A great spot for quick sandwiches! I've ordered both carry out and pick-up, both options were super easy and the food was delicious. I asked for minor modifications, and they were accommodated without issue. The market itself has basic staples of a convenience store. This was probably the best delivery order I've ever gotten. 5 stars alone for the steak and cheese sandwich. The bread was amazing, meat was tender, cheese was sharp and the addition of jalapeños and pepperoncini put it over the top. I went in with a great attitude and a slight bias because of the amazing things I've heard from locals about this pop & mom market/deli. I had been encouraged to go so many times and finally decided to pop by on a whim. Ambiance: It's in a great walkable area. Steps away from Lindell, bus stops the BJC and few other locally owned markets and restaurants. Right next to a plethora of condos and apartments. It's the dwellers of this units of close proximity that frequent this establishment. It is a small space that takes in a lot of natural light. It reminds me of a NYC/Chicago corner store or bodega. When I first entered there was no one at the deli, and I waited approximately 3-4 mins. I was then cheerfully greeted by a dark haired man that seemed to be orchestrating everything that I can only presume to be the manager/owner. He helped me cypher through the menu (they were out of the ingredients to make an Italian sub) and encourage I come back. Notes: They have an ATM. All the boar head meats, sauces and condiments are all GLUTEN-FREE. For anyone that is paleo-friendly, gluten-free I suggest getting the building your own salad. Order: I ordered the ultimate gyro for my partner, the turkey club for a friend and a build your own salad with bacon, spinach, tomato and onion. We enjoyed them all. This place is good but it's more than the food... if you're a born city sleeker this place gives you "feels". There's nothing like a great corner store deli. read more

Took my first bite after taking the photo. The white bread hoagie is fire. Nothing amazing but if you want a good sandwich every now and again this might be the spot. Vibe wise thought the inside would be more NYC bodega but it was lacking a random cat and all the grocery options to go with it. This could be the number one spot in this neighborhood but I had high expectations. They custom craft their sandwiches using QUALITY ingredients; locally sourced fresh baked breads, artisan Boars Head meats & cheeses!! This is the best sandwich in STL no matter what you choose! I always get the Turkey Club on wheat; Maple turkey, crispy bacon, Vermont cheddar! It comes topped with light mayo, perfectly chopped/crunchy romaine, & tomato slices...I add pickles & banana peppers & sometimes mustard. It is under $10 and could feed 2!!! They have a Cubano (more indulgent but a perfect symphony of sandwich goodness....) they will keep it warm in the panini press until you pick up ... they are so thoughtful & caring! I am shocked, shocked this place wasnt discovered until today. There is a sensible, market located in a safe area of the CWE. The small shop has a great deli in the back for freshly made sandwiches at lunch. Two brothers made our meals and were very friendly with suggestions and service. There looked to be a wonderful beer selection, not just the Inbev imports. They also make their own all assortment of BBQ right there in front of the store. I'll be back here for sure and hope to be a regular. They said the location has been open for 65 years! Dont think they'll go anywhere soon. Three sandwiches and a Coke ran me about $18. I might have been beaten to the first-review punch for this place, but that doesn't mean I can't chime in and echo Lyn's sentiments: This is definitely a great place, despite its appearance-- ideal to hit up for either lunch or simple groceries. I walk by quite often late morning/early afternoon, and somebody is always grilling burgers and hot dogs in front. I asked once, "So, what do you grill out here?" The resultant list was a lot more than I could fit in short-term memory, I'll tell you that much. Half smokes, polish sausage, turkey burgers-- the works! Shapiro's Market also has a decent selection of groceries and other household items stocked, too. I came in for 6 eggs the other day ($1.25) and was surprised at the variety of stuff off the shelves. Protip: cash only for purchases under $4.00! I'll definitely be back for Shapiro's market, for both a cold cut sandwich and groceries, when I'm too lazy to walk down the street to the Schnuck's. A nice little convenient shop and deli in Central West End. My wife dropped by for lunch since we were in the area and wanted something that was quick and inexpensive. I really didn't know what to expect. When I walked in, I was greeted by a cheerful clerk behind the register and a couple of aisles of the typical convenient store fair. The deli was located at the back of the store. There were about 10 different sandwiches that they made, all of which used Boar's Head products. The deli lady, who was also very nice, took our order. I had the reuben and my wife had some other sandwich, which escapes my mind at the moment. Both our sandwiches were pretty standard. I did like that it was a convenient store though, so I was able to choose from a variety of different side (chips) options. Seems like a cool neighborhood convenient store. I'm a fan of trying local things, so I knew I had to branch out when the food at WashU Med Campus was starting to get monotonous and the Subway across the street wasn't cutting it. Shapiro's is a small market on the corner of Newstead and West Pine. It's looks really shabby from the outside and maybe a little bit on the inside, but don't be too scared to walk in. The deli is located in the back of the market (it's really small so maybe 10 steps or so would do the trick). The really tall guy (who sometimes loiters around outside, but works in the deli, not the one in glasses) is really friendly. They meat the sandwiches generously, & the veggies are crunchy & fresh. The perfect lunch break! If you like honey baked ham, I'd go for the Orange Blossom. read more

Sandwiches here are great. Their bread is soft and chewy and they have some great meat, cheese, flavor combinations. I'm always happy after I've picked up a sandwich here and they are a good price too. My only wish was that they had a little bit more sandwich/topping combinations: some grilled vegetables, different sauces, more cheeses, option for wraps, etc. could be fun. I'm from the land of delis in New Jersey so i came with big expectations. So far Shapiro's Market is the closest to satisfying my taste buds. Plus, they often are grilling meats, too. St. Louis needs more corner deli/markets/convenience stores like this. read more

If you live in the area and haven't been over to Shapiros yet, you are missing out. It is your typical local market but has a couple of great additions: 1. The sandwiches at the deli are amazing and if you are not in the mood for a sandwich, they have daily specials that usually include some type of BBQ. Best part of it all, it is cheap! 2. They have a surprisingly good beer selection for such a small place. All of the regualr domestics come in 16 ounce cans (who wouldn't want that!) and there is also a selection of craft beer in a seperate cooler. 3. Great subs! We've ordered delivery from them a few times over the past couple of months after a friend recommended. Every delivery order has been perfect . They deliver subs, deli meats and cheeses so you can skip a covid trip to the store! The Maherachi (with gyro meat!), FiFi, spicy hoagie are our favorites so far. Best sub place so far in St. Louis. This is a perfect deli--fresh meat (they have Boar's Head so the quality is excellent) and a wide variety of cheese. All of the sandwich options are excellent and you also have the option to build your own. My personal favorite is the Blackened Turkey which is spicy! Perfect when accompanied with a cold drink and a bag of drinks. Shapiro's Market also serves as a small grocery store, just to name a few of the things you can get: beer, fruit, cookie dough, canned goods, hummus...random but my office has loved the occasional cookies that have resulted! They also offer some frozen foods like burritos, Amy's meals, pizzas. Located close to the Basilica, it's an easy walk from workplace. The owner is friendly and welcomes input on new menu items & grocery items. Also when the weather is warm he likes to fire up the grill & make some pork steak that is absolutely to die for! Shapiros is a great little market in the CWE. The staff is always super friendly and the meats offered are always top notch. While they may not have as many options as larger markets they have a great selection of snacks, chips, meats, and craft beers - pretty much everything you'd need for a day at the park. Which, coincidentally, Shapiros is very close to Forest Park. They also have an awesome sandwich shop that uses Boar's Head meats and cheeses. The "ultimate gyros" they have are probably my favorite. Loaded high with meat (from a skillet rather than spit) and anything else you'd want, including sriracha. read more
