Salons that claim to be friendly to the Autistic community are often not knowledgeable of the sensory demands of being on the spectrum. And to top it off, the cuts at those salons are expensive considering the 15 minutes they allow for the appointment (and the cut often looks rushed). I was amazed how comfortable my daughter was. Any little self-soothing my daughter did (leg bouncing, scripting) was met with Gospel's compassion. When my daughter would fidget, Gospel's steady hand would adjust. It was truly something to see. Gospel was good about communicating to my daughter what she was doing and what she was going to do (us Autism Parents know how important that is). I went to Shear Joy with my future daughter in law. She was the one getting a haircut and I just tagged along. I did not even know that this place was here. So many booths - so many stylists. BIG MISTAKE. I took my 8 year old daughter to get her hair cut...she wanted to donate 8 inches of hair .....we asked for a total of 9 to be cut off...she cut off between 13-15 inches ( I measured the donation hair at home). She went in with all one length hair and Gospel CHOSE NEVER asked and put layers in and thined her think hair without asking. When I started asking questions..she got rude and abrasive saying this was the best hair cut she would ever have. She can think what she wants...but I have to deal with the tears and disappoint until my daughter's hair grows back. Then she charged me $65 for what was suppose to be a $45 hair cut. I want my money back and would NEVER recommend her to anyone unless you don't want a say in your hairstyle. Now harassed in private messages. She does not listen or care. She dod what she wanted to my daughters hair with out my approval. I pray no one else has to deal with this. Reported her for harrassment on here. I don't care what she says to make herself look better...she did not do what she was paid for ..she did what she wanted and now my young child had to deal with the consequenses. I did not appove her to A- cut 14 inches off not 9 B- add layers to her all one length hair C- thin her think hair. I NEVER asked her advice...I to my child for a simple haircut. I have gone to Gospel several times, and I will start this review by saying she can do color. She did my hair beautiful shades of red and I will not take that away from her. I went recently to get a haircut. My hair was longer, about 3 inches below my shoulders. I asked her to trim the dead ends and that I wanted long layers and face frame. She instead did short layers and cut my side bangs too far over (all the way to my ear! Looks like half a chili bowl haircut). Her website states that women's haircuts start at $45. She charged me $60, that's completely understandable because I did have longer hair. However, when I got home and looked at my bank statement I noticed she did not apply the $15 deposit to the $60. When I texted her and asked about this she said my haircut was $75. I asked her to explain where the extra charges were coming from, that I was comfortable paying $60 for the length of my hair but no more since I did not have damaged hair or hard to work with hair. She refused to disclose the additional 66% price increase from what is stated on her website. This is the second time I've been charged more than I originally anticipated and she is not willing to clarify. read more

Gospel is amazing. here is my experience: 1. She knows her sh*t (excuse my language) but she knows hair. She knows that she's talking about and she's very direct. Which is exactly what I look for in a hairstylist. 2. I made an appointment asking for a deep condition due to what i thought was damaged ends and color! She flat out told me, "your ends need to be trimmed. you booked a deep conditioner, I can do that but your ends will still be the same. they need to be trimmed." I usually hate getting my hair trimmed because stylists always trim too short. Joy did cut off several inches, but when i tell you my curls are more popping than EVER!! Literally my curls feel so good. Especially when i wash my hair and condition it. I swear it's like butter. I have 3c hair which can be a mess to detangle, but now...less than 10 minutes to wash, condition, and de-tangle my hair. 3. My color is beautiful! I wish it came out more orange, but I know Joy and I will find the right color combo next time! 4. We had wonderful conversation the entire time. "Shear Joy" describes the atmosphere that Gospel creates in her studio as that is her personality and I found it very refreshing. Her expertise in cutting and styling is second to none and her knowledge of all things hair was amazing. She told me things I didn't know about hair maintenance which I will indoctrinate into my hair regimen. Also she took so much time with me as she explained her technique and how she approaches giving someone a haircut. Go to her website, and click on "book an appointment." It's easy to see what she has available, and I like it better than going back and forth on the phone ("Can you take me Monday at 2? No? How about Tuesday at 2? Wednesday at 3?") You'll need to pay a $15 deposit via credit card, but that money is credited toward your bill. Finally, I've never waited for Gospel. Gospel is awesome. She truly loves what she does and has a passion for hair. When I came in, I had a lot of breakage and split ends from botched chemical treatments and not trimming my hair for a year. She cleaned me up really nice. She also asked a lot of questions which I appreciate because she got to understand how my hair ended up the way it did and educated me on how to properly take care of my hair. This is an extension of the review I wrote for Men's Cutz in Chapel Hill. I recently moved to Raleigh from Chapel Hill and was bummed at the thought of having to find a new hair person, because I was so happy with the job Gospel was doing for me. Turns out Gospel has her own studio (Shear Joy) in Cary. Very excited to not have to find a new person. A couple of words of note: she currently (May 2015) only does appointments by request in Cary. It is not a hassle though - I emailed her this morning and was sitting in her chair this afternoon. And this was the Sunday of a holiday weekend. Second, GPS has the location of the address wrong for both Apple Maps and Google Maps. Frustrating. The salon is in the Centrum shopping center and is two doors down from Baba Ghannouj (an excellent Lebanese place, btw). You might do better putting that in your GPS. The salon is one of those large salons where individual stylists each have their own self contained studio. So the signage out front doesn't read Shear Joy, it reads JC Studios or something like that. Anyway, highly recommended! read more

WOW, I cannot say enough about this talented woman! I have been to multiple salons across 3 states and had not achieved the look I was going for. I was starting to gray (way too early in my opinion:-)) and Gospel knew just the solution, I was truly sitting in an artist's chair. Now more than 3 weeks later I still could not be happier with my hair. I am amazed at her skill. This is my first time writing a review! I have never really felt compelled to, but with the experience I had earlier..everyone should know! I had no idea what to expect. To say she surpassed my expectations would be an understatement. She has a lot of experience and you can tell! Her skills are polished, and precise. But quick! One of the things that deters me from getting my hair done as often as I should is how long it takes. Can't say enough amazing things about Gospel! It was a miracle that brought me to her last August. I honestly had never had many real hair cuts aside from Great Clips because anytime I went to a real salon, I felt like they overcharged me for something that looked like what I got at Great Clips. I just moved from Florida in June and was looking for a hair stylist here in the Raleigh-Cary area. I just underwent Bariatric surgery in June and I have been experiencing the worst side effect of the surgery which was massive hair loss. I have been so depressed about it for the last 2 months with just thinking about cutting all my hair out. I came in to see Gospel for some help since I could not take the hair loss anymore. She made me feel at ease and made this whole scary transition an awesome experience. She gave me lots of tips that I'm going to follow since I moved from a warmer state to a much colder one. I called Gospel for two last minute appointments after seeing her reviews on Yelp. She worked my kids, ages 7 and 9 in within the hour, took her time, and was a ball of energy and positivity. It was hands down the best hair cutting experience I've had with my kids. The cuts themselves were excellent, she has 20 years experience! Both my kids told me they never want to go to anyone else, and her prices were very reasonable. My daughter also got a teal stripe added underneath her hair for her first day of school!
