This food truck was such a pleasant surprise! Shannon's has earned a spot on my short list of the best lobster rolls in Maine, alongside Red's and McLoon's. The service was warm and friendly, with the staff making a point to greet every customer. The lobster roll may not be quite as enormous as Red's, but it was absolutely delicious--cold, sweet, succulent lobster piled onto a perfectly toasted bun and served with a side of garlic butter. Instead of the usual coleslaw, you can opt for a refreshing seaweed salad, and the generous serving of fries is another nice touch. We have been here twice, once as part of a Yelp Elite event. We enjoyed it the first time, we wanted to take our family here for our second visit. You have to watch carefully or map to the location, as the passing road is fast and you can drive by it without even realizing it. It's a small building with a decent sized parking lot - maybe can fit 10 or so cars. There is a picnic area to the side of the trailer, that has several picnic tables and a couple of little ones/lower to the ground. Very cute. Some tables with umbrellas for cover from the sun and in our case that day...brief relief from the rain, until it became sideways torrential rain. Plenty of garbage and recycling containers that are easy to locate and helps keep the place neat and free from debris flying around. It's not an extensive menu, however, the items we have ordered are fresh and flavorful. Item that stood out to us, the blueberry coleslaw. It's very very refreshing. They take electronic/card payments - it looks like it's a cash only type of place, but it's not. We had ordered our food for "here" and then the rain came. We sat at the tables as long as we could until the rain was coming down in sheets. We were soaked, so we ran to our cars...the staff saw what was happening, changed our order as "to go" and the gentleman ran the bagged orders to our cars with napkins and every thing we needed to enjoy our food. Great service! My fish basked was delicious. Love the fries that come with it as well. Plenty of fish, so much so, I had to give some to my husband to finish off. I love the finishing touches...may not seem like much to some, however, they take the time to put a tiny flower on each dinner. My niece and nephew loved it!! The bathrooms are in a separate building and are really nice. I thought they might be a potty, but they are fully plumbed, running water and electricity. Food: I got a fish basket with onion rings and clam chowder. The fish and onion rings were both served hot and crispy after being cooked to perfection. The basket came with a side seaweed salad that was a refreshingly pleasant change of pace from most fish n chips places. The clam chowder was thick and rich. It was jam packed with meat and potatoes. Definitely come with an empty stomach because they have great portion sizes and the food is fantastic. Service: The service here is great! Everyone is friendly and happy to answer questions. Brought my friend from New Zealand here to enjoy her first ever Maine lobster roll. After every single bite that she took, she said, "Yum". She understood why I told her she could not leave without having a lobster roll, first. The customer service here is superb. They really want you to enjoy your meal. That is hard to find in bigger places. They use one 1-1.5 found lobster for each roll. Pure lobster. No filler. The bun was grilled to perfection. The fries were cooked very well. The blueberry coleslaw was amazing. It was early enough in the season to not have much traffic. It was nice not to deal with Wiscasset. This is my second time visiting. Was excited to try this place. Went to the location outside of "downtown" Boothbay Harbor. Got the lobster roll (they say meat of 1.5 lb lobster) not sure if I believed that but maybe it is. The garlic butter to drizzle on top was sooo good. Market price memorial day weekend was $30 for the basket with fries and coleslaw. Asked about upgrading to onion rings they said small upcharge ($2 diff price on menu, so assumed that) it was $4 each. So should have each just gotten the fries included and ordered side of onion rings so not sure the $4 upcharge is worth it. Clams were good, not huge portion. I think the soups are popular there as well. The baskets come with an edible orchid which was a cute touch. You order from food truck (they take cards), outdoor picnic table seating and restrooms on site. There is also a location downtown Boothbay Harbor as well. Google maps still showed temporarily closed, I know we're early in the season so maybe check their Facebook page for the most recent updates. read more

Though Shannon's Unshelled is best known for its delicious lobster rolls, they also serve seafood and chicken baskets. We had the shrimp basket with fries and seaweed salad along with a clam basket with blueberry cole slaw and fries, with a side order of onions rings. The shrimp and clams were tasty and oil free - we appreciated that as sometimes (at other places) they are greasy and not very good. The blueberry cole slaw was a fresh alternative to the pretty flavorless version you get at many other places. The homemade onion rings were the highlight of the meal - it is hard to find handmade onion rings and especially ones with just the right amount of batter (sometimes they seem to be in armor plate). I wish the fries were just as good; they were ok built didn't match the excellent options on the ret of the menu. If homemade fries would be too hard to make, maybe they could buy thinner fries that cook and crisp up more quickly and reliably. It would also be good to have the option of a flavored salt read more

Now that was a lobster roll. We are not gonna talk about Price because it had two lobster tails on it. It was served naked which means there was no mayonnaise or anything else on the lobster served with butter on a lovely toasted roll with french fries and a unique and delicious blueberry coleslaw. The lobster was fantastic. I will say you eat outside at a picnic table which at this time of the year mid October is a little cool but not unbearable. I came hungry, and the portions filled me up and more. Clam chowder tasted fresh and savory~ did need more clam~ my clam basket was very filling and the fries very crunchy and delicious. Our group of four was here on vacation and found Shannon's Unshelled on Yelp. The positive reviews are spot on. We each ordered a lobster roll, mine with a gluten-free round bun. The rolls came with an ample amount of fresh, incredibly tasty lobster. Sweet, perfectly prepared....butter on the side if you like it that way. The roll comes with a side...blueberry coleslaw and seaweed salad for us...and fries. It's not cheap (market prices are posted), but for the amount of delicious food served, it's a great value. Triple Lobster rolls were flavorful offering one naked, one with garlic butter and moxie sauce and one with mayo. My four friends and I were starving after an exhaustive visit to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, where we searched (successfully) for trolls. Even with GPS, this tiny place was hard to find, but it was worth the struggle. On a road trip from Portland to Bar Harbor and had to stop in Boothbay! My husband and I heard rave reviews about this place and it was a must stop for us. Unfortunately it didn't live up to the hype for us. We typed the restaurant into our GPS which was incorrect. So you'll need to find the actual address on the website to type in if you don't know where you are. It was a cute little side of the road food truck and it wasn't super busy when we came. There were plenty of picnic tables with umbrellas, which was nice. We ordered the lobster roll trio with blueberry Cole slaw as we wanted to try all the sauces. The food came out rather quickly. The sauces came on the side so you can put as much or as little on the rolls as you'd like. Our favorite was the classic butter. We weren't huge fans of the moxie sauce and I thought the garlic sauce was better with the French fries. The rolls were good sized, but the lobster was a little difficult to eat. This may be a personal preference, but the lobster wasn't torn well and was hard to bite into for a sandwich. The fries were solid, but the coleslaw wasn't anything special. I was hoping for more blueberry flavor. Overall it wasn't our favorite lobster rolls in Maine for several reasons. It's a cute stop in Boothbay, but wasn't super impressed with the food. read more

We came to this roadside establishment on Friday at lunch. It was busy but not packed. We went up to the window and ordered lobster rolls and lobster sliders. We sat down at the outdoor picnic tables to wait for our order. This is not a place where the lobster rolls are made out of claw and knuckle meat, but there was tail meat as well. These were the best lobster rolls we've had thus far on this trip. The service was quick. The fries were good and it was an excellent meal. This is a food truck/stand on an open field with picnic tables and an indoor dining area. You order your food and they make it fresh, so there's a 10 minute wait. Still worth it not to get food that's been sitting under lamps. The lobster roll was $30 (Market Price) and including a sizable portion of crispy fries. I was trying to watch my calories, so I shared. But the chicken tenders and fried clam orders I saw brought out looked very yummy. What stands out is the professionalism of the staff. They greet everyone kindly and are very helpful. It's clear they appreciate your business. The portion of the lobster roll was on the small side (I realize lobster isn't cheap these days). So it's probably better to get it with a hot dog or another entree or side like onion rings, as long as you aren't watching your weight. There is also a good selection of drinks. Where both are good, the coleslaw is beyond amazing. I always feel like coleslaw is the one dish that you can tell if a restaurant is good or not. If the coleslaw is bad, chances are the other food is going to be bad as well. This still holds true with Shannon's. The coleslaw was way above expectations, as was the food. My husband said the Cole slaw was perfect and had a bit of a surprise. He is a snob when it comes to slaw and this was one of the best. What a great find, and we thought a hidden gem. This is a lobster roll "in the rough" setting. Think shack with picnic tables adjacent to a parking lot, nothing fancy, but we thought the food was great. Lobster rolls are pricey these days, but we felt the portion size was generous and contained quality meat (tails, knuckles and claws). Lately some places only fill the roll up with rubbery claw meat, and that is not the case here. I tried the bisque, which was very good and a very large portion. DO NOT miss the onion rings, hand made, they were crisp, delicious and piping hot. To top it all off, the lobster roll is adorned with a beautiful orchid, and while you may not want to eat that, it does make everything look and feel nicer! Our friends ordered a fried fish sandwich which was absolutely massive and easily enough for two people. After ordering, the food is delivered to the table, and we even had a chance to meet Shannon as she came over to check on everything. It's the first time I've seen staff visit tables to check on food quality in such a casual dining setting. They seem to genuinely care about the food they serve.
