THE TRAILER: "What's there to do in Willits?" Drink beer? Hang out with hippies? Drive through it? I've done the latter, but now I know better. THE DIRECTOR: Shanachie's Pub THE CAST: o Corey G. the Yelping Protaginist o Wedding Crew Invading Willits o Cool Bartenders o Crazy Drunk Lady Wanting To Dance With Everyone o Spinning Hippy Dancers o Scraggly & Friendly Cat THE STORY: * FADE IN: Bass-heavy reggae music filled the room INT. COOL BAR - EVENING TIME The bar's filled with artsy and cool photographs of people. Top notch beers line the wall behind the barkeep. Interesting people (hippies to baby boomers, Rastafarians to tattooed & pierced characters) fill the bar. * CUT TO: Group of people invading the town of Willits looking for a place to chill for the evening. They grab a nice wooden booth near the bar and window which looked onto the outside patio. Corey G. is a sucker for Belgian ales, and here he found a stellar selection of brews. He went for a Duvel. It wasn't on draft, but the Barkeep, poured the bottle into a genuine Duvel Belgian Beer Glass--ummm, classy! For the next round Corey G. had a bottle of Delerium Tremens (and yup, it was served in a genuine Delerium Tremens Belgian glass). Wedding Crew had a nice time at their table experiencing the Willits' ambiance--Spinning Hippie Dancers, Crazy Drunk Lady introducing herself to everyone with a curtsy, and Friendly Cat on the table looking cute. * CUT TO: Our group leaving Shanachie's an hour or so later feeling good and satisfied from hanging out at a cool little joint. Willits DOES have a nightlife! * FADE OUT: "Finis"

It's always a trip to come back to the town you grew up in and actually be old enough to go out to the bars, finally. Even more of a trip is going out to the bars and seeing kids who were literally just kids, rugrats when you still lived in town, downing beers all legally-like. "Damn," you think, "I am old." It's especially crazy around Thanksgiving or Christmas when every random so-and-so is back home and they all converge on the bars so all night you're like "wait, is that who I think it is? Dang, they got fat/skinny/pregnant/hot/ugly/a sex change/etc" Fortunately for me, Willits has Shanachie Pub. Offset from the Purple Thistle restaurant, the winding stone pathway and verdant garden patio effortlessly evoke a rustic cabin feel. Inside, the warm room is all smooth wood, elegant art, and an old piano tucked in the corner--truly more of a coffeeshop feel than a bar. In any case, it's a place that feels like home, with or without the ghosts of my past haunting me there.

I could get half a draft beer, there's a nice outdoor area, a cool bar cat that I became fond of, live music on Friday nights, and the staff is pretty awesome. The last time I went there was 4 weeks ago and unfortunately I will not go there again. My partner went there (he's also been there before) looking to see if I was there because I told him I was going there to retrieve my umbrella I had left there the night before. He was treated quite disrespectfully, even was threatened to have the cops called if he didn't get out of "his " parking lot. Mind you, this was during the day and my partner wasn't causing any trouble, he was just looking for me. This act alone was enough for me to decide that I wouldn't go there again. I understand people have bad days but when they are in service industry, you need to check that shit at the door before you start your shift. After all, the customer is paying their salary. Don't let my rants discourage you from going to Sports Attic 2, it's a cool place. I just can't get over the way my partner was treated.

We walked in and it was hopping with the locals. The bartender was personable and provided suggestions. He let us try the cider before we ordered. Loved the spiced apple cider They have bar food for order.

I really enjoyed my experience at The Goose & Fern. It really gives the feel of being in the UK…read more The food is delicious and reasonably priced. I sat at the bar and was served by the owner of the Pub, who is from the UK. I loved chatting with him about the pub and all the fun things that go on there. I happened to come in on Trivia Night, which gets a decent crowd! For dinner, I ordered the Braised Beef Guinness pie and a Guinness to go with it. The pie comes out steaming hot with a nice layer of browned mashed potatoes on top. There is real crust to this kind of pie. Underneath the mashed potatoes is more like beef stew. Large chunks of tender beef and vegetables are sitting in a delicious Guinness stew. On the side, a fresh salad to go with it. For $24 the portion you get is perfect and along with a good pint of beer this is the way to go. I will definitely be back to try some of their other food!

My wife and I had just visited Abbey Tavern this past weekend, a premier Scottish pub in the City, and we expected a similar atmosphere. However, the moment we showed up, we were met with great disappointment. The Goose & Fern is honestly a terrible place to watch a sports match: there was only a single TV mounted in the back corner of the restaurant, the TV wasn't particularly large, and the speakers had been turned completely off. What a bust. Although the food was decent, especially the Shepherd's pie -- which came piping hot in a small cast iron skillet, the service was downright dreadful and almost non-existent. We never received waters (or were even asked if we wanted beverages), our table wasn't given enough silverware, we were never checked on during the meal, and we were waiting around for 30 minutes twiddling our thumbs before somebody from our party finally went up to try to pay for the check. In hindsight, a tip was not warranted for the lack of service. Overall, Yelp grossly misled me on The Goose & Fern. This is not a spot I would stop by again to watch a sporting match. If you're in this part of Santa Rosa, do yourself a favor and head over to Dave and Busters down the street where they have a bunch of massive screens, tons of beer options, and service that will far surpass what you're getting here.
