Overall, a positive first experience. Service was excellent. We got a friendly greeting as soon as we walked in and were seated immediately. Even though we were a party of two, they gave us a table for four, and I always appreciate the extra space and distance from other patrons. Our waitress was very attentive and the food was served quickly. Granted it was a Wednesday night and they weren't very busy. The ambiance is modern and nice enough. The restaurant has a variety of tables and half-booth type seating as well as a bar. They have a full bar but limited beer selection. Just the usual Japanese brands, such as Sapporo, plus Sam Adams. The food was good but not amazing. The pork gyoza and chicken wings were very tasty as appetizers. The tempura udon has great tempura but the udon was just so-so. We ordered a sushi/sashimi combo plate and some of the fish, such as the salmon, was very fresh and delicious. Some of the other fish tasted a little dry and like it had been frozen for a while. I find this is pretty typical of suburban sushi restaurants, which don't sell enough of the less popular varieties to keep it super fresh. I will be back for sure, especially given the good service. The sushi always come in at the right temperature, which is big for me. But I had to take down 1 star because their hot food really stinks. I've bought dumplings and fried rice before. The dumplings were cooked really well but the filling was awful. And the vegetable fried rice was AWFUL. I couldn't taste any garlic. Not we're there any onions or eggs. So, three years later I'm writing a much-needed update to my original review. I say "much-needed", because indeed my opinion of Gari has changed completely. Indeed, the main sticking point about my original review - the delivery and customer service, has been overhauled. After eating there in 2013 at the request of a few friends, the food was actually pretty good. So, I started ordering again, this time through Grubhub (in order to have insurance for my payment, in the event a repeat scenario happened). Thankfully, my food arrived on-time (earlier than I expected, even, but my expectations weren't exactly too high either). For delivery sushi, it was surprisingly fresh, and the portions well-sized. This review update won't cover any specific dish or drink, because since that one better experience, I've ordered from Gari innumerable times - from their hot food to their cold food. While slightly pricier than other options in the area that I could order from, it was well-worth it. I've also since got to meet, work with (on town project), and know the owner of the restaurant, and on occasion she writes a note on my order sheet sending me her greetings, and personally greeting me when she sees me in the restaurant. Overall, I think Gari has gotten a lot better since my last experience, and I can comfortably say that it's one of the staples for sushi in the area, along with Oga's on Route 9. The interior decor is dim but not dark, in the typical modern Japanese look you would expect, with a rather impressive bar and cocktail selection. I've only tried a handful of their cocktails, but the few I had were amazing and refreshing. I strongly recommend anyone who loves good, fresh sushi to come here. I will have to advise against ordering their rolls, but if you're actually here to eat proper sushi and sashimi, why are you ordering rolls? read more

This includes rolls that may go up to $7 normally at the restaurant. The quality of fish and maki rolls is standard and great value for the Sunday price. I also ordered the kimchi vegetable fried rice and it's essentially Chinese American fried rice (soy sauce and random veggies) with kimchi added in. When I finally received the order, I was informed they would not be able to accommodate my request next time for no sesame seeds or soy sauce (I have a life threatening allergy), and they acted if it was my fault for having allergies. If there are any customers out there with allergies or special requests, please do your self a favor and find some other location that will respect you much better. One of these days, I'm going to go on a crusade against overpriced sub-par Japanese restaurants. It's really getting out of hand. First things first: Gari is your standard overpriced Japanese nonsense. Add a twist of thoroughly ridiculous rolls and somehow underwhelming sashimi, garnish with bland ramen, and you've got yourself another money-making Japanese restaurant. The slightly grimy plates and the bitter tea does it no favors. Truth be told, Gari is the first Japanese restaurant at which I've been disappointed in the tea. Surely you can do better? Instead, they go for the typical "innovative" sushi variety that is actually quite banal: "let's throw some mayo and mango and avocado together with either salmon or tuna. And if you ask for your change back, they will just pretend like you're not actually there and just carry on business as usual. I've driven by here a hundred times and finally had the opportunity to stop in for lunch. Now bear in mind I have been to Japan quite a few times and eaten authentic Japanese sushi. We ordered the mixed sushi/sashimi for two. When it arrived the fish, although not room temperature, certainly was not cold. As for the sushi presentation I have to scratch my head. It was certainly plentiful and a bountiful display, but on each 1" piece of rice they laid a 6" strip of fish. I've never seen anything like that before. Having talked to the owner and his wife and knowing how much time and effort goes into each meal and how careful they are selecting each fish I just appreciate the meals that much more.
