I wanted a lite sandwich and didn't want brisket or a deli type. Then it dawned on me, I'd get a container of Straub's Chicken Salad and a Package of Kings Hawaiian Slider Rolls. This way my guest can make small sandwiches and I'd be introducing them to the best chicken salad in the metro area. The ladies at the deli counter are always friendly and helpful. This was a great find for me. I'm new here from Los Angeles and had my favorite small upscale markets. I've been going mostly to Whole Foods, which is great (Town + Country far better than Chesterfield BTW) but wandered into Straubs last week and have been back 4 times. Every time I say to myself, OK you've spent enough here, you have enough food at home, take a break... and then I go back. Got a particular kind of apricots which are great, delicious slices of cannoli and German chocolate cake, egg salad... trying to run the gamut. Staff is extremely nice. There is a bustling energy that I really like, the story is busy but not too crowded. PS This location was better than the one in Town + Country where it was so big it didn't feel personal and there was limited staff to help me find things. read more

I'm going to sound like an old person but I feel like the quality of the prepared products Straubs carries has gone down. At one time their chicken noodle soup in mason jars was the best of the best. I recently rediscovered it due to being ill and while the stock is still delicious, the chicken could not be any dryer along with the skinny hard starchy noodles that used to be soft and wide. 2 different plastic containers 2 weeks apart. My business is just two blocks away. So disappointing. read more

Straub's was always my "go to" place for the best roast beef in town. They cook their own top round roast and it was one of the best places to get rare roast beef. Several months ago their policy must have changed. Instead of taking the whole roast and slicing it in half, so that the customer could get either rare roast beef or well done roast beef; they now start slicing the beef at one end and if you want rare roast beef, you are out of luck. I went in today and they must have just started the roast, the lady slicing, told me that she could cut a couple slices and it would be rare. I let her make a fool out of her self, the slice was still well done and had a big run of fat/grizzle through the middle of the beef. I don't pay $20 a pound for something like that. I am not sure that she even understood the problem. I went up front, on my way out, and asked to speak to the manager, the lady at the checkout told me that she was a manager. I explained the situation and the only response was that she was not in charge of the deli section. With that I left. I WILL NOT BE BACK. They need deli people who understand what they are doing or management is telling them to do it that way so that they don't throw away the well done piece at the ends of the roast. Either way it is a bit of luck if you can get rare roast beef at Straub's. read more

Absolutely fantastic grocery store. Highest quality of meats in the area. They use Real, Prime, Top End Ingredients in their things in the Deli Case. The Butcher will knock your socks off with knowledge and wiliness to help and make your meal extra special. Lean Proteins are ready to grab and take home to prepare. Straub's Chicken Salad is truly Epic. Even if you are not a Chicken Salad person, try it once, there is nothing better even in restaurants. The Prime Roast Beef sliced thin is amazing. They have excellent Prosciutto that is a family favorite as an appetizer at a Holiday Party. Too many things here are the best of the best to name. See for yourself, this is a fun place to find new grocery products. The prices are high because the quality is high. It is worth it from time to time to indulge in the Best. Short walk from my hotel. I bought a 2 pack of store made hamburger buns and some of their famous chicken salad to make a sandwich, and a delicious roasted chicken breast from the hot bar. It is a very compact store with everything you need - including wine! One of the most expensive grocery stores I've been to in my travels but their famous chicken salad is famous for a reason! My husband has been telling me about Straubs for a while now so today we finally stopped in and I loved it. He used to work right across the street so he's eaten here 1000 times and highly recommended the chicken salad, deli, and grab and go sandwiches. We wandered around to look at the bakery items that looked wonderful and all the neat brands of snacks and foods they carry inside here as well as the frozen Imo's pizza. This is a small, local upscale grocery store with quality items and a nice upstairs seating/eating area up some white metal spiral stairs. The vibe in here is totally my style. read more

Went here specifically to find fresh lab chops and fresh salmon for a birthday surprise birthday I'm cooking tonight. The butcher staff was amazing. He gave me exactly what I wanted and cut the French chops perfectly. I can't wait to cook them. The seafood counter was even better. They have three different choices of salmon to choose from. I explained what I need to the gentleman helping me and he was happy to help me. He offered to go ahead and remove the skin for me which I was grateful for bcus it's one thing I'd have to do later. Just as he was about to wrap it he offered to go ahead and cut it into cubes for me as well as I already told him I needed 10 cubes for my dish. My experience here was amazing. The only con was that some of the produce was realllllllly needing to be pulled and some of it was outrageously priced that I had to go elsewhere to finish shopping. read more

I've gone to Straub's quite a bit more since covid. Since going more often I've noticed a few things they have that are really worth the extra price. The meat counter/butcher at this location is staffed by the kindest people. I often get two chicken breasts for my partner and I. They hand trim them and they are quality. I've cooked a lot of chicken in my life and you can really taste the difference here. They also have really good pre-marinated options. Straubs also has a great deli with solid daily lunch options. We get there baked and glazed ham sliced for killer ham sandwiches. My partner is crazy about their fries and I've enjoyed the Tuesday nachos. Not so healthy but there are cheat days... or years... talking to you 2020. Overall this is a great local grocer. They have high end products, local products, and the basics for when you're in a pinch. read more

I looked on line before I visited this grocery store thinking it would be as spectacular as the photos show. When I walked in, the store was so cramped, and extremely cluttered I barely had room to navigate. The food selection is extremely limited and grossly over priced to where you become "that shopper who nit picks". As you go in further you can see the dirty floors, warehouse/factory style windows, and misleading turns that make it appear bigger that it actually is. The one and only reason why I gave this place 2 stars (not the $269.50 total for a tiny bit of groceries) but the deli staff ladies.... the only nice people in the entire store!!! They genuinely love their jobs and take pride in what they do. The cashier walked away to assist some regular customer halfway through ringing me up with zero apology. read more

We were staying at the hotel right across the street from here so we decided to stop in and see what we could find for dinner. They have a huge selection of already prepared meals that are very convenient if you are staying at a hotel or don't like to cook. We tried some of the "famous" chicken salad which was OK, but the salad that we got from here was AMAZING! Amy was working and she stopped everything just to make me a salad....and we are now basically best friends! This was the best salad I've ever had! My kids were also able to find a quesadilla, chicken fingers, and some taquitos to eat that they enjoyed as well. Was a perfect stop for dinner for our family! read more

Some things are reasonably up charged others not so much. They sell Breadsmith's Dolce Cello (corn puffs) for $18, it's $8 at Breadsmith. Who would pay that for a small bag of popcorn?... ME!!! on accident since they didn't put a price tag and I left the store before looking at the receipt thinking it was $8. Store didn't accept a return either. All for paying more for local but not 50% more. Taking my money to Dierbergs and Schnucks. read more

Great service and great products but their prices are far from great. Though most Straub's products are overpriced, the best example of Straub's pricing strategy surrounds their liquor pricing. Straub's will bring in highly sought after liquor bottles and mark them up 8-10x MSRP, just because they can. In my opinion, neighborhood grocery stores should not be gouging their daily customers like that. Schnucks, in comparison, sells the same bottles for one tenth of the price. read more

i was thinking about having a London Broil for dinner Sunday and thought today were will I begin the odyssey to find a top round steak in the wonderful selection (sarcasm) of St. Louis grocery stores. Wegman's you always made grocery shopping so simple. So i started at Straub's in Clayton. Joe the butcher was already trimming some other cuts this am when i arrived and said. I would like to have a London Broil, do you have a top round steak? Joe then said, "sure i will cut one for you now!" He disappears to the back arrives with a primal cut and in a few minutes he cuts out and trims the beef. Simply, wow, 1 stop, 1 polite and competent butcher and on my way. Wish as the locations where as good as the Clayton and Town&Country locations. read more

This was my first time at this location and it is definitely not my favorite straubs location. It looks very nice on the outside and it's clean on the inside but it does have that old building smell. The restroom is very scary and has no AC at all unless it was broken. It was just hot and gross in there. I feel like everything is crammed together, like if you were an oversized person you would feel squished. There was a lot of stuff here that I wanted to try but they were all expired or near expiring. I think the staff needs to do a better job doing inventory. With that being said, I was a little hesitant on purchasing my usual but it was the deli section hoping that the stuff isn't old. I ordered my chicken salad and the lady had brought out a new batch so that was good for me (at least she said it was new) lol. But it tasted fine! I wanted to get other stuff but felt like it's been siting on the shelf for a long time. I took the risk and bought a pint of Jeni's ice cream. Weird thing is that there was no sell by or best by date on the pint. We wanted it so we took that risk hoping it taste good. I think their pints are a little pricy compared to other stores and their actual storefront. I'm not in a hurry to come back since the one on kingshighway is closer. read more

Pros: this place sells some unusual/unique ingredients. Bonus points for the Japanese melon-flavored soda we found - my daughter loves it! I also am pretty addicted to their vegetarian sushi and get it at least once per week. Cons: their prices are too high, the parking lot is a traffic accident waiting to happen as people try to turn in from Maryland Ave., their setup is extremely small and crowded, and it may make you feel a little face-punchy on an extra crowded day. They only have 3-4 cashiers. My main pet peeve is the fruit. They chop fruit and it just sits there for over a week. Chopped fruit does not stay good that long. I got a thing of mixed berries and it was super questionable. If anyone at Straub's reads this, please rotate your chopped fruit more frequently. I also like the Greek pasta salad at the deli, but have questioned its freshness. Despite the cons, I still award four stars for convenient location and the fact that they do sell some interesting items. read more

Straub's is the only place in town I can find Nairn's Oat Cakes without sugar. And they've got a great assortment of anything you can imagine. Crackers, rice, chocolates...they also sell great pasta sauces and salad dressings. I like their deli area. The chicken noodle soup is the best I've had in town, hands down. And their turkey breast is also divine. It's a great little neighborhood shop. Not cheap, but worth the splurge. read more

I was just at Straubs and noticed that their Rombauer Chardonnay and noticed its $38.99 vs $28.99 at the Wine Merchant a couple of blocks away. Now I understand it will always be more but I politely wanted her to know it's a little excessive. I talked to the Straub's Wine Manager and she said 'ok well that's the price'. Now, I was just pointing out as a routine customer that it's an excessive premium and she essentially said too bad that's the price and I don't care what you Mrs. Customer thinks. I had been wanting certain items that Straub's carry. I stood in line. I always take notice of cleanliness. When it was my turn to be checked out, the cashier grabbed his mask, pulled it under his nose, touching his nose . I wondered why this behavior now, seeing he never touched nor pulled his mask down before me. In all, the man touched the top part of the mask where his nose is and pulled the mask down four separate times. I wanted to scream!!! I didn't take the receipt as I walked out. When I got to my car, I disinfected my hands after throwing the items I bought on the floor. I immediately sprayed the bags. I called the store manager and told him what happened. This is what he told me: 1. We have a relaxed mask policy. 2. Oh the cashier didn't mean anything by what he was doing, (intentionally passing germs, diseases, viruses, bacteria). 3. The store manager didn't make me feel safe shopping at the store, wasn't concerned about health code violations, CDC standards, etc. 4. I didn't feel respected or valued as a customer. I love Straub's. I work within a 5 minute drive of the Straub's in Clayton and I always end up there for lunch. I don't actually eat there, but I end up taking something yummy out and enjoying a nice, healthy lunch at my office. I think that Straub's has a GREAT selection of fresh produce- a little pricey, but definitely worth it. Everything they carry is fresh, and always tasting and looking ripe. Straub's also has an incredible selection of "healthy" chips, breads, donuts and delicious cakes/brownies. I usually end up spending more then I told myself I would when I walk in there. The meat selection is great and the chicken salad at Straub's is infamous for being superb. Indeed, it is great. I usually go for the prepared sushi at Straub's when I want something fast, lite, and on the go. It's great. They have great options and always something to satisfy my taste buds. Straub's. I really like Straub's - by far the nicest grocery we have in St. Louis. Like Danielle, I used to work down the street from the Clayton location and liked stopping by here for lunch - their deli counter can make custom salads or wraps for you on-the-spot. I especially like their chicken Caesar salad wrap with giant croutons and walnuts in the mix. It's also nice to be able to drop by on the way home to pick up a specialty item, like flowers or a bottle of wine. And as Allan already mentioned, the meat here is top notch. I just don't understand how anyone could afford to do their regular grocery shopping at Straub's! It's probably just as expensive as Whole Foods... I stopped by here Tuesday afternoon to pick up fried chicken (FYI - Strabu's has by far the best fried chicken in St. Louis) for Office Hours and ended up spending close to $100! On chicken, paper plates, wine and some other misc. items. Wow! The fried chicken was totally worth it, but that's not how I normally roll on a Tuesday evening! So if you do have the chance to splurge a little on your take home grocery items, definitely give Straub's a chance. Wow. It's kind of amazing how Yelp's obviously transparent attempt at getting a monstrous amount of free data has made me reflect on my knowledge of the area from just under 6 years ago. So we have a whole foods now to add to the mix for getting some cut of meat. The problem is you're still going to have trouble getting some stuff like veal shanks on the fly. You're best off calling a couple days in advance to either Straub's or Whole Foods. Anyway. It's still a crap shoot as to whether you're going to find exactly what you're looking for at either. Especially if you're looking for something like duck. For duck you're best off working with a whole bird. ANYWAY. This Straub's hasn't changed one bit. However, now there's this place called Whole Foods that's in town that offers a whole gamut of stuff that this place doesn't. Regardless, you can't help but respect what Straub's has been doing at a local level and their prepared foods in the deli section are, in my opinion, much better than Whole Foods. read more

All the reviews are true, Straub's is certainly fine! Stopped in today since the Clayton location is within walking distance of my office. The parking lot was jam packed, but that didn't stop me. I grabbed a spot next to the Lexus suv that was taking up half of the spot I parked in. You know who you are if you read this! :) Entered the store and headed for the soups, ahhhh yes! There it was Mulligatawny, piping hot and fresh. I picked out my soup cup ladled a few spoon fulls in and popped the lid on. I could not wait to dig in. I decided to grab a turkey sandwich, this is where I was grinning ear to ear. Boar's Head is my all time fave and Straub's offers more selections than I've seen anywhere. I went for the standard oven golden boar's head. Juicy and rather tasty! Piled high on sourdough with baby swiss for $5.99 it was totally worth it! Considering my meat and cheese had just been sliced fresh upon ordering. Let me just tell you the soup was out of this world. It was a bright yellow color like turmeric, loaded with all white meat chicken, golden raisins and slivered almonds.
