I just moved to san rafael to help care for my girlfriends father whom just graduated from hospice. For celebration i decided to remodel his backyard into a fish pond with waterfall. Being that i know nothing about the subject of ground cover and landscaping materials, i went in to Shamrock excited to learn and purchase. I opened the doors with a smile and great posture, however left Feeling like i knew less than when i arrived, coupled with poor posture and disappointment. The staff is obviously miserable and hate their jobs sitting down, attempting to help, but instead projecting being inconvenienced and Not capable of helping others. That was last week. So i tried again today. Same thing. Different people. I will still buy materials there, i just now know what to expect. Unhappy employees, resulting in un happy reviews. read more

Although any business has its set backs, Shamrock (Vulcan) Materials is extremely good at doing what we contractors need, providing quality materials. My recommendation for dyi ((and professional) buyers is to remember to do their homework prior. There are so many videos and websites to assist in educating yourself, that it should be easy to get your questions answered before you arrive. To expect sales or counter help to have the skill, knowledge and time to educate you (on the fly) is a bit unfair. Especially in this climate of shortages, closures and apathy. I would like to thank this business for being conveniently located, well stocked and price competitive in one of the busiest and most expensive counties in our area. read more

Jack was great, was real weird at first because I didn't know what I was ordering and I thought it was as easy as ordering something from McDonald's but of course it wasn't. Came in looking for calstone material for a retaining wall that I needed to pick up same day. They said I couldn't but I already contacted their supplier and knew I could so had that handled already. One of his co workers complained about "Mexican drivers blocking his driveway." Which was concerning seeing that I'm a minority from Oakland and ended up in Marin for a random reason. I'm Somewhat concerned about stereotypes when entering non urban high profile areas like Marin, that guy reaffirmed the concern, but Jack keep his eye on the target of getting my order together so I could get out of there. My husband and I dropped by Shamrock on DuBois in San Rafael on two occasions this week. The first time, we encountered Jack, a surly, patronizing, unhappy employee whose job it is to (presumably) answer your questions and provide information. The first time we encountered him, we excused his awful behavior by telling ourselves that everyone has an occasional bad day at work. When we returned to Shamrock today, we encountered the same surly, unhappy individual. Jack was visibly annoyed to have to answer a few questions we had about the pavers and other materials we planned to purchase. How is it that anyone with such toxic customer-facing skills is placed in such an important position to interact with the public and answer their questions? We left the store immediately thereafter and called Marin Landscape in Novato to ask if they carried the same pavers. They did. Shamrock San Rafael will continue to lose business when an employee like Jack treats customers with such contempt. Thankfully, there are other landscape material options in Marin County. The pity is that Shamrock has an excellent selection of concrete and stone for landscape projects. But, today, they lost our business. I strongly suspect this isn't the first time a prospective customer was so turned off by such ugly customer service that they took their business elsewhere. read more

Shameock rocks!! Great place to get all types of rocks for your landscaping needs. They do deliver for large orders so you may want to inquire about their policy on delivery. Otherwise, you can go pick up the rocks yourself if you're doing smaller landscaping projects. Crushed gravel comes in bags so it's easy to pick up and go. read more

If the concrete delivered doesn't fulfill the properties requested by the purchaser, why should the purchaser have to buy it?. The buyer certainly has the right to send the concrete back and not pay for it after testing at the job site demonstrates deficient material (as required per the specifications of a project). Beware that Shamrock will deliver "payback" in the form of delays and/or denial of service (claiming full schedules) and with their monopoly in Marin County, contractors have limited options for getting this type of material for their construction projects. read more

I needed some gravel right away for laying out a base for a paver path. I picked up the phone and their dispatcher said they could have a yard of compactable base rock delivered that day, I appreciated the prompt service. A few hours later their driver showed up to my jobsite (steep and narrow road). He was cautious while backing in, taking care not to hit some low hanging tree branches. Their team has been on my street all week. Shamrock trucks parked outside. Saturday morning I wake up to construction noise, the sound of cement truck's engines, trucks backing up.."beep beep beep" and find that they have completely blocked our apartment complexes carport. A few nights ago, one of the trucks was parked in the evening, lights on, and one of the construction dudes was peeing on the street, facing the truck to hide what he was doing, but I could see the stream of urine - right in front of the apartments. Slave Labor in Marin. Wow! There it was in Shamrock's yard. The 500-pound Connecticut Bluestone stepping stone called out, "Take me home and place me in your front walkway! Now!" I had just completed my stone walkway two months earlier. No matter, I would simply tear-out my newly constructed stone slope and put in this magnificent step. I am perhaps the only person I know who makes impulse purchases in a stone yard. Shamrock Materials delivered it to my driveway along with two types of gravel that I had actually intended to order (so, the stepper rode home for free). When the truck driver finished unloading everything with his forklift, he surveyed the gravel and the stones piled in my driveway. He said, "I see one problem here." He pointed to the heavy stepper. "Well, the Egyptians figured out how to move these things 5,000 years ago, so I guess you can, too." In Marin, we are fresh out of Egyptian slaves. So, yes, I did it, too. Good for me. read more

GO TO PLACE FOR BUILDING MATERIALS IN MARIN Pricing is decent for ready-mix concrete and landscaping materials. Not the cheapest but what elevates Shamrock is the great customer service. You get a live person fairly quickly, usually only after one layer of automated receptionist. The concrete dispatch team in particular is very helpful and try to accomodate the desired delivery time. The showroom people could be friendlier, especially to women. I am in the construction industry (project manager), but when I've gone in there, I get the "Marin-county rich housewife" treatment until I say I have an account with them. read more

I called Wednesday for a Friday delivery of 3 yards of gravel. Great phone service and quick response. No nonsense to schedule. Brett, the delivery guy, was extremely professional and dropped three yards in a tight driveway within inches of exactly where I wanted it. I highly recommend these guys. read more

This is the first 1 start rating I have ever giving. I have been a costumer at Shamrock for the last 4 or 5 years and have never had a problem until the last couple months. My first bad experience was last month when I went to rent a U-cart. I have a 1996 Dodge cummins pickup that had been a work truck for the last 8 year. Loren the manager said the sticker on my hitch was not clearly legible and he needed to be able to clearly read if the hitch was rated for 10000 or more. I pointed out that you can still see the 5 "0s" and I had never had a problem in the past. He just turned around and walked back in the store saying "I need to be able to read the whole number". So instead of buying 6 one yard u-carts from them I had Rich Readimix deliver the concrete and a pump. My second bad experience was this week. Again I when to rent a u-cart but this time the job was smaller so I needed was ok with being limited to only 3/4 of a yard. I needed to make 3 trips to complete my job. I picked up the cart at 8:30 (they start filling carts at 9) no problem, second trip at 10:30 again no problem and then the last trip at 12:07 major problem... I walked in the showroom at 12:07 and went to pay for my last load. Loren said we don't rent u-carts after 12. I stated that the cart is already hooked up and that it takes longer than 7 mins to hook one up. He said he starts sending people to lunch at noon. Next customer... So I had to take the u-cart back to the job site, rinse the cart and bring it back. I still needed concrete to finish to project and during my drive back from the job site. I decided not to do anymore business with Shamrock as long a Loren is still the manager. I dropped off the cart went straight to Home Depot, bought 52 bags of concrete and finished the prep work for the big pore in two weeks. My next concrete job is just over 32 yards of concrete that I will NOT be getting from Shamrock all over 7 mins and poor customer service from the Loren. read more

Used Shamrock for a small patio project in fall of 2012. Their selection is great, the pricing good, delivery was quick, BUT - with the help of their expert staff, we wound up with about 2 tons too much, and when asked, Shamrock refused to come pick it up. It has taken me 6 months to find someone to take all of these rocks off of my hands. read more

Mixed review here: Tried to get pricing on pavers displayed on one of the prebuilt displays out front, but all they had were brochure handouts which didn't list the pricing anyways. We were recommended to leave credit card info to get pricing and then would get a call back, but after about 3 weeks of non-call, we instead were charged the price of a palette of pavers. I called back to explain the issue weeks later but due to high volume they naturally forgot why i left the card # with them. After seeking out their manager, they professionally gave us a full refund on our card. I will attempt to do business with them again. Even for the palette, the pricing was still decent. read more

Shamrock is an amazing supplier of everything "rock" related - sand, bricks, stone, stone veneer, even manufactured stone. They have this kind of scary yard with bins of different grain-size sand, slabs of different types of stone, pebbles and rocks of all sizes and a bunch of forklilfts zooming around. But inside there's a fantstic showroom with all sorts of different styles of stone for floors, walls, patios, fireplaces, etc. Since there aren't a lot of places like this that are open on the weekends, they tend to be slammed and there's often quite a wait to talk to someone. But once you get to the front of the line, the guys working there are really incredibly helpful and friendly. They definitely prefer "real" stone (which is more expensive) but they sell faux stone too so don't be discouraged. read more

I never get the feeling that I'm asking a "dumb question" - even when I'm likely asking a dumb question. There is a very, very friendly and helpful gentleman who is usually out in the yard area. This is a somewhat mixed review for Shamrock--with a happy ending. I visited Shamrock Materials several times recently to look at their display of driveway pavers. Then I drove past a house in a neighboring community and saw a driveway with the color and type of stone paver I had been searching for. I went to Shamrock to get some help to figure out the type of paver I now knew I wanted. The first salesperson was very disappointing; somewhat brusque and off-putting. I then looked for Mark Williams, a salesperson who had been previously helpful. I showed Mark the pictures of the driveway in question, but he could not determine the identity of the pavers. Then Mark offered to have one of the Shamrock field representatives drive by the house, and examine the pavers to determine the identity of this product. Call me in a few days, Mark said, and I will have some information for you. I called back several days later. And yes, the field representative had visited the property, and identified the manufacturer of the pavers. Shamrock does not carry this particular line of pavers. I asked Mark where I might purchase the pavers. Now get this. Mark said I think I know the contractor who installed those pavers. Here is his number, call him, and he can tell you exactly what kind of paver was used. 'This contractor is a good guy; if you use him, you won't be disappointed.' Well, I called the contractor and he will be meeting me to give an estimate. Of course, Mark's helpfulness and courtesy is certainly unusual, especially as it turns out that Shamrock does not carry this particular product. And I would be remiss if I did not give a shout out about his helpfulness, and recommend that if you go to Shamrock Materials for stones, pavers, etc, this is the guy you want to ask for. I mean, he knows the products and he is just perfectly courteous and helpful. Someone from the old school of customer service. read more

Wanna get stoned? Ughhh that was bad. Unlike my jokes, Schamrocks is great. Little stones, medium sized stones, big stones. Its all here. Sand of various granular sizes too. Pavers of all kinds. Need help loading? They got that covered too. No job too small (I bought 50 football size stones..or about 400 pounds worth)...and from the looks of it, they also supply the big cement trucks. read more
