I'm leaving this review to share a concerning pattern I've witnessed with Shevetz Heating and Cooling over two visits. On my first visit, I observed behavior from staff, David, that struck me as sexist toward women. On a second visit, my assistant was present to meet with them, and staff were dismissive and rude to her -- they largely refused to engage with her directly. Even more troubling, they reported to our building's front desk that they "thought something weird was going on," which felt like an inappropriate and baseless insinuation with no basis in reality. In my opinion, this reflects a broader pattern of unprofessional and sexist conduct that reflects poorly on how this company treats women, whether customers or staff. I selected them from several quotes to install a completely new HVAC system 3 years ago, not based on price but because of the time they took to analyze our needs, listen to our concerns, and price a system that fit our house, our budget, and our installation space. Today we had a maintenance visit from Karol D. He was thorough, careful, and (as with all service people from Shavitz) took the time to explain everything he did. Not sure what else to call this but predatory. They tried to charge me $6000 for a new furnace for what turned out to be a $500 repair by another company. Shavitz quoted me $2400 for furnace repair that their tech couldn't even guarantee would restore the unit to working condition. They used that to try to nudge me into a new furnace for $6000 (their tech first told me it'd be $8000). Pressured me to agree bc their crew wouldn't be able to start quickly unless I said yes now. Thank god I cancelled & got 2nd opinion. Second HVAC company to come out same day & had the unit running in under an hour for $560 (their quote for brand new furnace was $3800 if I needed) Fully convinced this was bc I'm a woman & there's a storm coming. On top of trying to swindle me, their tech (more like salesman, upselling from the beginning) is trying to charge me $519 for their diagnostic visit where he did nothing but reconnect the board. I fought back & they lowered it to $391 and tried to blame it on me. Beware. read more

We hired Shavitz to clean our ducts and had a pretty bad experience top to bottom. We have a maintenance membership with Shavitz, so the last time we had a technician out for a routine HVAC check, they recommended duct cleaning. We paid the full price for the duct cleaning on the spot, believing that it would be scheduled for one of the preferred dates that we gave to the technician. Nothing was scheduled, and it wasn't until we called Shavitz three weeks later to check in that they got around to scheduling anything. Keep in mind this was after taking the full $900 payment from us for the duct cleaning. Then, once it was finally scheduled, we found out day-of that Shavitz hired a completely different, third-party company to clean our ducts. This company might have been the single most unprofessional service provider I've ever brought into my own home. They broke flush air vents in our house, didn't mention it, and then we realized that they HID them behind furniture hoping we'd never notice. They stripped screw holes from other vents that they removed and didn't fix them. They banged dents into our drywall. They also almost never even did the work because they didn't want to lug their equipment up to our third-floor apartment and acted like they weren't able to do it. All throughout, Shavitz had absolutely no accountability for this poor experience. In fact, they put us in touch with this awful third-party --that we did not hire--to settle what amounted to a minor refund. I would have never scheduled duct cleaning if I had known Shavitz wasn't going to do it. I regret the whole experience and how it went down. To add insult to injury, I've since received a mail flyer from Shavitz advertising their duct work. Sheesh. read more

Working with Shavitz has turned into a nightmare. They initially scheduled a service appointment more than 2 months out due to limited availability. Once the appointment came, they were unable to service the unit and had to reschedule. They canceled that appointment too. Now the unit has failed (no thanks to the three time delayed service appointment that never happened) and they have come out twice to fix it, charging for every visit, with no resolution. If I can't diagnose and fix a problem myself, I don't mess around, I get Shavitz on the phone. This company responds quickly and politely even when they're inundated with calls. Their service is reliable and punctual, and their technicians are among the best, not just highly skilled but also fluent at explaining things. Recently, our water heater (which Shavitz installed 14+ years ago) quit without warning. I called them in the morning and a technician arrived late afternoon. He showed me a problem with the burner assembly and explained in a straightforward manner why it was not practical to repair or replace the aging appliance. I agreed, and he promptly called the office to get a quote and set up replacement. Early the next morning another technician, Jonathan, arrived with a new water heater. He was friendly and communicative. Observing that galvanized pipe had been used in a previous installation, he replaced and rerouted the gas line using "black" (steel) pipe (see photos), including a new shutoff valve. Jonathan was methodical and meticulous, and I was extremely pleased overall with how Shavitz handled this "rush" job. Such quality does not come cheap, though. Their rates are high and (at least in my experience) non-negotiable. On a previous visit, they charged a $185 flat rate for 2 minutes of labor to replace one part (afterwards I found the exact same part online for $20.60) ... ON TOP of their flat rate diagnostic service charge (currently $135). Another time, when a circuit board in an electronic air cleaner failed, I found a replacement and installed it myself for a fraction of what Shavitz quoted. But for the stuff that I won't touch, namely gas heaters and AC, Shavitz is King. I just grin and dig deep into my pocket. read more

In our 14+ years of living in Chicago, Shavitz was by far the worst home service we have ever used. We had a routine HVAC service appointment on Friday morning. The tech found no issues and said our unit was in good shape, as it is from 2018. By Friday evening we realized our heat was no longer working. There is no way this was unrelated to the service, given the unit is new and we've never had issues. The emergency tech discovered our control panel had been shorted out due to a setting change by the tech and we needed a new one. This was not available until Monday morning, so we had to move elsewhere for 3 nights. There is never a convenient time for this to happen, but it was especially challenging as we have a toddler & adult on crutches. During the repair service on Monday, that tech tried to charge us $150 to diagnose a humidifier issue which we never asked to be addressed. We declined to pay that charge, but we found the suggestion absurd. We have received no apology or any contact from Shavitz nor offer to refund our service fee for Friday, during which the tech broke our HVAC panel. We spent several hundred dollars to stay elsewhere. Our realtor recommended Shavitz & we will ensure that he doesn't recommend them to anyone else. We will also be sharing this experience with all of our friends, family, and neighbors. read more

We used Shavitz for our HVAC and furnace system servicing maintenance last year and we asked them to inspect our attic duct work to ensure it was properly insulated. The service providers who came to our home were extremely professional and knowledgeable and saved us money by informing us the attic duct work was insulated and needed no repairs when they could have easily said otherwise since it's not easy for us to access or see. However, we no longer work with Shavitz because working with their schedulers is an absolute nightmare and a waste of time. We smelled a small gas leak in our basement, not alarming enough to call the gas company, but alarming enough that we called the Shavitz "emergency" line. It was impossible to get ahold of someone who could schedule a technician to come out, and ultimately they recommended we call their regular line during business hours so their "emergency" line is entirely useless. Once a technician was able to get scheduled they were again quick and professional and fixed the leak in under an hour. Then we needed to make some repairs to our stove hood vent line. We played email tag with the scheduler for weeks before finally they informed us that Shavitz does not perform that service, which is completely acceptable, but the amount of time it took for them to ascertain this was a huge waste of time. This happened again when we reached out to Shavitz to ask them to service our HVAC and furnace on our rental condo like they did for our home. After over a month of email tag they informed us they're not servicing rental properties currently. Bottom line, if you can get a technician to your home they will do a fantastic job, but we will never work with Shavitz again because it's too hard to get through their administrators. read more

Shavitz installed our new HVAC. They cleaned up a lot of the old piping and made things make sense. The systems are working great and are way more efficient than the old systems. I wanted to get an inspection for my Geothermal unit HVAC unit and had contacted Shavitz due to recommendations from my neighbors. Getting an inspection was not difficult and Neil came out to do the inspection on April 5, 2021. He found out that both the pressure and the glycol level were below the required level. He then explained me that he didn't want to "sell" me anything but that he recommended me to install a glycol fill station for almost $2,000. A bit hesitant due to the amount i asked my neighbors. One of them had the same issue and for my neighbor Shavitz did increase the pressure and glycol to then recheck the levels in a couple of months to determine if the more expensive glycol fill station was really necessary. So i reached out to Shavitz and asked them if we could do the same for my place. No one responded to my multiple emails until i gave a call on April 30, 2021. Brandon got back on May 3 to schedule the installation of the glycol station (which I didn't ask for). After explaining that I was looking for an offer for the alternative option Brandon did not respond until May 17 finally confirming that this was an option though they did not recommend that route (why did they recommend it for my neighbor though?). After chasing Brandon again through emails and phone calls he got back to me on June 11, 2021 telling me that he I would both quotes by June 14, 2021 at latest. I thanked him hoping that finally would experience okay customer service. Now it is June 26 despite a follow up call and a follow up email I haven't hear anything back. In my personal view Shavitz is only interested in selling expensive solutions to their customers with minimal effort from their end. Such a disappointment but maybe not so much a surprise reading the more recent reviews. Not sure what happened to their business but maybe there was a change in ownership/company philosophy leading to this really unprofessional customer service. read more

Finally our A/C is working properly! We have one furnace and two thermostats with a damper zone system and every year it is cold on the main floor and hot on the 2nd floor. He is a true diagnostician--he will continue to diagnose an issue until he gets to the root of it and provides an effective, long-term solution. Our furnace went out the day my daughter was being released from the hospital. In the condo, my 86 years old in-laws also reside. Needless to say, the situation was grave. The technician (Enos) arrived ready to do what Shavitz has always done, fix the problem. During the process of fixing the furnace an accident occurred with some wires shorting out, this caused the breaker to switch off (but, not in the condo unit) BUT in the main electrical closet that we had no access to. Of course, I didn't react calmy to say the least, as now we had not only no heat, but now no power. Enos was trying everything he could (all the while listening to me yell at him), not once did he lose his cool, he showed unimaginable patience and professionalism. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! I had a tech sent to my house to "diagnose" my tankless water heater on 12/08. He ended up breaking an O-ring upon inspection, after breaking the O-ring he calls their parts provider Munch, who does not have these on hand as the model is discontinued. He states he will place the order and would come back the next day to replace the o ring he damaged, along with others that he said would also be needed. He offered re assemble the plumbing he took apart minus the broken O ring. I declined that he put back together the plumbing since it would only cause a leak with out the O ring, and since he said he would come back the following day. What he did next was bill me for the "diagnosis", and left me with no HOT water. Mind you our tankless water heater was working and providing hot water before he came it just had a minor leak I wanted inspected. The next day I do not hear back from the individual so I follow up with your customer service team, they then follow up with the parts team and say they parts are back ordered for the 3-4 weeks, the customer service rep then tells me my unit is old and I am better off buying a new unit if I want a quick resolution to no having hot water. Now, I just wanted the technician to see what the problem was with the leak, not to damage parts that are back ordered..especially when hot water is crucial in our home during the winter. Additionally the Technician, hid 2 brackets that were apart of the part he broke. I called the company on12/10 to have the technician return those parts, I was told they needed a credit card to return. I had to manually ask the Owner to step in, on Monday they send back the technician who happens to "find" the parts in a very obscure place behind the tankless heater.... In short they're amateurs that break things to force you to pay more. They tried to take advantage that my unit was broken (by them) so that they can hold me hostage by having them pay to put in a new unit.... I would never recommend or use them ever again. I know this as we had another company come in and quickly fix the problem they left. Bronson the owner while initially helpful, stopped responding to my emails for a refund since I tried reaching out to his employee via Facebook when they wouldn't return my calThis tells me they're comfortable taking money and not following up, when the business is rotten at the top it's no surprise that every employee interaction was abysmal. Hmmmm...so Shavitz deletes their response to my initial review...hmmmm. I guess that's a reasonable response to getting called out for being full of shit. I guess. We had All-Temp out at the house on Friday and they gave additional diagnoses: apparently when Shavitz turned the humidifier back on and piped water to it they neglected to put a filter into the humidifier, which is critical to it functioning properly. So here we have two seemingly no-brainer instances of professional negligence: a) piping water into the unit without allowing for it to drain properly (or at least not onto the floor and wall!) and b) improperly servicing the humidifier in the first place by not replacing the filter. The other amusing thing in all of this is that service manager Eric Seal called me 2 weeks after I lodged my initial complaint and said "he was waiting to hear back from the owner about making this whole thing right" and commiserating with my experience. Shavitz technician David D made his annual visit to inspect my AC units in my apartments. He serviced all three, thoroughly cleaning and checking the refrigerant and changing the filters if needed. I always feel better informed about my equipment and if I need to watch for any looming issues. David then set up my furnace tuneups for the fall. I've worked with Shavitz and trusted them for 4 years on maintenance and care of the AC, Furnace and Water heater and recommended them throughout the building but after this last visit that all has changed. Their tech showed up for a standard maintenance visit on a 16 year old furnace (that has been working fine without issue). Upon internal inspection with a micro-cam he found some rust around the humidifier pan (as other companies have indicated that is fairly normal and not indicative of system failure). He slapped a warning sticker on the furnace and wrote and explained that he was shutting the unit off at the wall and could not continue nor leave with the unit running and "I could do what I want after he left". I should point out that a year ago the same companies tech saw the same level of rust and had no issue leaving the furnace operational. The tech scheduled an appointment with one of their team to talk full replacement. After the tech left, I switched the unit back on (it was 17 degrees outside and again, the unit was working fine). After an hour or so the house was still getting colder even though the furnace was running. I had a second company (and a third will come tomorrow) to evaluate the furnace. None have felt that it merited immediate replacement and when the second company arrived and we went to the furnace together, they noted the reason it was getting cold was that two wires leading to the heating element had been disconnected. They reattached them and the furnace has worked fine since that time. When I called Shavitz to advise them of this and how it played out, they essentially told me that even though two other companies see no need to replace they still stand by that assessment and they aren't sure why the wires would have been unplugged but they could send another tech and "bill me as if it was just an extension of the last visit". Seems to me that it should have been a simple "we will be right out to have another tech look at everything for you free of charge". That would have gone a long way and may have even secured the replacement bid through them when the time comes. Now, I can't recommend the company because it seems like the tech visit and the follow up from the contract guy were all geared toward one goal.... get a replacement project. Very unfortunate and disappointing but I will be using any other company other than Shavitz and I'll recommend the same for the whole condo building that currently uses them. read more

We've been working with Shavitz since we moved into our home in 2015. We've relied on them to install a new AC system and a mini-split heat pump system. Both jobs were finished early and with a high standard of workmanship. They also perform seasonal maintenance on our furnace + AC systems. We always have a good experience with Shavitz. Their techs are professional, their customer service is responsive, and they stand by their work. We tried another contractor for HVAC once -- not again. They sent a man out to service two steam humidifiers. The guy did not have any idea what was wrong with the first one. Our home is three years new. He came in and bumped our fancy kitchen hood with his ladder. It took him an hour to figure out anything in the first zone out of two. He dropped an instrument and chipped my new tile floor. His ladder bumped and chipped our brand new quartz counter in the laundry room which is beautiful and even has art hanging. I suggest you choose another company. They have yet to pay for damages and they charged me for coming out to our home with a less than technician. read more

Ok, it's been a little less than 10 years since Shavitz installed a new Furnace and A/C unit. We went with the best, a Carrier Infinity system and have been very happy with it. The other day, we had our normal, scheduled annual service. The Tech found excessively high CO readings and recommended repair. As a state licensed Home Inspector, I know this is dangerous and agreed. The Tech though that the problem would be with the secondary heat exchange, since the product is so new and may have some bugs. It was going to cost us a ton, but the Tech out it in as a warranteed part, along with the inducer fan which was loud. That was Friday. On Monday they came out and replaced these items. This entailed pretty much dismantling the whole furnace and putting in all new guts. Shavitz saved me a bunch of money as I only had to pay for labor, which is fair. 10 years, with annual maintenance, and one huge repair reduced to labor only. That is a good and fair company. It also underscores what I tell my clients every day. Annual maintenance for their HVAC system is very important. If I had put off the maintenance this year, I would have had to pay for a new furnace, pretty much. $700 is mush less than $3500. Good job, Shavitz. As always. read more

Made an emergency appointment for Sunday with Bronson over the phone cause my concern was the noise coming out of my furnace. Alex came in at the schedule time and quickly found the issue which was the fan blade and it needed to be ordered. First thing Monday I get a phone call that the part should be in Tuesday and the soonest they can be here is Wednesday between 12-4pm... Craig came in at 1:30p and fixed it and cleaned and inspected the Ac unit. Craig was very thorough with what he fixed and gave me some great information on what to do to maintain it. Will came out ,reviewed our condo and then worked up 3 options for replacement or partial replacement. We also got 2 other bids ,reviewed these and went back to Shavitz based on previous service and cleanings we have done with them before. Will set-up everything on the replacements with us and our Condo Management. He got all the required Insurance forms and set up the dates. Will and his team were great!!!! We can not say enough on the entire team and the installation. You would not know they were here - all was so professional and they picked up everything. First time using Shavitz. Backgound: AC unit only 5 years old and has had problems with leaking refrigerant from the onset (no fault to this company as they didn't install the unit). So every 1-2 years since moving into brand new unit, I've had to have refrid added, which gets expensive quickly. Today, noticed my unit began struggling to cool which was odd given I had it set to 70 and it was a relatively cool day (high 74). So I quickly called around because I am not someone who can live with the house being over 70 degrees. Shavitz (after hours) quoted $289 to come out. I said fine because as long as the problem was fixed (more refrigerant added) totally worth it. Now, for those of you who've had to do this issue you know the unit, if frozen, has to thaw before you can add refrigerant (clearly I forgot and no one thought to mention it/ remind me before assigning someone to come out..not even the technician himself when I explained that it probably needed more refrigerant). So fast forward...he removed the plate and discovers frozen coils, then informs me that he can't add refrigerant until the unit thaws. Oh my word!!! It's not my job to remember that crap, but for $289 I'm not likely to forget in the future. He also discovers that my filter is extremely dirty (not even a month old) and says that could be the problem. Wow, if the filter is the problem, that was a very expensive filter. When I try to explain that $289 to come out and not even be able to address the root cause (ok, maybe it actually was the filter..only time will tell) is ridiculous he mentions enrolling me in the maintenance program. So $220 for call out, 140 for program and 25% off parts and whatever. Sounds great right...yeah only if they're available to come out tomorrow, otherwise I'll have to call another company, so really who cares about the program. When I express my frustration with the tech, he says "yeah, I tried to avoid coming out tonight for that very reason." WHAT?! Why not mention that over the phone and save me $289. I just do not understand some people. Though he was polite and seemed very knowledgeable, I am absolutely fed up with the poor customer service these days (not just this company but many). read more

Update 12may20 As is seen in Mr Schavitz reply he spends more time justifying misconduct and poor service. To be told an appt for an estimate will not be done because schavitz as a company charges premium prices is unprofessional and just bad business. To damage the humidifier and then shut it down without the effort to notify or repair is unprofessional and bad business. That unit was operational throughout the ENTIRE winter and was serviced by schavitz in the fall under the same maintenence plan that i have purchaced for nearly 10 years so any allegation that the unit was already damaged only goes back to poor service in the fall if that's the arguement. And as it sits now if it had been in this state throughout the winter it would have severly damaged my furnace as stated by the last three estimates i have obtained. To justify and defend bad service and poor integrity ...just bad business. And to actually state that humidifier should not be in the summer maintenence call... when the rep damaged, then hid the damage apparently assuming it would be handled at the next fall maintenence call....at a fee and when it should be included in the maintenence call. A creative way to create business and fees...but likely not ethical or honest. Due to all of this "social distancing" i gave the rep the courtesy and trust to handle his business without constant observation....i let him into my basement watched him kneel at my furnace then left and allowed him to work while i worked around the house. That trust will never be given again to anyone in my home...its a shame. I was hoping at least for integrity honesty and communication from the managing staff...not excuses, rationalizations and argument. I guess that is what happens when entitled children inherit a business and didn't really have to work for what they have. I will post update if any Changes in service or ethics. My wife and I bought a condo with a HVAC unit that was completely shot and needed to be replaced. We contacted Shavitz based on a friend's recommendation. From start to finish, everyone I worked with from Shavitz (David, Joe and Cosmin) were extremely personable and helpful. They had lengthy discussions with me about the best way to install the system as well as the best system for our unit and our needs. They ended up installing an additional intake at no extra charge because it would help the system work more efficiently. They also filled out all the paperwork for us regarding a rebate for getting high efficiency appliances. All we had to do was mail it in. Really great company and friendly people. UPDATE: Over a year later our a/c started acting up - the wireless signal from the unit in our condo was not connecting to the unit on the roof. Though it was *just* out of warranty Shavitz came out and replaced the faulty piece at no charge. read more

Finally an extraordinary HVAC company. I have dealt with too many unreliable, unprofessional companies to know a real gem when I see it. Shavitz repaired, and maintained my AC last year. They just installed a new furnace and I couldn't be happier. From sales to installation it was spot on. Krzysztof Kowal our project manager was thoughtful, exacting and never pushy about our options for replacement. He gave us several options and worked with us to arrive at the best, not the most expensive, solution. We are so happy with our choice. And he arrived with the installer technicians to make sure what we wanted was done. The install was flawless and careful. Both technicians, Don and Pioter worked in sync with each other and not only installed the furnace faster than I expected, but they also corrected and cleaned up some messy pipes that the previous furnace had. They didn't need to do it and they did. Polite, clean and always COVID compliant. Instead of going somewhere warm this winter, we are somewhere warm. Our home! Got a call from Jennifer at Shavitz today. They had an opening for the usual service of our hvac. Took it. Kevin L showed up. Usual great service. I'm a creature of habit and am used to Sean who has worked on our hvac system for years. With Shavitz, it seems it really doesn't matter who you get to service your appliances because they are all fabulous. Kevin listened to my concerns and spent time looking to see if he could remedy the issue, and obviously sorted it out for me. He kept me informed the whole time he was here and was polite, courteous, and professional to the hilt. He told me he was fairly new to the Shavitz family and what a great addition to an already lovely service team! I don't trust anyone else! read more

We were having issues with consistent heat so found Shavitz on Yelp. Romero came out and found our problem. Yep, we were in bad shape. Our furnace wasn't safe to use so he turned it off. We had Ryan our the same afternoon to explain our options. We were without heat from Friday-Tuesday so they sent 3 space heaters to get us through. The install was today and the furnace and AC look beautiful. I'm happy to have heat again and Shavitz made it a very pleasant experience (other than the price, but we knew it would be expensive anywhere). read more

These guys were great. We woke up on a zero degree day to discover our house was 54° and our boiler sounded like a beat up antique Volkswagen engine struggling for life. And it was Sunday. And it was New Years Eve. Our not so awesome home warranty company said they couldn't find anybody to come out and gave me the "privilege" to find my own vendor to solve our problem. How nice of them. I called Shavitz and they put me on the calendar right away. Brad showed up two hours early and replaced a whole bunch of broken parts in our super old boiler. We woke up New Years Day to a 68° house and a silent, functioning boiler. I would use them again. And I would recommend them. read more
