Trivia: I was looking for a particular book after reading Horse by Geraldine Brooks. What book of a different title, but by the same author won the Pulitzer? Excellent service and selection of books, journals, and other intriguing book related items (like a cool display of puzzles). I went in hoping I might find a new planner/journal. Had no idea I would uncover so many awesome options. Quite the Leuchtturm collection and options. Also, I was looking for just one particular book and they not only had it, but it was easy to find. I love a good bookstore and you had me at "Shakespeare". This shop has a nice selection to choose from and things are well organized so it is easy to browse. The only thing that put me off was the staff person. No smile, no welcome, just a brusque attitude. I felt like I was bothering him and I didn't even have any questions, just paid for my purchase. S&Co is one of my all-time favorite neighborhood book stores. It's got the three secret ingredients that make it magically delicious, not just by Montana standards, but in a far wider context: (a) Selection (b) Location (c) Variation SLV, and some pixie dust tossed in, for good measure(*). (a) Books in the twenty-first century are collectibles to cherish, not consumables to use and abuse. Size/price are not the decisive factors anymore. Selection is. You want to enter a space and within 30 seconds or less find something fascinating. And then you want to spend additional time (measured in minutes or even hours) perusing the shelves and display tables to see what's out there and recommended by people in the know. I mainly collect history books and non-fiction, especially travel writing and essays (in which Montana authors like Rick Bass specialize). Here I find books I easily recognize (but don't own), and I inevitably stumble across newer releases or classics that I had simply failed to discover before (like "The Way West" by A.B. Guthrie or the deVoto edition of the Lewis and Clark journals). S&Co is really great at simplifying the book trade down to its essence. The only places I can compare it with in terms of selection and stylish layout are (i) Dog-Eared Books in the Mission District of San Francisco (a favorite haunt of Dave Eggers) and (ii) the Ivy Bookshop in Roland Park, Baltimore (which is great for children's books). There are other, bigger bookstores I like, too, esp. near universities, but they tend to be on a larger scale and require more effort to navigate, like (iii) Kepler's Books in Menlo Park, CA or (iv) Pegasus Books in Berkeley. You can grab an espresso and almond croissant from Le Petit Outre around the corner, have lunch at the Silk Road, get take-out pizza from the Bridge, and then eat it with pints of beer at Kettlehouse. Maybe some granola from Bernice's, too, if it's breakfast time. But you satisfy your book appetite here. If it's Saturday, you cross the Clark Fork and shop at the farmers' market, stopping for a weekend reader on your way back home. It's that convenient, that simple, that much a part of the local fabric. (c) Books are alive, because they contain useful knowledge - about ourselves, about others, and about the world we share in common. They are not museum pieces. They need to change with the seasons, like the fresh produce at the market, the coffee beans at your local roaster, or the beer on tap at your neighborhood brewery. Here, depending on the season, you'll notice different books in the front window and on the tables, either recent releases or award-winners or something from a local author or poet. I've actually come across books I've assigned for my courses at the University of Montana in the history section, and found some that I've ended up using the next semester. Or books written by friends in the profession, which is always cool (even if their dust jacket photos are hilarious). Selection matters. You wouldn't want your grocery store to keep the same vegetables on display, would you? You demand freshness from your food; so too with your reading materials. Bad customer service on replies via email. I had a question about not receiving a signed book copy at the Stephen King event and was very curtly responded to with "Hi. They signed 400 copies only in this was made clear in all event announcements." We received a follow-up email the next day apologizing for this email which is basically a poor excuse for an apology for the first email. My wife and I will never go here and or attend any event they try to sponsor ever again. read more

I don't usually write reviews. However, having read some of the negative reviews, I felt that I should talk a bit about my experiences at this shop. First of all, Shakespeare & Co. is a top notch literary book store. The History section, alone, would mark this store as the best in the city. Wander over to the Fiction section, and you will see a lovingly curated selection of literature. This is a serious bookstore for serious people. You probably won't find Dean Koontz, etc., but you will find Saul Bellow, Cormac McCarthy, James Baldwin, and, of course, Shakespeare. No one in this store has ever been anything but helpful and kind. When I mentioned to the owner that the middle book in a trilogy was missing, he replaced the book, and called me to let me know that it was in. A small kindness, but indicative of how the store operates. This is my neighborhood bookstore. I agree with the reviewer who compared Shakespeare & Co. to Dog Eared Books in San Francisco, which used to be my local bookstore. I cannot recommend Shakespeare & Co. highly enough. If you are a serious reader, please disregard the negative reviews, and visit. You will be most pleasantly surprised. And, perhaps even delighted. read more

What a great store. Excellently curated, helpful staff, perfect for browsing. And what booklover doesn't LOVE to browse?! I worked for years as a bookseller in the famed Three Lives Bookstore of Greenwich Village (what a store) and have toured the bookstores of London and other great cities (Powell's, anyone?!) so believe me, I know great bookstores when I see them. What a snob I sound like! But just to say, Missoula is incredibly lucky to have a world-class bookstore like this one, and if you're visiting, it's well worth the stop. Awesome selection, friendly staff and regular events all help to make this my favorite bookstore out of a number of great ones in Missoula. Garth and the rest of his gang at Shakespeare & Co are amazing. Neighborhood bookstores are so few and far between these days. Thank goodness for these guys! We had the most amazing time roaming the floor here. We came for the Stephen King event that they put on, and I have to say, I was incredibly impressed. The logistics of such an event are massive and this little bookstore knocked it out of the park, with class and style. I highly recommend this store to anyone who loves books. Went here today with my girlfriend in hopes of finding a cool bookstore and while it is, I was very offended at how I was treated. I am a wounded warrior and had one of my shirts on and the young woman with red hair behind the counter was incredibly rude to be based on my veteran status. I attempted to engage in conversation and she said "I don't speak to Trump supporters". Don't support Trump, seriously fuck that guy, it was very disrespectful that she made assumptions based on my veteran status. We'll take our money elsewhere. read more

I try to buy local as often as possible, which is why I ended up here looking for a book for my son. I ordered a little over a week before Christmas and was told one would be in before Christmas and the next was on order. I just picked this book up today after a call last Friday. You do the math on how long that took, and don't ask how long the other is on hold because I don't know and neither do they. So I go ahead and purchase the one that had come in because we'll I don't want to be a total bitch and leave them with a book. So here's where my other problem comes in. The book alone was $35 here. Both books online combined are $36. I get how some costs are not the same for some vendors but an increase that significant is not justifiable. Perhaps millionaires shop here and that's how they manage to stay in business. I unfortunately can't understand why someone would want to pay double for a book simply because it's helping a local merchant. So I'm out money, didn't get one of my books (you better believe I cancelled after paying double for the first book, and several weeks to get a book I could have gotten in two days long before Christmas came and went. I wanted to like this place but not when they are charging so much. Either find another vendor for your books or lower your own prices. read more

Aside from having an excellent selection of books, not only classics and nationally known authors, Shakespeare & Co. also boasts excellent representation of its local authors, and does a fabulous job of sponsoring events to promote their works. Garth was recently gracious enough to offer his space for free to host an event I organized, a symposium about race relations, that was not even book-related. And he was a most genial host. The event went smoothly, and it provided a very comfortable gathering place. read more
