John is awesome!!!!! I'm a professional chef and take pride in keeping my knives sharp. Recently my wife gave me a beautiful Japanese knife for my birthday. This knife was the envy of my kitchen until I, foolishly, broke it's tip. I was crushed, but determined to fix it. I worked on it for a couple of days and got a tip back on, but i just wasn't completely satisfied with it. Absolutely fantastic! David has been sharpening my knives for several years, and I can't say enough about the quality AND his professionalism. He really knows his craft, and takes care of my knives as carefully and skillfully as if they were his own. I am so glad I found John and his workshop, Sharper Edge! On a whim this morning, I decided to finally get 6 of my kitchen knives and kitchen scissors sharpened. I looked for "knife sharpener" on Google Maps and called 5-6 places which turned out to only offer commercial services. (For some reason, I didn't think to look on Yelp, which would have saved me so much time!) I finally stumbled onto John's address and phone number, and called him up. He said I could drop off the knives then (it was around 12 noon), and he text'd me his workshop address. When I arrived at John's workshop, he patiently answered all of my questions, showed me how to sharpen my knives at home, and explained how to maintain them properly. He was reasonably priced, and had my knives ready for me by 5 pm the same day(!). Both John and his apprentice (his son I think?) were extremely helpful, friendly, and truly artists at this craft! One can't help but admire and appreciate a person who is passionate and loves what they do. That is how I would describe John. The man is a cutlery artisan. I recently bought an out-of-circulation Buck Knife Rush 290 assisted folding knife. When it arrived, the blade was unbelievably dull, very uneven, and looked like it was unskillfully sharpened with a Dremel. John was kind enough to see me at his workshop after work hours to sharpen my blade. It was such a pleasure to chat with him and share in the common interest of knives. He took such careful attention to my blade: fixing the curve, removing blemishes, polishing/deburring the edge, all the while explaining each step so I knew what stage of the process he was in. In the end, my knife was Xacto sharp and looking mighty pretty. I will most definitely be bringing my damaged temper forged carbon steel Katana to him for restoration. I wanted to love this work but was really disappointed based on my expectations from all the five star yelp reviews. I had 10 high quality knives sharpened and an expensive set of Japanese shears. I was truly shocked by how badly the shears came back. The tip of one side of the shears was SO thin and fragile, which is not how shear tips should be. As far as my German knives, they seemed hardly sharpened. Granted, they had been used extensively during lockdown and went in fairly dull but they definitely came back less sharp than when I first purchased them. I asked to have them sharp enough that the knife should fall/slice easily with almost no resistance through vegetables but that's certainly not what I got back. I also found that after about a month the knife looked in worse shape than I'd ever seen my knives. I BABY my knives so there was no reason they should've looked and performed so poorly. I feel guilty and embarrassed that I had ALL my knives sharpened instead of just having one done to test out the sharpening quality. So much for all the great reviews. I'm still confused why I had such a poor experience with mine. Really bummed. read more

Being in charge of all things maintenance related, it was my job to find a local knife sharpening service to come by on a monthly basis and keep our (20 to 30) knives in top shape. I found several rave reviews about John Powers at Sharper Edge in Studio City. My primary concern was good quality work (I didn't want to hand over my boss' knives to just anybody). At the first visit I could immediately tell that John knows his stuff (he's a virtual walking encyclopedia of knives; their anatomy, manufacturing techniques, steel composition etc etc). Every task is performed with such care and finesse. Watching him work it is quite apparent that he knows his tools very well and he is extremely gentle on the knives he works on; he can put a new edge on a blade with such minimal steel loss that it's practically undetectable to the naked eye (except maybe John's eye). Some that I found had either a waiting list or I would of had to leave the knives in their care for a few days. My boss couldn't be without he knives for a few days- he used them everyday. John was able to repair the knives- by repair I mean they were stained and had rust. I took a box of knives to the Farmer's Market to have them sharpened. I had emailed John but hadn't made it to his office with the craziness that have been my last few weeks. His assistant said to John"We got another Huge order" which I took to be a good sign...someone else showed up with 17 knives! (who does that). He asked me if I brought my whole kitchen, which I told him, no about half... the good ones. John and his assistant were great, John offered to drop them off a day later even. When he reached me, I was doing errands so I swung by with the dog(John loves dogs!) and picked them up. They were packed up in sheaths.. which I needed and perfectly sharp. I haven't sharpened knives often but I took 3 paring, one tomato, 2 chef's, 2 santoku, 3 bone and 6 chef's and all in all it was 90 bucks. I consider it a deal since I've had my knives for at least 5 years. Great experience, quality work, extremely accommodating and quick service and John is a really nice guy! Definitively look him up!
