That's a popular halal food cart truck in Astoria! It's very big too and got 3 guys working hard and fast! Once I got the sandwich, I opened it and saw sauce and some fries and pieces of eggplant. Never had a halal sandwich with eggplant from other trucks. This is my first time. The sauce did not look white at all and it was very good! Sauce is not thick and somewhat runny and tastes like vinaigrette. Chicken shawarma was very good and thin pieces so it was a lot easier to chew. Lettuce was very fresh. It's been a while since I ordered from here, and the chicken chunks are drier than I remembered. I always get the mixed meat brown rice platter with red and white sauce, and while everything else was near perfection, I did notice that. I also tried ordering via call for the first time - the meal was ready by the time I got there and paid, and it wasn't as hot as I remember so I wonder if that impacted the taste and texture. I have been coming for years and it's always delightful to have the eggplant and fries in my platter or sandwhich. Whenever I order gyro or lamb elsewhere it's that frozen product. I had the beef shawarma the other day and it was real gyro. That alone deserves 5 stars in a world where there's too many halal carts serving ambiguous lamb and other meat. Love the inclusion of fried eggplant into the dishes here, really delicious and moist. The value is also impressive. The falafel options are not the standout for this truck, perhaps. The falafel itself could have more of a crisp edge and the sandwich could perhaps be engineered better to account for falafel often being on the drier side. I'd suggest 1 less falafel, much more sauce and vegetables (there have been only 4-5 cubes of tomatoes included at each visit), and no fries perhaps. It's also packed primarily bottom-of-the-pita upwards, so you're not able to have a bite that has more than one ingredient at a time, for the most part. Not enjoyable to eat pure dry plain falafel on its own for half the sandwich. Went more than once to ensure it wasn't just me, and asked for adjustments that I thought would help, but unfortunately this wasn't the place for me for falafel. I appreciate how much people love it for their other specialties, and how they are clearly generous (perhaps they give such a small amount of vegetables in favor of giving folks more meat and falafel, but just doesn't work best for the vegetarian menu items). For the longest time, this was just food cart on the corner of 34th Ave and Steinway. It was without a proper name, it eventually was known on Yelp and much of the interwebs as "Halal Food Cart" or "Halal on 34th." Fast forward some years and now it's a full blown food truck with a staff, fancy LCD menus, and a robust customer base to boot. After finally branding as Mahmoud's Corner, they've still continued to push their initial name (#1) And despite all the success, they've managed to keep their quality up and become one of the highest rated street food businesses in the borough. The food truck itself is distinctive, in the sense that it has really cool mural art, the aforementioned LCD screens, and a kitchen spacious enough for 4-5 guys to work in unison. Mahmoud is usually taking orders out of the window and handling all the cash / credit card transactions. Prices have definitely gone up over the years (we're getting close to $10 per platter) but it's hard when the food is so tasty. He's a super nice guy and is really great about honoring substitutions all while playing it up for all of his loyal fans (which includes me!). It's hard to go wrong with any of the food items. My favorites here include the mixed grill, which has a little bit of all meats. Their kofta is excellent and the chicken shawarma, as well as the lamb platters are great picks. I don't think many folks are here for the beef burger and hot dog, but I've seen a fair number of customers go for it. The sandwiches are fairly popular and go perfectly well with their crispy fries. The white + tahini sauces are some of my favorite condiments out there. One thing I appreciate about their platters is the fact they serve a couple of varieties of rice (brown + yellow) along with veggies but more specifically green peppers and eggplant. It's not mind blowing per se, but I don't see a lot of Halal carts / trucks offering the variety. Very few folks talk about their falafel, but I think they do a pretty good job compared to the nearby competition. I always consider it a treat to be able to come here. For a long time, it was strictly takeout but they have provided sidewalk chairs / seats for folks who want eat immediately after ordering. They have also fully embraced the delivery circle of apps as they're available on various online delivery platforms. I'm so happy to have found this gem in Astoria and this truck will definitely be my go-to from now on! The chicken was cooked to perfection - not too greasy like you typically get from the other food trucks. The platter also had the perfect ratio of white sauce and hot sauce. Although a little pricey at $9.00 for a mixed plate of chicken and lamb, I really enjoyed the food.
