I passed by this place so many times and always assumed it was a BBQ spot. After looking it up on Yelp, I realized I was completely wrong and knew I had to try it. I'm so glad I did! The decor was absolutely adorable--chic, cozy, and the chandeliers added such a beautiful touch. The food was amazing from start to finish. We loved everything we ordered, and there wasn't a single dish that disappointed. The steaks were perfectly cooked, the sides were delicious, and the cocktails were great too. $76 for a prime ribeye that tasted and looked like it was boiled and riddled with inedible gristle is what you'll find at 1870 restaurant. There was no seasoning on the meat and chewing through some pieces felt like chewing through a leather shoe. Potatoes were ok although the primary flavor was heavily peppercorn focused and tasted reheated. The mashed potatoes tasted like they came out of a box. We've come here in the past and the food was better, several menu items tasted and looked like they've changed. Maybe they have a new chef working? Be warned if coming here to eat. Specifically, this past Saturday we went there and got the duck. Both of the members in our party of four got food poisoning from the duck. While we have been to 1870 before, It was our first time in the speakeasy and we really enjoyed the vibe. It's got a low noise level so makes for a great space to have a conversation. We started out with the MCK and the Handsome and Wealthy cocktails. Both were delicious. The MCK has a buttery taste with some chocolate bitters and the H&W was refreshing bourbon drink with honey, pineapple, lemon, and blueberries. For starters, we did the scallop en croute and the seasonal butternut squash soup with croutons and crème fraiche. Again both were delicious. The butternut squash soup was probably one of the best we've ever had and the scallops were very unique with a pastry puff over top a shell and sun-dried tomatoes and wine cream sauce. For entrées, we got the Scottish salmon with a truffle butter and carrots for side. We also got the filet with an au poivre sauce and green beans for a side. Both exceeded our expectations. The salmon was cooked perfectly and the carrots went really well with the salmon. The truffle butter was not even necessary bc of the buttery carrots with cumin and pine nuts. The filet was cooked perfectly and paired with a gravy like au poivre sauce we would certainly order again. The green beans were fantastic and went with everything. On the Food: 6oz Seared Filet Mignon with garlic & Herb compound butter. Served rare, (even though I ordered it medium rare at the chef's recommendation), but I personally didn't mind. The butter was a major highlight. It was fresh, rich, and paired perfectly with my steak. Melted in my mouth, solid 8.8/10. 15 oz Seared Duck Breast paired with Au Poivre at the waitress' recommendation. An absolute fantastic choice, the portion was hearty and the duck was perfectly cooked. Extremely tender and moist, my husband loved it and I enjoyed it too even though I normally don't go for duck. He particularly enjoyed the fat cap. 8.65/10. Roasted Carrots with Cumin Honey & Toasted Pine Nuts. I feel like they were just starting to get the fundamentals right with this dish but ultimately missed the mark. The carrots themselves were delicious- well cooked, great ingredient sourcing. Seasoning left a lot to be desired. It would have benefited from at least double the cumin and some form of additional spice/depth- my pick would've been to add harissa & a pinch of sumac. They started out with all of the right elements, this just ended up falling flat. Still ate the entire thing- the toasted Pine Nuts were delicious 6/10. Steamed Broccoli, glazed with butter and parmesan cheese. Sourcing was again phenomenal on the veggies, the florets were very fresh. Slightly uneven steaming with some pieces much crunchier than others. Flavor was delicious. 7/10. Dessert: Classic Vanilla Creme Brulee with a beautiful little pistachio macaroon. This was surprisingly more flavorful than expected- on both the creme brulee & the macaroon. Given the subtler flavoring used at dinner, it was a pleasant surprise and I appreciated the commitment to the bit. Paired with their signature Vanilla Infused Espresso Martini which was perfectly balanced. 9/10. Not pictured: Caesar Salads- quite disappointing. Full length romaine lettuce that we then had to slice up ourselves. My lettuce was very wilted, husband's was slightly bitter. Maybe a bold take, but if I'm paying $14 for a salad, I shouldn't have to chop my own lettuce at the dinner table. Parmesan quality was good. 2/10. Ambiance: The restaurant itself was beautiful, decorations were a lovely nod to the 1870's decade including impressionist style paintings. Service: Staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and thoughtful. This was my first visit to 1870 and expectations were high. We have a restaurant list with our friends and every few weeks we make a reservation at one on the list. 1870 has been on the list a little while so we finally made the reservations! TLDR: The restaurant ambiance is nice, the food was good, the service is not bad, just not 5 star. Let's start with the atmosphere and dining options. It's an old house, so there are a few "dining rooms" to choose from. When you make a reservation they ask you which you would like. We chose the Bass Dining room and give it 2 thumbs up. This was on the second floor, in the back, with our 4 top and one other table that had 8 people. The noise level was fine. Our table had a really bad wobble so we had to ask for something to put under the base of the table to make it steady. The other dining room upstairs is one you have to walk through to get to the Bass room and had a few more tables so seemed a bit more crowded. The bar is actually also on the 2nd floor and was dark and cute from what I could see. Downstairs is the main dining room and it did seem noisy as we walked by. It is separated from the entrance area by a curtain. Note the entrance area is really small and tight. Definitely happy to not have to wait there. Now on to the food! Appetizers/Starters: They do bring a serving of bread and butter. That butter is magical, seriously good. I think it's honey and salt that makes it special. Do note if you want more bread to eat that butter with you pay extra for a second serving. 1. Burrata - out of 3 of us, 1 person really enjoyed this. The other 3 of us thought it was a bit bland. The roasted grapes and related juice were good, but difficult to grab and put on the toast with the burrata. 2. House Salad - lacked dressing 3. Butternut Squash Soup - This was the soup du jour and was very yummy! It was served with garnishes in a very hot bowl, including a creamy cheese or cream of some sort, then the servers poured the soup at the table. The flavor and texture were very good. We would order this again. 4. Lobser Bisque - This was DELICIOUS!! It is served en croute and the serving size is VERY LARGE! There were chunks of lobster, creamy bisque and the flavor was on point. It is a very rich dish, but sooooo good. Entrees: This is where the kitchen shined 1. Filet - 2 of my people had the filet. One with hollandaise and one with the Garlic compound butter. Both steaks were cooked to order and very tender, though one steak was cooked unevenly with both medium and medium rare parts. Everyone enjoyed! 2. Duck Breast - My friend ordered this and I tried it. I've never had duck before and this was seriously delicious. Cooked well, had a compound butter on top and the duck texture was like a steak. 3. Pork Chop - I ordered the pork chop. This is a HUGE chop! It was cooked well. I was not a fan of the au poivre I ordered with it and if I ordered this again would go with a compound butter instead. Sides: The sides were large enough to share and we enjoyed them all. My favorite was the green beans, which have bacon! My friend really enjoyed her carrots. The creamed spinach was good and the potatoes au gratin were also very good. Dessert: 1. Blueberry Lavender Cheesecake - definitely floral in flavor and was enjoyed 2. Creme Brulee - always a good option at an upscale steakhouse 3. Bread Pudding - my favorite and was seriously yummy Service: This is where I felt the night was lacking. Our server did not proactively make recommendations, though when asked he answered. Note - they ask you to order your appetizers, salad/soup, main entrees and dessert all at the same time. This is to keep you in their 2 hour dining window. The courses do come right after each other with no break/down time in between. My main problem here is that the servers were not clearing away one course before they brought the next. When the soups came we had no spoons and had to ask twice. The mains came out without clearing the appetizer and soup plates, so we had nowhere to go with the dishes on the small table. The servers did not interact much with us. Maybe it's me, but when I go to an upscale, expensive restaurant, I like to have the servers engaged with us at the interaction points. I also expect them to anticipate needs. Overall, this was a nice dinner and night out with friends. It's nice to have this type of restaurant in Midlothian. I will go back at some point I'm sure. read more

Beautiful French bistro themed restaurant from the wonderfully talented Chef Dunlap! Everything is expertly cooked, classic and seasoned perfectly! Portions were bigger than we anticipated given our experiences with MCK, so I'd scale back the amount of food we ordered. The sides were definitely larger than we expected. We had leftovers:) Drinks are unique and delicious! There are 3 different seating options. There's a fancy seating at tables on the mid floor. The upstairs features a slightly more casual vibe with a bar and high top tables (still super classy!). And there is a cool speakeasy in the basement. You can get all the same food and drink options on any floor, but I do believe that during their happy hour time, the upstairs has some specific specials. One of my favorite happy hours south of the river :) I went twice in the last week and the service is top tier. I tried the lobster bisque which was phenomenal, even though it was pricey at $20, would order again. Also tried out their seasonal butternut squash soup which was velvety, creamy, not too heavy, and comforting. The beef tartare was delicious too on happy hour, however it is smoked, just a heads up! I personally am not a huge fan of smoked items but it was really good and the yolk on top made it luscious and rich. Their fried chicken sandwich (also happy hour item) it amazing, definitely something to try during HH and on Tuesdays when it's at $8. They have a few different floors: basement is their speakeasy called "foxhole", main floor is where the more fine dining is, and their top floor is their full bar area and private rooms. My wife and I recently had a date night at 1870 on a Saturday evening. The main dining area upstairs was full, so we were seated downstairs in their speakeasy area--which turned out to be a cozy and inviting setting, perfect for a relaxed night out. We started with the oysters and the smoked beef tartare. The oysters (half a dozen) came with horseradish and a small bottle of hot sauce. They were sweet, briny, and fresh--everything you want in a good oyster. The smoked beef tartare was solid. While it was well-seasoned, I didn't quite catch the smoky flavor as expected. It was served with potato chips, but I think it would've paired better with grilled bruschetta or toast. For our entrée, we split a 20 oz ribeye steak along with a side of roasted carrots. The steak was cooked closer to rare than medium-rare, but once we tasted it, we didn't mind at all--it was incredible. Perfectly seasoned, melt-in-your-mouth tender, and so flavorful that we didn't even need the horseradish crème we ordered on the side. We thought we'd have leftovers--no chance. Easily the best steak we've had. The roasted carrots were also a standout--roasted to that ideal sweet spot where they were soft but still had a bit of bite. The only minor issue was the cumin--it was a bit too dominant for my taste, but that's a personal preference. We ended the meal with a vanilla crème brûlée. My wife loved it; I'm not a huge crème brûlée fan, but I still had a few bites and thought it was well done. If there's one area for improvement, it's the cocktails. I had a Boulevardier, which leaned a little too vermouth-forward and didn't use clear ice--a small detail, but one that matters in a fine dining setting. My wife's "Pretty in Pink" was vodka and rosé-forward but got a bit diluted by too much club soda. Overall, we had a great experience. The food was excellent, the setting was charming, and we'd definitely return--especially for that ribeye. read more

Really nice experience here this evening. Staff was welcoming and pleasant, attentive and not hovering. I ordered a 6oz filet with blue cheese and a soft shell crab add on. My only complaints would be that my steak was a bit overdone, but too tasty for me to say anything honestly. And for $28 that soft shell crab was tiny.. they should have given 2 for the price. My starter lobster bisque had a lovely crust- croissant like in texture, bisque itself was ok. Maybe wouldnt get again because there are cheaper better bisques out here but nice to try. My cocktail was a spicy margarita essentially and VERY well made, nice and spicy.. well balanced. And the blueberry lavender cheesecake was a 10/10. I will definitely be back here to dine. This just happened on 8/8/26 at 6:30 pm. My wife and I just left this restaurant. We arrived and were seated in the basement bar area called The Speakeasy. When we arrived in the basement bar there was one older couple seated at a table and 3 people at the bar, pretty much empty.. The rest of the tables were all empty. Initially, we were told all the tables, maybe 8 or 9 tables in all, were all reserved for the evening and we would have to sit at the bar. We were fine with this since never didn't have a reservation. They were able to move a crate of glasses just out of the dishwasher out of the way to make space for us to sit at the bar. After 10 minutes, the bartender offered to take our order. As we were about to order, the hostess reappeared and told us we were in luck, they just had a cancellation and we could be seated at a table. We took our table and she poured two glasses of water out of the carafe on the table and left. 5 minutes later another couple came in and sat at the table next to us. 5 minutes later the hostess came back and gave us menus. Waiter eventually made his way over and we placed our drink orders. 1 glass of Rose $10 and a Stella $7. 10 minutes later we received our drinks and ordered our dishes, lobster bisque $20, cauliflower steak $25 (the only vegetarian option) and I ordered the house hamburger $25. 10 minutes later a couple was seated at the table behind us. The server brought out a lobster bisque to the table next to us, even though we were seated first, whatever, we were not in a hurry, who cares, we didn't mind waiting. Then the table behind us, who was seated 30 minutes AFTER we arrived and 10 minutes AFTER we placed our food order, also ordered the lobster bisque, and Immediately received it. We all immediately realized the food server brought out the lobster bisque we ordered 20 minutes before had been sat on their table, The nice couple behind us even said to us, "I think they just brought your bisque and set it on our table, do you want it?". Very nice of them but no, I didn't want the bisque that was delivered to the wrong table, and I politely declined the offer to take the bisque off of their table. 10 minutes go by and the waiter must have realized the bisque was delivered to the wrong table and HE TOOK THE BISQUE FROM ANOTHER CUSTOMERS TABLE AND IMMEDIATELY PLACED IT ON MY TABLE, AFTER 10 MINUTES SITTING ON ANOTHER CUSTOMERS TABLE!!! He even said to me, "I'm pretty sure they didn't touch it" and asked them, "Did you touch it?" and they said "No". WHAT??? Now, I'm pretty sure it's a health code violation to sit food on one customers table and TEN MUNUTES LATER, take it and put it on Another customer's table, wether they took a bite out of it or not. We politely declined the now ice cold bisque which had sat on another's customers table for 10 minutes and the waiter took it back to the kitchen.Almost Immediately, the manager brings back the same bisque but the managers long beard is nearly touching the top of the bisque and he asks us why we didnt want the bisque. We calmly and politely explained the situation, we didn't want the food sitting on ANOTHER CUSTOMERS TABLE FOR 10 MINUTES and we asked for our check. He said, "oh, it wasn't explained to me like that". Then he took the bisque back to the kitchen but seemed to be quite perturbed. He responded with our check and said that he had taken the entrees off of our check. The entrees we had NEVER received, he was nice enough to take off of our check. No apology or so sorry for the mix up. We paid check and On the way out if the door our waiter had a huge smile on his face and said "thanks for coming in tonight, have a wonderful evening". PRETTY SURE THIS IS A HEALTH GODE VIOLATION. Train your staff not to place food on the wrong customers table, 10 minutes later, pick it up after and place it on another customers table! Clearly, he assumed there is nothing wrong with this. Train your manager to apologize to a customer when this happens. Wanted to love this place, WILL NEVER GO BACK THERE AGAIN. Fun fact, this building has been here since 1870; hence the name. When you first arrive, you quickly realize how small their parking lot is and, when you get inside, how packed everything is inside. Not sure if a reservation is required, but I'd say you always should because this place was very busy for their 2nd week after opening. The atmosphere is a blend of modern chic and very old. It gets very loud inside because the rooms are generally smaller and they pack as many tables as possible inside; so there's a lot more people than there probably should be. Because of so, walking space is very limited. In the Jewett room, which is already small, had 1 larger table and 2 smaller tables inside. That is way too many for such a small room. Because of so, we could barely hold a conversation without shouting because all the other tables were so loud (from the other guests). After being seated, we ordered the 8oz Filet Mignon with Roasted Garlic sauce and Butter Whipped Mashed Potatoes, Hanger Steak with the "Carmelized Onion" compound butter and Potatoes Au Gratin. For dessert, we got the Blueberry-Lavender Cheesecake and Cinnamon Bread Pudding. Bread and butter were served about 5 minutes before our food arrived. Both the Filet Mignon and Hanger Steak were delicious and no complaints. The mashed potatoes were plain looking, but tasted great because you could definitely taste the butter. The Potatoes Au Gratin were really good, I recommend this over the mashed potatoes, because this has great texture (think thinly sliced potatoes) with the most delicious buttery flavor. The cheesecake was good, a tad on the too-sweet side, so choose that if you have a sweet tooth and really like blueberries. The Cinnamon Bread Pudding was delicious and we vastly enjoyed that more. There's a sauce with it that really tops it off. Service was good, but not as good as we'd expect from a place charging these prices. Our waiter was kind, but we noticed he checked on all the other tables and spent time chatting with them almost the entire time; while only stopping at our table to get our order or fill our drinks (once). Not too mention, we had a reservation, arrived 10 minutes early, and still had to wait 40 minutes before even the bread was served. All in all, the food was really good, but the atmosphere and service left room to be desired. If there were less tables and wait times were shortened, I'd enjoy this place more. Recommend this place if you're looking to try a new "fine dining" place, but wouldn't recommend if you place importance in service and atmosphere, too. read more

Ordered $300 worth of food and drink and in the middle of eating the carrots start chocking on something, cough up a small piece of steel wool shaving(Brillo) that cut up my throat, could have swallowed and killed me. I start to get more frustrated because it feels like an insult to offer $9 for something that could have caused serious internal bleeding and argue with the waitress when she asks if we want deserts or the check. It was ok. Wasn't worth the hype. Service was lack luster. Appetizers and drinks were good. Our entrees took 30 min to come out after appetizers and then were not hot, and "roasted" carrots were raw. We asked for whatever they could get bring out with the steaks since had already waited so long to replacethe carrots. We got microwaved broccoli with a sprinkle of parmasean. We were disappointed with all the hype we heard. Maybe it was an off night for them, but we won't be back. read more

Absolutely phenomenal dinner experience. My partner and I went here for my birthday dinner, and the whole staff was very friendly and welcoming. The tables and vibe were very cosy and comfortable. The food was all 10/10, the pork chop was what I ordered and it was divine. The steak my partner ordered was probably the best sirloin steak I've ever had in my life- melt in your mouth tender, I was genuinely surprised how good it was. While the pork chop was great and just what I wanted, this place really does their steak well so I wouldn't skip on that. Every side and dessert was equally delicious- green beans with bacon you really can't go wrong ordering from here. The beef tartar was also probably the best I've had, just really refreshing and light and flavorful. I don't usually leave reviews, but I really feel like this was probably one of the best meals I've ever had, not a single things I tried I wouldn't order again. I've been to a lot of French style restaurants for pretty much every special occasion in my life, and this one far exceeded every other one I've been to (at least in San Francisco). Don't skip this place, I'll definitely be coming back here next time I'm in town :) read more

Wow.... Just Wow.. I live less than a mile from them and funny side story I know this building well as my Boy Scout troup used it as well. We even used Jewitt-Bassett Hall (as it was known) for a thanksgiving dinner over a decade ago for a big family event. So when I saw a restaurant was going to be in it, I wanted to go. That said, first thing to know, not one thing bad. Seriously I think Yelp should let certain reviewers give a 6th star. We were a group of 5. Not one of us had a bad meal. We specifically each choose a different side dish to share as well. The staff was so super attentive as to be ALMOST overbearing. They threaded the needle perfectly. Dinner was taking a while (we did complicate matters with no one ordering the same thing). But it all came out fresh and hot. Also after we had been waiting a while they brought out salads to tide us over. (We had not complained or even so much mentioned the delay). Add to that when it was time to serve us, they brought dishes out as a group with at least 6 minimum waitstaff involved. It was an amazing touch. Now that said some extra context. We were totally underdressed. We dressed as if we were going to any "regular" resturant and my brother in law who had just come to town to do training at Gregg Adams was still in military fatigues. That mattered absolutely zero to the staff.. and they still treated us as well as the couples around us dressed to the 9s for a big celebration. Speaking of which we were asked what celebration brought us there as if we needed one. We had none, friends and family in town was the reason. Also we are foodies, and I have wanted to try them out. Also for context, the brother in fatigues is a master chef for officers in the military. He was impressed. That all said.. were they expensive. Yes One of the biggest bills I have gotten at a restaurant in a long time (probably why they asked about "celebration" and the extra waitstaff). Was it worth every single penny?? Absolutely !!! If your a foodie and want to go there for the food ? DO IT Not a foodie and looking for a special place to take a girlfriend or wife for an anniversary ? DO IT They claim to be a French inspired steak restaurant and they knocked it out of the park. That said vegetarian options, covered and amazing and seafood options were unreal. Suffice to say, compared to Tobacco Company, or any other 5 star in this entire metro area. They killed it. This is litterally now my favorite restaurant in all of the Richmond area. read more

This place is so fabulous, if you want a fine dining experience, with high-quality food, this is the place. There were four of us, we all ate something different and every thing was. It is expensive, but seemingly worth the cost Jacob was our waiter, and one option that isn't on the menu are his mashed potatoes. Jacob's mashed I believe they called it their mashed potatoes with bacon and Parmesan cheese and they were just as good as he referred them to be he was fabulous as well very attentive and catered to us nicely regardless of the request we tend to be a bit high maintenance, lol we can't wait to go back and try something we had mostly steak, but the salmon and the pork chops and the lamb also sounded amazing too read more

Husband and I decided to check out 1870 for an anniversary celebration. Venue is gorgeous, love what they have done with the place. Very nice in a unique way, not your typical dark steakhouse. Service was great. They actually read the reservation that we were visiting for special occasion and had note on the table for us. Bread and butter, we got distracted. The butter was so yummy and you will be tempted to get a second basket. Don't do it. Not because it is not delicious. IT IS. But because it is gonna stop you from enjoying other items. We shared the Lobster Bisque and it was delicious! Main courses were amazing. Loved the way the menu is organized to select protein, sauce/butter and then add enhancements. Because we ate too much bread, as much as we wanted dessert. We just were too full. So definitely need to do a trip back. read more

Had a great date night experience a couple Saturdays back. Aidan did a nice job taking us through the menu and provided exemplary service. My guy and I shared the entire meal - lobster bisque, Caesar salad, 6oz filet with shallot Merlot butter, mashed potatoes and cream brûlée. All with a bottle of Cabernet. Everything was top notch! The restaurant was not overly loud, parking was easy. Definitely recommend! read more
