I had a collection of kitchen knives that were woefully dull. I had tried to revive them with a whetstone, but when my wife and I were sawing through a cucumber the other day, I finally gave in and did a search for a professional. After reading through a few places in the Valley and some mail-in options, I came across David and Sharper Edge. Gave him a call on a Thursday afternoon. He informed me that he would be at the Farmer's Market that evening, so I could either drop them off then and pick them up the next day, or bring them in Friday morning and get them back same day. I chose the latter. Drop off was contactless and easy. Just drop them, wrapped in a towel, in a plastic container at his place and fill out a ticket with name and phone number. I dropped them off a little after 10am, and he texted me that he had finished my 12 knives and kitchen shears by around 3pm. Pick up was as easy as drop off. Just grabbed my knives wrapped up nicely in my towel (much nicer than when I did it), and left the payment. And the pricing was great! Less than I expected. As soon as I got home I tried a couple of the knives on that cucumber and the edges were fantastic. From this point on I won't go anywhere else to get my knives sharpened, and I will recommend David to anyone I know. read more

He restored my old Mac knife, in fact, he redesigned it from a paring knife into a santoku - he even showed me a sample santoku before starting the repair. He talked to me about the history of Japanese knives and Chicago Cutlery, the manufacturer of the steak knives I brought to have sharpened, as well as how to care for their handles. He worked rapidly and carefully; I could tell he was a master of his craft. People at the farmers market were bringing him all kinds of blades: garden tools, scissors, kitchen knives, everything. I finally needed my straight razor honed after two years of continuous use. After reading the reviews it appeared that John was great at sharpening knives but would you trust the sharpened knife and place it on your face to shave? I emailed John for additional information and decided to send my straight razor to him. The turnaround time was outstanding! I received my honed straight razor after two working days and within a nice storage sleeve! The work completed was exceptional! The straight razor came back sharper than the day first day I used it. John also took the time to tighten the pivot hinge and removed some slight rust. The best part about this experience was John's customer service. John promptly answered my questions via email and took the time to explain his personal honing process which was a combination of Japanese Shapton and Naniwa water stones.
