Shagbark is my neighbor, and I mean that literally, I hear them when they wrap up nightly, and I have visited several times over the years. Overall, I'd say 8/10 experiences have been fantastic, so I'll give them the full 5 stars. There was one point where they really ticked me off, so I didn't visit them for a full year, but then I tried them again and they've been great ever since. My evergreen favorite dish to order has been their flounder. It's consistently good, aside from that one time I referenced. While I like the jerk salsa prep, I would love for them to bring back the parmesan crusted version - that was top tier. On my most recent visit, I switched it up and ordered their short ribs. Holy cow. My friend and I sat at the bar. We each ordered one. The bartender was audibly stunned to see that we both finished our plates. Like, he made a comment about it. But dang that meal was insanely good. I try to avoid using the phrase "best I've ever had" but....maybe!? Their cocktails are great as well. I most recently had their prized Shagnog even though I don't like bourbon or rum, and WOW, it was good! Their salads and desserts tend to be great too, and I've heard excellent feedback on their wine list. Service is overall good. Expect to pay a pretty penny. That short rib dish I referenced was $49. It's a great special occasion spot and it's also just nice to sit at the bar. Comfy seats. I'm a fan.

TLDR: good service and food. Not on top of my list to return. The restaurant is decorated very nicely. Beautiful chandeliers, outdoor/natural ambiance/atmosphere. Super ample parking available. Limited cocktail menu. Good wine list. All dishes were plated nicely. After you order they bring a bread plate. The potato rolls were out of this world and I would've bought a dozen to take home if I could! Everyone agreed. The rest of the bread plate was fine. The menu seems to change/update with the seasons. It is not an extensive menu, and they were willing to make minor adjustments, such as a different type of rice on a given dish. Appetizers: The clam and corn chowder was wonderful. I would go back to have that. I just wish there were a couple more clams. The Caesar salad was very large, like a whole head of romaine lettuce. My friend said it was extremely peppery, but he enjoyed the salad and the dressing. His wife had the other salad and said she enjoyed it. Hubby had the crab cake and said it was very good. It is a normal size crab cake so could be shared for an appetizer. Entrees: I Had the flank steak. It was cooked to order and I really enjoyed the accouterments served with it. The potato was very good and I liked the bits of apple I came across mixed in with the Brussels sprouts. Hubby had the chicken dish. He raved about the puree that was under the chicken. It was served with a bunch of raw spinach, which seemed a bit strange. Friend had the pork chop and it was very large! Cooked to order and he really enjoyed it. His wife had the tuna dish and said it was good. She was not raving about anything though. Dessert: I tried the sticky toffee pudding and it hit the spot. Enough to share after two courses and bread. Friends shared the chocolate chess pie. It was not what we expected and they said it was very good. They raved about the banana ice cream that came on top! Service was good, though the server was not very personable. Very business-like and did not make recommendations, which was disappointing at a high end restaurant. They did keep our water full and checked in as often as needed. Overall it was a pleasant experience. We left full and having eaten a good meal; however, we all agreed it's not on our "must return" list.

This restaurant was amazing! It was a vibe, from the music, the staff, and the food. Emily and Rachel were our servers and they offered great food and drink selections! The roasted and fried oysters were magnificent (some of the best I've had in the city). My husband and I will be back again for another date night adventure!

The ambiance is very nice, cozy and clean. The food was not "it" for me. The pork belly app was tender indeed but the cold sauce on top made it underwhelming. The hominy or "grits" tasted like paper mache. For the pork chops, the server asked me if I wanted it medium well I told him since it was pork, I would prefer for it to be well, but not burnt however, as you can see in the picture, it came out charred on the edges and dry in the inside, the macaroni and cheese that it was served with reminded me of Annie's mac & cheese that you would buy in a box. After I told the server I did not like my food. He did offer me something else, but he did not seem very happy with me. The butter however that was served with the bread was amazing. Best butter I have ever tasted in my life. Proscecco was a good brand and good serving nice and nice price point. I would go back for the bread and butter and wine.

We had an interesting meal here. The staff were really friendly and let us enjoy the bar an hour before our table was ready. Highlights were the chicken fried oyster starter and the lamb loins in the main were delicious. Opportunities: The fried green tomatoes were a confusing dish because it came with shrimp & blue cheese, but I couldn't taste the cheese. The braised beef special had three strong flavor profiles (corn, fennel, and braised beef) that required them to be eaten together to make sense, due to them competing on the plate. Lastly, while the lamb loin was the best meat of the evening, we were bummed how the veggies it came with felt like over cooked stir fry pieces covered in a brown sauce that didn't impart much flavor, just visual appeal. We had a great time but just wished the food rose to the beautiful decor and service of the restaurant.

Absolutely amazing! This spot has been on my places to try when I visit Richmond and it did not disappoint!! The atmosphere was fairly relaxed and chill and it wasn't super busy. However, I do recommend making a reservation just to ensure you have a table. The food was absolutely delicious!! Keep in mind that their menu does change so my entree may no longer be served there depending on the season. Everything was absolutely delicious and just perfect. I especially loved the scallop entree I got and their pork belly was perfection. The Duck Breast was so succulent and the pork chop was just amazing. Overall, this is a really wonderful spot with delicious food and a great menu that is changed occasionally so there's always something new to try! I highly recommend popping by if you're in the area and looking for a nice spot to have dinner!

We have chosen Shagbark a handful of times over the years and always enjoy our visits. This outing went exceptionally well because it feels like they have figured out how to lower the volume level so you can have a convo without yelling. Absolutely love their natural element aesthetic with the wood panels and the clean but cozy feel; even the bathrooms are aesthetically pleasing. We started out the evening with some "shagnog" and a classic old fashioned. Their signature eggnog cocktail was the way to go. The nutmeg meringue made the spiked eggnog feel delicate and classy, especially in the coupe glass. It was actually too good bc I drank mine way too fast and forgot to take pictures! Before our appetizers came we received some complimentary bread and salted honey butter which was pretty awesome for how it tasted and that we got for free. Complimentary bread is not happening much these days. We actually got three different varieties too. Cornbread, thyme roll and a spicy chipotle bread. For apps we did the ceviche and the fried green tomatoes. The ceviche was done very well with a nice acidity and several levels of flavor. The fried green tomatoes were also very good and probably could've been eaten on their own without the tomato jam, but that was a nice touch. Really loved the salad and sliced almonds that went with it. For dinner, we ordered the herb roasted filet of swordfish, the rosemary garlic grilled beef tenderloin special and the crispy skinned Chesapeake rockfish. All three of us really enjoyed our entrées completely. Almost so much that we didn't want to share lol. My swordfish was done perfectly; the smoked Surry county sausage and the Hanover field peas prepared ala Hoppin John style that accompanied was delicious. Slightly on the salty side, but didn't stop me from cleaning my plate. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the tenderloin special and could not stop talking about the gravy (foie gras emulsion) and the blackberry veal jus. Having had one bite I agree it was very good. My father-in-law really enjoyed his rockfish and was impressed by the cornucopia of ingredients that went with it underneath that included a candy roaster squash puree AND a red curry coconut cream along with mushrooms, bok choy and peanuts. Sadly we were to full to partake in dessert but it's something to look forward to on our next visit. Def saw some stuff I want to try.

We had a great time celebrating a birthday at Shagbark. It's an upscale seafood and steak restaurant in Richmond. Only available reservation was 5:00, so we decided to dine like early birds for the evening. I ordered a local passion fruit cider - it was crisp and flavorful. My partner ordered a special eggnog based cocktail that he raved about the entire meal. For entrees, we ordered the chicken and the salmon. The chicken had a crisp bacon- like topping that was delicious. The salmon was perfectly cooked, though I skipped on the grapefruit garnish. The restaurant itself is stunning - beautiful chandeliers and light fixtures. The art work on the walls is a bit eclectic but overall lovely atmosphere.

If you are in search of an intimate dining experience with a calm, serene environment then you should give Shagbark a try. I opted for appetizers as a meal. The Cesar salad was good, but could use less char because it had a burnt after taste. The fried oysters were amazing! I would highly recommend them 10/10. The oysters were good and tender and the sauce was flavorful. The cocktails were also a good balance of alcohol and mixers. They weren't too strong or overpowering.

My wife and I celebrated four years of marriage at Shagbark on 3/16/23. After a less than stellar experience at Midlothian Chef Kitchen I put a lot of pressure on Shagbark to make up for another restaurant's complete failure. I'll cut right to the chase; Shagbark is now my GOLD STANDARD for fine dining in Richmond. As a matter of fact, in 2 days (8/23/23), we are dining here with our son to celebrate his 18th birthday! The reason who chose Shagbark is because the entire experience was flawless from start to finish. It starts with the wonderful hospitality of our server. He set the entire tone for the evening. He encouraged me to move out of my comport zone and order a drink with a bit of hair on it. I'm glad he did talked me into it because really liked the drink. We ordered two starters which were fantastic. One was a special which were these fire roasted peppers with pecans, onions, and a delicious sauce. Our second appetizer was the crispy Chesapeake Bay chicken fried oysters. That app was by far the best. Everything about the dish was perfectly balanced. For our main entrees my wife ordered the Parmesan crusted filet of flounder and I had the cast iron seared duck breast. Both of our entrees were spot on. This is exactly what you would expect from an executive level chef. Lots of places in Richmond serve good food but on this night the CLASS and hospitality of the staff really stood out. Thank you Shagbark.

The amazing Raven was our friendly-helpful-happy server made the evening fun. All tables in dinning room were full. The short ribs were excellent & the duck breast. Great list of desserts: they are known for sticky toffee pudding which we both ordered. Different & deeelicious! "This place is really hopping" my friend Robin said.

I ordered a Philly cheesesteak and a Greek salad, which was a satisfying combination. The lunch crowd was lowkey and relaxed and I noticed about four people pull up and break out their laptops at the bar to work while they ate. My late lunch snaked into happy hour, so I ended up ordering a cocktail and a key lime pie for dessert. The pie had a delicous graham cracker crust and tasty key lime flavor; however, I was pretty stuffed by this point so I couldn't finish it. Happy hour was really bumping with a great crowd. They were quite busy that evening, but that's not my problem, nor his... There was a server handling the dining room area and I think that was all I saw. They really need better staffing and MUCH BETTER MANAGEMENT, as running out of a popular digestif in a popular hotel really isn't acceptable.
