When I got back from my trip I called Preferred Comfort and he cleaned and assessed both of my furnaces and water heater and gave a clear explanation of the status and recommend actions. Warning: essay ahead! First of all, if you live on the South Side like me, you know how hard it can be to find trades that are willing to do work here. Secondly, it's especially difficult to find HVAC specialists that will deal with radiators. My husband and I live in an old home (100+ years of age) and have been living with cast iron radiators and window AC units the last few years. We had been contemplating installing central air for a while and decided to reach out to Preferred Comfort Heating and Cooling. Vini is the owner and came to do the full walkthrough with us for an estimate. Vini spent about an hour talking to us, whereas most other HVAC companies only spent about 15 minutes (make sure you shop around for estimates). He made recommendations to plan ductwork throughout the house and for the best AC condenser and furnace for our home's size. We originally thought about having the ducts go from the basement to the unfinished 2nd floor through a rarely used closet in our bedroom. Vini recommended that we do it through the kitchen pantry instead because it could get a bit noisy and possibly disturb our sleep with the ducts in the closet. I'm really glad we went with his suggestion because the ducts definitely needed more room than the closet could provide. Our project took about 2 weeks to complete (10 business days). Demo was completed over 2.5 days with the first day being the hardest - radiator removal. It was pretty loud having to cut out all the cast iron pipes, but it was incredible to see how much floor space we gained. I was a little sad to get rid of the radiators since they're an efficient heating system and it's great for my sinuses during the winter. They spent about 1.5 days mapping out and cutting the holes for the vents to go into the floor. We were very insistent about going this route when we were discussing this with HVAC specialists and not running the ducts along the ceiling in soffits (for aesthetic reasons and also it just feels more efficient for the heat/air). Side note - it's important to pick a company that acknowledges what the customers want because we met a few places that did not want to do this kind of work. The rest of the project was spent fabricating the ducts without compromising too much headroom in the basement. Our main install team was Dominic and Pete. They were super friendly and patient while I asked a million questions about putting a vent here or there or what if we moved this or that. I was very impressed with how precise Pete was in planning the ducts and fitting them perfectly between the floor joists. He's definitely got a lot of experience with this. They always called us ahead of time to let us know they were on the way in the morning and gave us a progress update everyday before they left. They were so professional and gave us a lot of advice as first-time homeowners living in an old house. They clearly take a lot of pride in their work and don't believe in taking shortcuts just to finish a job quickly. While it was a bit stressful to live during a construction project, we were really pleased with the work performed and thankful we could get AC before the temps hit 100!! We went with a 16 seer AC condenser and it is seriously soooo quiet compared to our ancient window units. Looking forward to the winter and testing how our furnace and humidifier work out. FYI - The project was completed on time and within budget. They will come back to finish the ductwork for the 2nd floor after we can hire a general contractor to do the other work. read more

Out air went out in the middle of a week where it was was in the 90s. I called and left a message and was called right back. The guy was super friendly and easy to understand. He was able to get someone out to us that afternoon. The person who came out was also friendly and professional. He explained the problem and was able to fix it right there. We live in a townhome that is technically 4 floors, and our a/c unit is on the roof. He has no problem going up there and was ready with what he needed in order to do so. We had an appointment window of 2PM-4PM. I made special arrangements to be home for that. 4PM comes....no show, and no call. I called to see what was up, and was told we had been bumped for a "priority" job. That's fair enough, but to not call and let me know this is inexcusable. When they finally showed up, an hour and a half later, they took all of 10 minutes to connect our humidifier, and then had the nerve to charge us $192. Really??? Honestly, I should bill them for my time sitting here waiting for them to show, and may just do that. A more reputable company would have said "no charge for this visit because of the inconvenience we caused you". We won't use again, as there are so many HVAC companies out there that know how to treat....and not treat customers. My advice....look elsewhere! read more

I was a bit wary about all the 5 star reviews because no contractor can get 5 stars on every reviewer. But this team of Vinnie, Dominic and (can't recall Vinnie's son's name...sorry :P) was great! Vinnie came over same day to assess what was wrong with our AC unit. He was transparent in showing me what the issue was and presented the options we had. We ended up getting a new AC unit. Not ideal and definitely not the expense I wanted to have but the experience was pleasant and quick. As a homeowner, you always are looking for reliable and honest contractors you can depend on. The compliments for Vini this time came from assisting me when I couldn't figure out what went wrong with the installation of a c-wire for a google nest at my parents house. I called preferred comfort to fix an issue with my tenant's furnace. They came out quickly to repair it and at a very fair price. They called me back and explained all the issues with the furnace. Two weeks later there was an issue with the furnace again. I think it was just ice stuck in the intake so nothing they did wrong. When I called, they were super nice and really went above and beyond by calling my tenants to try to walk them through what the issue could be. Luckily the furnace started working again while they were on the phone. I really feel like that is not a level of service you would get from anyone else.
