Our family has been enrolled with Sharp Health Plan for many years. A couple years ago, I was diagnosed with a rare and complex medical condition. Since then, multiple referral requests and claims related to my condition have been denied or declined, including requests for out-of-network care when in-network providers were unable or unwilling to help manage my condition. Over the past 3 years, I have paid THOUSANDS of dollars out of pocket to obtain care elsewhere. Many of the in-network providers I was referred to left me feeling dismissed, ignored, neglected, and bulldozed. I also disputed the accuracy of some medical records and submitted requests for amendment. Those records were not amended, and my amendment requests were never addressed. Based on my personal experience as a patient with a complex medical condition, I would not recommend Sharp Health Plan to others. read more

Karla in customer service is great. I have had issues with other reps in the past but she went above and beyond, she was super kind and even made me laugh. I would give 5 stars to Karla alone but since this review is for the health plan in general.. I can only give 4 because of the confusing help (with bills and amounts owed) I've had in the past. The plan itself and the providers are very good if you live in the San Diego area. The best health plan in San Diego? Give me a break!! Not for Seniors. I have my Medicare Advantage plan with Sharp. I have never used it until recently, I tried to make an appointment with an Ophthalmologist to take care of a cataract that is growing in my right eye. Not only the person who answer the phone to make the appointment was extremely rude but there is NO appointments until March of 2027. I asked what what you suggest? she just hang up on me. I call customer care and they just gave me bunch of inaccurate information that it did not land an appointment at all. this is the way they have to us Senior Citizens, I will call Medicare and report this behavior , We Seniors pay over $200 for Medicare every month, for nothing. I need help. Have medicare sharp hmo. They have contracted with "& more" for over the counter items. (160.00 per quarter) I have had FOUR problems with items scanned on "& more" app stating covered. When I go to pay, the "& more" card will not work. This is a new company sharp has contracted with. Last year, no problem with that company. I am sooooo frustrated. Have called sharp and "& more". Got the run around. Grievance submitted. Submitted receipt to be reimbursed. NO RESPONSE. NO RESPONSE. After the grievance was submitted it has happened twice!!!!!! Was told, this is a common problem and happens to many people. It is difficult to be in line, not be able to pay with the card, get it rerung to try again. Booked appointment via portal to see primary care doctor for the first time. The bit_ch, DR Emelya Ahadian, MD, actually said to me "I'm not taking new patients. How did you get in here? Total waste of time with the rudest Dr. I have ever encountered in my life. Then I went to Caroline Dustin, in order to continue HRT therapy, prescribed from my original DR. of 15 years. She wrote the 1st prescription. The medication was too strong. I requested a lower dose. It took her a week to send in a new prescription and when she did she failed to take the time to look and see that the new prescription was out of stock, and she cancelled out my original prescription. Now I have no prescription. After calling Sharp, filing grievances, and explaining this for over 5 hours to 5 different people, including CVS pharmacy, I still DO NOT HAVE A PRESCRIPTION! These are the worst Dr's I have ever encountered in years. Can't wait to get rid of Sharp. Giant waste of money. read more

Because of a mistake made by Covered California, I was billed $187 for health insurance by Sharp that I never used and immediately cancelled. I spent (not exaggerating) ~5 hours total across multiple phone calls trying to get this resolved, and was assured multiple times that I would not have to pay this charge, yet kept receiving calls from their clueless billing department, requesting the payment. Eventually I just ended up paying it to be able to keep my insurance from being suspended, as I was dealing with health issues and had a doctor's appointment the next day. If you care about your health, never get this Sharp Health Plan. Get a health insurance plan that is a PPO elsewhere. The reason is that to see your primary care physician can take 4+ months. The wait in the Sharp ER is 6+ hours to get care. If there is a national emergency and people need to be treated immediately and Sharp is the only place you can go to, then you will surely die and die of waiting. In terms of wait, it is comparable to the healthcare in a third world country where you wait all day to receive care in the ER and months to see a PCP and specialist. Also, there is so much red tape. You are referred to the Virtual Doctor, then the Virtual Doctor refers you to Urgent Care, then Urgent Care refers you to ER even for a sinus infection. This is because the Sharp Rees-Stealy does not have all the equipment for urgent care. If there is a Black Box Warning in the prescription drug prescribed by the Sharp doctor which alerts the patients to serious, life-threatening, or permanently disabling risks and prompts a critical conversation between you and your doctor to weigh the medication's benefits against its potential risks, taking your personal medical history into account, Sharp does not care. They will not find an alternative drug with no serious, life-threatening, or permanently disabling risks and tell you to take the drug and if you experience the major adverse side effect, then just go to the ER again which is cha-ching for them. It is better to get a PPO so that you can go to other doctors outside of Sharp when Sharp has failed you. There is also rampant falsification of heath documents after each visit even if you are being recorded. The main ones are that they do not document in the medical record what medications were given during the doctor visit such as ER visit, the doctor neglects to document new findings during the office visit such as a hardened mass even though it was discussed during the visit, and/or the doctor will state that the patient denied this and that in the health record when the patient did not deny it. Out of the 4 doctor visits, 3 out of 4 visits have health documents that do not totally reflect the doctor visit. When you try to have them correct the health record, sometimes they do not correct it. When you see discrepancies between your doctor visit and the heath record document for that visit, call them out on it. Also, you go to the doctor to get treatment. Three out of the 4 Sharp visits did not offer treatment. Why would I waste money for that? Also, Sharp does labs and tests but does not follow-up with any treatment. Labs and tests are not the treatment. When you read the health record, the doctor no longer offer any treatment. What is the point of going to the Sharp doctor? In the past, the doctor would write-up a long description of the treatment. Now, if the lab said normal, then there is ZERO treatment. Sharp should treat the person not the lab results. Do all infections show up in the lab right away? My parent who was also a Sharp patient, the infection did not show up in the lab so she was not given proper medication. When the infection worsened and finally showed in the lab, she was almost dying. Imagine suffering for 5 weeks or more because the doctor would not treat you and waiting for anything to show up in the lab. The traditional doctors of the past have more compassion that today's Sharp doctors. If the doctors describe themselves as evidence-based doctor, that means that doctor relies on labs and tests alone and treats the lab and test results not the patient even if the person is suffering. Stay away from evidence-based doctors. They have zero compassion and only treat the labs and tests results. If the labs and tests are normal, then the patient is offered zero treatment and endless suffering. Those evidence-based doctors will never work with the patient. read more

This is because they have several phone numbers to call, and one will transfer you to another, after you wait on the phone to annoying music. Overall it is time consuming. Their patient portal has changed during the last 5 years and their Over the Counter (OTC) card system is problematic. Sharp is an amazing HMO. They have very qualified, knowledgeable, and, for the most part, caring doctors. My family's PCP is Dr. Howard Wynne. We've been with him for years. He and his nurse are very caring and helpful. They listen, they care, they advise, they treat! We couldn't ask for more. The fantastic experiences over the many years doesn't just end with our PCP and his nurse. I've had foot surgery with my podiatrist, Dr. Haji. He and his staff are incredible. Well, I've been to Sharp hospital several times in the last year or two for surgeries and follow up. Most of my experiences with sharp have been very favorable. In fact that I am at the hospital now. I am a 75 year old disabled senior citizen...and I am diabetic. My hunger last night was quite intense...and each time I asked for food, they denied me and continued to deny me. I couldn't believe. Each staff person kept assuring me that food would be in a few minutes! Not so. Finally, I was over taken with hunger. At 7,:00.p.m I suppose she had to make some kind of story. Sharp HealthCare is one of the worst in San Diego. While they have a handful of competent doctors, their radiology and billing departments are abysmal. Not only has radiology misread results and caused unnecessary invasive procedures that led to long lasting complications, the billing department will then submit all of these procedures under the wrong code and leave you to pay for them out of pocket. I once fought an ultrasound bill for two years because Sharp continually submitted under the wrong name. Not to mention the fact that this ultrasound took place before an invasive procedure that was not only unnecessary, but unsuccessful. This all took place in the gynecology and obstetrics department. I have been messaging my PCP's team since Monday for a needed Rx refill. Simple. Every day I send a screenshot and every day there is no reply. My PCP is out until the end of next month. My old PCP has been out for months. I was on the phone for 40 minutes trying to speak with a supervisor. Nothing. Absolutely terrible customer service from Sharp Healthcare Billing. I called to pay my hospital bill -- not to argue, not to complain, just to pay. The first person I spoke to, a woman named Maria, hung up on me as soon as I gave her my information. No explanation, nothing. I called back, and the second rep, a male, immediately told me they couldn't verify my info without even letting me finish speaking. Every time I tried to ask a question, he talked over me and just kept repeating, "I can't help you." I'm trying to do the right thing and take care of a bill that's already overdue by three months, and this is how I get treated? It's frustrating and completely unprofessional. Billing Errors, Incompetent Customer Service, and Overall Lack of Accountability I am deeply disappointed with the customer service, lack of accountability, and borderline fraudulent behavior I've experienced from SHARP. After attempting to charge me for a full office visit for my yearly physical earlier this year, they are now claiming I have unpaid balances related to physical therapy visits this year, despite the fact that all payments were made through an HSA partner. For over a month, I have been in constant communication with SHARP via their app, explaining that the payments were already made. However, SHARP's customer service has shown no interest in contacting their billing partner to resolve this issue. I even took the initiative to contact the partner directly, who sent proof of my payments being cashed out by SHARP. Despite this, SHARP has flagged the payment as past due and is threatening to involve Collections. Most recently, I was told that they can't discuss my issue on the app, even though we have been doing so for a month. They told me to call them directly, but did not give me a phone number. This situation has caused me immense stress, continues to waste my time, and highlights what I originally suspected was an egregious lack of patient advocacy and basic customer care on SHARP's part. I say originally, because now I can only believe that this is all by design: to make money however possible. This is easier to believe than such a large, reputable organization failing so miserably to handle a simple issue that could have easily been resolved with a few minutes of attention from a competent employee. I am left with no choice but to share my negative experience on review sites, hoping it will bring attention to this issue. All I was asking for was for someone at SHARP to take responsibility, contact the billing partner, and remove these erroneous charges. I now believe that I may never see SHARP correct this error, but I will make it a point to dissuade as many people as I can from trusting this healthcare monopoly whose prime directive is clearly to steal money from people in need of care. read more

Dr. Erik Perkins at Sharp Rees-Stealy, Scripps Ranch, is an highly condescending, arrogant, and incompetent neurologist who probably hasn't studied current medical advancement publications since his original medical studies. He's the type of doctor that once they graduate med school (probably with a "C" average) they never expose themselves to new medical breakthroughs and are stuck in their little boxes. His training and knowledge-base can become obsolete, but he doesn't care because that's what he knows. The world can pass him by with remarkable breakthroughs and advancements in his field, but he's still sitting in his little box doing everything the way he's always done them. Never spending any extra time perfecting his experience-base so that he can be at the top of his game. Too many doctors nowadays are content being at the bottom of their game. And patients suffer for it. Based on my appointment with him yesterday, he's just one of those complacent, unmotivated doctors. I have done hundreds of hours of research on MS exposing myself to gov't sponsored/written articles and MDs around the globe specializing in MS, and when I brought up to him new theories that were being discussed in more holistic circles his attitude became condescending and insulting, as though he's the only one that knows anything about MS. Whether or not a doctor agrees with a theory, they should at least be aware of new discussions/theories that are being explored by countless other doctors worldwide, who are either equally qualified or more qualified than he is. And he is supposed to be an authority on MS according to the Google search I performed. His name popped up first for the San Diego area as one of the foremost experts on MS. That's a sad commentary for Sharp Medical Group, if he's considered one of the best on their staff. Dr. Erik Perkins also changed his tune twice with me during this conversation. First when I told him all my MS symptoms began after I got the flu shot in 2014, he said there's no way that it's related. And then within the same conversation, he admitted that the flu shot can trigger demyelination damage in some people. Well, am I a person? Then when I told him I wanted to look for parasites in my spinal tap, because there are some theories out there that say MS may be caused by parasites, he first said he couldn't do that with spinal taps. And when I insisted that, yes he can, based on my research, he spent five minutes on the computer and sure enough I was correct. He did not apologize for his condescending tone towards me. It was clear to me when he resisted taking notes of my long list of physical symptoms that he wasn't here to help me. I actually had to insist that he input my symptoms into the computer so that they would be on my record. When I went back to read his doctors notes, he only listed about 60% of the symptoms I mentioned. I'm not even sure what the last straw was, but I just told him to forget about it and I will go somewhere else to get medical help and a possible diagnosis. Even with two brain MRIs that showed excessive white lesions and cytology blood work that pointed in the direction of MS, and my over 30 different physical symptoms over the past 10 years, with most of them being present yesterday (including a tremor in my right arm and hand and tingling & numbness), he still seemed to skirt the idea that I might actually have MS or some other demyelination disorder. I couldn't help wonder if he got paid for NOT diagnosing people. I ended up walking away angry and made it clear to him that I felt he was incompetent and should not be practicing at all. During this appointment, I was suffering with a multitude of MS symptoms. I went to him to try to get help and all he did was make me feel worse. Why are doctors so darn arrogant? I used to have so much respect for doctors, but now because of doctors like him, I no longer trust them. Any doctor that thinks they know everything, well that's a big red flag that they really are at the bottom of their game, and they're hiding behind their arrogance hoping no one will ever challenge them. And when they are challenged, they respond with disrespect and condescension. That is not someone who is a healer, that's someone there to collect a paycheck. What about the oath of doing no harm? I felt harmed by Dr.Erik Perkins. Medicine should be a collaboration of many disciplines, not a one-size-fits-all "I got the market cornered" approach. Everyone needs to be treated respectfully as an individual with unique issues. Now I am forced to leave the Sharp system to pay out of pocket and pursue on my own through the National MS Society. Finally, I will get my long-awaited diagnosis for what's been ailing me for the past 10 years. If I find I actually do have MS or a demyelination disorder, Dr. Perkins and Sharp will be hearing back from me. read more

The procedure was deleted for approx. 1,5 hours. Finaly, I went to the procedure room at 15;29, procedure started at 15;47 and ended at 15;56. I was out of procedure room at 16;03. Because I am very healthy, active person 5'3", 122lbs my anesthesiologist grade me as ASA 1. After approx. one hour I went home. Sharp health price tag for this 9 min procedure is as price tag for a new car...$47,000.00!!! I would like to know what Sharp health price tag for a total join replacement is ....as a new airplane?!! SHP VIP plan is far from a VIP plan. They have contracted with the poorest plan that VIP has to offer. VIP has the worst reviews. they offer an allowance of $350 for frames every 2 years. My experience with Grossmont Vision is terrible. i have had to go back consistently because of faulty frames. They tighten one time and broke and replaced with the same type of frame. when I asked to replace the frame, I was told by Sarah new manager that there would be additional cost $192. This experience has been within the year of purchase. I have submitted a grievance to SHP and been denied and referred to Medicare who has nothing to do with contracting with VSP Vision plan. read more

I have been trying to resolve an issue with sharp for almost a year now. I have been charged over $300 for a visit that was covered by my insurance, I have the sharp health plan ID card that shows proof the effective date was 11/8/23. I made the appointment in good faith that I would be covered and it's unbelievable they are still trying to charge me. They are also not covering a session conducted with Mind Path Health, which they are trying to charge me $100 for a session I also had covered by insurance. Sharp used to be a halfway decent health organization. In recent years, it just gets worse and worse. The lack of available appointments is terrible. It shouldn't take 2-3 months to see a primary care physician. The new app is absolutely abysmal. If you try to get a cancellation, the app gives you a timeframe but the appointments are gone even before you open the app. If you want a specialist, it's at least six months or more. If you can't pay at your appointment because it was online or their machine isn't working, it harasses almost daily for the $10 copay even though they've already collected hundreds from the insurance. The Wexler office has no humans at any of the reception areas. Today, the app pinged me and said "time to check in". I freaked out and raced out of work thinking I had mixed up my dates, but no, the app has you check in and pay A WEEK AHEAD OF TIME! I sat in the unstaffed waiting area for an hour, before finding someone to ask. My doctor wasn't even in the office. The person I talked to said it happens often and she wasn't surprised. Clearly I'm not the only one who thinks sending a note telling someone to check in and pay a WEEK AHEAD of an appointment is a bad idea. read more

I love my Sharp doctors, but the VIP Medicare Advantage plan is horrendous. I have been doing battle with their drug provider CVS Caremark and CVS Specialty for an overcharge of $573. I just go in circles from one telephone representative to another. They promise return phone calls, follow ups and escalations to supervisors. Recently, Mariann O. assisted me in locating a Sharp Rees Stealy where I could get the service I needed. She was knowledgeable, friendly, and a pleasure to talk to. I wasn't on the phone very long, but Mariann O. left a wonderful impression and gave such good customer service that I decided to write a review. I don't think there is a perfect health plan out there, but I'm pretty happy with Sharp. The Drs never have available appointments. My dr suddenly moved out of state and there was no communication from Sharp. And when I called to get an appointment I was told there were no drs taking new patients at the practice and that the only drs in the city who are taking new patients have no openings until December. My interaction with Sylvia L. is the primary reason I'm providing this 5-star rating. She is a rockstar who helped me work out all the headaches associated with the SHARP billing department. I was overcharged and paid $3k over my out-of-pocket limit to SHARP. After discovering this, I contacted SHARP for a refund I knew I was owed. I've been told over the phone by SHARP representatives that I was due for a refund since November 2022. Various times I've called to check the status of my refund - and received contradicting replies from different SHARP representatives. Some saying it's in the process, and others saying that it hasn't even been initiated and there's no evidence that I'm owed a refund. Mistakes and complications happen, and I'm understanding of that. However, it was frustrating to spend months chasing this large refund I knew I was owed. I was finally lucky enough to get connected to Sylvia L., who went above and beyond to resolve this. She did an amazing job of understanding my situation while also being objective about it. Sylvia was motivated to get to the bottom of where my money went, and resolved this refund issue within a few hours. SHARP is very lucky to have her representing the company. read more

Massively impacted system. You aren't going to be able to see a doctor for 1-3 months or a specialist for 2-4 months. Then they're likely to rush you through the appointment because they have to see so many people a day. It took me several attempts to find a primary care doctor who focuses on helping me with my health issue rather than getting through the appointment as quickly as possible. Also since they started using the Follow My Heath app I rarely get a call after tests, or even a message in the app, with the results. I instead have to poke through the results myself and try to interpret them. On top of that the app is absolute garbage. It's very hard to make appointments using it, it takes forever to open, and it's poorly organized. read more
