Okay so we swing by Sultan's on a road trip home from the Culinary Institute of America. While the students there are clearly working hard, it was refreshing to stop here and eat dishes made with love. These are well prepared, well presented family favorites. Amazing food! I can't resist stopping in (even after we had brunch 2 hours earlier)....the food is that good! We live 2 hrs away, if I'm driving by it's a must! Perfectly fried and sauced zucchini pancakes (think zucchini fritters). Light and crispy with a subtle yogurt sauce....mmmmmm. They were so incredibly kind! sat me down immediately and gave me the most refreshing ginger ale after a long drive. i will say though that I got the doner wrap and I did not particularly like it. It's a lovely authentic Turkish experience in a relaxed comfortable atmosphere! We had the pleasure of being attended through our evening dinner by such a dear young lady named Amy. She really upped the night with her personable & kind nature. Such a good egg! They are lucky to have her. BAD Attitude! Went for lunch today and ordered the "3 Course" lunch special. I eat out a lot and 99% of the time that means an Appetizer, Main Course and Dessert. When it was time for dessert a woman asked us what we wanted and if we wanted coffee. I confirmed is dessert part of the 3 course meal and she replied yes. When I got the bill 2 deserts were added to the bill. I asked the original server, who my guess, is the owner and he said to me no dessert is not included. I asked him what the 3rd course was and he said the little salad on your main course plate. I said I asked her twice and she told me yes and his BAD ATTITUDE response was she does not speak English you should have asked me! Well she understood well enough to ask us if we wanted coffee or dessert AND understood well enough to bring the correct dessert so not sure what she is lacking in English. He did not offer to take a dessert of the bill just bad attitude. Won't be going back needless to say. As for the food nothing amazing but it was good. The service besides the Bad Attitude it was fast and good. So if you are willing to put up with BS for a mediocre meal go for it or reach out to me and I can recommend a lot of restaurants where you get a 3 course meal when you pay for it! read more

Living so close to Sultan's and driving by for over a decade, I always wondered what it was like. We finally went for dinner and the belly dancing show, and our expectations were exceeded! Everything was absolutely incredible here - their menu is huge, the staff was knowledgeable about the food and very friendly, and the food came out quickly despite how packed they were with multiple large parties. I thought the lamb kofte was so tender and perfectly cooked. You can't beat the mixed cold dips platter either! The belly dancing show was so fun to watch, and we had such a great time that we already decided to bring my grandfather here in 2 weeks for his birthday. I've been coming here for a handful of years now and I've visited them dozens of times thanks to Melineh's pics. I've eaten in and had take out. It is authentic Turkish food. The place isn't much to look at from the outside. We've all heard the saying,, don't judge a book by its cover. This is one of those places. Ornately decorated inside. Not to much, but just enough. It is very clean inside. The service has been back and forth with good, great, outstanding & so so. But hey, everyone needs to start somewhere & everybody deserves a chance. Right? Well, they've had some new servers training at times which is to be expected at any restaurant. You take the good with the ok. The same goes with their food. I have had very good & fantastic meals and there have been some misses. Sometimes, like other reviewers have mentioned the meat has been dry because they overcooked it. The majority of times I've eaten here the meat or chicken has been on point and very juicy. I've picked up wraps for take out and that's been most of my least favorite times with their food. They do serve a solid meal with reasonable prices and good portions of food. For the most part the service has been very good. Spacious dining. They have some outside dining for the warmer months. Good size parking lot. Located alongside the highway. Easy on or off regardless of which direction you're heading in. All of the times the food has been fresh. My absolute favorite item here is their fattush salad with their amazing dressing with pomegranate juice. This is a to die for salad. I try to keep track of great Foodie Spots close to major CT highway exits. Sultan's Turkish Restaurant, right off Route 84 in Waterbury, is one such place. I needed to pick up dinner for my wife as I was leaving a Food Event in Naugatuck, and my wife loves the Cold Appetizer Platter from Sultan's. It comes with Hummus, Babaganush (an eggplant based purée), Haydari (a yogurt dip), Soslu Patlikan (eggplant tomato dip), Antep Ezme (a blend of tomatoes and peppers, etc) and Havuc Tarator (a carrot dip). It's served with great, crusty Turkish sesame bread that I believe is called Simit. Although this was primarily for my wife, I had to sample everything again. Such great flavors, colors and textures and the bread is perfect. I also ordered the Number 50 Kebab Combo Platter, which is a mix of chicken Shish, chicken doner, white rice, bulgur rice and pickled red cabbage, etc., which I ate for lunch for the next two days. Even re-reheated the meats and rice tasted great and had good texture. I ordered all of this from about 10 minutes away and it was ready when I arrived. My interactions with the Sultan's crew were friendly. If I lived in the immediate area, I would frequently eat at Sultan's. Explained anything we had questions on, came to Our table multiple times with water, snd started the table off with warm bread and butter! Menu is old and many choices to choose from. There are apps. Salads, kebabs and main dishes. There wasn't a lunch menu and the All You Can Eat Buffet is in the Evenings only . There are many Vegan Snd Gluten-free options available to choose from. I ordered Chicken Shish and Lamb Shish! Chicken was cooked to Perfection. Juicy, flavorful, and tender. Lamb was shaved so it was thinner . It needed sauce. I added the tzatziki sauce on it ( or similar sauce used) and it was perfect. Came with side of salad. It definitely was filling. I definitely would go back and try another dish. My husband and I went to this restaurant for dinner not knowing what to expect. We were very pleasantly surprised the minute we walked in the door. First of all, the place inside looks much larger than we imagined. Initially, we thought it was mostly a take-out place. It has quite a few tables, it's well lit, it was busy but not noisy. There were lots of families with young children. The ambiance was very pleasant and welcoming. The restaurant is very clean. Our server, Sephora, was extremely efficient and cordial. Since we were not familiar with Turkish food, we asked her for suggestions. We ordered the mixed cold appetizer platter, which we loved. It came with a crunchy bread, which was a perfect complement. For entrees, I ordered the chicken shish and my husband ordered the guvech. We both liked what we ordered. Of course, we had to end our meals with dessert. Initially, I ordered the kazandibi but they were out of it. Sephora suggested the sutlac and I was so glad she did because it was delicious. My husband ordered the revani; he liked it but plans to order sutlac next time. The service was relaxed. We never felt rushed. Overall, it was a very enjoyable meal. We had the calamari (chef's special sauce and hot marinara), mixed grill plate, and kunefe. The calamari was good, but didn't think it was a must-do, we were intrigued by the special sauce containing nuts. It was a sauce reminiscent of tartar, but not as rich, and I did enjoy this more. The mixed grill gave a lot of different options, and I liked the lamb the most on this. It also came with chicken kebabs, a patty-like meat, a long, flat sausage-like meat, and cut up doner as well. The kunefe was excellent, and came sizzling on a plate, although the waiter quickly cut it up for us and distributed (not sure why we couldn't cut it ourselves). I've had kunefe before, and thought that this was as good, although I do generally prefer the chewier versions. Just a note, other reviews mentioned a lunch special but we didn't see that. We did get Turkish tea and that wasn't charged to us but not sure if that's usually complimentary or not. read more

The food is delicious, the atmosphere is great(especially with the belly dancer), and the service is always friendly. My go to dinner is the chicken shish. I love mixing the pickled veggies into the rice and bulgur. I have one suggestion, pack a little cup of the yogurt sauce for take out orders. I really like that sauce and I forget to ask for it when I get take out. And they make the best hummus. When visiting Connecticut, we were hungry for lunch and I searched "Turkish Food" and found Sultan's with a very high rating. We were 26 miles away but that didn't seem too far to go for some delicious food and we were amply rewarded for our trip! The restaurant is very nicely decorated. They have outside dining and socially distanced inside dining. Wait staff wore masks and you can access the menu on your phone via a QR code. We were pretty hungry so we ordered way too much food but proceeded to eat it all anyway. We started with antep ezme, grilled calamari and the fattush salad. Oh, and we also had sigara borek with feta cheese & parsley. Everything was delicious. I loved the salad in particular. For a main course, we split a combo plate of doner and kofte. It was really delicious and we cleaned the plate. Of course we had to have some baklava for dessert, which was also so light, flaky and tasty. I could have easily eaten the whole thing myself. Service was excellent and I noticed they did a really good takeout business while we were there. If I lived nearby, I'd order from here a lot! Definitely will return next time we're in Connecticut. We literally live on the far side of the state and yet we make a pilgrimage here on regular basis because it's so darn good. The food offerings are always impeccable. Their drinks are great, but their staff is the true treasure. Our favorite server is Bora, who always remembers us when we come in and always takes amazing care of us. Certain nights I believe Saturdays they have a belly dancer who is amazing to watch and really gets the entire restaurant energized. Don't be concerned about the very full parking lot. My mom and I were recently in CT. Sultan's was recommended for us (vegetarians) and I'm so glad it was! The food and customer service are top-notch. We were immediately greeted upon entering and served delicious tea. Our server was SO nice and recommended us specific vegetarian dishes. I appreciate they label the vegetarian dishes on their menu already. We got a falafel plate and the stuffed veggie kabob. WOW! The veggie kabob is phenomenal. It's unlike anything I've had before. I love the fact all the veggies are tucked into a lavash bread layer and covered with a delicious, herbaceous tomato sauce. This was a total winner and something we would definitely get again. The falafel platter was also delicious. They were crispy and fluffy -- not dense like a lot of other falafels. We still had room for dessert and our server came out with a delicious dessert platter. Not terrible- but bit below average-- same with the rice. No vegetables served with platter.. Just one giant hot pepper -- Do NOT eat that green pepper unless you want your mouth and throat to burn the rest of the evening no matter what you try to do to help it. The cold appetizer or dips -- average. There was one red dip we liked best- very flavorful. But the four or so others lacked truly good flavor. The pita bread was average.
