pop right over there but make sure I come when you are open which is only for dinner time...I think not. When I asked about the 'on-line' option, she said, yeah, no, we don't do that. When I asked why not, she said ' because you can come in the store and by them. I told her I was not close by and because of the limited hours it would make it very difficult for me to do that. She said 'well you can always call us before you come and see if someone is here'. Still not a good option for me. I asked why no on-line option, her response was 'well, people buy them and never pick them up'. OK, well that doesn't make sense to me either. So, I guess you are doing such a great business, on-line gift cards are not part of your customer oriented business model. My friends won't be seeing you anytime soon. read more

We were with our daughter who is her middle twenties and she ordered a glass of wine and our server suddenly thought she was a member of law enforcement and demanded ID, which certainly altered the mood. Went to Shagbark for the first time for my cousins birthday dinner. Atmosphere is great. The restaurant is beautiful. I started off with the Vidalia onion soup which was absolutely amazing. Almost more like a chowder/potato soup than the typical onion soup. They also bring out a plate of breads with fresh butter... YUM. I love fried oysters so i had that for my entree. Cant lie... I didn't really like them I thought they would be fried much harder than they were. The Johnny cake was not tasty either. My mom had the filet special so I taste some of hers, great. Steak was cooked perfectly. I don't think anything was wowing enough for me to ever go back (plus the menu is pretty limited) but I am glad I got to try it out. I do recommend at least one visit but view the menu to make sure there's something you'd enjoy. read more

Oh my gosh this might be my new favorite restaurant in Richmond (rivaling our go to Boathouse). We actually went back one week later after our first visit because it was just that good. The whole experience was 5 stars - the restaurant itself is so gorgeous inside, the waitstaff were friendly/ attentive, and the food..... amazing. We started with the oysters- super good - and the bread with sea salt butter. I ordered the tuna which was hands down the best I've ever had (which says a lot !) the sauce was so good, I'm seriously dreaming about it, ha! My fiancé ordered the burger and ate every last bite. I have a feeling we'll be spending our summers out on the patio drinking wine and enjoying more delicious eats read more

DH brought me here for my birthday. It certainly met all the qualifications for a celebratory dinner - fine dining, beautiful decor, plus it met my husband's key criteria of having a parking lot. While waiting for our table to be set up, we had a quick cocktail at the bar. DH had a bourbon on the rocks and I had their NOVA Traffic, which struck me as a variation of a Sazerac. Delicious. Once we were seated, we had a difficult time deciding between the regular and the specials menu. All of it looked wonderful. We decided on a dozen of the oysters on special. Fresh, briny and delicious. For our entrees, I had to have the special rib-eye, cooked rare with a crust of shiitake mushrooms, blue cheese, garlic and herbs, served on a bed of roasted fingerling potatoes. It was mind-blowingly good. DH ordered the seafood pasta from the regular menu. He never orders pasta but could not resist because it was full of shrimp, mussels, and calamari. He especially loved the sauce, which the menu describes as a "creamy shellfish emulsion". DH described it as richly amazing. At the end of all this, we were entirely too full for dessert. Too bad too. That bourbon ice cream sounded like something to try. I would like to say a special thank you to our server, Virginia. She was absolutely lovely, friendly and thoughtful, without being intrusive or cloying. She made our dining experience a most pleasant one. Wow! Ate at Shagbark last night in the main dining room. The atmosphere is gorgeous and the service was Stellar . Our waiter , Talal (forgive the spelling) was exceptional - the courses were perfectly timed and he knew the entire menu like the back of his hand. He was attentive and friendly as well. The food was incredible . The fried oysters and mussels were delicious appetizers. I had the rockfish and it was prepared perfectly and my husband's pork chop was as well. Absolutely everything that a fine dining experience should be. World class service, exceptional menu and food quality, and an outstanding beverage program. The place is also a beautifully decorated space and I really appreciate that it has it's own parking lot, so you don't have to walk around like an Israelite wandering in the Sinai desert for 40 years, like you do with some RVA restaurants. The pork belly appetizer and the She Crab soup alone, are worth travelling here for. I love that we decided to split their rockfish entree special, and it arrived in 2 plates, evenly split, both garnished and decorated beautifully. The rockfish was perfectly executed like I like, with the skin on and crispy and the white flesh flaky and delicate, and cooked not a second too long. Great job team Shagbark! read more
