    Fresh halal being prepared
    Camille R.

Over a decade ago, there were food trucks that sell Halal combos for $2-$3 along Queens Blvd so I was surprised to see that Shah's Halal has a similar offering! When I saw the $2.99 Happy Platter special, i just had to try it! You have a choice of lamb or chicken served on top of yellow rice and sprinkled with bits of lettuce. The size is smaller than the ones sold in food trucks but it is just the right portion to satisfy my Halal food cravings - the ones from the food trucks are bigger and I end up overeating. The lamb was moist and very tasty but the chicken was dry. There was plenty of meat and rice for the price is. This place closes late at 3AM. Add this to your go-to spot for late night/early morning cheap, yummy eats!

Delicious halal food, very speedy service and clean restaurant! The staff recommended the chicken and lamb combo! I've had bigger portions for cheaper at a halal cart though but this is a great tasting fast option!

I ordered their 2 piece chicken only for take out. They were quick. The chicken itself wasn't too bad. Again it was on par with Church's fried chicken. The skin was crispy and not too dry. It wasn't too expensive. The store was brightly lit and pretty clean. I can't speak for the other food but the fried chicken was ok.

Lamb over rice, chicken over rice or combo over rice $7.99, no drink included. I found this a little odd because most of the Shah's haha stands always include a soda. I ordered two combos over rice without the salad. I found their halal food to be on the sour side which I found a bit weird. I had it with white sauce, green sauce, and hot sauce. At first I thought maybe the green sauce made it sour but I order halal with green sauce at other Shah's and other halal stands and it was never this sour. I still prefer the Shah's halal outside of Queens College. Bigger portion and includes soda.

This time I had the mushroom and onion hummus, which was a little watery and only came with one small piece of pita for a large bowl. I also got the fries, which are still actually pretty good. The reason for the steep downgrade aside from the dwindling food quality and the so-so drinks, is the service this time was just ATROCIOUS. Bushwick service has gotten kinda cruddy overall these days because so many places have this transplant hipster vibe where they just can't be bothered, but this guy acted annoyed and put out to even be there. It was not great last time, but this time was astonishingly bad. He took my order and as soon as my food came out, he disappeared behind a screen and didn't come back out unless someone came in the door (which was only a couple times). Never checked on me. Never asked if I wanted another drink (my mint julep was awful, so moot point I guess). I had to wait for him to emerge when a to go order came in for me to flag him down for the check. Probably the last time I come back here.

Staff were nice and attentive. The hummus and falafel plate was good. I really liked the rice and veggies - the flavors paired well. Maybe too much hummus for the portion ratio? Decent price for what you're getting, maybe $40 including tax/tip(?) for two of these plates.

Unfortunately, because of a slow night, they didn't have their full bar setup, and we're only serving beer and wine. So, I put my Yelp expert hat on and looked up nearby places with mezcal cocktails, and discovered this place. The food and drink menus for this place immediately reminded me of La Shukran and similar restaurants in DC, and I couldn't help but wonder if they were under the same umbrella. Turns out they aren't. They had a fantastic hip hop playlist going for their last hour of the night. Dozens of records were on display on shelves, and the staff were really cool behind the bar. I had the Lavashak sour and the Turkish Delight cocktails... Both had really unique flavors and less common elements like apricot, saffron, pomegranate, pistachio... And my sisters drinks were great too! The food looked delicious, although neither of us were hungry. I would be eager to return and give everything a try. The vibes were nothing short of immaculate!

I changed to the Swick, their skin contact orange wine and stayed with that for the duration. It was a fun, surprising wine that augmented my meal. We shared the dip sampler of hummus, muhammara and labne which comes with their superlative Turkish Pide. We all ordered and enjoyed the Ali Nazik Kebap, broiled minced lamb on a searing hot metal skewer that be warned because they didn't say a word about it to us! We also ordered the lamb meshweh which features braised lamb shoulder with sumac onions and pickled slaw on a pita. It was hearty and well seasoned and nothing remained by the end. We were having such a good time I forgot to keep taking pictures! Two orders of the dip sampler, three orders of the lamb entrees and two rounds of drinks came to about $100 a person. Despite slightly scorching our hands we had a great experience. Would cheerfully return!

The staff was having their dinner. One guy was putting gobs of food all the way in his mouth with his hands. Then when he finished eating wiped his nose with his hand and went straight back to packing our food!! I was TOTALLY GROSSED OUT! So I knocked on the door and let the one guy know and he made the dude go wash his hands and they gloved up. But it begs the question: what goes on when no one is saying anything to them about washing their hands and safe food handling??! Then, I ordered via Uber Eats and they sent me 2 lentil soups that were all water and no lentils. So I called them to have a new delivery and they couldn't manage it. The owner then said that I could just have a credit the next time I ordered since no delivery people were available and I said ok to that. So I called today and asked for him. Guy on the phone claimed he was the person I spoke to and asked what I wanted to order. So I order and he says I have to pay! Turns out he was not the owner, which was a waste of my time. He then said he was actually the manager and would reach out to the owner about it and call me right back. 2 hours passed, so I just ordered from somewhere else. A couple days later, I was craving hummus again so I dropped by on the way home. ANOTHER dude wiped his nose before taking my order and I had to say something!!! The food is really, really good. But I would not order takeout because orders are often wrong and they make promises to fix things that they do not keep. Also, you want to watch them while your food is being prepared and make sure they are not doing things like wiping their noses and not washing their hands then handling your food! I have now witnessed this TWICE! UPDATE: Owner read my review and offered to make it right. But never did when I called him to order again.

There was roasted garlic in the center looked great, but it didn't punch up the flavor as much too much. The pita was fine, but a bit dry and plain. For my main, I had the Israeli Breakfast with a side of pastrami smoked salmon. The eggs were soft-scrambled very well, and the salmon was exactly how I like it--fresh and buttery. I swapped the pita for seeded sourdough, though it looked and tasted more like standard buttered toast to the point that I double-check edwith the staff to confirm it was the sourdough. The Israeli salad was finely chopped and provided a nice balance to the meal, though it was a bit watery and lacked a flavor punch. The labneh with za'atar was thick and rich and good in small doses added to bread or the eggs. However, I think this combined with the other food was the source of the meal ending up being overwhelmingly salty, leaving me reaching for water for the rest of the day. I also sampled the chicken shawarma--the flavor was great, though it was a bit oily from the paprika oil and felt a tad pricey at $28. On a brighter note, the hot mint tea was fantastic, with hot water served over a generous amount of fresh mint leaves for a refreshing and flavorful tea. Despite the saltiness this time around, I'd return to try something else, like the fattoush salad with salmon.
