I just love this place. It is tiny, maybe room for 10 people total. I just find it so cute and like something you would find in NYC. Great place for a date on off hours. It also delivers so I can't tell you how many times I got their food when I was sick. The food isn't the best you ever had but it is definitely on par with most Chinese places. Though expensive. The problem for me is that typically I didn't get enough food to meet their new- $15.00 minimum for a credit card. Usually the bill was like $14.80 or something. But that isn't good enough for them. The last time I went I got a lecture on how they would let it go this time but next time they wouldn't accept a credit card. There won't be a next time. I don't carry cash with me anymore so you should probably work on negotiations with your credit card company and try to remember customers are fleeting thing. Not to mention that it isn't like $14.80 is a small amount. read more

Sat down to have lunch for 1 on a Saturday. Only one other diner in the place. Laquered plywood booths. The first cup of tea was tepid. The Japanese luncheon benot box special arrived after a fifteen minute wait. The three pieces of sushi were passable. The 9 peices of tempura (6 were sweet potatoe) were greasy. The udon noodles were silky but al dente and simply swimming in sesame oil sauce with only a tiny pinch of sesame seeds. The white rice was dry and cold. The second cup of tea was scalding. The service and "chefs" were more interested in chatting than working. This is second time I've been disappointed and won't be again--because I won't be back. read more

Not sure why so many people complain about the service here... I was seated moments after walking through the door, had a menu in my hand seconds after that, and the waitress came over to take my order as soon as I put the menu down. All I ordered was sushi and miso soup, but it was all very tasty. Can't speak to their Chinese food, but I will be back for the sushi. read more

Dining In: The actual restaurant part is small & very busy during the peak lunch & dinner hours. I wish they'd expand. The wait staff brings you a hot washcloth to wash your hands. #loveit Delivery: YES!!! Sushi: OMG YES!! Freshley made with fresh ingredients. Try their spicy salmon, unagi with avocado, green dragon, or the "sake" platter. Love love love. Chinese: Sometimes when I can't make up my mind, I order the Pu Pu Platter. Love their chicken wings, beef teriyaki, crab rangoon, etc. Chicken with Pine Nuts. Pork fried rice - oh man. * Items from the Lunch Specials - you can order it for dinner for extra $2. When I'm craving greasy, Americanized Chinese food, this place hits the spot. It's NOT where I go when I'm craving out-of-this-world Chinese food (I go to Sichuan Gourmet in Framingham for that). My favorite dish is the Orange Crispy Sesame Chicken. I've never ordered anything from the Japanese menu, so I can't comment on that. Shanghai Tokyo has the best Chinese food in the metro west area. The delivery is dependable (ie if they say it will be there in 40 minutes, it will be there in less than 40 minutes ALWAYS - In fact, sometimes we plan on the full time and it gets here in half the time!) The pan fried ravioli, broccoli and bean curd with garlic sauce and chicken teriyaki are all favorites. The Japanese menu is also good. The Ton Katsu and the teriyaki are both great. The sushi is fresh, although I limit it to the most popular choices so I know it's fresh so I can't judge everything. The tempura is just ok... As takeout, tempura can get a bit soggy / greasy and I found that to be the case. But that doesn't reflect on the restaurant! I am sure it would be delicious if eaten in the restaurant... read more

Love this place! Huge menu with an option for everyone. Good for takeout or to eat in. The staff is very friendly and make a genuine effort to know their regulars. We order from them about every other week so we have many favorite items. Our top recommendations are the Snow Mountain Maki roll, steamed Peking Ravioli, and Chicken and Mushroom. I get takeout here all the time. Food ranges from very good to excellent. The wonton soup is well above average, and while the sushi prices are a little bit on the higher side for what you get, it is usually really good. There's nothing I wouldn't recommend here and it's usually one of my first stops when I come home! read more

Sushi , Sushi, Sushi- this is the place to go in Natick. Usually get the Sushi Regular with great variety. Love their salad dressing too. Service is friendly and attentive. Chinese is very good too especially the appetizer type food and cashew chicken. Warm welcoming atmosphere. read more

Shanghai Tokyo is marginally better than decent. The food is fine, the folks who work there are responsive and respectful, and delivery has always been consistent. I took off the first star because the food is just OK. I reserve perfect ratings for places I really love. There's nothing wrong with the food, but it isn't the best I've ever had. I took off the second star because the most recent time my husband and I ate at the restaurant a couple of funky things happened. The weirdest one was that our chopsticks smelled strongly of burned wood. I have eaten with bamboo chopsticks on four continents (literally all over the world) and I have never experienced that before. The odor was strong enough that it lingered on our hands after holding the chopsticks. I thought I could deal with it and tried to eat a few bites of my seaweed salad, but the smell completely overwhelmed the smell/flavor of my food. I told our server what was happening and she at first tried to convince us that bamboo always smells that way. I asserted that no, bamboo does not usually smell of burned wood. In her defense, I think she genuinely couldn't smell the offensive odor because she seemed puzzled and not at all dishonest. She flagged down the other three servers on the floor and had them individually smell the chopsticks. Each of them made an "I just smelled something unexpected and weird" face and so we felt vindicated. Fortunately the restaurant had an unopened bag of chopsticks that had come in on a different shipment. They exchanged our tainted chopsticks with fresh, bamboo scented chopsticks and it was no big deal. But then one of the rolls I ordered never showed up. At first I thought it was taking a little longer because it was a specialty item, so I waited a solid 20 minutes before flagging someone down to ask about it. It turned out that the server who took our order was on her second day of training and she had missed the item when she transcribed our order from the laminated sushi sheet onto the order that goes to the chef. Ok, not a big deal, I understand that mistakes happen. I waited for another ten minutes and the maki roll finally arrived. It was tasty, but probably not worth the 30 minute wait. At the end of the meal when we received the check I was quite surprised to find that they charged us for the roll that was delayed in showing up. Even without the smelly chopstick incident, as a business owner I would never consider charging a patron for a food item that showed up 30 minutes late due to a staff error. I will still go back to Shanghai Tokyo because I can't imagine this perfect storm of weirdness could ever possibly strike twice in one place. But if I had another logistically convenient option for Chinese/Japanese dine in/delivery nearby I would chose to go somewhere else out of principle. read more

We've eaten here a number of times, and it's always been good. Take out on Friday, however, was another matter. If the 6 things we ordered, nothing was good. Very disappointed in both the food and the service. I ordered a Kung Pao chicken dish for lunch and the chicken was not cooked properly. Some pieces were almost raw. The waitress reluctantly took it back and it took over 10 minutes to get it back even though the restaurant was almost empty. No apology and no one checked to see if it was cooked any better. Although I ordered the dish spicy, there was no spiciness at all. I asked for some hot oil which I received over 5 minutes later after I had to ask for the hot oil to another employee. This is a small placer and, again, the place was almost empty. The combination of improperly cooked food, the lack of an apology and the poor service has put Shanghai Tokyo on the "Do not Return" list. read more

For a small strip mall restaurant, I was amazed at the variety on their menu. I have yet to be disappointed by the quality and the freshness of their sushi. It rates as one of my kids' top spot to eat at. Their sauces on the chinese dishes are always a delight. The sushi is pretty decent here, and the unagi-don is surprisingly yummy for cheap takeout unagi (though it clearly isn't high quality eel) though the general Japanese menu can seem a little pricey and I never really liked the teriyaki. read more

I started going to Shanghai Tokyo when I first moved to Natick partially because it is centrally located. I've been a loyal customer for about 6 years now and I can honestly say that it has consistently great food. I usually do take-out and they have NEVER messed up my order. EVER. They are a little pricier than the typical take-out Chinese place, especially considering that you have pay separately for rice. However, the food is always fresh and far above the average Chinese places in the area. I have liked everything I've tried and being a vegetarian am partial to the vegetable dumplings and fried tofu with broccoli. As much as I love this place, I'll be the first to admit that while the service is speedy and accurate, it is not as friendly as I would like. Please don't misundersand me, they aren't rude by any means, just curt. All in all, a very good restaurant with great food, clean and neat decor, and more than fair pricing considering the freshness of the food. read more

I've ordered out Chinese take out from here several times, and it was always sufficient, but nothing memorable. However, tonight I was craving SUSHI and the ready sushi at Whole Foods looked gross & expensive... so I chanced a call to them on my way home. Took a while to get through by phone on a busy Friday night (good sign) but once I did, my sushi order only took 15-20 minutes - very reasonable for a busy Friday night pickup. I have to say - the sushi was EXCELLENT. I am very picky about my sushi and asian fare, and I'd hazard to say the sushi here is much better than the Chinese menu. I had a selection including: maki, sashimi and sushi and it is all excellent quality - tastefully presented even in a takeout container and delicious. A bonus was the generous glob of wasabi and sliced pickled ginger - usually takeout places skimp on these condiments but Shanghai Tokyo did not. I will certainly be hitting them up for sushi again soon! read more
