I left Sharp for 2 years for another plan when my excellent Sharp doctor retired. Sharp doctors, as well as other medical personnel, are excellent. However, the current impersonal communication system is quite disappointing. I returned to Sharp last year to find a completely different system of patient-provider communication. No longer could I contact my doctor's office directly. When you phone the number on your doctor's business card, it goes to a central office of what appear to be telephone operators that seem to function as gate keepers to your doctor's office. The system appears to be a way to discourage patient - doctor contact. The "telephone operator " interrogates you to decide if you are allowed to be transferred to your doctor's office. They seem reluctant to allow you to even talk to your doctor's receptionist. It seems like it may be a cost cutting measure. You're asked to discuss the medical purpose/details of your call with what appears to be a telephone operator, who presumably does not have the medical expertise to address your medical needs, but interogates you for medical details. It's very frustrating when you join a medical organization to have the expertise of qualified doctors/nurses and then find your issues being addressed by a "telephone operator" or whatever work title they are given. I don't know exactly when or for what reason, in addition to cost cutting, this impersonal communication system was instituted, but I hope that Sharp has an ongoing evaluation of its overall effectiveness. If they are unwilling to return to the traditional patient/doctor system, then at least give patients the option of being transferred directly to the doctor's receptionist. The patient-doctor relationship is critical to a patients confidence that they are well cared for and for engendering a feeling of well-being. That relationship should not be compromised by an impersonal communication system. I hope Sharp will review and evaluate the impact of its current impersonal communication system and consider returning to a system that supports patient-doctor communication. read more

Made a payment plan then was overcharged, called to correct the over charge was told supervisor would call back emailed them many times about the error and requesting call back about erroneous error on their billing department and never heard back. Now forced to file a dispute with my bank. Unacceptable customer service, poor service, and lack of accountability. I have an email of my payment amount, and to charge me 5x that amount and then just not respond is theft. read more

As I am drained from explaining what happened in my experience with Sharp let this picture do the talking. This is how the experience has changed my perception of our country's medical healthcare system. I applied for medi-cal July 2021 because I thought I could save money for my family. Because of my application my insurance was terminated without my permission during the final month of my wife's pregnancy. We spent hours trying to correct this mistake during the month of August only to get reinstated the 1st of September. My son was born the day before on August 31st. They sent me about $30,000 total in hospital bills ranging from the day he was born until 2 days after even though my insurance was reinstated on the 1st. It was only after I pointed out that fact they corrected the bills and sent me the one for August 31st. You see where I am going? This is unethical and immoral. They terminated my coverage unfairly then fail to recognize a days difference gap in coverage that wasn't even my fault. I posted a review on Google and it was only after then that a representative personally called me and told me I should appeal the decision. That would put me through hours on the phone with covered.ca and I was past the 90 days to appeal. I'm sick of wasting my time trying to correct a problem that shouldn't be mine and they sent one of my bills to collections already. Absolutely disgusting how they let my family slip through the cracks or purposefully ignored what was happening with my coverage insisting I missed it by one day and deserve to pay the full bill or apply for financial assistance. I can tell you one thing they can do, bite my ass and talk to my lawyer if they insist I pay up. DO NOT BUY THIS HEALTH PLAN. Don't confuse the Sharp Health Plan with Sharp Rees Stealy Medical Group, or Sharp Hospital. This is a health insurance company, and as much as I love my doctor at Sharp, this is the only insurance they accept from an individual/ self-employed person. The Sharp Health Plan is the worst health plan anyway you slice it. They constantly turn down coverage for meds. They change the tiers of the same medications from year to year, more the doubling the deductible. Their tech support personnel are the most incompetent and arrogant people in the industry. I haven't been able to get any email messages in to any of my doctors or my pharmacy for over 3 weeks since they disabled the old App in an effort to save money, while their own new apps don't work. As much as I like my doctors, I think I will have to leave the medical group because of the limited insurance choices they accept. read more

A family member has been using Psych Centers of San Diego (now mindpath health) for decades. There has always been issues with getting medications filled in a timely manner, reaching providers, and feeling heard. Recently it has become completely unmanageable. This peeson hasnt been able to talk to a person or receievd a call back in weeks. The hardest part of treatment shouldn't be getting maintenance medications filled. It should be the easiest. The worst healthcare provider I've ever had. First of all their network of doctors in San Diego is incredibly small and if you vet any of the doctors you will see (and ignore the highly suspect "glowing" reviews on the Sharp website of every doctor), you'll see that most of the doctors have really low Google and Yelp reviews. That falls in line with all the doctors I saw at Sharp Rees-Stealy Downtown. Sharp doesn't have payment plans as well, only if you've been in their hospitals (Urgent Care doesn't count), which I find stunning especially during COVID. I moved out of state a few months ago, canceled my policy a month before my next payment via their online cancelation form with a customer service rep helping me on the phone, and it took Sharp three months to cancel my policy and send a letter to confirm. All the while I was receiving bills every month for what I wasn't paying to the point where I was receiving warnings to pay or something would happen. Just unreal. read more

The slowest most bureaucratic insurance and medical provider system I have ever experienced. I pay my own silver level Sharp HMO health plan, $711 a month, plus all their co-pays for every visit which take weeks to get as priced -months to get scheduled -then bounced around for more referrals and weeks and month delays for appointments. They are still working through the same issues on my case for 10 months and still bouncing around for services. While some Dr's in their network seem competent /solid- seems like they are held back by a very cost controlled, low staff level network at Sharp Community Health. Unfortunately, the customer service experience was WAYYY BELOW standard. Despite the simplicity of my inquiry, which involved checking patient's eligibility and benefits, Brandy consistently placed the call on hold for EACH policy-related question. She consistently indicated a 3-5 minute hold time, but her returns exceeded the anticipated threshold. This isn't my first attempt to reach out to them; and a significant number of their representatives display rudeness and incompetence. read more

I finally scheduled the mammogram in 2020, but they could not get me in until 01/19/2021 due to COVID. I moved from CA on 01/26/2021. I called Customer Service yesterday to get help on resolving a billing issue that I thought was covered under my Sharp Healthcare plan. I had called way back in Jan 2024 asking if my Depoprovera birth control injection (been on for over 20 years) was covered under a plan I was thinking of applying for after I lost my job/health insurance due to a layoff. I was assured that it was thus I went for it. Now I'm getting billed for it which is almost $400. My insurance per month costs me $462 alone, so why would I pick a plan that did not include the injection. Anyway after several phone calls to Sharp billing and then customer service....Zulma finally helped me (I hope!!) to get the billing issue resolved. He was on the phone with Sharp Rees Stealy office that I get my injection an for over an hour and called me back once he got everything cleared up. I appreciated the time he spent going through my call history with Sharp and explaining to people that my insurance plan was active and included the injection. read more

Sharp Health Plan has been far from perfect, but I am writing this review to acknowledge the great service I received from Heidi G, today. I had a challenging request with a not-so-great medical equipment supplier. Heidi stayed on the line with me for over an hour trying to figure out what the supplier needed to ensure that I was able to receive an advance on my supplies prior to me leaving on a trip out of the country. This type of service is hard to come by, and she did a great job of remaining calm, caring and professional even after the supplier dropped our call. I appreciate you Heidi! read more

I physically went to SHP (Kearny Mesa) to seek help with my reimbursement claim for medical services received on a cruise ship back in February. Now it's because I don't have a group number and other information that is found on my insurance card so I have to wait until I receive my card to receive treatment and process my referrals?? INSANE. I sent a very detailed email concerning my experience and the issues and got a response that it was "forwarded to our patient experience team". I've heard nothing back from Sharp and instead have been told by the provider who I saw that they won't be able to do anything until I have my insurance card! If it wasn't for Mariann O., I'm not sure what I would do. I had to sort out an error on CMS part which kept on charging me for late enrollment penalty fee. Mariann did all the research, patiently and thoroughly, explained everything and then followed up just as she said she would. She is truly a lifesaver. I would have gone crazy trying to figure this out with this incredibly frustrating situation. She resolved my problem last September (2020) and I was able to receive a refund for the mistaken charges from CMS. Mariann also told me about the OTS benefit which has been a huge benefit that I now know about and use. I would have never known. It is so nice that she told me about it and asked me if I knew. Who really reads all the brochure info?! Don't I wish everyone were so kind?! I'm so grateful for Mariann O. Update: now January 2021 and CMS is still in error and is charging me late enrollment penalty fee again although they did correct their past charges in error. So Mariann is helping me again. I know she's going to help me resolve this once and for all. I trust her. Sharp is so blessed to have someone like Mariann. I wish every company, every service rep, were so kind, friendly, thorough, dependable and trustworthy. I hope Sharp recognizes such superior service and an exceptional employee. If I could give this place a zero I would. I was attempting to get the proper form to have a medication authorized and the woman I was speaking with never let me finish my sentence. She constantly spoke over me and just kept parroting the same line over and over. I would state, "To make sure I am understand this correctly..." gland that's about as far as I could get. I called Sharp Health Plan Customer today for assistance in getting a refund for my dental premium double payment and for assistance in deleting one of the two automatic monthly payment for the premium. Mariann O was very helpful in accomplishing what I wanted done. She even made me know about over the counter (OTC) benefit available to me. She assisted me on how I can avail of the $80 every quarter OTC benefit allowance. Today I made use of the $80 benefit allowance from CVS. I was very pleased with all the assistance I received. Garbage health plan. Every year premium and deductibles/copays go up and the level of care goes down. My vet takes better care of my dog. They kept me in the hospital for two days on a misdiagnosis then charged me over two thousand dollars all for the privilege of staying in their dump of a hospital with no food because they said I needed surgery so could not eat or drink. I didn't need surgery so then they let me go and charged me. Then I complained to the medical board and they didn't do shit to get my money back, they probably got paid off with half my money. Don't waste your time with this $hit organization, go to a butcher instead. read more

After reading the cover letter, in a large envelope from Sharp Health Plan, I called to get additional information about re-enrollment and the new VIP Plan. I was fortunate to have my call handled by Mariann O, as she was knowledgeable, gregarious, and patient. Mariann covered many of the enhanced benefits and assured me that the plan is not too good to be true. She stated that the goodies come at no additional cost to me. Vadim Avulov, DO This letter is to report many concerns about the substandard care provided by Vadim Avulov, DO. On April 11th, 2024, my husband's gallbladder was removed by said doctor. Four days later, he returned to the ER with pain and fatigue. He was admitted and was found to have a significant infection in the abdominal cavity. A drain was put in and after the pus was drained, he was found to have a bile leak. He had one complication after another with an extreme amount of pain and suffering. Not once during his 8-day stay at the hospital with all the complications, did Avulov nor anyone from his office follow up with my husband to check to see how he was. On the 8th day, my husband was released from the hospital with the drain attached due to the continued bile leak. During his follow up appointment with Avulov, there were further concerns. When he entered the examining room, he did not know who my husband was and had to consult notes on his phone to be reminded about his case and complications. He commented about the bile leak. But didn't know about the infection. In fact, I was the one who had to tell him that my husband had suffered from a significant infection! When I kindly asked him why he or no one from his office had not followed up with my husband at the hospital, in addition to the fact he didn't know who my husband was upon entering the room, he became highly defensive and began talking to me in a raised voice and accused me of having a bad attitude. When I tried to add to the conversation, he raised his voice even more and talked over me. He said, "I do many surgeries per day, and I can't be expected to know who all my patients are with all the details of their cases." And continued with, "Instead of being upset with me, you should be thanking me for taking out his gallbladder!" One last concern is the way in which he offered to remove the drain. He offhandedly said, "I can remove this drain right now if you want." There was no discussion of what that would entail. My husband refused, knowing that he had an appointment the next day at the radiology department to have it removed. Come to find out, there was a specific protocol for the removal. First, contrast was introduced into the drain and looked at on the X-Ray machine to make sure there was no blockage or anymore accumulated bile. This was done by the radiologist and when all was clear, the drain was removed, bandages put on the wound, with instructions how to care for it. It was obvious that Avulov had none of this equipment in his exam room to follow the standard protocol. I breathed a sigh of relief that my husband refused his offer to remove the drain! read more

Sharp Health Plan, thank you so much for caring more about your profit and stock price than you do about the well-being of people that pay you to stay in business. In the middle of a respiratory illness pandemic, I have to spend hours on the phone with the pharmacy, two of my doctors and you to find alternatives to prescription medications that I know work for me. But I guess you know best. You get to decide which inhaler works for me. You know more than my doctors and I. Just one problem, the one you're forcing me to use sent me to ER the last time I used it. The one that you no longer cover, works perfectly. It's so comforting to know that I have to change meds that keep me healthy so that you can make more profit. Do you see why we need to end all health insurance companies? They don't deserve to be in business. For the record, none of my phone calls to Sharp Health Plan went through. I was transferred around, hung up on and waited on hold for hours before having to hang up. read more

After seeing a pain specialist for about 10 years, I am suddenly not approved, "due to medical necessity". Unfortunately, I haven't had a miracle, my condition has not changed or improved. I am 100% sure there's a glitch in semantics or paperwork somewhere, yet my hands are tied, so tomorrow I will have to pay cash to see my pain specialist. Paying $150 out of pocket every month to see a pain specialist is not acceptable considering the fact that I have insurance. The only silver lining to what I've been going through the past 5 weeks is one shining star at SHARP named Beatrice K. This customer service representative has unfailingly and consistently provided me with the kindest, most supportive customer service she could. Every time I am lucky enough to have her on the phone, I feel relieved afterwards, even though my issue still isn't resolved. Beatrice is always sweet, patient and genuinely tries to be of assistance. She is the complete opposite of a representative named Sylvia who interrupted me saying, "are you going to let me speak" this morning, and Elaine who kept me on hold for over 30 minutes then disconnected the call once it was after hours and never called me back). I hope Beatrice is recognized for her outstanding, exemplary customer service and perhaps given the opportunity to train others so they can be even a smidge as fabulous as she is! read more

I really appreciated her responsiveness and empathy toward my issue. Also, while I expected to get what I needed within 24 hours, Janette M. in billing got on it pronto, and I had what I needed in under ONE HOUR! Just wanted to give a shout out to both Natasha and Janette for their terrific customer service, and representing Sharp Health Plan so well. Lastly, when I touched base one last time, Yvonne was very helpful in giving me information, so I really appreciated her great help as well. I just enrolled in a Sharp Health Plan. I wanted to share my positive experience with the enrollment process. I spoke with Sharp sales agent Trent Fields. He went above and beyond in my mind to assist me with the process. When I had difficultly navigating the enrollment process via email, he had already provided me with his direct phone line, and he told me to call him for assistance if I had any issues. This was huge for me, because it meant I could continue the process with Trent and not another agent. I called him and he promptly got back to me, and we scheduled a time to complete the enrollment over the phone. This kind of commitment on Trent's part to make the enrollment process stress free, speaks volumes to the customer service I have received from Sharp. Thank you again Trent!! read more
