Shang: Noodle House is part of the Kirin Chinese restaurant group so we had high hopes for what we were about to try. Shang: Noodle House is known for their Reishi mushroom noodle soup but there were so many other things on the menu that we didn't end up trying that out. To start, we decided to get a Radish cake with scallop to share. Grayson has been trying to get me to go for dimsum with him for a while so ordering this was a happy compromise. If you are a dim sum for dinner kind of person, they also offer crystal dumplings, siu mai, and a bunch of deep fried items. The radish cake was soft and slightly crispy on the outside. Basically what you'd expect from a restaurant that's attached to a casino. It's convenient if you're there for the casino and the food is edible. On the plus side, the location is kept quite clean, cleaner than many restaurants that I regularly frequent, and the portion sizes are reasonable for the price given the location. On the minus side, the food ranges from mediocre to bad with most dishes leaning towards bad. If your friends have dragged you where and absolutely must eat here, I'd recommend the soup dumplings. To be clear, I wouldn't recommend going here for the soup dumplings, which are thick skinned, barely contain any soup, have a tiny meatball, and are served lukewarm. But if you're here, it's one of the better options. read more

Isn't it awesome? A win-win right here. #28 is a mushroom broth with several types of mushrooms from Japan. The hand-pulled noodle itself is soft and chewy. I am really glad I tried ramen again as for some reason, I've always had difficulties eating ramen. I wasn't able to stomach even half a bowl of ramen in the past, but now that I've come across my newest discovery, I think I will only come here for my ramen needs. Exciting! Fried eggplant was fried just right. Crispy tofu had the right amount of saltiness and some crispiness on the outside and soft in the inside. What a great snack combo with my mushroom bowl! We love going to Shang Noodle House whenever we are craving for that noodle soup fix. They have quite a large number of menu options to fulfill our noodle cravings and on top of that, they have some yummy appetizers like BBQ pork and pepper salt squid that we can't get enough of. Shang is a popular spot for us because they have ample parking available there and their place has nice decor and can host larger groups. Don't get me wrong, I don't need a place to look fancy in order for me to eat there - not at all! But a Chinese restaurant with a nice atmosphere is ideal for me, especially when I'm taking friends out for dinner or celebrating an occasion. If you're on the fence about what to order. My besty brought me here earlier for lunch and Shang is located between Starlight Casino and Kirin (actually owned by Kirin). You might like this place too, if you've tried any dimsum at Kirin before (I never tried Kirin). It's a clean busy restaurant when we first walked in and couldn't get seats aside from the bar tables. We were okay with that. Menu includes dimsum, bubble tea, ramen, stirfried noodles and dimsum menu looked so expensive. Anyways I got #48 Penang Style Udon ($9.88) with Supreme Milk Tea ($4.75) and besty got #43 Grilled Pork Jowl Ramen ($10.38) with Lychee Yogurt QQ ($4.45). Our noodles were huge portion. Had great elasticity and firmness to it. Tried the pork jowl meats it was tender, but had Charsiu (Chinese BBQ pork) taste to it. I had similar toppings in mine on #48 except it had some seafood toppings with chicken. Loads of toppings and some celery and onions in it. Taste wise my food tasted very similar to Laksa, but not so much. Needed more flavours so I put chilli oil to enhance flavours. Food tasted okay overall and it was quite filling. Aside from our food, BBT was great. Soft pearl jellys, great pricing /portion and it's definetely bit cheaper than Chatime and Gongcha for sure. Not the best ones, but we both enjoyed it. This place is probably one of the best Chinese places in the city. The place is run by the same company as Kirin (which is also next door), and it shows. The restaurant is on the exterior of the Starlight Casino complex, to the right of the main entrance. Initially I thought it was just some generic noodle place (based on the name) but this is not the case at all. The interior is clean and classy. Staff are friendly and professional, and the food was very fresh and hot. And best of all, all of the dishes are NOT oily at all. (special mention deserved here) There is a sushi conveyor belt but nobody was sitting at the bar. Japanese-style mushroom ramen - Light, and not oily at all. Noodles were not mushy. Delicious broth. BBQ pork neck - sweet and tender and moist. Like BBQ pork (same honey sauce too) but much more tender. This was my favourite dish. Shanghai-style dumplings (xiao long bao) - basket of 3 for only $2.50! Juicy, with plenty of filling. Deep fried chicken wings - lots of meat on the wings, and also not oily. Asian-style burgers - made of shredded meat. Bun was toasted. Delicious. Squash soft cake - very light on the oil, and fresh. Not too sweet. Double boiled milk - not too sweet, no crusties on the edges. The place was a bit empty (maybe 1/3 full at most), but this is most likely because of the (bad) location. After a long morning of failed appointments and almost being run over by a sweet old lady, my afternoon was saved by a meal at Shang Noodle House. A restaurant beside a casino and near outlet malls doesn't usually scream 'delicious food', but I couldn't have been more wrong. The restaurant was clean and decor was casual. I was greeted at the door with a smile, the waiter who took my order was very polite and the staff member who dropped off the bill smiled and thanked me. The food was surprisingly good for what you're paying. I expected heated leftovers, but the Tan Tan noodles had a nice bounce and the broth had a spicey peanut flavor without being too strong. The Xiao Long Baos (XLB), which are steamed and filled with pork needed a little perfecting. The XLB sat on top of a thin slice of carrot inside the steamer basket and it didn't prevent the XLB from sticking. This means you lose the broth inside the XLB since it tears or rips. Not my first time here but due to my first experience with their noodles I'd rather spend my buck or calorie quota elsewhere. So when I got invited to dine here I was a bit reluctant but went anyways. We got a few dishes to share: -Eggtarts (5/5): We got these two start. Got two plates (4 piece in total). Clearly the first plate wasn't as fresh since it came immediately and the 2nd plate came 5 mins or so later. Nonetheless, these were hands down one of the best eggtarts I've had. Fresh out of the oven or not. -Shrimp dumpling AKA har gouw (5/5): Super thin wrap with diced and minced shrimp paste as the filling. These also came in two's. -Siu Mai (4.5/5): These came out steaming hot. They were good. Not best but good. Decent size with some fish roe on top. -Gyoza (3/5): I may be bias but I'm not much of a gyoza fan to begin with. My friends said they were good. What I can say is that they are slightly bigger than a regular gyoza. -Stir Fried noodle (3.5/5): I didn't do the ordering but it's stir fried noodles with shrimp, scallops, bbq and mushrooms. This was decent. Nothing to write home about. -Deep fried pepper squid (2.5/5): Not absolutely sure if that's the name on the menu but it's somewhere around those lines. These were disappointing. No flavour. No crunch. Pretty sure the menu said spicy. Not spicy at all. Even though you may see some chili flakes on top. They're just for show. -Pork chop with lobster bisque ramen (3/5): Sounds good, eh? The pork chop was tender but not my kind of pork chop. The bisque was flavourless. I did find a lobster shell in my share. So I guess they do use lobster in making the broth but it's probably watered down so much that I can't really tell it's a lobster bisque. The noodles itself were good though. It was al dente with a bounce to it. That's how I like my ramen. -Wheat germ milk tea with coconut jelly (3.5/5): I give this drink a pass even though it's a tad bit sweet and I had to order this 3-4 times before they got it write. First it was wheat germ milk tea with grass jelly. Then I decided to get pudding instead of grass jelly. It came out with pearls. I hate pearls. So obviously sent it back explaining that I got it with pudding. They then told me, pudding isn't one of the options and it's either grass jelly, coconut jelly or pearls. I went back to my original order to then find out that grass jelly doesn't come with the wheat germ milk tea and it's only for grass jelly milk tea. I then asked for coconut jelly instead. Finally they got my order right BUT they forgot to gave me a straw. Sighhhh.... took me a long while to get a server's attention for a straw. I'm glad it was in a to-go cup. I'd say skip the ramen/noodles even though they are a noodle house and get the dim sum items that might be from the Kirin kitchen. read more

Unfortunately, the soup noodles here are quite disappointing. The menu calls it "Japanese ramen" but the broth is anything but. Friend and I liked the deep fried squid appie but neither soups we enjoyed due to them being bland and watered down (spicy beef with pork soup and the lobster bisque). If you want a huge portion of a light/bland noodle soup then this may be for you. Can't speak for the other broths but I'm not eager to try them after my experience. read more

Was looking for some ramen that wasn't Downtown, Vancouver. 4 stars and owned by Kirin? How can you go wrong? We were a party of 4 and the restaurant was busy when we arrived on a holiday Monday afternoon but we were able to get seated right away. The restaurant is modern and clean so that's a good sign. Unfortunately that's where it stops. I thought the ramen was less than stellar. The soup from the Ramen in Miso Soup was bland and in the Spicy Tan Tan's case, well, the soup was so think that it was almost straight up peanut butter. The server also sold me on some spicy won-tons which were on special. Unfortunately they were tiny and not even close to what I expected. I was hoping for something more like Din Tai Fung or at the very least Beefy Beef/No.1 Noodle House. Expectations were too high apparently. The one positive thing is that the prices are more than reasonable. There's obviously a reason for that as the taste and quality is definitely lacking. We ordered: Braised beef ramen in pork broth: the noodles came in a big bowl, with beef, noodles and some veggies. It is a decent amount of food for $8. Shanghai wonton ramen in Japanese mushroom soup: this was also served in a big bowl for $8. I really liked the smokiness of the broth. Sautéed veggies ($5): this ended up being sautéed lettuce: I would pass on this. Deep-fried tofu ($5): not bad: crispy and light Including a bubble tea drink, tax and tip, the total was $33. Stay away from this place. Ordered two noodles tonight and only one came. The other one we waited for like over 30 mins. Asked waiters 3 times and I was pretty sure they forgot our order. It wasn't even busy at the time, only 3 tables customers. It would be nice if they just admitted that they forgot our order but instead they kept stalling around and 30 mins past we still didn't get our noodle so we cancelled it even though the noodle was finally ready to serve. Discovered my new work lunch joint. This Kirin owned noodle house is top quality. We started with XLB (4 for $4.28). Though I don't care for the carrot slice between the XLB and steamer, these were very good. Good soup:meat ratio, skin was right thickness. The Chinese burger intrigued me but needs a little work. I like the sesame bun but it was too oily. With a healthy does of sauce, these would be fantastic. Now the star, red reishi mushroom hand-pulled ramen. The texture of the ramen was superb. With 7 different kinds of Jap mushrooms, I didn't once think of meat. Broth was packed with fungi flavour. For $20 for 2 of us, you can't go wrong. Especially if you're a gambler. read more

I wish I could describe the food here but because of the terrible service we received and what I can only guess to be our order being forgotten, I have to give this place a poor review. It had been years since I have visited this restaurant and we figured we would grab a bite to eat here after visiting Starlight. Between 3 of us, we ordered a deep fried Eggplant dish and the BBQ Duck Spinach Ramen in Bonito Shuyu to share. We had a nice time chatting and having some of the tea (which was actually pretty good) but after having the tea refilled a few times, and realizing everyone around us who had arrived after us were already eating what they had ordered, we finally asked for an update on the food. This resulted in the waiters and waitresses finally taking notice in the fact that we did not have our food and in a few minutes, the waitress who took our order came by to provide us with small bowls and spoons and simply saying that the food is coming. There was no explanation as to why there was such a delay but we thought it was on its way, so we waited .... and waited. Another few minutes go by (and people that arrived mere minutes before our query with the waitress occurred were receiving their food). At this point, we got up to leave. One of the other waitresses came over (only because the other waiter near us flagged her over) to tell us the food is on its way. There was still no explanation, just the vague promise that this food is coming. Actually her explanation was something about how it was because of the waitress who took our order. To me, I find this unacceptable. I am assuming our waitress did not put in the order, but it still took us having to ask after patiently waiting for over 30 minutes to almost an hour for any of the waiters to notice we had been sitting for so long without getting out food. Meanwhile everyone who arrived after us was getting food in a timely manner and no one thought to check in with us. Due to the poor service (not just about the forgotten order but the fact that none of the staff noticed that we had still not received our order after so long), I will not be coming back here anymore. read more

My hubby and I ventured over the bridge from Burnaby to check out Shang Noodle House by the Starlight Casino and were pleasantly surprised. Thank you Groupon for another amazing find! There are not a lot of ramen places in our neck of the woods, and authentic or not, the food was pretty tasty, filling, and full of value. You can't beat that. First off--there is a lot of parking. I believe this is owned by the Kirin next door, and the establishment is a lot more casual, which is nice for some lunch or dinner time eats. The restaurant is roomy, and about 1/2 full when we went for dinner on a Friday night There were many couples and families. The service was actually spectacular, and we were helped and greeted by several people! A+. We presented our Groupon and we were given our choice of 53 different bowls of noodles! I had the tendon and brisket and hubby had the laksa. He wasn't too wowed by his, but mine was pretty good with a lot of tender meat, and many pieces of broccoli (nice). We also got two big cups of soy milk (you can choose hot or cold), two large vegetarian spring rolls (very crispy), two shanghai dumplings (really good!! the kind with the thin skin), and two large heart shaped mango puddings (the ones you get at Kirin!). We would totally go back to try their pan fried noodles and other side dishes. The Shanghai dumplings were pretty good. If, and I say if, we come back here, it won't be for the noodles. (The dim sum menu looks a tad more interesting.) We were often at a loss as to what kind of cuisine could have produced what we ate. We did the Groupon, so we were treated to a great financial deal on a variety of food. It's a shame their selection of pop is limited to Coke, Diet Coke and 7Up, though. The food started out with some wontons, served in a dish of sweet soy sauce with just a dash of chili oil. The wontons were on the small side, and the filling was unique (i.e., not one I'd ever tasted before), but not bad. Then came a crispy, hot (temperature-wise), chicken wing. The meat was tender, but there was nothing particularly ethnic about the coating on it. It could just as easily have been served in Hooter's. Then came the main dish. The "Japanese" ramen nearly tasted like instant noodles. And the broth, though clearly made from some pork-like substance, was thin. My husband's guess was that they used a powdered base for the broth. To make matters worse, they garnished what was supposed to be a Japanese noodle dish with very non-Japanese garnishes: broccoli and a mélange of carrots, peas and corn that had clearly been just defrosted. There was a nod to Japanese garnishes on my husband's bowl: three tiny slices of nori, but they looked pathetic in the vast palette of his bowl. Also, his egg (his order came with half a boiled egg) was boiled to death, and not such that the yolk was a soft in the middle, as it should have been. My bowl came with an assortment of meats and seafood. Some chicken, pork, shrimp and one scallop. Everything was overcooked, and the scallop had a non-fresh taste. Finally, out came what was heralded as mango pudding. It looked like mango pudding. But if you closed your eyes, the taste was somewhere between green tea and red beans. It was quite bizarre. Clearly not made with mango purée. One comment from another diner was that the condensed milk might have been on the sour side too. I don't know how that works, but... The table next to us ordered from the dim sum menu (along with their ramen), and the dim sum looked more delicious, to my eye, than what we had. Was in the area and used Yelp to search for food. Shang Noodle House showed up and I remembered that they had a groupon promotion. Was able to purchase one right away and use it. Great value - for $21.99 you get two ramens, two pop, two dessert and two side dishes: chicken wing and wonton. We also ordered squid and "gum sha" tofu. The tofu seemed freshly prepared and was delicious (almost as good as if you ordered next door at the more upscale Kirin restaurant). The squid was a bit disappointing (cold) but the ramen portion was huge with a-ok soup broth. Friendly service. Overall it's a bit out of the way for me to get to but I would go back if I was shopping at the nearby Queensborough outlets and had a hankering for Asian food. read more

As a non Asian from East Van, I grew up on Loving Honk Kong style Chinese. Soups were always The basic yummy ones, Corn, fish ma, H&S and of course Won Ton. So these Ramen noodle soups are a new adventure for me. I started with the 7 mushroom bowl. Outstanding. Good chicken wings and spring rolls. I didn't care for the sliders though. Happy hour Cans of beer for less than 5 bucks. Next visit was Won Ton Soup and 2 types of steamed dumplings. Real good, not great but worth going back too, plus it's close to home and work. I'll keep on trying new ones here and other places to get up to speed. I can't believe I missed all these years without noodle soup. I am a long time patron of this restaurant. I have gone there 2-4 times a month. I sing their praises to my friends and convince them to join me and all round, I have always been happy with both the food and the service. My experience today is why I am giving them 1 star. Today's events convinced me that the staff here really don't care about the people they are serving. My friend and I arrived at approximately noon. It was busy, as it always is every time I've been in there. We were seated right away with menus and we started to peruse. Usually, once we are seated and have looked at the menu for a few minutes, we are approached by our server to order. We waited for about 15 minutes and eventually flagged down our server. She took our order and then we waited. And waited. And waited some more. Historically, meals usually come out within 15 mins of ordering depending on what you order. We noticed that other people were getting their food, even guests who arrived after we did. After 30 minutes of waiting we flagged down one of the servers (ours had disappeared) and asked her to check on our meal. I should mention at this point that the restaurant was indeed full, the 2 servers that hadn't disappeared were running like chickens with their heads cut off. It seemed weird to me that they seemed understaffed as there are usually several people milling around. About 15 minutes after we asked the server to check on our food, my soup arrived. About 10 minutes after that, our appetizers arrived. And about 15 minutes after that, my friends soup arrived. Keep in mind that we get 1 hour for lunch and normally, can get in and out of this place well within that hour. We ate in a rush as we knew we were already late getting back to the office. My friend asked for the remainder of her soup to go. The server took her bowl and put it on the counter and there is sat for another 10 minutes. We flagged down our original server who had now reappeared and asked her to get it for us. Then came time to pay the bill. Most establishments will comp a part of the bill when there has been a complaint. Considering how much waiting and running after wait staff we had to do, I feel that we qualified. We went to pay and explained to the server the situation. Another thing I should explain here is that every time you go to Shang, you receive a 10% coupon for your next visit, so my friend and I had cards from our last visit. All we got was "So sorry, it's very busy". Yes, it was very busy. It always is and usually service isn't so poor. I dug further and tried to get at least some kind of discount. It was then explained to us that the original server (the one who disappeared) never put our order through and that's why our food didn't come out. It wasn't until after we asked for our food, that the order was placed. So it was completely their fault to begin with. As compensation, they told us they didn't charge us for the takeout container (a whopping $.50 which is also annoying since I have never been charged for a takeout container ever anywhere else) WHICH WE WOULDN'T HAVE NEEDED TO BEGIN WITH HAD OUR FOOD ARRIVED IN A TIMELY MANNER. We were then told that we were getting 10% off already. WE CAME WITH THE DISCOUNT CARD. This isn't compensation. This is nothing. In the end, because we were in a rush to go back to work, we paid, didn't tip and turned down the offer for a 10% card for our next visit because there won't be one. read more

The food is excellent! Noodles are fresh, broth is perfect (very flavourful, not too salty) had char siu on the side that was delicious. Nice decor inside, staff is very friendly. Doesn't feel like one of those dingey won ton noodle houses. Would highly recommend to try you will not be disappointed. Ate myself silly that I skipped dinner that night. Cheers! Food I have been to Shang Noodle House a few times previously. I always find their dim sum very good maybe because it is coming from the same kitchen as Kirin. Their noodles are great too with the right texture and non-greasy soup base. They are very generous with the portions as I can never finish the noodles and their price is cheaper that other places say in Richmond or Downtown. I like how they serve Hong Kong style drinks there like Hong Kong style milk tea and what not. Ambience The interior design is quite nice as they used soft warm tones and a nice light green to contrast. They also have interested light fixtures that look like tennis balls and nests which are interesting and different. Location Tons of parking and underground parking as they are located beside a casino. Service The staff is always friendly and attentive to you with a smile. They work very fast and the noodles generally comes out quite quickly. read more

We went to the Starlight Casino for dinner with the kids until we found out kids were not allowed in. As an alternate, there are a few other kid friendly restaurants close by the casino - Sports Bar, Shang Noodles and Kirin. We ended up at Shang Noodles. The restaurant was quiet, probably because it was only 6:30p and the location is out of the way - not walking distance from Queensborough Shopping Plaza. These restaurants at the Starlight facility are targeting the gamblers. The restaurant is clean. Waitresses are attentive. Looking at the menu, the prices are reasonable. Lots of choices and options on the menu. It's part of Kirin chain. For the 7 of us, the bill was $85 or $12/person - 5 adults and 2 kids. As mentioned earlier, it's a noodle house. You have many choices of noodles - ramen and udon. It's been awhile since I've had ramen. I ordered a special which includes a appetizer, noodles and drink. To me ramen should be ramen. At Shang's ramen is NOT ramen. Their ramen is an inexpensive cheap Chinese noodle sold as ramen. My brother in law read the menu, he ordered the Japanese ramen while I ended up with the cheap Chinese noodle. I was not happy with that! What did I think of the food? It's the worst bowl of noodles I've had simply because I was expecting ramen but did not get ramen. Regardless of how good it is or how perfect it is, it's going to be $%^&* because it's not what you're expecting. Perhaps I should've read the menu carefully or Shang should NOT sell the cheap Chinese noodles as Ramen. To me Ramen is a signature product or product category. It's similar to ordering Peking Duck at a Chinese restaurant. Regardless of where you go, it's almost always served is a similar fashion. How would you feel if you ordered Peking Duck, expecting Peking Duck but ended up with Crispy Skin chicken? Will I ever go back? Probably NOT. Ramen is Ramen! If its NOT Ramen, don't sell it as Ramen. It's very disappointing considering its part of the Kirin chain of restaurants. I checked the reviews here on yelp, before buying a groupon for Shang Noodle House. It was another dark and rainy night (siigghhhh, tough move for me to the Lower Mainland from the Interior), so we had some challenges even finding it until I remembered it was attached to the casino. Yep, you can see THAT sign for miles and miles... As others have commented, you sure wouldn't expect great food beside the casino, but what a great surprise!!! Our groupon gave us a meal so huge, I couldn't finish it, although my carpenter hubby powered it all down. Our server was very sweet, and helped us out with the menu a bit. I'm not sure he gets many blondies on his restaurant, but he was kind and nice. We had a fried spring roll to start. I noticed a lot of oil on the plate, but the roll was fantastic: crispy and hot on the outside, steamy lovely veggies, still slightly crisp, on the inside. Next, some lovely pork dumplings arrived. Oh what a surprise: XLB, the King of All Dumplings, if you want my opinion. Yum yum, yummy, yum yum. End of story. We were allowed to choose 2 noodle dishes, so Mr Man chose Malysian laksa soup with ramen and I got Thai tomato soup with udon, chicken, prawn and squid. Again, both were fantastic!!! Spicy, hearty, big servings with fresh veggies and fresh seafood and great chicken. We swapped bowls about 5 minutes in, so we each really got a good taste of the other, but then swapped back as we each thought we'd chosen well, but loved our own best. OK, so even though we were starting to look like The Buddha, dessert arrived next: mango pudding. Not too sweet, really great mango taste. Again, a WIN. This is what I do love abut Vancouver: although I'd rather be eating in Malaysia or Thailand or India, or, well, just about anywhere, you can find fantastic food just right here. If you are looking for service, this is definitely not a place for you. Servers are unattentive and forgetful. They do not seem to be organized. Being adjacent to the casino, it seems that patrons only come when they need a quick bite. My family and I decided to order a bowl of soup and a side dish, a quick and easy snack. We realized after 45 minutes the customers who have arrived after us were already eating and just about finished! We asked the waitress about our meal, only to find that all of the waitresses were pointing at our table and gave us a startled look that they had forgotten to put in our order. We decided to leave knowing that if we stayed we would not be enjoying our meal after being tested like that. We felt like we were ignored guests. A happy visit turned sour pretty quick. We lost our appetite and decided to go home. Not a great experience at all. Will definitely not be returning to this establishment! read more
